Tight end. Boss. Neighbor. Certified jerk.

Abel Abbott was many things but in need of a girlfriend? He certainly was not.

So, you could imagine Scarlett Sawyer's surprise when he asked her to go from personal chef to pretend girlfriend on the day of her resignation.

She still had every intention of walking away from her ungrateful, ill-mannered boss until he made her an offer that she couldn't help but consider. Not only would it bring her financial security, but it also had the power to make her one and only childhood dream come true.

Scarlett's no became a tentative yes, and somewhere in the midst of their charade, the lines between ruse and reality became blurred.

The only question was, would an enigma from Abel's recent past tear them apart for good or bring them closer together than ever?

FUCK YOU TIKTOK this is singularly the WORST piece of literature i have ever had the displeasure of reading. its like The Wall of Winnipeg and Me on LSD, but you'll wish you were on LSD when reading this.

first of all, where are the introductions? mae and scarlett are "sisters," sure, but how did they meet lea? what kind of parent is so deranged they'd name their kids october and halloween ? WHY DID THE AUTHOR CHOOSE TO LEAD US (AND SCARLETT) TO BELIEVE THAT ABEL'S EX IS ACTUALLY HIS half-sister? and why were we teased that lea and fortune are magically together and are expecting a child? mitä vittua?

the whole book is so rushed, especially the start, and the last 4 chapters are basically scarlett and abel fucking.

i hate to be that bitch with a brand new book that has so few reviews this early, but i could not fucking STAND this book. i honestly should’ve just DNF'd it early on like i initially wanted to, but i was curious enough about abel & aera’s relationship to keep reading (even tho i had figured it out by the halfway point).

all the characters in this book were annoying as hell. abel? freakishly obsessed with a woman he’s barely spoken to, and appears to have a brain condition that renders him incapable of functioning like a normal human being around her for 8 months. scarlett? scarily co-dependent with her best friend that she insists on calling her sister, and seems to have the emotional awareness of a 13 y/o. i also never knew that liking a color could be a personality trait, but hey, you learn something new everyday. the rest of the side characters? they were all loud and obnoxious, and basically read like the same person split into 3.

as someone who’s only willing to suspend their disbelief with contemporary romances to a certain extent, this book surpassed what i could tolerate. from the way abel acted like a fucking alien at the start of the book, not knowing how to carry a normal conversation & throwing away perfectly good food for no reason, to the fact that he bribed scarlett into the fake dating situation with his HOUSE, and worst of all, that they’d only been FAKE DATING for 3 months & just started dating for real for a FEW DAYS before he ASKED HER TO MOVE IN WITH HIM, absolutely NONE of it was believable. i mean, come on. it’s 2022. what kind of a cooking blog gets a million visits a month?? i don’t even think those collectively get a million views a year LOL.

the last 20% also completely took me out. i guess in order to make up for the lack of smut in the first 250 pages of the book, the author decided to cram as many sex scenes as possible in the next 50. to say it was overkill is an understatement. and that epilogue. ohhhhhh my god, that epilogue physically hurt to read. *spoiler warning* not scarlett being a desperate ring chaser!!! 🤮 and of course, just when i thought it couldn’t possibly get ANY worse…it did. they had a random ass shotgun wedding THE DAY AFTER THE PROPOSAL and immediately wanted to try for babies. ohhhhhmyfuckinggodjustkillmenow.

This actually reminded me a lot of The Wall of Winnipeg and Me. The main difference being the main male protagonist wasn’t emotionally constipated. I actually really liked this book. If you’re looking for a cute quick read that has the fake dating trope, this one’s for you

I’m gonna be a bitch just to save a lot of you your time and list a few reasons why this book was a 1 star read for me:

1. it was moving wayyyy too quick, u aren’t even given a few seconds to get to know the characters beyond their exterior (and their exterior was not too good).

2. the characters were almost unbearable. im still confused about Mae and Scarlett’s relationship and whether or not they were sisters. and while abel was a good guy and it was refreshing to see a book where the guy falls first, even I thought that he hated her, like why is he throwing away her food ??????? all of the characters could have been improved 10X more had the author spent a little more time on this book and developing a story where the readers truly feel connected to everyone they read about.

