There is no one definitive book about the Tarot. Throughout the centuries, each one has been written with a different slant, a particular viewpoint and even different motives. What we've got to remember is that we are approaching the Holy here. Some modern writers on the subject that are financially dependent on the sales of books tend to forget that in their haste to be "popular" with the general reading public. They're easily detected by paying visits to their websites. If the visitor sees all sorts of gewgaws and whatnots for purchase, beware. The Tarot was never meant to be a carnival attraction; nor were manufactured curio offspring (like kewpie dolls rewarded to the winners at carnival plastic duck shooting galleries) imagined to promote a writer's career.
And that's when we turn to Sallie Nichols, for she studied at the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich when Jung was still alive, and she was as devoted as possible, considering much of the origins of the Tarot are lost in historical mist, to keeping it pure and presenting it inviolate. What is the Tarot? That's easy. Ms. Nichols here quotes Jung himself on the topic: "The Tarot presents a pictorial representation of the archetypes." However, there is no evidence that Jung ever used the Tarot as a resource in analyzing his patients, as he made use of astrology for that purpose.
The author points out that the Tarot cards were never meant to be interpreted "upside-down," and many Tarot consultants do not practice this method. Besides the Major Arcana and the Suit Cards, not much was to be concluded from the rest of the deck's numbered pip cards, as the early Tarot decks did not fancily illustrate them (that came later when esoteric sects sought to use the Tarot cards to express their tenets). And, above all, there was no text. No cast in concrete definitions were attached to them, no cardinal rules set down. The Tarot cards cry out and yet they are silent. The only message they clearly offer is, each in its own way, "Take me in!" And they do not mean that in an academic, pedantic way. Leave your rational handbag at the doorstep when you approach these cards, lest they fly away, or get purposely lost in a dark corner of a faraway cupboard.
Another problem with books on Tarot is they are not very interesting. Sallie Nichols, for instance, whose book is more readable than any other I've studied, admits that writing does not come naturally or easily for her. She is an extrovert most at home in giving lectures and teaching, which is exactly what she did. Some of the most prestigious Jungian analysts in the world, and particularly those based in Southern California where Ms. Nichols resided, attended her lectures and learned of the Tarot directly from her. Some, such as James Kirsch, author of Shakespeare's Royal Self, and an extremely knowledgeable woman, Lore Zeller (wife of famed Jungian analyst Max Zeller, and head librarian of the C.G. Jung Bookstore at the Los Angeles Jung Institute until her death) are even acknowledged as having acted on an advisory level. These cards were a passion to the author which she accidently encountered during a "dry" period in her life. She would converse with them (using the Jungian technique of creative imagination), listen to their silent attentiveness and turn to them for guidance during stressful times in her life for an understanding of them, and of herself.
The author examines and reviews the 21 cards of the Major Arcana in depth, beginning with the card that is unnumbered, therefore assigned a zero to it, that of "The Fool." And which of us escapes starting off as "The Fool" in life? The final card depicts the illumination possible at the end of the journey of individuation, a state of being and awareness very few succeed in achieving. And then we once again confront The Fool, who is saying to us all: "Well, now that we have reached enlightenment, let's start all over again." The planet keeps on revolving around itself and the sun. And so do we.
If the reader is not familiar with the works of C.G. Jung, not to worry. Ms. Nichols does an exemplary job of explaining Jungian analytical psychology to the layman. She also explains spiritual numerology (numbers one through nine) that I found particularly informative. And then there are the archetypal images themselves. What a parade! From the beginning Fool with his knapsack and dog, through the various phenomenon we encounter and become in life: the Magician, the Hermit, the Heavenly Alchemist, even the Devil…they're all here. And each and every one of us is somewhere and everywhere in those cards.
As for the origin of the Tarot, there are many theories. But the only valid, provable one is that they owe their origin to the Albigenses, a Gnostic sect which flourished in Provence in the 12th century. As Ms. Nichols states, in my opinion with just conviction, "It is felt they were probably smuggled into the Tarot as a veiled communications of ideas at variance with the established Church." Remember, the Albigenses Cathars were horribly persecuted and ultimately exterminated. "Catharism disappeared from the northern Italian cities after the 1260s, under pressure from the Inquisition." The second possible theory is that the Major Arcana cards are adaptations of illustrations from Petrarch's Sonnets to Laura (this is the theory of writer Paul Huson).
I first read this edition shortly after it was published in 1980. I was living in Pasadena, California at the time and knew that Sallie Nichols resided in Santa Monica, not far away. I also learned that she was available to give private readings; however, when I telephoned her home to make an appointment, the phone was answered by a man I judged to be in his mid-'20s to late '30s. I told him I wished to speak to Ms. Nichols and why. He told me that she had recently died. Of course, I was very flustered that through my unawareness of her death, I had added salt to the wound of grieving. I apologized for my call, and the man concluded by comforting me more than I him, assuring me that my telephone call was "all right." Yes, he did make me feel better. But I was very sad that we had lost such a sincere and knowledgeable Tarot pioneer.

