The Electrum Archive

Rate this book
The Electrum Archive is a science-fantasy TTRPG zine series inspired by the worlds of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Dark Sun and Ultraviolet Grasslands. It uses simple core rules inspired by other OSR games like Cairn, Mausritter and Whitehack to quickly get you started playing.

The game is set on the world of Orn, a place long ago abandoned by an alien race now known as the Elders. The magical ink left behind in the shipwrecks of these ancient aliens is now used as currency and inhaled by warlocks as fuel for their spell casting. Adventurers called inkseekers venture out into the decaying world beyond the cities ruled over by scheming Merchant Houses to look for Elder artefacts and ink.

Hello! This zine certainly will give you a LOT of bang for your 12 bucks (price at time of writing)! Maybe even a bit too much. (I also think $12 might be a bit low for what is offered, actually.)

The zine's strength is its worldbuilding (which I love) - Boven has a lot of ideas, some small, some big, and they're all quirky, interesting and fun. He hands you leads to run your own sessions, but leaves enough space for you to fill in your own ideas.

There are also quite a lot of rules - a few too many, perhaps (ymmv, of course). It's the sort of thing that 16-year old gamer me would've loved, a sturdy rules system can give a player a sense of control, but the now 44-year old gamer me (why thank you, I do look ten years younger!) feels like the storytelling part of gaming is more important, and I gravitate towards a leaner system. It can feel a bit like the designer trying to create a rule or a random table for every possible occurrence, it's a bit claustrophobic.

The zine is illustrated wonderfully in a Moebius-like style by the author, and makes the world feel alive. I think reading a zine like this should give you that itchy feeling of your own ideas bubbling up, and The Electrum Archive succeeds royally at that.

Great rpg! Especially love all the region random encounters, they hide a lot of world building and are very engaging for players.
