This is such a delightful story and one I immensely enjoyed.
PLOT
The plot is quite a unique spin on the marriage-of-convenience trope, and I quite enjoyed it. Watching faith grow and love and trust develop between numerous characters made this story sweet and these scenes provide numerous "aww" moments...and also a few moments where you may need to reach for a tissue. The plot is well fleshed out, with no holes, and it will captivate you from beginning to end.
SETTINGS
Horizon sounds like a nice little town and the portion of Idaho this takes place in sounds absolutely lovely. (There are some ugly areas; this does not take place in one of those areas.) I could see the mountains and hills through Zeller's descriptions and the farm sounded like a peaceful place to stay.
CHARACTERS
Such a great cast of characters!
Paisley is a sweetheart and I don't know how she stayed sane despite all she endured. Your heart will break for her.
Tyler is just great too and also went through so much. In fact, I can think of five characters who need a lot of hugs. His character arc was superb and his penchant for sticking his foot in his mouth made me laugh so, so hard.
The secondary characters provided quite a bit of humor, sadness, and fodder to contemplate. The kids were typical kids, and their shenanigans made me laugh. Miss Greta's crusty attitude drew a chuckle from me a time or three as well. The reverend was a solid supporting character and the town ladies were good as well.
Ivan...well, Ivan wasn't so great. Meaning he was a nasty, decaying maggot who needed to be stomped on, squished, and then fed to a vulture. Zeller wrote him well. He's a despicable cretin.
FAITH
The primary themes are forgiveness and trusting God. They are beautifully woven throughout the book, and some scenes will, at the least, make you teary-eyed.
Characters pray, read the Bible, attend church, and discuss faith.
ROMANCE
Typical to Zeller's style, the romance is sweet and perfect. Not too much so that it crosses the line, and not too little where we're wondering where it's at. It's just right.
Characters share a few kisses.
VIOLENCE
A woman gets roughed up, slapping is threatened, a certain maggot's underhanded, nefarious ways are hinted at when he doesn't get what he wants, a con woman is briefly mentioned, it is thought a child may have suffered physical harm from a drunk parent, and a natural catastrophe claims lives.
Nothing is gory or crosses the line.
OTHER
The author's note was fascinating. I always enjoy when authors include history, and Zeller definitely did.
CONCLUSION
Over the Horizon is a beautiful story of learning to trust God no matter the circumstances. It illustrates how romantic love can be grown from the most unusual of circumstances, and how familial love can overcome and heal hurting, wounded hearts. With scenes that cause tears, laughter, and that remind the reader of God's goodness and forgiveness, this is a book every reader of Christian historical romance needs to read.

A great start to Penny Zeller's new series!
Tyler and Paisley were both sympathetic characters, and I enjoyed "seeing" them learn to love each other. The touches of humor had me laughing, and I appreciated Tyler's and Paisley's strong faith.
The plot moved along well given the moments of humor, the hints of suspense, and the glimpses of Paisley's and Tyler's life.
As always, I greatly appreciated that Penny Zeller kept both the language and romance clean.
Overall, Over the Horizon was an entertaining read that I'd recommend to anyone who loves Christian fiction and historical romance.

Penny Zeller provides a wonderful twist on the classic marriage of convenience trope! I loved how she paced the book to give a little bit of time for the characters to get to know each other before they got married! I also enjoyed seeing how much Paisley and Tyler loved and cared for the children they inherited. There was a wonderful cast of background characters that provided extra goodness to this sweet story!

Ok! This story starts with Paisley having a rough moment in her life that leads her to meet this stranger named Tyler, while she’s hiding in his wagon for unfortunate reasons. Tyler, on the other hand, just inherited 3 orphans and needs a wife to help with the kids. So, they decide to make a spontaneous decision to have a marriage of convenience and trust in the Lord’s plans for their lives! You have to read this book to find out if Paisley and Tyler marriage will turn into a marriage of true love or just convenience!

