This book is the second in a series by author, Kathleen Y'Barbo about a small town in Texas with a focus on a particular family, rescue dogs and good old fashioned morals and faith. I read and loved the first book. This one may be even better, told from the viewpoint of a woman returning to her roots to care for family. Lovely, sweet story. Highly recommend!

My thanks to the author as noted above and the publisher, Barbour Publishing, for my e copy of this book. #Goodreads Giveaway

And this series continues to be enjoyable!
Ahh, but really, though, this was so much fun! I found so many parts to make the book for me: I giggled and smirked so much at the banter between Trina and Wyatt; the mystery aspect was very interesting and I wasn’t sure how it would all work out; seeing Mari and Parker again!; and yay for all the Texas parts! Am I biased? Completely, but that’s to be expected.
I’m so happy that I enjoyed the second book in the series as well! Now I’m even more excited to read the next two books in this series, because the track record is very good so far. ;)

Cute cozy mystery set in a small Texas town (Brenham). Told from first person point of view of country singer Trina Potter. Trina's career is based in Nashville yet she feels the pull of her home town to be near her mother and niece.

Someone is out to hamper Trina's thoughts of returning home to Brenham permanently. Or is it her niece's dog rescue non-profit that's the focus of misdeeds?

While I'm not a cat person, the cat star of this book was a great addition. The covers on this series are fun and provide a great glimpse of what readers will find in the pages.

My gratitude to publisher Barbour for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Dog Days of Summer by Kathleen Y’Barbo is book 2 in the Gone to the Dogs series and I had so much fun with this continuation in the series! A sweet, Christian cozy mystery! Extra bonus for being centered around a main character who is a Nashville country music star since I live in Middle Tennessee! 😊 4 stars.

This continuation is centered around Trina Potter, a Nashville country music star who buys a ranch near her hometown in Benham, Texas in an effort to help her niece, Mari, open a rescue facility for dogs. However, someone is not too happy about this and multiple mysterious accidents starts happening before they can even get things started!

This series is so cute and funny. I loved seeing characters from book 1 and seeing their journey as they work to make the Second Chance Ranch Dog Rescue facility a reality. Wyatt and Trina’s relationship was the best though. The fact they went to prom together and were reconnecting – loved it so much. A very heartwarming romance. I also loved the aspects of Trina’s career shown front and center and her love for the small town she has come to know and love.

I also loved Trina’s Mom – she was hilarious. Everyone will love Momma Peach! She is feisty and can hold her own. Let’s not forget her wild cat and star of the show - Hector. He over here saving the day more than once! We love to see it. Trina’s love for her mother was beautiful and how she so quickly would uproot her life to make sure she is safe and taken care of was amazing.

The mystery was very intriguing – so much was going on and I liked how they explained everything very well in the end.

I enjoyed the ending and how it was wrapped up nicely and plan to continue with the series. I have grown to love this family and small town and look forward to book 3! While you can technically read this as a standalone, it’s better enjoyed if you read Off the Chain first because we have our original cast of characters throughout the story quite a bit. Just a fun, Christian cozy mystery that leaves you with all the sweet feelings you want in a book.

Thank you to Barbour Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced reader copy to honestly read and review.

This was such a fun mystery and look at that cute cover. I did not read the first book in the series, and I was not lost at all, so it is a good standalone if you missed the first book.
This is a fast read and one that I recommend.

This cover is so cute. And it is so accurate of what the reader will find within the pages.

This cozy mystery was fun and engaging. I enjoyed that the main characters were a bit older than those we met in the first book, though they do make appearances often.

The mystery plot was interesting and though I had my one suspect, I didn't get the full picture until the end.

If you enjoy lighter mysteries, with some 4-paw characters bringing some fun scenes, you need to read this series.