3. when scarlett found out about his relationship with aera she was acting entirely like a seventh grader … there was no need for doing anything that she did. I understand that most books NEED a dramatic falling out, but this one felt entirely unnecessary and honestly added nothing good to the story. I love a good heartbreak mixed with groveling, but this just didn’t do it for me. to add on to the seventh grader personality, her and her friends toilet papered his house … something I was doing back in middle school?

4. one of my pet peeve is when a newer book is eerily similar to an older book, and this one just felt too much like The Wall of Winnipeg; from the plot, to the characters … it was like getting deja vu. while the book wasn’t entirely the same, i just had a hard time separating the two.

It’s certainly not a TERRIBLE book, but with the way this book was advertised I ultimately just felt like I was let-down.

3.5 ⭐️

this is light, sweet, fluffy, and with a little misunderstanding.

abel (28) hired scarlett (24) to be his personal chef and she's been working for him for 8 months already. he only hired her because he was dumbfounded when he first saw her, and when he learned scarlett and the coach's daughter are friends he asked for her information. however, he always got tongue-tied around her and he always ended up responding in grunts or he doesn't speak to her at all. scarlett thought that he hated her thus making their boss/employee relationship stunted. they rarely meet and speak, she prepare meals for him and give him instructions on how to reheat them if needed using sticky notes.

one day, abel's coach approached and told him to find a girlfriend to show that their team is family oriented and each player is committed. he is single, he don't date and he never sleep around, because he's pining after scarlett and nobody knows about it. the media has branded him the "unattainable bachelor" and the team's PR wanted him to fix his image. with this information, abel asked scarlett to be his fake girlfriend, which she didn't say yes to immediately. in exchange for this favor, he promised her that she'll get his house in return. it was scarlett and her bff's dream to live close to each other, and currently she's been living in her friend's pool house. abel gave her all the time she needed to think about his proposition and after a week scarlett said yes to him, and that's where everything started.

this so sweet, cute, romantic, and freaking slooooowburn. the first time they do the deed was around 84% of the book. they fooled around but the actual act happened almost at the end of the book. anyway, it was adorable reading how they are very sweet and caring with each other or how they are "fake" dating but none of what they do screams fake. they were both attracted to each other and are both slowly falling while still being in this ruse, and it was satisfying and swoony to read. the thoughtfulness of these mcs are so endearing and i'm here for all of it.

though i didn't like the cause of breakup, but i did get abel's reason for not informing scarlett immediately. a little bit of miscommunication and wrong assumption, thanks to the paparazzi, thank fuck he pulled out the stops to explain and apologize to her. not that he needed to grovel but i still liked his efforts. and scarlett didn't stay mad at him, not that there's worth getting angry for his reason.

overall, i did enjoy this and it made me smile the majority of it. and i think it's really fun if readers wants to have some light rom-com.

HE SPAT IN HER MOUTH!!!!

4.5 stars overall
Was an AMAZING read
He fell so hard from the start and that was right up my alley😮‍💨 Congrats to Abel being my first ever book boyfriend (that I can recall) with the name Abel.

His nickname for her 100% gave Josh Chen and I was here for it👏

Loved Scarlett to pieces, she wasn't annoying, was super chill and relatable....especially with that love of cooking (I feel you girl).
When she burned the dress.... you better believe I took a moment to meditate on that level of pettiness... I truly hope to achieve it one day.

The only reason this wasn't a complete 5 stars was the little jokey jokes about a certain religious group...it was, yes a little funny but also a bit tactless....they do honest work voluntarily....they could be out committing crimes or something....maybe we shouldn't make fun of them....consider one of them being a fellow reader and seeing that....I for one would a little upset/ offended

Good read overall though... got me out of a slump
Think I'll be moving onto the Red Zone next

I really enjoyed this slow burn sports romance. I am a sucker for fake dating especially between boss and employee. I liked Scarlett and Abel, but I do wish Scarlett made him grovel a bit more. I felt like there was a lot of build up and fall out for a short resolution, otherwise great read!

ok this was tiktok scam at its prime, don't know how I had the will to finish this book but I do deserve a medal for it.

