في البداية جذبتني هذه الرواية بسبب كلمة الحيوانات لأني احب الحيوانات!
رواية قصيرة ممتعة ممكن يتم الانتهاء منها في جلسة او جلستين
تتكلم الرواية عن شاب اسمه بوبي، هذا الشاب عمره ٣١ لكن عقليته كعقلية طفل بعمر ٩ سنوات. عند هذا الشاب إعاقة ذهنية او تأخر نمو. ضحكت و بكيت و انا اقرا الرواية. شعرت بالحزن على بوبي و على معاملة
البشر القاسية ضد الحيوانات. كانت رواية ممتعة و محزنة و مؤلمة
حبيت اسلوب الكاتب في طريقة جعل الشخصية بوبي يعبر عن مشاعره و افكاره! ما كانت طريقة رجل بالغ بالكلام و بنفس الوقت ليست طريقة طفل صغير بالكلام، كانت طريقة كلام مناسبة تماماً لرجل بتفكير طفل! تفكير بوبي بريء و طيب لكن بنفس الوقت ليس ساذج، و يعرف كيف يتصرف بمفرده الى حدٍ ما. اعتقد صراحة ان الكاتب ابدع جداً بذكاء بكتابة الشخصية بوبي! و بالمناسبة بوبي جداً لطيف طوال الرواية شعرت اني اريد معانقته! و بوبي شاب وسيم، مظهره ما يعطي انطباع انه بعقل طفل، لهالسبب في رجال آخرين بالرواية يحاولوا انهم يتحرشوا به، و شعرت ان هذا الجانب كان محزن و مثير للاهتمام بنفس الوقت ان الكاتب يسلط الضوء على هذا الجانب في التحرش بالرجال.
يعيش بوبي في بيت فيه عنف، لهالسبب يحب الحيوانات لأنه يشعر انهم يمنحوه التشجيع و الطاقة انه يصمد و يستمر بالعيش بالرغم من شعوره بالوحدة في غرفته بدون حديثه مع ناس آخرين. شعرت كما لو اني انا و بوبي جداً نتشابه من هالناحية!
الشخصيات الطيبة في الرواية كانت وجباتهم دائماً عبارة عن خبز او فاصولياء بصلصة الطماطم او بطاطا مقلية او جبن او بيض، حسيت ان الكاتب تعّمد يكتب عن وجباتهم حتى يظهر انهم فيجيتاريان ضد قتل جميع الحيوانات؟ تمنيت لو كانوا فيغن! ممكن الكاتب على وقت كتابته للرواية ما كان يعرف معنى فيغن 😆
اسلوب الكتابة جداً سلس و ممتع. و ايضاً ترجمة شوقي برنوصي كانت جيدة جداً و سلسة اثناء القراءة. اخر احداث الرواية مو كثير عجبتني و لكن بعطيها ٥ نجوم لأني جداً انسجمت معها و كانت فعلاً تحرك العواطف.

A tremendous, disturbing little novel about confronting and overcoming fear. In his introduction to this long-overdue rerelease, by freight books.co.uk, Alan Warner points out that "Roald Dahl, summing up his favourite books of the year, wrote of it:
I got more pleasure from this slim volume than from all the fat novels of the last twelve months put together.
As, I hope, a soon-to-be-reader of this novel, you may encounter a little Joycean irony ( a character's name ) hidden within Dahl's praise."
I suspect Warner meant not only to point out the play on the character's name, but indeed his entire ethos. For unnerving as it is, just reading All The Little Animals leaves one feeling lighter, as though unneeded layers have been sliced through and stripped away. Harrowing, raw, poignant, poetic and brimming with humanity and road kill. I highly recommend a few hours in Bobby's company. You'll never forget him.