I enjoy cozy mysteries, and this series has been a treat. Trina Potter wants to help her niece get her rescue business up and running, but in the meantime, someone is sabotaging Second Chance Ranch before they even get set up. I like the idea of dog rescue and love the pups in this delightful mystery. There is a thread of romance, but the kennel and the mystery take the limelight. If you enjoy cozies, give Dog Days of Summer a read and make sure to read book 1, Off the Chain. Book 3, Barking Up the Wrong Tree will be available January, 2023. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

It was ok. 3.5⭐️
I liked Trina. But I skimmed the first 60ish pages. Wyatt and Trina were cute, but there was more romance than faith, although it was clean. The party scene at the end was definitely my favorite. Love the dogs!

Trina is a Nashville Country Singer who purchases a Texas ranch in the hopes of helping with a dog rescue facility. And before this even gets going trouble comes. And so the mystery begins! The book is read in first person, Trina.
Her friend from school days, Wyatt, tries to help her solve the mystery that keeps you guessing till the end. If you read book 1, you will love seeing the familiar characters that were in that book as they appear in book 2. And there are newbies in the book, as well. This book blended in well to where book 1 ended. The book has mystery and some romance! What could be better! I really enjoyed this cozy mystery and look forward to book 3!

I adored the first book from the Gone to the Dogs series, Off the Chain, and was excited to read the next installment and Kathleen Y’Barbo’s contribution, Dog Days of Summer. I thought it was a fun and a delightful book to read. I enjoyed getting to know Trina and Wyatt’s story. Of course, all the animals involved makes for a few giggles. I really loved reading every single page. It was great.

Dog Days of Summer will be getting five stars from me. I believe readers who enjoy reading clean cozy mysteries will want to snatch this one up and give a read. I look forward the next installment from the Gone to the Dogs series, Janice Thompson’s Barking up the Wrong Tree.

Read the cover for story details, I don't give book reports. . A fun cozy mystery that will hold your interest and make you feel as though you're right there watching the events. It is part of a series but could easily be read as a standalone. Laugh out loud funny in some scenes. The mystery of the 'who dunnit' (not a murder) will keep you guessing until the end. Read and enjoy! I was provided an advanced reader copy of the book at my request. The opinions expressed are my own. A small town with some mysterious happenings taking place. A famous country singer, her pie-making mama, and a teenager who wants to make a difference. Throw in some adorable dogs in need of a place to live, and you have the ingredients for another fun and intriguing book in the Gone to the Dogs Mysteries series.
.
Author Kathleen Y'Barbo gives readers a delightful cozy mystery with likable characters, a budding romance, and a menagerie of dogs, including Trina's precious pets, Patsy and Cline! Mama Peach is as feisty as ever, Mari is a very special teenager, and an old friend of Trina's comes to the rescue. Will Trina return to Nashville and risk leaving her heart behind in Brenham, Texas?

What a great followup to "Off the Chain". This can be read as a standalone, but I'd still recommend reading book one first because you'll be missing out on a wonderful story if you don't.

I love the town of Brenham and the great cast of characters. Trina was likable and, despite the fact that she's a famous country music star, relatable and down to earth. Wyatt was a total sweetheart. I couldn't help but fall for him. Mama Peach still had to be my favorite character, though. She's something else, lol!

The mystery was an intriguing one. There were a lot of pieces to it and I didn't figure out most of it until the very end. It definitely took some surprising turns.

This feel-good cozy mystery left a big smile on my face. It's sure to delight lovers of dogs and small town mysteries. I can't wait for the next book!

This was a fun second installment in the _Gone to the Dogs_ series. I'll admit I prefer Book 1 in the series so far, but Y'Barbo is a talented author who weaved together an interesting mystery, for sure! It's the second book I've read by her, and won't be the last.

I particularly enjoyed catching up with characters from Book 1, and do think it's worthwhile to read the books in order accordingly.

3.5 stars, rounded up to 4.

I had not read the first in the Gone to the Dogs series, and I felt like I may have missed a little but not too much. I was delighted that the mystery was not in any way gruesome or violent. I enjoyed a chapter or two before bed without any nightmares or even missing any sleep because of any on-the-edge-of-my-seat suspense.