ABANDONED a little more than halfway through, after the chapter on Arcanum XIII, when I realized all my recent highlights just said "wtf". I couldn't see it improving.
I wanted very much to like this book. Since a lot of popular tarot books focus on the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, it's nice to read about the Tarot de Marseille, my preferred style. To Nichols' credit, there weren't many existing resources for her to use. This is more than 20 years before the real Marseille heavy-hitters The Way of Tarot: The Spiritual Teacher in the Cards and Tarot - The Open Reading. Knowing there wasn't much in the way of tarot history available to Nichols, I could follow Mary K. Greer's suggestion in the prologue to excuse the ridiculous origin story she wrote for the cards. But as the book went on, there was a growing pile of things for which I could find no excuse. These fall into two categories. First, there are objective flaws in her writing itself; second and more tricky, I couldn't stomach many of her attitudes and worldviews.
The first chapter, on The Fool, was promising. Nichols included many depictions and references to explain the archetype: in tarot, literature, art, and the world at large. After this chapter, things went steadily downhill. There are paltry endnotes, and none on the things you'd most want references for. For example, in the chapter on the Emperor, Nichols claims "The ancient Egyptians spoke only when filled with the spirit." She simply drops that bizarre sentence. No further explanation, no references, nothing. I was reading this book as part of an online book club and nobody knew to what she was referring.
Every single mention of "numerology" was so moronic that it doesn't even warrant my arguments (this aspect was apparent even in the Fool chapter and stayed pretty consistently terrible). Her organization was also wanting. She insisted on laying out the cards in rows of 7, but did little to differentiate those rows. Furthermore, she repeats ideas from chapter to chapter in a haphazard way: making the Fool and the Magician seem awfully similar, calling the Papesse and the Empress "sisters" and conflating their attributes, and casting the Papesse as "High Priestess" and partner of the Magician, rather than the obvious pairing with the Pope.
Speaking of the "High Priestess," Nichols also flip-flops between the actual Marseille deck titles and the titles given to the cards after RWS (and between the original Roman numerals and Arabic numerals). In the chapter on La Papesse she talks a lot about the "two columns" which is a prominent feature in RWS but not at all in Marseille. Moreover, in the chapter on the Wheel of Fortune she says the monkey is associated with Typhon, which purely comes from the RWS placement of a snake in this position. In fact, the animal in the Marseille deck which most resembles the serpentine Typhon is the animal on top of the Wheel. All this would be perfectly fine if she didn't set the book up as vehemently against RWS and all about the so-called pure representations of the Marseille deck. As it is, it comes off as hypocritical.
But wait! She has an excuse for her poor organization and inability to present evidence!
When I read this, I rolled my eyes so violently that I probably sustained permanent damage to my optic nerves. If someone is so uninterested in facts, why write a book that purports to share them?!
Now to my gripes with Nichols' opinions. The book is extremely male-centric. The hero is of course, by default, male; women are mainly villains and in general obstacles that try the heroic male. Nichols may have been "before her time" as regards tarot writing, but certainly not with feminism. This was published in 1980, feminists were active, and what's more Nichols was aware of them and had only contempt for them, as is obvious from her completely sincere uses of the word "man-eater."
But the worst chapter of all (from what I read), was on Arcanum X, the Wheel of Fortune. In any Marseille style deck, the card shows three creatures on the Wheel - one ascending, one on top for now with a crown, and one descending. The Wheel has a handle prominent in the foreground. It's up to the viewer whether the wheel is moving or stuck, but it is clear that the Wheel is controlled by whoever cranks that handle. Nichols, however, doesn't see this. She states that the Wheel has only two creatures on it, and the third is not only a ruling creature removed from the action of the Wheel, but an undoubtedly objectively female (and therefore Evil) sphinx who controls the other creatures with malevolent intent and basically represents every single reason why Women Are Bad:
This is the most concentrated example of the misinformation, lack of attention to detail, and misogyny that is a hallmark of the book as a whole, and sums up why I have no desire to finish reading it.
My arguments with Nichols aren't limited to feminism though. It really rubbed me the wrong way that Nichols, on multiple occasions, bemoaned modern man's loss of spirituality and religion, and then in the Hermit chapter shamed young people who chose to follow religious callings, saying that they weren't living their lives to the fullest.
With adults like Nichols, it's no wonder that young people find it difficult to keep up the religious traditions she claims are so important to humankind.
In general, she provides a very limited view of the Major Arcana. While the chapters on the Fool and the Magician are fairly objective discussions of the archetypes, the chapters on other cards are highly subjective, to the point where Nichols' projections prevent a really honest examination. For example, she tells us that the prince of Arcanum VII is puffed up with false pride, and the Hermit of Arcanum VIIII is a kindly benevolent savior, neither of which is set in the cards' ambiguous depictions. (For what it's worth, my favorite discussion of the Hermit is from Jodorowsky, who points out that the thing he is carrying need not be a lamp, but could be a bottle. Certainly the "flames" upon which Nichols waxes poetic appear nowhere in the actual picture.)
Ultimately, the book is mistitled. What I read wasn't any sort of systematic examination of the trumps, it was more like Sallie Nichols' personal and highly subjective tarot diary. While I think it's good to step outside your comfort zone and listen to opinions that clash with yours, there comes a point where it's just unproductive to live in the worldview of a person who is so opposed to your own, and I reached that point with this book.