With only 144 pages All the Little Animals is a relatively short read which can easily be read in just a few hours, and one which I, once I picked it up, didn’t want to put down. The book doesn’t have a complicated plot and is most definitely not a white-knuckle ride that will keep you guessing till the end but it doesn’t have to be one in order to be memorable. The appeal of this novel lies not with its complexity but with all those emotions that are packed into such a tiny book.
Bobby is a 31-year-old man who, as a result of being involved in a car accident in his childhood, is trapped in the body and mind of a young boy. Bobby lives with his mother, the owner of a local department store, until she marries a man Bobby calls ‘The Fat’ and her health begins to deteriorate due to an abusive marriage and eventually dies. He, then, is forced to live with ‘The Fat’ and put up with verbal and physical abuse on a daily basis. When ‘The Fat’ kills his last remaining friend – a mouse called Peter – he decides to leave. Somewhere along the way he meets Mr Summers, a mysterious – and as it turns out rather peculiar – little man. According to Mr Summers, who detests everything about the world we live in today, his job is to find and bury all the little animals that were run over by cars or lorries. He says “people can bury each other but the animals have to be helped. Not just rabbits and rats, but all the little animals. Other men kill them and I bury them”. Soon this eccentric man becomes Bobby’s teacher, his guardian and only friend and the one who eventually helps him overcome his traumas, let go of his fears and become free.
As I said, the plot might not be a complicated one but Bobby’s personality and his friendship with Mr Summers definitely makes up for it. The simplicity and childlike innocence that characterises Bobby’s narrative is both charming and heart-warming. His relationship with the old man and the way he talks about him and their adventures brought tears to my eyes quite a few times and is something I’m not going to forget anytime soon.
I would add, though, that even though it might be considered as young adult fiction based on its plot and its language, I would rather classify it as an adult-oriented book. There is both verbal and physical violence in the story – and especially the last two or three chapters – which might not be suitable for the younger generation, no matter how much of an easy read it may seem. Hamilton also touches upon certain subjects which might be more easily understandable or digestible for and appreciated by adults than by the younger generation, thus the book might not have the same effect on a younger reader.
All the Little Animals is a short but touching story of friendship, hope and starting over and which fans of contemporary fiction are guaranteed to enjoy.

تعجز كلماتي لوصف هذه القصة القصيرة للكاتب الاسكتلندي ووكر هاملتون . رواية كتبت بسرد هادئ وبصوت بطلها ( بوبي) ذو ٣١ عاما الذي أصيب في طفولته إثر حادث تسبب في ضموره عقليا فترعاه والدته الثرية صاحبة متجر معروف وتقرر لاحقا الزواج بأحد العاملين هناك ليصبح هذا الشخص لاحقا الكابوس الذي يلاحق ( بوبي) ويقرر الهرب من زوج أمه السيئ ومن ثم يتعرف على رجل يدعى السيد ( سامرز) ذو الطباع الغريبة ويرافقه في تجواله ليتعلم بوبي مهنة دفن الحيوانات الصغيرة النافقة .
قد تبدو هذه القصة بسيطة وجيدة ولكن وجدت الكثير من العمق الذي يمكن العثور عليه من خلال تتبع شخصية ( بوبي) ونظرته البريئة للأشخاص والطبيعة والحياة
نظرة قلما نفتقدها في عصر الاستهلاك والنزوع للسلطة وفوقية الإنسان تجاه كل تلك الأشياء ضئيلة الحجم.
وراء هذه البساطة يكمن كتاب قصير أشبه بالحلم يستحق القراءة لروعته

November 4, 2020never seen the adaptation but sth about the clarity of the prose here has me remembering it more like something i watched than something i read. (alan warner's praise makes sense since it's a quality i also found in the sopranos / stars in the bright sky.) anti-car-culture stance was a nice lil garnish as well! deserves better than to be a forgotten christian bale movie

I've seen the film adaptation of this novella a number of times, so it was admittedly a little difficult for me to separate my preconceived impressions and expectations of the story from that. I didn't really know what to expect, and still on reflection I am not entirely sure what to think. To be honest, I expected it to be really problematic and outdated, considering it's a book written in the 1960s from the perspective of a disabled man. In ways, yeah, I guess it is, but the language surrounding Bobby's experience was generally inoffensive and I feel actually quite conductive of what it can sometimes feel like trying to navigate a world that isn't welcoming to you, or illogical.
As the main character and subject of the first-person narrative, Bobby seems to be the only character that has any sort of substance. The only other two characters, really, are the Fat and Mr Summers. Neither of which have any sort of real development or tangible impact. I do like the premise of the story. It speaks of outcasts who have found their own unlikely world together. It's a slightly unorthodox found-family tale. It centres around compassion for animal life. However, I don't necessarily believe Hamilton is a skilled writer, and ultimately I felt a little let down. I feel quite guilty about saying that because I love the movie so much. I don't really like to admit that an adaptation is better than the original.