“…she was desperate. And sometimes, in those extremely desperate moments, one does foolish things.”
Penny Zeller is an upcoming author I look for in the esp. in the world of historical fiction. Over the Horizon, book one of her series, Horizon, is set in Idaho Territory in 1872. I was quickly drawn into the narrative as Paisley Abbott resists the bullying attempts of Ivan Marchesi to marry her.
While Paisley’s escape isn’t unique in the book or movie world, the events, communication, and thoughts leading to her marriage to Tyler kept me reading. I love marriage of convenience stories, and loved seeing how much Paisley and Tyler had to learn to adjust in order to make the marriage work. “Besides, if he wanted his new marriage to grow and succeed, he’d have to mend the tension between them, just like mending the broken fence.” So realistic, this novel!! So like real life in its conflicts for newlyweds and new parents, esp. for those who are foster or adoptive parents. If you love children, your heart will go out to Albert, Lucy, and little Mae!!
I loved how Paisley kept the faith by reminding herself of God’s faithfulness in the past! We need to do the same in our own lives.
Paisley and Tyler’s problems, including those with Ivan, seem to increase after the marriage. The marriage is not easy, contrary to Tyler’s expectations. “…he knew nothing about being a father. Being a husband was likely much easier.” This made me howl!
Another recurring event that made me LOL was the way that Paisley wouldn’t lie. But she sure found some interesting, unique ways of tiptoeing around the truth!
I highly recommend this book! It is so heartwarming as it tells of five unique characters thrown together to create a family! Shades of late 1800s western Brady Bunch concept.
After reading the advance blurb for the next book, I cannot wait! It will be Mae’s story!

Paisley has recently lost both of her parents and when an unwelcome suitor is pursuing her, she leaves town stowed away in a wagon. Seeing no other option, she accepts an offer to marry for convenience.
Both main characters are kind and they are a good match even if they don't know it at first. What I loved most about this novel was the three young orphans Tyler and Paisley became responsible for.
The author's note at the end provides details about the research that went into the novel. That adds so much to historical fiction. As a fan of ice cream, glad to know it existed back in 1872.

Be transported to the 1800’s to the fictional town of Horizon and get to know Paisley, Tyler, Albert, Lucy, and Mae, charming characters that will steal your heart.
Paisley Abbott finds herself in a predicament, a most despicable man is forcing her to marry. Trying to escape from this desperate situation she finds herself in another situation where she becomes a wife, and mother of three orphan children in a turn of events.
I loved this story! Paisley 🩷Tyler
You truly feel part of the Shepherdson family. You feel their struggles but also celebrate their victories. There were parts of the story that transported me to my own childhood, climbing trees, ice cream family outings. I LOVE ice cream so when there’s ice cream involve it’s a win-win for me, lol.
Though tough topics of dementia and traumatized children are touched in this story the author always points the reader to the one and only God we love and serve. That there’s nothing you face alone in this world, no matter how tough it is, when your faith and trust are anchored in our Lord and Saviour. That’s why I love this author’s writing, always ushering you to find peace through His Word, through His promises. You feel uplifted when you finish the story, that’s why I read her books 😊

Over the Horizon certainly earns a five-star rating! I heartily recommend this novel to all readers who enjoy Christian historical fiction. Penny Zeller utilizes her extraordinary writing talents to compose this story of unexpected love, sweet friendships, and God-honoring families.
Over the Horizon is complete with a little adventure, a bit of suspense, and the perfect amount of laughter, romance, tenderness, wisdom, redemption, grace, mercy, love, and forgiveness.
The author’s passion to impact lives for Christ through fiction and to use the gift of the written word to glorify Jesus is on full display in this lovely book. Using one of hundreds of quote worthy sections, here is one example: “After their deaths, and with nothing and no one else, Paisley had once again turned to Him and was reminded His love is constant. That He never left nor forsook her, as was written in His Word. That His ways were not her ways and that He had a different plan for her life than she would have desired, even if His plan allowed unfathomable grief.”

What a great start for The Horizon series. Take a step back in time to the 1870’s Idaho Territory and meet Paisley who is running from a scoundrel trying to force her into marriage and Tyler who is trying to raise three orphans. When paths cross and a mutual beneficial marriage ensues can they find their way to be a real family. This is such a heartwarming story of two desperate faith filled people that are trying to make the best of situations they couldn’t control. With humor that leaves you smiling as you navigate this story you will fall in love with the children and find yourself rooting for Paisley and Tyler to find their way to true acceptance and love. You will become immersed into their lives and won’t want to leave. Very well written and an entertaining read to curl up with. I look forward to the rest of the series.

I can’t wait for book two!
I oftentimes have a hard time starting a new book if I start the same day I finish the previous book. Not this one! It had me from the beginning. This book not only kept my attention, but kept me wanting more. There was one chapter that was harder to read than most, but that was because it was so full of emotion. I feel like *I* belong in the Shephardson family!