Since my thinking is not yet well developed, it took me several years to organize my intuitions and feelings and find the words to express them. I didn't want to think about the Tarot cards or read factual books on this subject. I was not interested in learning the history of the Tarot. Being an intuitive with little interest in reality, facts and dates bore me.

این کتاب رو باید که زندگی کرد.
کتاب واقعا من و دوستم رو که همزمان در حال خوندنش بودیم به سفری با کهن الگوهای درون هر کارت برد و خوشحالمون کرد، غمگینمون کرد، رابطهی ما دو تا دوست رو برای مدتی دچار لغزش و وقفه کرد و بهمون رابطهی تازهای رو بخشید و البتهی خودی تازه.
برای فهم کتاب خوبه که با روانشناسی تحلیلی یونگ یه آشنایی کوچیکی داشته باشید.
اگه علاقهمند به اسطوره و سفر قهرمانی زندگی، کهن الگوها و یونگ هستید این کتاب میتونه گزینهی جذابی براتون با��ه.
اگه برای شما هم همیشه کارتهای تاروت راز آلود بودن و دوست داشتید سر از کارشون در بیارید از این که دید تازهای به تاروت میده خوشتون میاد.
قرار نیست در این کتاب فالگیری با تاروت رو یاد بگیرید ��ما بحثهایی هم دربارهی فال تاروت توش داره که به نظرم جالب و مفید بود.
نقطه ضعف کتاب گاهی بیش از حد توضیح دادن یک موضوع بی مزه و گاهی سریع گذشتن از یک موضوع خیلی مهم بود.

I refer to this book a lot. Because it has the word "tarot" in the title, it sounds like a guide to reading tarot cards, and I assume someone could use it that way. More than that, it uses the tool of the major arcana of the tarot deck to write long reflections on each of the archetypal images they represent. The entries draw on the writings of Jung, images of the archetype in art and literature. I find archetypes to be valuable concepts in writing and my copy of this book is well-used.

Antes que nada, me molesta el título, porque no es para nada adecuado. Yo me pensaba que lo que me iba a encontrar en el libro era un análisis más basado en el trabajo sobre arquetipos que hizo Jung, relacionándolo con los arquetipos de los arcanos mayores. Y sí, es cierto que, de vez en cuando, cuando parece que la autora se acuerda del título del libro, cita alguna cosa que dijo Jung para justificar sus rollos. Pero nada más.
De lo que trata en realidad el libro es de lo que la autora cree que significa cada arquetipo, con algunas referencias a escritores o libros, pero poco más. Que no estaría mal de por sí si se hubiese expuesto eso desde el principio y no se hubiera escudado en Jung para vender sus impresiones subjetivas. No decirlo desde el principio me parece engañar al lector.
Además, se hace un tratamiento muy desigual a cada uno de los arcanos. Hay algunos en los que se explaya muchííísimo, mientras que en otros parece que no tiene mucha idea sobre qué decir y son sustantivamente más cortos. Que lo cierto es que podrían ser todos más cortos si no se repitiese tanto. Una y otra vez nos encontramos con que está repitiendo la misma idea que ha expuesto unos párrafos antes, pero con otras palabras.
Dicho esto, al haber leído este libro como complemento a mi estudio de las cartas, ha podido ir sacando ideas que complementaban otras fuentes.
Aunque es tan poco el benefio en relación al esfuerzo que me ha supuesto leer los capítulos (que a veces se hacen farragosos de leer), que no me ha merecido la pena.
Sinceramente, no recomendaría este libro a nadie.

This piece should be read by everyone. Not only enthusiasts of tarot or Jung, but anyone with a will to go deep inside one's path in life.
Sallie presents an archetypical journey through the symbolic images of the Marseilles tarot deck and utilizes not only of junguian psychology, but also of art and mythology to illustrate. Her insights on the cards are great and sometimes very personal, which is also great! The good thing about her lecture is that she departs from the Marseilles cards but also roam around other types of deck, like Rider-Waite's and old-school italian decks. Also, through the book she relates a lot of the passages with junguian basic concepts like persona/shadow, animus/anima, the 4 types of personality, active imagination / sandplay etc, in an easy way to understand. It's a must read!
You won't find a complete tarot system here, tough, as there's no descriptions of the minor arcana nor the varieties of ways to read different combinations of cards nor even diverse ways of opening them.
For that reason, for a broader research on the Marseilles tarot, I would suggest "The Way of Tarot", by Alejandro Jodorowsky. There you will find a even deeper look on these cards as a whole symbolic and numeric system and also the description of diverse openings, including the "Tarot of The Hero", based on Campbell, which everyone loves. Also I would suggest to look for the "remastered" Marseilles deck that Jodorowsky produced, which is really beaultiful and full of tiny symbols that were lost over the centuries of reproductions of these same cards.
Overall, Sallie's book is amazing and gives a passionate and complete view of the tarot cards, without beign hermetic and inacessible. The association with Jung's theories is the real cream here!