I hope y'all who gave this book a high rating, found a sense in the whole shitshow bc I surely had not.

* at the beginning he threw away all the food she cooked him bc she made him so nervous he couldn't eat??
* he shushed her out of the house bc it was coming over her new found sister, whom she thought was her gf/ex and for what??? literally no purpose for this motive
* all the nervousness fucking evaporated all of a sudden just like that, I really don't know how
* again why keeping the sibling thing a secret???? literally no one gave a shit about them being related
* both MC have a change in their manners that I really had to think and read again if i changed book all of a sudden
* the writing is really bad
* what the actual fuck was that end
* what the actual fuck was the whole book

and this is more of one of my rants but did you not have to be subscribed or already be a member of like ancestry (or i do what was it) to be able to find other people who might be related to you??
the "oh look, due to this totally legit site you were not even subscribed and have an account, to which I've sent a blood sample and a few hair to be analysed I might be your sister"
???????? istg these things happen only in America

Okay when i first started reading this book i thought it was going to be a 4 or 5 star read but as i was reading it i don’t really know what happened, it quickly became a bit boring for me. Everything was happening so fast, at the speed of light, like one day they were “enemies” and hated each other and the other day they’re whole ass friends and taking it a step up with the fake dating. I felt like i didn’t even know much about the characters except the obvious, all the characters were that was and it was bothering me so much. I even liked Mae and Lea more than the main characters so 3 stars only for them.

this is a random collection of words that just so happened to create a book. i initially liked the concept of the book, but to say it was poorly executed is an understatement.

it felt like reading a never ending internal monologue, where details were just thrown in the conversation as an afterthought. there was no point where i felt a connection to any of the characters. not even on a “i relate to scarlett because of…” but the only characteristic of scarlett i know is she’s a ginger, and a personal chef. character development doesn’t exist in this world and you’re just supposed to know them already.

i’ll be honest, toward the end of the book i began to skim just to be finished. i was very confused in the epilogue and i’m not sure if it was my lack of reading or the author’s lack of detail. either way this book was a lot of something. what that something was i could not tell you.

DNF I need authors to stop writing characters that are self inserts. like why is our introduction to the FMC her saying she has “book boyfriends”? before authors kept making their characters english majors and now we have to listen to characters that talk like terminally online losers oh BROTHER! i know authors are trying to cater to online audiences to get temporary clout but i’m over it it’s so cheap and these books are just copies of the same lame forgettable shit. someone save the romance genre and bring back real writers please.

I was so surprised by how much I loved this book!!! Fake dating?? Always so yummy, but fake dating a man you think hates you but has loved you the entire time??? Sign me up. 🫡 These characters are so loveable and Abel was the sweetest. 😭 This book is such a quick and cute read.

“Do you want to get married one day?” “To you or in general?” I taunted. “Be serious,” she whispered sternly. Oh, I was being serious.

Okay so this was a cute, quick and lighthearted fake dating romance. Abel & Scarlett were very good together. I did like the plot but there were a few missing additions like I knew that Abel is a sportsman but nothing related to the sport is actually mentioned. It only tells that he goes to practice and even his teammates are not mentioned (except October). So it was a bit inadequate towards the sports side but nevertheless, I enjoyed it. Can't wait to read Mae & October's book next!

Not gonna lie, I read this solely because tiktok kept on showing me this book and I took it as a sign. However this book was so cute and fun I needed it for sure as it was a light read as well. This is was giving very strong The Wall of Winnipeg and Me and I was all here it for it. I especially liked the communication going on and it was nice to see even if Abel had a hard time expressing it which I completely understood where he was coming from. It felt a bit rushed at the end and I feel like it was missing something at the end but I can't put my finger on what is missing. Overall, is this book my next obsession? No, but I had a good time escaping from my studies.

SWOON SWOON SWOON.