Wow! I am so glad I picked up this book. The worst part about reading this was discovering that I have to wait for book two, which won’t be released until June of next year. It will be a long wait! Here is the storyline:

This is a story that is about as sweet as they come. I was sympathetic to both Tyler and Paisley for the entire book. They were characters that were hard for me not to cheer on. The three orphans were characters I wanted to reach through the pages and give a hug, especially little Mae. Seeing their relationship with Tyler and Paisley develop was a wonderful journey to follow. Ivan was the one character it was hard not to dislike and hope to get what was coming to him quickly.
The writing style was perfect for me. There were some serious moments in the book, yes, but for the most part, the tone of the book was cheerful and easy-going. There was not a lot of arguing and unhappiness. After only reading for a little while, I decided I would like to visit the town of Horizon. It was easy to like the characters who lived there; yes, even Miss Greta.
I found it both interesting and heartbreaking to learn how Alzheimer’s was viewed at this time of history. I was sympathetic to Paisley’s father and the entire family. To think that people were once ostracized from communities because of such a difficult illness was not a pleasant thought.
I enjoyed seeing the spiritual journey both Tyler and Paisley were on for the entirety of the book. The struggles and worries they experienced were difficult, yet they still clung to God and trusted in His goodness to guide them.
If you need a feel good, sometimes humorous, entirely enjoyable book to read, this is one you should place at the top of your list. 4.5/5 stars. Very recommended!

What a wonderful beginning to the Horizon series! Tyler needs a mother for the three children in his care. Paisley needs a home. Is a marriage of convenience the answer for them? Set in the 1870s Idaho Territory, Tyler and Paisley’s story is one of desperation tempered by faith, dedication, and determination. The fast-paced plot flows smoothly and kept me engaged for the entirety of the read. The characters main and secondary are well-crafted and memorable. I especially appreciate the strong, beautifully done faith thread woven throughout the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Wow! Once again, Penny Zeller pens a story that touches the heart of the reader! The characters are wonderful! They are relatable and genuine: I like that they have such realistic personalities. Paisley is my favorite! She's dealt with huge losses and difficult circumstances, but she perseveres and relies on her faith in God. Faith in God is prevalent throughout the book, and it brings hope and light into dark places.

A solid Christian historical fiction novel. Set in Northern Idaho Territory, Tyler and Paisley meet while Paisley is running from an unwanted suitor and while Tyler is making a delivery to earn money to care for his newly orphaned siblings. Tyler realizes that they can help each other so her proposes marriage to Paisley, which completely catches her off guard. With a bit of faith and anxiety, she says yes.
The book definelty highlights all of the miscommunication between the couple and the rigors of starting married life without knowing each other at all. I normally don't enjoy the miscommunication trope, but this one was done well!

Such a great read! Wonderful characters that captured my heart. This was a sweet, clean read that let me escape into another time and place. I love it when a good book fully captures you and the real world gets tuned out. The romance, community, children, and the evil bad man kept this story entertaining. Fun plot and perfectly paced.

You never know how God will speak to you. I picked up this book because I like marriage of convenience tropes, and then was surprised when my life verse Habakkuk 3:17-19 was used. Only God could know how much I needed it.
Loved this book and the characters and can't wait to keep reading more about the people of Horizon.

What a sweet Christian Historical Romance. This was my third book by this author, and my second historical romance story. She drew me right into this story as I needed to know whether Paisley was going to be safe or not. I couldn’t wait to find out how and when Paisley and Tyler would actually meet and how they were going to react to each other. This story is a marriage of convenience story, which isn’t my usual trope, but I really enjoyed it. Not only was Paisley looking for the safety of a home after losing almost everything she had, but Tyler needed someone to help take care of his adopted brother and sisters, Albert, Lucy, and Mae. I loved seeing the relationships evolve throughout the story. Not just within this thrown-together-by-necessity family, but the friendships that Paisley made. The story also adds in suspense through Ivan, such a terrible, awful man. But their faith is there to see them through.
This is a wonderful first book to this series, and I can’t wait to read the next book. Definitely a book I highly recommend.