"Юнґ і Таро: Архетипна Подорож"

Читаючи Юнґа я завжди дивувався з того, що він ніколи не згадує Таро. Здавалося б - ідеальна колекція архетипів для аналізу та медитацій, але ні, від Юнґа маємо тільки одненьку скупу згадку в роботі "Архетипи і колективне несвідоме":
"Якщо хтось хоче скласти уявлення про символічний процес, то гарними прикладами стануть серії зображень, що зустрічаються в алхімії, незважаючи на їхнє зачасту незрозуміле походження та значення. Чудовим східним прикладом є тантрична система чакр, або містична нервова система китайської йоги. Також видається, що набір зображень у картах Таро походить від архетипів трансформації, що було підтверджено для мене в дуже повчальній лекції професора Бернуллі."
І все, більше Таро ви не знайдете і це незважаючи на цілковите захоплення Юнґом іншим оракулом - "І Цзин" і його дослідженням та експериментами з астрологією та алхімією.
Можливо, Юнґ просто не встиг достойно оцінити таро, можливо просто не дожив до цього моменту, може, проігнорував карти через їх утилітарну складову. Нема знаття.
Сам Юнґ говорить:
"Чому психологія – наймолодша з-поміж емпіричних наук? Чому ми ще раніше не відкрили несвідоме і не підняли на поверхню його скарб вічних образів? Це пояснюється дуже просто: бо ми ще володіли релігійною формулою для всіх речей душі, формулою, значно чудовішою і всеохопнішою, аніж наш безпосередній досвід. Якщо ж для багатьох із нас християнське світобачення вже зблідло, то символічні скарбниці Сходу все ще сповнені див, які здатні ще довгий час живити нашу радість од споглядання їхніх нових убрань. Окрім того, ці образи – чи то християнські, чи буддистські, чи ще якісь там інші — гарні, загадкові і сповнені передчуттів.
Однак що більше вони для нас звичні, то більш затертими видаються через постійне використання, так що від них залишається тільки їхня банальна оболонка з її майже позбавленою сенсу парадоксальністю. Таємниця непорочного зачаття чи гомоузія Сина і Отця, чи Трійця, що не є Тріадою, вже більше не окрилюють жодної філософської фантазії. Вони перетворилися лише на об’єкти віри. Тому не дивно, що релігійна потреба, віровчення і філософська спекуляція освіченого європейця дедалі більше схиляються до символів Сходу, до грандіозного усвідомлення божества в Індії і безодень даоїстської філософії у Китаї. Саме так душу і дух античної людини захопили колись християнські ідеї.
Ніхто не змушував римлян імпортувати азійські культи, як своєрідні товари масового вжитку. Якби германським народам так зване «чужорідне християнство» й справді зовсім не підходило, то вони могли б легко відштовхнути його, коли зблід престиж римських легіонів, однак воно залишилось, адже відповідало наявній архетиповій основі. Втім, з плином століть християнство перетворилося на щось таке, що мало б здивувати його засновника, якби той міг його таким побачити. Підстави для таких історичних міркувань дає нам, наприклад, християнство негрів та індіанців. То чому ж нині Захід не повинен асимільовувати східні форми? Римляни ж задля посвяти ходили до Елевсина, Самофракії та Єгипту. А в Єгипті, як виглядає, розвинувся справжній туризм.
Боги Еллади і Риму загинули від такої ж хвороби, як і наші християнські символи: тоді, як і нині, люди виявили, що зовсім не замислювалися над рідною релігійною символікою. Боги ж чужоземців несли з собою ще недоторкану «mana». Їхні імена були дивовижні й загадкові, а їхні вчинки підозріло незбагненні, на відміну від заяложеної chronique scandaleuset Олімпу.
Азійські символи ми щонайменше не розуміли, а тому вони не здавались такими банальними, як наші зіста-
рені боги. Те, що тоді нове перейняли настільки ж безоглядно, як і – відкинули старе, не було проблемою.
Та чи стане воно проблемою нині? Чи зможемо ми одягнути готові символи, вирощені на екзотичному ґрунті, просочені чужою кров’ю, вимовлені чужими мовами, вигодовані чужою культурою, як наше нове вбрання? Жебрак у королівському одязі, король одягнутий, як жебрак? Це, без сумніву, можливо. Чи, може, десь у нашому серці ще живе вимога не влаштовувати маскараду, а можливо, ще й самим шити своє вбрання?"
Очевидно, що для людини з європейським світоглядом Таро буде ближче за "І Цзін" і буде саме тим зручним вбранням.
Скажу відразу, що до книжки Ніколс, я ставився зі скептицизмом і добре, що побоювання залишилися невиправданими. Бо маємо дійсно цікаву, насичену символікою та оригінальними баченнями книжку про Таро. Тут досить багато особистого досвіду: детальні описи того,як авторка прийшла до Таро і Юнґа. Життєві спостереження, ілюстраціями до багатьох арканів стали ситуації з життя. З одного боку це добре, з іншого - місцями мені цього "slice of life" було забагато.
Варто зазначити, що Ніколс дуже добре обізнана не тільки з працями Юнґа, якого постійно цитує, але й з роботами його учнів. В книзі рясно розсипані цитати з Фон Франц (Пуер Етернус), Едінґера (Еґо і архетип), Ноймана (Велика Матір).
Мені подобається, як Ніколс використала аркан "Колесо" для ілюстрації інтроверта та екстраверта при цьому цитуючи думку Юнґа, яку я навів вище:
"Я вважаю Колесо Таро чудовим засобом, що допомагає мені візуалізувати і проясняти те, що, на мою думку, позначав Юнґ термінами, які так часто неправильно розуміють: «інтроверт» та «екстраверт». Інтроверта я бачу як того, хто живе поряд з центром колеса. Його більше турбує внутрішній простір, споконвічні образи внутрішнього світу, ті архетипові постаті, інстинктивні для психіки людини, чия сутнісна природа залишається постійною протягом усіх поколінь. Екстраверта я бачу як того, хто живе ближче до зовнішнього краю, де його приваблює насамперед зовнішній простір. Йому подобаються рух, дослідження, пригода, і його стимулюють люди, місця та планети.
Для інтроверта ці стимули виглядають як загроза. До того, як він зможе розглянути зовнішній світ, йому спочатку треба увійти в контакт із собою, досліджуючи свої внутрішні глибини. Він виявляє сенс життя всередині, перш ніж зможе зайняти своє місце серед численних подій, якими його бомбардує зовнішній світ.