Oh my gosh. This book was so cute. If anyone has read The Cheat Sheet by Sarah Adams.. this is the ADULT version of that… except of course they weren’t childhood friends. There was so much miscommunication between the two that I wished I could jump into the pages and smack some sense into Abel and Scarlett.

FAKE DATING, RICH MMC, POSSESSIVENESS, ANGST, TENSION. SPORTS ROMANCE. AMAZINGNESS. These two could’ve easily gotten into the sheets sooner rather than later if they both grew a pair sooner!

I was screaming, crying and throwing up with this book. Like when will it be my turn?????

This book was super cute! Abel is a tight-end for a football team and has the biggest crush on his personal chef Scarlet. Normally football players are portrayed and playboys who will always go after the girl they want but it was not the case for this book. It took so long for Abel to actually admit his feelings to Scarlet! Abel was super sweet and considerate, always doing things to make her smile! He was so observant and caring. The nickname Red did. confuse me a bit as they described her hair to be chestnut and not read, and there was no other indication of why that was her nickname. The twist was definitely unexpected and was very sudden. I think that Abel and Scarlet definitely need to communicate better but overall it was a cute book!

Oh God.

Oh God, this was awful.

First off, you only need about 0.3% of your brain power to read through this. This is basic writing at it’s best (I’m so sorry to say this to a newish, independently published author, but NO).

The book is essentially a rip off of The Wall of Winnipeg and Me, Scarlett is a personal chef to football player Abel, whom has a crush on her (I will also give you ONE GUESS as to what nickname he gives her). He is, however, incapable of acting, speaking, or interacting with any fellow human being, so is therefore grumpy and quiet, which Scarlett immediately takes as him hating her. One of the wonderfully mature ways Abel’s shyness manifests itself is by leaving the breakfast she makes him every morning on top of the trash, because he is too nervous to eat around her. Because...that math maths.

Now, for reasons still unclear to me, his coach tells him he needs to find a fake girlfriend (for…PR? For…matchmaking? For…practice in speaking to others?). I do not understand this, but we will move on for the sake of the other atrocities that take place in this.

Namely, they both have zero personality, except when he stomps and grumbles whenever she speaks to anyone other than himself. My favorite interaction is with a teammate named October…and whose sister’s name is (and I shit you all not), Halloween. We go through another few hundred pages of two characters who have the emotional awareness and maturity of 13 year-olds, random characters hopping in and out (with the WORST names), and this man having zero friends, or zero conversations with ANYONE.

And the ending…the ending elicited an audible groan from me. ().

No. No, thank you. BookTok, SHAME ON YOU.

hmmm lots and lots of thoughts on this. i read some of the reviews before i read this book, and then also watched some tiktoks. tiktok loves this book, goodreads does not. i fall somewhere closer to team goodreads. here’s some of my takeaways:

1. the timing was a little odd things felt like kinda rushed but then all of a sudden it’s been like months of the fake dating ?? idk maybe i’m just dumb

2. so many repetitive lines. i was sick of hearing “____ all of them” after the second line. and read it like four more times

3. scarlett burning a nice dress? immature.

4. also the tiktok scene everyone talks about where he runs to her house in the middle of the storm to see if she’s okay?? not really how that happens. he just wants to see her and there happens to be a storm, then when he gets there he flips out on her for staying in her pool house (which she lives in????) bc he says it’s unsafe and she needs to go to his house ???

5. also maybe this is just me? but if the word “snark” or “sneer” is used in a book, i automatically assume it’s used in a negative way. but there were a few times that it would get used in what sounded like jt was supposed to be a positive way and it just was confusing?

6. didn’t love that we reached the climax of the story, and then had five chapters of 90% smut?? i love smut don’t get me wrong but it felt like a lot all at once

7. i don’t really feel like the characters had much chemistry, that we got to see. it was a whole lot of miscommunication, then a tiny bit of communication, then the fmc overthinking everything and freaking out and the mmc offering comfort when he literally doesn’t know her?

i try to be very open about books i read but!!! this was not a fav. there were some cute moments and the storyline had sooooooo much potential to be great, but overall not a huge fan IMO please don’t jump me omg im sorry