I enjoyed the hilarious cat Hector and the rescue dogs (though not Patsy and Cline too much). I enjoyed the climax scene with the acting law enforcement -- so funny!

However, I didn't appreciate the skipping of weeks with one sentence and no scene break. I also thought a few of the scenes were a bit contrived, and I'm really not sure that the end resolution to the mystery was actually realistic. But I did enjoy reading it, and the ending was mostly satisfying with all the loose threads tied into a happy little bow (except for one minor detail that I still didn't understand the motive behind, but it's insignificant to the story).

On the whole, I enjoyed it.

Favorite quotes:
“I tried to pay attention, but those eyes … Any pet lover knows when a dog has decided you're the one who ought to listen to him. Or, in this case, to her.” (p. 9)

“Mama had produced the blanket at the last minute, and I suspect it was because she didn't approve of me wearing jeans with holes in them, even if I'd bought them that way. 'Faded and holey makes no sense,' she'd said when we were discussing my wardrobe that morning at the breakfast table. 'Don't you want baby Jesus to see you in your best?' I was sorely tempted to argue that baby Jesus had grown up to be the very same adult Jesus who taught His followers to judge folks by their hearts instead of their appearance.” (p. 14)

“'And I can set up a bigger and better cat-io for Hector?' 'There is a nice sunroom on one side of the house that faces the woods. I bet Hector would love it there.' Somehow I managed to continue to discuss the benefits of a cat's sunroom with a straight face.” (p. 117)

“'You were right,' Mama finally said, still not looking at me. 'About what?' I asked, hoping I would hear her admit one of the many things I'd told her was true, correct, or a downright good idea. Goodness knows there were plenty to choose from. 'Those are some lovely industrial-sized ovens. I think I'll bake a pie tomorrow.' 'I was right about the ovens?' I couldn't help saying. 'Not about being worried that you were staying alone in your home so soon after your time in the hospital? Nothing else but the fact that I have nice ovens?' Mama reached over and patted my arm, giving me a genuine smile this time. 'Trina, honey,' she said slowly, 'choose your battles.'” (p. 151)

What a nice trip back to Brenham, Texas this second in the series proved to be. Getting to know Mari in the first book, this time we get to know her Aunt Trina better. Trina Potter is a country music star living far away in Nashville. However, after a visit home she is really wanting to stay in her hometown for good. Can she do that with her contracts? Well, she is going to certainly find out. There is a lot she has been missing out on.

Trina wants to live privately in her hometown, nothing fancy, moving her mom in with her all the while helping Mari set up her animal rescue facility. But there are some ominous things surrounding Mari and her team when they go out at night for a rescue. Can the police get to the bottom of some of the troubling ones? And her Mama needs to be independent, but still have tabs kept on her. Especially after an accident that brings Trina home once again. Then there is Wyatt, her once upon a time prom date. He is not so nerdy anymore and he seems to keep showing up when she needs him.

I really liked the camaraderie all of these characters have with one another. The family dynamics were heartwarming, and I am glad these three women have one another to lean and depend on. As for the romance or more, I was pleasantly surprised.

I was provided a copy of this novel from Barbour Publishing. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

This is one of those feel good novels that is fun to read. There's a mystery with some villain doing dastardly deeds. There is concern for potential harm in what appears to be attacks on a budding dog rescue operation. There are quirky characters. There are cute dogs who just cannot resist sausages on a barbecue. There is rekindling of an old romance. It's all great entertainment. There are also some serious themes explored. One is balancing the possibility of continuing a very successful career with care for an ailing parent and support of extended family members.

The mystery was a bit complex as shown by the lengthy denouement. The final explanation included information we readers did not know ahead of time so, other than obvious clues, there was no way to solve the mystery earlier. I think the mystery was of second importance to character relationships and interactions anyway.