Для екстраверта, звісно, все якраз навпаки. Для нього метушня зовнішніх подій приваблива і значуща. А ось саме до хаотичних образів внутрішнього світу він не наважується безпосередньо наблизитися . Він відразу ж тягнеться до зовнішніх об'єктів і через свою взаємодію з зовнішніми стимулами, з'єднується зі своєю внутрішньою суттю. Підсумовуючи можна сказати, що інтроверт вчиться робити існуючи, а екстраверт вчиться існувати роблячи.
Очевидно (і на щастя) «чистого» прикладу ні екстраверта, ні інтроверта у природі не існує. Повністю інтровертна особистість була б наче посаджена у мушлю, нерухома, як овоч. Повністю екстравертна особистість жила б цілком на зовнішньому ободі, де її енергії оберталися б у всіх напрямках, як іскри від бенгальського вогника, залишаючи тільки випалену порожню оболонку.
Типи установок є жорсткою класифікацією; вони вказують на вроджену тенденцію, більш виражену в одних, ніж в інших. У міру того, як людина росте у самопізнанні, її вроджена схильність змінюється. Зрозумілий і прийнятий тип установки може стати джерелом сили, а не обмеження. В ідеалі, зріла людина розвиває всі межі своєї особистості, так що за її зовнішньою поведінкою важко визначити її вроджений тип. Наприклад: ця чарівна жінка, яка так легко почувається на трибуні, коли звертається до тисяч, може бути інтровертом, тоді як досить тихий, вчений чоловік, який сидить поряд з вами в аудиторії, може бути екстравертом. Іншими словами, визначальним фактором є не те, як людина поводиться відкрито, а скоріше як вона себе почуває. Розглядаючи інтровертованого публічного оратора та екстравертованого слухача, як спиці на уявному колесі, ми можемо сказати, що кожен із них трохи рушив до іншого, щоб тепер вони насолоджувалися спільністю. Кожен може говорити чужою мовою та ділитися зі своїм оточенням, не втрачаючи зв'язку зі своєю власною основою.
У своїй книзі «Таро на сьогодні» Майянанда використовує центр та коло Колеса Таро, щоб проілюструвати деякі відмінності між східною та західною філософією. Східна культура, за його словами, знаходиться недалеко від центру Колеса; це світ архетипових принципів, які повільно змінюються. Західна культура, яку він поміщає поблизу периферії Колеса, це світ, де ці архетичні ідеї були виділені в об'єктивну реальність. Інтровертований представник східного світу займається загальними принципами, вічними, єдностями, стабільністю і чистим буттям. Екстравертована західна людина більше занурена у світські об'єкти та переживання, її світ - царина руху, свободи, диверсифікації та спеціалізації. Східний світогляд починається біля центру Колеса і працює назовні; Західний - починаєттся біля кола і працює всередину.
Огляд східних і західних темпераментів і культур таким чином допоможе нам зрозуміти, що мав на увазі Юнґ, коли він сказав, що східні методи медитації, прийняті оптом, не відповідають західним потребам. Не можна жити творчо, приймаючи стиль, який не є власним. Всупереч тому, що може вважати розум, не прийняття протилежних йому способів, не завадить різним видам взаємодіяти один з одним. Швидше, саме «роблячи свою справу», але більш свідомо, кожен прийде до себе і врешті-решт знайде спосіб зв'язатися зі світом іншого і говорити його мовою. Тоді ці двоє можуть співпрацювати та ділитися своїми двома світами гармонійно.
Для цих двох протилежностей, так само як і для всіх інших, Колесо ідеальний гачок для проекцій, тому що його дія абсолютна і цілком аморальна. На відміну від терезів, які тримає Правосуддя, круглу форму колеса не можна використовувати для зважування та вимірювання відносних цінностей. Це не лінійна система, обід Колеса став символом для рівності та взаємовідносин раr excellence. Жодна позиція на ньому не є кращою, ніж будь-яка інша. "
Цікаво, що коли я знайшов цю цитату відбулась знаменита Синхронія - адже, на початку я помістив цю ж таки думку Юнґа, коли ще не дійшов до цього місця в книзі Ніколс! А це тільки доводить цінність даної роботи.
Найкращим розділом я вважаю опис фінального аркану "Світ". Ніколс зачіпає абсолютно всі важливі тропи і (якмі я в "Тетраморфеусі") проводить паралелі між Блазнем, Повішеним і Танцюристкою Анімою Мунді. Це три різновиди танцю.
А завершити свою рецензію хочу описом Тетраморфів, який Ніколс дає в розділі про аркан "Світ":
"Ідея про те, що дух і плоть, небо та земля пов'язані, як рівні частини єдиного цілого, повторюється у малюнку у чотирьох кутах Світу. У верхніх кутах з'являються два крилатих створіння і в нижніх кутах, два звіра на землі. Мандорли Христа часто зображують схожі постаті по кутках. Це чотири «звірі» Апокаліпсису. Можна розглядати їх як такі, що символізують багато речей, серед яких: чотири напрямки, чотири елементи, чотири гумори, чотири юнгіанські функції, чотири фіксовані, кардинальні та мутабельні знаки зодіаку, чотири Пророки та чотири Євангелісти. Нижче наведено кілька деталей, які можуть збагатити значення цих фігур:
ВІЛ представляє землю, Тільця, стабільність, терпіння, ретельність та чисту речовину. Його пов'язують зі Св. Лукою, тому що в євангелії від Луки наголошується робота Христа на землі.
ЛЕВ представляє вогонь, Лева, творіння, дух втілений і воскресений. Його пов'язують із Св. Марком.
АНГЕЛ представляє повітря, Водолія, ідеальні відносини, пошук істини, всесвітнього братства та взаємодії досконалого знання та досконалої форми. Його пов'язують зі Св. Матвієм і зображують у людському образі, тому що Св. Матвій підкреслював генеалогію Христа.
ОРЕЛ представляє воду і Скорпіона (бо він є висхідним Скорпіоном). Він означає емоційну силу, смерть та відродження. Його пов'язують зі Св. Йоаном, тому що його особливим інтересом були богонатхнення і божественна природа Христа.
Ці четверо стоять на варті та є свідками цього танцю життя. Разом вони утворюють квадрат, який містить у собі мандорлу."