I fell in love with Horizon Idaho’s tall, majestic mountains and lush green meadows. It reminded me of something I’d read in Little House on The Prairie books.
2. What do potential readers need to know most about the main character?
Paisley’s parents had passed due to a horrific storm. She carried the guilt that she was the only one to survive. However, because of Ivan Marchesi, she was off to begin a new life.
3. Which supporting character caught your interest the most?
Tyler Sheperdson was a God-fearing man of integrity.
4. What journey do(es) the main character(s) take?
Ivan Marchesi arranged for Paisley Abbott to marry him at 1:00. Why did cruel Mr. Marchesi want to marry her? Why had her father given his consent? She would never willingly give the land deed to him if that was what he was after. But, since he had other recourses to get the land, why did he want to marry her?
5. How is the writing style or quality of the writing?
The narrative writing style was wonderful because the author had a great grasp of the characters and the conflicts they faced.

Yes! When Paisley was about to hit unsuspecting Tyler with a flimsy board. The truth is, she was scared, but a flimsy board wouldn’t do much harm.

I REALLY loved this book. *happy sigh*
It was so sweet, and reminded me of Love Comes Softly. Super clean too! I loved the sweet, light romance, and I didn't want to put this book down. Even at an hour past midnight that will remain unnamed...
ROMANCE:
This was the perfect romance. *another sigh* It was so sweet seeing Paisley and Tyler fall for each other, and in my opinion, they liked each other even before they got married. Because Tyler gets jealous, and then that scene in the town, I just loved this romance. It was light, sweet, and Tyler is the perfect guy for Paisley. I wish that she'd seen that sooner, though.
WRITING STYLE:
This was smooth, and read more like a contemporary that takes place in a historical era, (maybe 1860s?). And that's a compliment. A lot of historical books don't hold my attention, and this one did. Ooohh, trust me, it did. I literally couldn't put it down and was tempted to skip a walk, school, and sleeping for it.
CHARACTERS:
All of the characters were great. Tyler and Paisley were both a little impulsive, which was their main negative trait. (I mean, don't you have to be impulsive to marry a complete stranger?!) So they seemed a little flat at first, but I grew to really like them. Tyler was so sweet... But I was a little annoyed at Paisley for not realizing that he was the right guy for her at first.
PLOT:
A very compelling plot, with twists and turns and drama and a tiny bit of romance, even. It seemed a little bit cliche after reading love come softly, but that didn't ruin the story for me. Nope. It didn't even make me take off a single star.
This was a really good book, in my opinion. So what if it's a little cliche? I still loved it. Its super clean, bit I'll list the content down below.

Some kisses, one semi detailed, (one sentence description), the rest no details. A mention of "not so honorable occupations that some women have to do" no more said about it.

Two people each running from something find their way to each other in this emotional story. Paisley finds herself in a situation which calls for desperate measures as she stows away on Tyler’s wagon. I was so glad she was able to avoid someone who was wanting to use her to get her land. Now when she is discovered she must decide whether to trust this stranger. I can’t imagine the rest she must have felt being alone with no family or place to go. I liked when Tyler asked her why she was running. Her response was, “I am running because I have nowhere to go.” I have felt that way at times but know that God is still right there beside me. We can’t hide from Him and He will never leave us.
Tyler is feeling lost as well which makes him feel alone at times. He wants a place to settle down , marry and raise children. A plan forms in Tyler’s mind that may solve both of their problems. Now he has to convince Paisley that it is a good solution. A marriage of convenience can be good for both of them but I can see Paisley’s mind spinning around. Is this what God wants her to do? Marry a stranger and take care of his siblings is a big responsibility so she needs to really seek God’s direction. Tyler is hopeful that this arrangement will help them both.

Life for a lone young woman in the 1870s did not offer much; and when a mean, cruel man expects her to marry him, she has very little recourse. In Paisley's case, she hid and fled the scene in the back of a wagon of another man - unknown to her as to his character and destination.
Speak of horrendous circumstances! Well, such a situation probably has been played out through the ages as young women have fled the clutches of men known for their cruelty. In Paisley's situation, the story takes on a fairy tale quality with the wagon driver, Tyler, as her prince charming.
No, the author isn't weaving a retake on a fairy tale. She is giving us a glimpse into desperation, marriages of convenience, and the good qualities of a man.
As Paisley's and Tyler's story progresses the reality of orphaned children and the Orphan Trains of the 1800s (out of New York) is woven into their story. A lovely story. Sweetness. Fear. Evil. Goodness. Trust. Faith in God. New beginnings. Such a wealth of kindness and overcoming difficulties woven into a story that is a joy to read.