J'étais venue pour les petits animaux. Je pensais lire une ode à la nature, une fable écologique, des descriptions qui m'auraient touchée par leur justesse, leur injustice, j'aurais aimé en connaître plus sur ce petit monde des champs et des littoraux, j'aurais aimé plongé plus avant dans ce travail presque mystique qu'effectuent Mr Summers et Bobby...
Mais il n'y en a pas assez à mon goût. Peut-être que le personnage de Bobby ne l'aurait pas permis (et j'avoue ne toujours pas savoir que penser de ces romans qui tentent de se mettre dans la peau de personnages affectés de troubles mentaux et de déficiences cognitives), peut-être que l'histoire résidait effectivement ailleurs, mais je suis passée à côté du récit et de son escalade avant sa chute.

This is a little book that covers some big subjects - greed, cruelty, sexual abuse, bullying, murder and the selfish idea that progress for mankind overrules any other consideration.
Don't think that this is a dark and depressing book, there is plenty of light in the shade and the growing kinship between Bobby and Mr Summer is a joy. Even the revelation of Mr Summers past actions only serves to bring them closer and reveal a parallel experience.
The countryside and nature are beautifully observed and described with a child like freshness, even the frightening and grisly bits!
It is a quick read and hard to put down once you start. I flew through it in a single sitting but I will definitely read it again just for the pleasure of its use of language and imagery.

Jo, a když k tomu mám příležitost, rozřezávám automobilům pneumatiky.'"

Příběh vyprávěný mužem-chlapcem asi není úplně unikátní, ale příběh samotný mě docela chytil. Možná mi je chybí trochu víc realističnosti příběhu, ale spousta věcí jde svést na sníženou inteligenci vyprávějící postavy... Určitě doporučuji

This is a short, heart-warming little book that, being an animal-lover, attracted me by its title. I suppose it can be interpreted in various ways but for me the main message was a protest against rampant speciesism which promotes the idea that no matter how depraved and evil the human, human life is intrinsically sacrosanct and inviolable whereas animals’ lives are of no consequence and can be used or terminated as we see fit, and the smaller the animal the less their lives matter.
Another aspect of the story is that of friendship and the author beautifully illustrates that true friendship does not depend on having the same age, background and social standing but is a question of affinity.
Then of course there is the good versus bad, money doesn’t buy happiness aspect : the greedy and sadistic stepfather rolling in money versus Mr. Summers and Bobby who find peace and serenity with their simple lives enriched by all the little animals. It may also mean that anyone can live a full and happy existence if they are lucky enough to find a place and a way of life that suits their personality and their needs.

عمل قصير يقرأ في جلسة او اثنتين .. ينتمي إلى صنف الإيكو فكشن ان صح التعبير .. يكشف عن مدى توحد الإنسان مع الطبيعة الأم بكل مافيها من كائنات على اختلافها ووحشية الإنسان المعاصر والرأسمالي في تدميرها في الوقت ذاته .. يكشف عن هذا المفهوم او هذه الفكرة من خلال توليف قصة شاب ذوي احتياجات خاصة بعمر ال٣١ وبعقل طفل ذو تسع سنوات بسبب حادثة ما في صغره، ليشكف لنا مدى قسوة الإنسان وظلمه الذي لا يتورع ليس فقط مع بني جنسه بالاعتداء والاغتصاب والتوحش والظلم والسرقة، ولكن حتى مع الطبيعة في ايذاءها وتخريبها وظلم مافيها بالقتل والسحق والتخريب وإنشاء المصانع والمناجم لتلويثها وهتك عذريتها وبكارتها .. فما الذي يحمل شخص ما لتكريم الحيوانات والبهيمة بدفنها، واهمال دفن جثة بشرية ملقاة على قارعة الطريق او حرق جثة بشرية في فرن ؟!
حسب ما يروى بأن الكاتب الاسكتلنديّ توفي بعد نشر روايته الثانية، اما هذا العمل الذي لم يأخذ حقه في الصيت والانتشار كجثة حيوان مرمية على قارعة الطريق السريع والذي كتبه بعد حادثة مشابهة لقصة بوبي الشاب مع دفن الحيوانات على اختلافها لتكون نبوءة ربما لموته في عمر الرابعة والثلاثين ..