Типи установок є жорсткою класифікацією; вони вказують на вроджену тенденцію, більш виражену в одних, ніж в інших. У міру того, як людина росте у самопізнанні, її вроджена схильність змінюється. Зрозумілий і прийнятий тип установки може стати джерелом сили, а не обмеження. В ідеалі, зріла людина розвиває всі межі своєї особистості, так що за її зовнішньою поведінкою важко визначити її вроджений тип. У своїй книзі «Таро на сьогодні» Майянанда використовує центр та коло Колеса Таро, щоб проілюструвати деякі відмінності між східною та західною філософією. Східна культура, за його словами, знаходиться недалеко від центру Колеса; це світ архетипових принципів, які повільно змінюються. Західна культура, яку він поміщає поблизу периферії Колеса, це світ, де ці архетичні ідеї були виділені в об'єктивну реальність. Інтровертований представник східного світу займається загальними принципами, вічними, єдностями, стабільністю і чистим буттям. Не можна жити творчо, приймаючи стиль, який не є власним. Всупереч тому, що може вважати розум, не прийняття протилежних йому способів, не завадить різним видам взаємодіяти один з одним. Швидше, саме «роблячи свою справу», але більш свідомо, кожен прийде до себе і врешті-решт знайде спосіб зв'язатися зі світом іншого і говорити його мовою. Тоді ці двоє можуть співпрацювати та ділитися своїми двома світами гармонійно.
Для цих двох протилежностей, так само як і для всіх інших, Колесо ідеальний гачок для проекцій, тому що його дія абсолютна і цілком аморальна. На відміну від терезів, які тримає Правосуддя, круглу форму колеса не можна використовувати для зважування та вимірювання відносних цінностей. Це не лінійна система, обід Колеса став символом для рівності та взаємовідносин раr excellence. Жодна позиція на ньому не є кращою, ніж будь-яка інша. "
Цікаво, що коли я знайшов цю цитату відбулась знаменита Синхронія - адже, на початку я помістив цю ж таки думку Юнґа, коли ще не дійшов до цього місця в книзі Ніколс! А це тільки доводить цінність даної роботи.
Найкращим розділом я вважаю опис фінального аркану "Світ". Ніколс зачіпає абсолютно всі важливі тропи і (якмі я в "Тетраморфеусі") проводить паралелі між Блазнем, Повішеним і Танцюристкою Анімою Мунді. Це три різновиди танцю.
А завершити свою рецензію хочу описом Тетраморфів, який Ніколс дає в розділі про аркан "Світ":
"Ідея про те, що дух і плоть, небо та земля пов'язані, як рівні частини єдиного цілого, повторюється у малюнку у чотирьох кутах Світу. У верхніх кутах з'являються два крилатих створіння і в нижніх кутах, два звіра на землі. Мандорли Христа часто зображують схожі постаті по кутках. Це чотири «звірі» Апокаліпсису. Можна розглядати їх як такі, що символізують багато речей, серед яких: чотири напрямки, чотири елементи, чотири гумори, чотири юнгіанські функції, чотири фіксовані, кардинальні та мутабельні знаки зодіаку, чотири Пророки та чотири Євангелісти. Нижче наведено кілька деталей, які можуть збагатити значення цих фігур:
ВІЛ представляє землю, Тільця, стабільність, терпіння, ретельність та чисту речовину. Його пов'язують зі Св. Лукою, тому що в євангелії від Луки наголошується робота Христа на землі.