This is a good novel for those liking cozy mysteries with an emphasis on characters. Dog lovers will especially like the cute canines included. It is the second novel in a series but reads well on its own. I have enjoyed both books and will be watching for the next one.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

This dog-themed cozy mystery was a delight to read!
The sequel to “Off the Chain”, this novel is a great follow-up and continues with Marigold’s aunt -the famous country singer Trina Potter- story, when she decides to help her niece start her business “Second Chance Ranch”, a facility to rescue dogs and give them loving homes. Trina returns to her hometown of Brenham, Texas, and purchases a land with a building that Mari and her boyfriend Parker can renovate and transform into her dream dog rescue ranch. But a series of mysteries start to unravel, starting with an explosion at the rescue, followed up by strange things that look like someone wants to sabotage this new organization that has yet to open to public. Or is Trina herself the target? It keeps you guessing. Plus, she has to navigate the waters with her new rival Bitsy who seems jealous of the attention she’s getting from her childhood friend, now a professional lawyer, Wyatt. And getting to convince Mama Peach to move in with her is another challenge. Plus, her agent wants her in Nashville, so a tug of war battles in her heart. Is it time to dig roots and be near her family, even if it gets in the way of her singing career?
I totally enjoyed this light-hearted, warm and cozy mystery with a splash of romance! The characters were so endearing and relatable. Trina is sassy, witty and the most loving aunt. I loved her relationship with Mari and her Mama Peach, who is one of my favorite characters yet. Love her vivacity, her straight-forward manners and wit. I love that the secondary characters felt like family from the first book and I loved revisiting them again. This story can be read as a standalone, but it’s so much better if you read the first book first. I’m impressed how two different authors can write with the same style that you would never tell each book has a different author. They are both so fun and enjoyable. And the romance with Wyatt is clean and so sweet and heartwarming. All in all, a wonderful read that will make you smile, fall in love with the characters, keep you guessing of “whodonit” until the last page, and inspire you at the same time. I vividly recommend it! The perfect cozy read!

About the Book:

Mishaps Abound as Second Chance Ranch Struggles to Get Its Start

Grab a lap dog to cuddle and relax into a fun small-town mystery as a new dog rescue project turns into a three-ring circus of calamities in book 2 of the Gone to the Dogs series.

Trina Potter, Nashville country music star, buys a ranch near her hometown in Brenham, Texas, to help her niece open a rescue facility for dogs. Her presence in town stirs up some old high school rivalries—and romance. Finding property to buy is a challenge, convincing her mother to move there with her is daunting, and navigating a string of strange accidents is perplexing. Sometimes Trina feels like she’s purchased her own three ring circus instead of a beautiful piece of land. But her first priority will be figuring out who wants Second Chance Ranch shut down before they even have the grand opening.

My Review:

Gone to the Dog's Mysteries is a nice change than my typical book reviews. It follows Marigold--known as Mari by those that know her as she runs a dog rescue operation in Texas. Mari was our main character in book 1 but in book 2 of the series we are introduced to her aunt Trina Potter. Trina is back in her hometown and its drawing a lot of attention, sometimes it seems like the wrong type of attention. Especially when her ranch is at risk of being shut down.

Even those this series is as sweet as pie, there are some tried and true grumpy factors to it. Everything is all rainbows as we follow the lives of these very interesting and down to earth characters.

Loved this second addition to the series!

Dog Days of Summer by Kathleen Y'Barbo is book 2 in the Gone to the Dogs cozy mystery series. I enjoyed it without having read Off the Chain, the first book, but will likely go back and read it.

Set in east central Texas, the plot centers around country singer Trina Potter who's pulled between her career based in Nashville and her family in her home town. Trina's niece Marigold is starting a dog rescue organization, and her aging mother Peach believes her homemade pies can solve any problem.

When a pipe bomb is discovered near the dog rescue, Trina fears for her niece's safety and spends more time in Brenham. As she reconnects with a friend from her past, Trina envisions her future in Texas. Can she help identify the cause of the mysterious "accidents" and balance her career and family?