Speak of horrendous circumstances! Well, such a situation probably has been played out through the ages as young women have fled the clutches of men known for their cruelty. In Paisley's situation, the story takes on a fairy tale quality with the wagon driver, Tyler, as her prince charming.
No, the author isn't weaving a retake on a fairy tale. She is giving us a glimpse into desperation, marriages of convenience, and the good qualities of a man.
As Paisley's and Tyler's story progresses the reality of orphaned children and the Orphan Trains of the 1800s (out of New York) is woven into their story. Christian Historical Romance is one of my favorite Genres. Over the Horizon by Penny Zeller is Book 1 in the Horizon Sunrise series.
We are taken back to the 1870s in Idaho. Paisley Abbott is mourning the loss of her parents and she is also trying to get away from a man who has taken interest in her. She decides to hide in a Wagon. Tyler Shepherdson has returned to his Family Farm and he discovers he has inherited 3 Orphan Children. He then finds Paisley hiding in the back of his Wagon and he immediately comes up with an idea. He makes a "Marriage Proposal" to Paisley. She agrees to marry him. Will Tyler and Paisley find LOVE as they begin their journey into Marriage? Will the 3 Orphaned Children find that Tyler and Paisley are forming a LOVING home for them?
WOW, I really LOVE storylines of Marriages of Convenience and this was definitely a different type of Marriage of Convenience storyline. Tyler and Paisley are the main characters of this book and I truly enjoyed their story. I LOVE that they both had different but good reasons for entering into a marriage together. Paisley needed to be free from what could have been an arranged marriage. Tyler was looking for a Mom for the 3 Orphaned children. Paisley has a strong Faith and it really showed throughout the book. This book is one about Faith, Family, and Second Chances. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who loves Christian Fiction and Romance. I am very much looking forward to new books in this series. FANTASTIC BOOK!

Paisley Abbott and Tyler Shepherdson are thrown together in a most unconventional way. Paisley, after losing her parents in a tragic accident, runs away from an evil, ambitious man who not only wants her land, but her as well for his wife. Paisley knows not only will she not be happy with him, but probably not safe either. So, she runs from him and hides away in a stranger's wagon.
That stranger is Tyler whose life has also taken a drastic turn as well. He also has lost his parents due to sickness and now he is responsible for his three younger adopted siblings. They need a lot of love, care, and patience. Not only that, but Tyler is carrying a load of guilt on his shoulders, so he wants to keep his promises to his late mother.
So, Tyler and Paisley have an interesting first meeting that only cements their continual relationship. And when Tyler sees a marriage of convenience as the only way out of their troubles, Paisley agrees.
We get a front row seat of both Tyler and Paisley's thoughts and feelings concerning their very short courtship, a marriage to a stranger, a family of many broken hearts, and the difficulties of farm life. In fact, life in general can be hard without the past and its dangers coming flooding back. This marriage and little family will need to learn to stand together to survive and to love.

Over the Horizon by author Penny Zeller is Book One in her Horizon Series. This Christian historical romance is a promising start to her new series. I was immediately invested in the characters and story.
Set in 1872 Idaho Territory, this is the story of Paisley Abbott. Her parents have both died. A menacing man, Ivan Marchesi, has claimed that Paisley as well as her land were promised to him by her father. Marchesi is mean and nothing short of a bully as evidenced by the bruises on Paisley.
This is also the story of Tyler Shepherdson. His parents have also passed away, leaving Tyler to raise his three siblings. He and Paisley meet through unusual circumstances and decide on a mutually beneficial marriage of convenience.
The characters are all believable and cleverly sculpted. At times I found myself shaking my head at their actions. Miss Greta is a particularly crotchety older lady that needs her own book! She is irritating yet lovable at the same time.
Some of the story is expected and nothing new, but the author penned it in a delightful way. There are lovely messages of faith and life lessons. The story is sweet and endearing. My interest was held throughout the entire book. I read it in one sitting.
I recommend this book and look forward to Book Two. It gets a 4 star rating from me. A copy was provided by the author, but these are my honest words.

Horizon is a town that will definitely make you want to return for a visit! Full of fun characters (my favorite was the boardinghouse owner–she was priceless) and a close-knit feel, it makes for a great setting.
The opening chapter was definitely a hook. Questions always follow when a woman is running down a street searching for a place to hide. There was no putting the book down at that point.
Tyler and Paisley were both loveable characters. And the kids! I loved how many flaws Penny gave them. Those kids each reminded me of real-life kids I’ve dealt with before, and I could just feel the frustration they caused–and the love that they inspired as well.
Most of all, I appreciated the depth of faith that Penny wove into her story, and the clean quality of her romance as well.