Ці четверо стоять на варті та є свідками цього танцю життя. Разом вони утворюють квадрат, який містить у собі мандорлу."

Ine of my absolute favorite Tarot books. I wish I hadn't lost my copy & intend to replace it. I wish it would come out on Kindle...I first read a friend's borrowed copy when it came out in the 80's. I finally snagged my own copy in the 90's...and lost it with all my stuff in 2004 when I became homeless. It's on my "to replace soon" list!

I picked this up to understand the intertwining of Tarot with Jungian archetypes but seems like Nichols was the wrong choice; I feel the book does not contain at all what it claims to. Jung is rarely mentioned, and with his previous mentor, Freud, is quoted in inaccurate context. He was known for his usage of astrology but no knowledge of his use of Tarot is known. He knew about it, and found the Marseille deck accurate is a rumour nobody has been able to quite prove to be a fact.
Even so, I thought the author could provide her own correlations among the concepts but instead she just uses this book as a personal commentary. While some cards are adequately explained by her along with related artwork, she deems Rider-Waite far inferior (as do some Marseille purists) but in others exalts the deck. Her insights gave me few new points, in cards such as The Fool. Some comparisons were not as obvious or relevant to me, such as considering Strength a "female Magician", or seeing helplessness in The Hanged Man.
I found that I cannot very well rely on her depiction of the feminine cards; her view of women is highly troubling even if I give a leeway for the age this book was written in. She speaks quite lowly of womanhood. The Yin principle speaks of receptivity and women are seen as progenitors, but she seems like the kind of person who opposes contraception, planned parenting, and frowns on those who don't have children.
Another drawback was that she painted Tarot in a very Christian hue. The Marseille and Rider-Waite both have a Christian background, but the tenets also display a Hermetic and Pagan shade. Some of her context relates to bible stories, which I cannot find myself understanding due to a difference in culture and religion. And, let me say this as someone who grew up in a Hindu household in India, her assertions about "Hindus do this, do that" are totally inaccurate and not part of mainstream Hindu practices.
She cannot explain the Major Arcana very well, apart from the whole energy, vibes and fate sing-song. I saw a lot of people say how life-changing this book was, but I choose to stand apart owing to the inaccurate history and truckloads of subjective opinion and conjecture. I would recommend trying Robert Wang if Jung is really someone's horizon.

El libro trata sobre el significado de las cartas del tarot (en éste caso de los arcanos mayores).
Según describe el libro y el propio título, ya sea de paso, va sobre la perspectiva de Jung. Con una mirada más profunda hacia lo psicológico, y con un análisis más detallista para poder entender mejor cada arcano (ya pues no).
Sinceramente, este libro no trata sobre eso. Describen a dicho personaje (Jung) muy pocas veces en el libro, y cuando llega a recitar sobre él siempre son en citas de otros autores. Sólo está enfocado en la visión de la propia autora y en su propio enfoque hacia los significados de cada carta. A su vez, plasma su propia forma de ver el tarot, obviando todas las barajas (según parece, nulas para ella), menos la baraja de Marsella, dicho sea por palabras de la autora (porque la baraja es más antigua, y por ello se le da más validez y más credibilidad que otras). A parte de que comentaba muchas cosas que, de alguna manera: 1) No la entendías 2) Que no venía al caso que nos ocupa en este libro que es el tarot. Incluso, podía explayarse mucho en una carta y en otras solo dar una muy corta definición.
Sinceramente, no me molesta que se quiera enfocar en la baraja de Marsella. Sino que resta a las otras de una manera no muy correcta en su libro, solo porque a ella bajo a su perspectiva no le guste o no llega a conectar con ellas. Yo creo que esa información podría habersela ahorrado.
En definitiva, yo no recomendaría este libro ni a gente que ya está muy avanzada en la lectura de cartas y mucho menos a principiantes.

This book is 1) extremely interesting and generated a lot of new and intriguing thoughts for me (I mean, new to me at least), 2) a product of its time (late 70s) and full of weird datedness, and factual error about science, and subtle (occasionally blatant) sexism and other unpleasant glosses on gender things (which being Jung and Tarot, gender things come up a lot). But 1) was more important than 2), by a long shot.

Ótimo livro para entender alguns conceitos junguianos como psique, arquétipos, inconsciente coletivo... Leitura essencial para escritores e interessados na mitologia do Herói de mil faces e as diversas etapas em sua jornada de autoconhecimento e individuação. O texto fica meio nebuloso em alguns momentos por conta de simbolismos empregados pela autora (o que, provavelmente, serve para impulsionar a interpretação simbólica do próprio leitor), mas no mais, é um ótimo livro.