I enjoyed this more than I anticipated since I'm not a fan of dogs or country music. I related to Trina wanting Peach to be safe yet independent, and I loved Peach's talented cat. A couple of plot points seemed rushed, but I'm interested to read more books in the series to spend time with these colorful characters. This will be an interesting series as one author (Janice Thompson) will write books 1 and 3 and Ms. Y'Barbo is writing books 2 and 4.

A heartwarming mystery, set in a small town, with endearing characters, plenty of heart and mischief.

Country Singer, Trina Potter, buys a ranch to help her niece start a haven for dogs. But mysterious mishaps start that are more than accidents, can they get to the bottom of who wants Second Chance Ranch to fail before they open.

I was thrilled to see familiar faces in this book, as Trina goes back to her hometown, taking a break from her busy career to get the rescue off the ground. Trina has been working hard for a long time, and I liked that she was able to take time to nurture her relationships with her family as well as friends while in Brenham. Nash is a great help to her, as they work together to find out who is behind the sabotage, I loved seeing them reconnect as well as their scenes together.

Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable cozy mystery, with great interaction, mystery, faith, and sweet romance. What more could I ask for?

Dog Days of Summer is a book you have to read! It's the second installment in the Gone to the Dog Mysteries series by Kathleen Y'Barbo. The first book in the series is Off the Chain which is equally as good. The second book can be read as a standalone.
Set in the fictional town of Brenham this feel good and cozy mystery with it's cast of characters will delight readers. It is safe to say readers will fall in love with them and the best part for mystery lovers is how the book flows not giving anything away too early. With a a bit of romance, someone who does not want a dog rescue to flourish, and dogs/puppies that are adorable this will be a nice cozy book for the coming cooler days.

The 2nd book in the Gone to the Dog Mysteries is from Trina Potter’s point of view. Trina is a Nashville country singer who is feeling the pull toward her hometown of Brenham, Texas. Her mother is getting older and needs more assistance and her niece is trying to expand her dog rescue operation. Trina buys some property and a house and hopes her mother will live on the property and her niece will use it to expand her operations. But someone is not happy with the dog rescue operation and plants a bomb on the property. Will the threats continue on Trina’s newly purchased land? Between reconnecting with her high-school prom date, dodging old high school frenemies, keeping her mother safe, helping her niece accomplish her dreams, and keeping her music producer off her back, Trina has her hands full trying to come back home again.
Dog Days of Summer is a fun second outing in this light mystery series filled with fun, family, and four-legged friends. Trina is the narrator this time and she is juggling a whole lot of messes. The characters are colorful and entertaining, and Trina is the voice of reason, navigating the different angles of the mystery and rounding up the suspects at the end. There’s romance, family obligations, bar-be-que, and country music. Who says you can never go home again? Unfortunately, Trina must find out who’s trying to sabotage her return to the place and the people she loves.

Kathleen Y’Barbo writes mysteries every bit as enjoyable as her romances – but never fear. Dog Days of Summer, Gone to the Dogs has plenty of romance for those like me partial to that genre. Trina is a country music super star but her roots and the people she loves are in the small Texas town where she grew up. On a trip back to Brenham to visit her niece and mother, Trina encounters her former prom date who has never quite gotten over her as well as her high school nemesis who still doesn’t seem very friendly towards her. That is, unless she’s interested in buying an expensive piece of real estate far enough from Brenham to keep her away from Wyatt. Could Bitsy have designs on Trina’s attorney friend? Or is something more sinister going on?
In the meantime, niece Mari is working hard to accomplish her dream of establishing a dog rescue shelter in Brenham, but Trina becomes concerned when it begins to seem as if someone doesn’t want that shelter opened. Is Mari in danger? What can Trina do to help her and will her agent and producer back in Nashville be agreeable with what she decides to do? Not likely.
At a crossroads in her career, Trina must determine what is really important in her life and what she wants from her future. Fame and fortune? Family? Romance?
Solve this intriguing mystery along with Trina, Wyatt and Mari as they encounter danger, intrigue and lots of cute canines! This is a book you will enjoy to the last page.