رواية طريفة ورائعة، ومستوى الكتابة والإلهام فيها أيضا لا يتغير حتى النهاية.. والترجمة رائعة.
لا تصعب ملاحظة تركيز العمل على احتكاك العالمين: العالم الأقل رتبةً وأكثر هامشية، والعالم الأعلى من ذلك. التعبير عن قتل الحيوانات الصغيرة والتخلّص منها يجسد هذه النظرة وهذا الاحتكاك بينهما، وكل الأشياء والظروف وأحوال المناخ والعلاقات وأحوال الجسد ووجبات الطعام والممارسات اليومية والتفكير في المقاومة وفعل المقاومة وما شابه؛ كلها تكتسب معنى آخر في ظل الحدث الرئيس، معنىً يوظّف فيه الكاتب ببراعة اختلاف الحياة وطريقة عيشها عند الفئة المهمَّشة..
التهميش هنا ليس عنصريا ولا طبقيا ولا جنسيا ولا أي من هذه التصنيفات المعتادة. التهميش هنا إنساني بحت، قائم على اعتبارات إنسانية واختيارات شخصية رافضة للضعف والعنف معا، صنعتها شخصية شابة تتحدث عن نفسها (بوبي) وأخرى مسنّة يتم التحدث عنها (السيد سامرز)، وينتهي العمل بعد احتكاك هذين العالمين بشدّة.

Bobby, un jeune adulte un peu différent des gens de son âge parvint à échapper à la surveillance de son beau-père tyrannique. Une belle histoire d'amitié se forme alors avec M. Summers, un homme âgé qu'on qualifierait de marginal.
J'ai pris cette histoire comme un conte philosophique qui noircit à l'extrème les pires traits de la nature humaine : sentiment de toute puissance, de supériorité, de pouvoir... Tout cela mis en opposition à la vie qu'ont choisi de mener Bobby et M. Summers faite de thé, de sandwich et de respect du vivant. Ils ne sont pas "heureux", beaucoup de souffrance est exprimée jusqu'au bout, mais une certaine sérénité se dégage de cette vie simple.
L'écriture mêle avec habilité la candeur de Bobby et la noirceur de son passé, ses cauchemars. Ce personnage m'a fait penser à Lennie, dans "Des souris et des hommes".

Der 31 jährige Bobby ist geistig behindert, nach dem Tod seiner Mutter wird er vom Stiefvater misshandelt, weshalb von zu Hause wegläuft. Unterwegs begegnet er Mr. Summers, der ihn aufnimmt, ihn wie einen normalen Menschen behandelt. Mr. Summers sammelt tote Tiere auf der Straße ein und begräbt sie, Bobby lernt bei ihm alles, was er dazu wissen muss. Als Bobby von Bekannten erkannt wird, erzählt er Mr. Summers seine Geschichte und sie beschließen etwas zu unternehmen.
Die Geschichte wird aus der Sicht von Bobby erzählt, der Stil ist einfach, aber nicht oberflächlich, eher wie ein Kind etwas erzählt, das schon erwachsen ist. Es war berührend und ich hatte beim Lesen ein Gefühl der inneren Ruhe.
Mit nur 121 Seiten ist das Buch ideal für einen Tag am Strand oder zur Entspannung im Garten.

A truly remarkable book. The characters did put me in mind of "Of Mice and Men" with its depiction of life "on the margins" but I found it as profound as Steinbeck, and with its own originality.
A compact novella but that only deems to enhance its message, in concentrating in a few pages the narrative and the description of the characters - and so many emotions - greed, hate, confusion, compassion, love, and the realisation that just like all the little animals we all have the right to respect and our own place in this very often cruel world.
It will take me along time to forget Bobby and Mr Summers!!

Knihy s nestandardními vyprávěči většinou patří mezi mé oblibenkyně. Co mi tady nesedělo... vlastně ani pořádně nevím. Možná celková strohost, která rozhodně byla účelová, ale mi tady neseděla a má láska k panu Summersovi rychle pominula. Přesto se jedná o jeden z těch roztomilejších příběhů a byla by škoda ho vynechat, zvlášť když zabere jen krátkou chvíli.

I saw a curious film on cable television when I was in middle school, and the story of the young man and the compassion of The Work stuck with me for over 20 years. After searching it up to convince myself I hadn’t imagined it, I discovered Hamilton and his stories. It’s as simple and heartbreaking and lovely as I remember.

To Mr. Summers and Bobby the world consists of two kinds of living things, the things worth being killed and the things that are worth being buried when killed by the first kind of living thing - human and all the little animals. It's simple, weird, simply weird and weirdly simple.

Quelle étrange et merveilleuse histoire, découverte par hasard en librairie. Des sujets compliqués y sont abordés, mais je l’ai trouvé tout en douceur… Ce garçon mérite définitivement un chien ou deux.