Como dice la autora, para adentrarse en este libro se debe separar la parte lógica de la parte emocional, pero la autora cae en el exceso de interpretación de los símbolos, mezclando creencias, culturas, significados y significantes. Son más de 500 páginas con opiniones personales e interpretaciones que no tienen sustento. Ella pensaría que al mezclarlas con obras de arte y citas literarias sería suficiente, pero de nada sirve ya que sobre interpreta las obras sin tener en cuenta que otras personas ya lo han estudiando antes y no hay nada de eso en todo el libro. Todo recae en sus especulaciones.
Puedo hacer énfasis y tomar como ejemplo cuando interpreta la carta de la muerte, tomando como base teórica a dioses prehispánicos de México, además de la figura de la catrina de Posada y nada de lo que dice parece tener un estudio previo y fidedigno de la cultura mexicana. Sólo hace una interpretación de lo que ella cree y representa la muerte con base a esas figuras.
No todo el libro cae sobre palabras huecas. Se rescata el hecho que algunos análisis de las cartas están sustentados sobre las teorías de Jung y sólo entonces se puede decir que sí hay un estudio de los arquetipos con base en un sustento que además la autora entiende y maneja de manera adecuada.
Entiendo que se buscaba dar un estudio alegado de la superchería pero bajo el método que se usó, no se aleja mucho de las prácticas de adivinación y creencias que rodean lo concerniente al tarot.
En mentes equivocadas podría ser un problema este texto.

This is a rehabilitated pioneering classic, which has aged well in certain regards but not others. I think it would be more like 3 1/2 stars. Some interesting insights, but I have a feeling (from the tidbit I read) that Rachel Pollock superseded this text.

This book is truly remarkable in its ability to tie together different subjects and topics to archetypes. While certainly dense and occasionally long-winded, Nichols's style provokes the reader to take this book one chapter at a time, take notes, reflect, and revise in a way that produces long-standing understanding. A book for both the beginner and adept Tarot reader alike.

La autora realiza una descripción del viaje que se realiza para encontrarnos con nuestro sí mismo, además me ratifica el amor que siento por el TAROT, como compañero de viaje y apoyo terapéutico para entender lo que el inconsciente revela y señala como la voz del Ver.

Worthwhile read but very mixed quality.
Each chapter delves into one of the cards of the major arcana, exploring the history of the card and its symbolism, using Jungian psychology as a lens with which the card and its multiple messages are analysed. It also includes many examples of art relating to a particular card across history. A lot of the discussion is excellent and gives a really good picture of the card.
However, the biggest problem with this book is its lack of consistency across chapters. The length, for example, is often rather different, and sometimes it appears Nichols struggles to find meaning in a card and offers a less-than-optimal interpretation. This seems to be a trend with the later chapters of the book which is disappointing. There's also some concerning statements such as the suggestion that schizophrenia is something triggered by one's life journey and can be fixed with therapy and further self growth (I don't think I have to explain what the science says with this one).
In any case, this book is about tarot, not scientific fact, and despite its flaws I still consider it a worthwhile read for those interested in learning more about the tarot cards and their history.

It teaches you how to develop you intuition, your psyche, and symbolism each of the TRUMP cards. It gives you a wide rage of answer somehow your intuition or unconscious brain absorbs that one or two important signs about the images. In the beginning, it was a bit boring as it uses the language the beginning/mid of the last century. However, as with any Tarot book I picked, is to follow through with it and not give up reading it. It’s trying to tell you something. You might not know right away. But the answer is there. I’m so glad I finished this book.
There are literally hundreds of Tarot book in the market. Why do we choose certain Tarot books rather than the others? Is because your intuition is trying to tell you something. I have a whole library about Tarot books and still today I go over them and reference them.
Be open minded.

March 12, 2015This book had some interesting content about Jung and feminism as well as some strong connections to literature and visual art. However, Nichols (like others in the Tarot community) posits, repeatedly, that visual art is superior to books/words for inspiring creativity and imagination, and I wholly disagree with this argument. But I found her claims--as counterarguments--helpful for strengthening my own argument in favor of reading everything one can find, including the frequently maligned little white books (LWBs) that accompany Tarot decks. There is also some lazy/inaccurate writing/research at times (e.g. she claims that, unlike natural circles, squares are man-made and unnatural, and a previous library patron penciled a note about crystals in the margin next to this sentence).

Another interesting tarot book--I particularly liked how this one shied away from being new age-y and focused instead on the psychological interpretations of the major arcana, which were similar to Rachael Pollock's "78 Degrees of Wisdom" in many ways (in particular how both books described the major arcana as representing a psychological process of growth and development). The style is associative and digressive, bringing in various subjects from art and mythology around the world, but I liked that sort of rambling discussion.

Interesting, but only deals with the major arcana. Also, Nichols' writing is a tad repetitive. I wouldn't recommend this one as an introduction to the tarot, but it's a good supplement to any collection of books on the subject. I recommend reading Robert M. Place's wonderful book, The Tarot: History, Symbolism, and Divination instead.
