I remembered starting to watch this but not getting past the first episode for some reason. At least I made it THROUGH the first episode,* rather than having to stop halfway through, say, High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even in Another World! when they had to pull the old "I have to give mouth-to-mouth!" trope ALREADY, barely into introducing the characters.

This is less awful but still kind of meh, meh enough that I'm tempted to grade "two-stars meh" by the Goodreads scale but it's not as bad as other books I've rated two stars (on the LITERALLY ANY OTHER FIVE-STAR scale)—Ryota is rewarded for being horrendously overworked in the normal world by spontaneously finding himself summoned to another world by way of being an "item drop" from killing a dungeon monster. He immediately befriends the person who "won" him, and they bond on the basis of shared poverty: Ryota being completely new to this world with nothing but the clothes on his back, and Emily (the girl who killed the slime that dropped Ryota) being so hapless as to only be able to kill the slimes on the topmost level in the specific dungeon where he spawned, such that she LIVES there—unable to earn enough to rent (much less OWN) a home.

I say rewarded, but Ryota quickly finds that not only does he start with the absolute worst stats, he apparently cannot "level up" past Level 1, as an item assesses his maximum level as 1. The payoff is when he is FINALLY able to kill even a weak slime, the item drop is phenomenally good—where Emily would get a single bean sprout, Ryota gets a bulk pack of FANTASTIC-tasting bean sprouts from the same type of monster. This odd skill makes it such that Ryota can farm particularly valuable versions of the same items everyone else can get.

The BIG payoff is when he finds out there are dungeons and monsters that supposedly drop *no items.* (except air...?) So, naturally, Ryota wants to test this out for himself and finds .

That's the basic premise: Middling protagonist has one thing going for him and abuses the heck out of it. Cute girl** supports him to the point of being his de facto wife (and somehow she is the perfect *Japanese* wife despite being from another world and clearly more English, if anything). Actually a very lot of things go his way with no effort, as though contrived to make his life much easier this time around, including the whole harem thing.

The things that bother me that make me want to drop the rating, despite the author's claim that this is the "perfect" isekai story, since it was scored #1 for some competition or other—though I feel like this just lends credence to the fact that it's the most perfectly TRASH isekai, except that I know there are absolutely worse ones:

- The fact of LITERALLY EVERY RAW MATERIAL must be farmed from a dungeon rather than, say, grown or mined like in "normal" worlds makes their world particularly unbelievable. How exactly did the first people even get food?? If dungeons were the only places to get anything edible... did people COME from dungeons?? (I mean, I guess Ryota did, so...???) Or is this a case of people having no creation story, because what came long before is irrelevant to now?

- The fact of any particular dungeon having only one type of item per level means their world has a severe lack of variety of items, which bothers me PARTICULARLY since *flowers* are one such item that must be farmed. I have specific reason to be concerned about biodiversity even in fiction, after all.

- The fact of item drops reverting to the monsters they spawned from if they're far enough removed from human presence is rather shortsighted as a worldbuilding element. It means that LITERALLY NOTHING can be "abandoned" for too long. Nice bouquet? Don't leave the house empty, or you'll come back to a bunch of giant rocks with faces.***

- The above fact making it so killing a giant gorilla outside of its dungeon spawns a is so stupid I can't even. This really is the Persona 4 Adachi "" fantasy.

- The weird contrivance of the princess's party going to the "no item" dungeon to farm AIR, which is boxed for collectors who want specialty air specifically from the princess...? Huh?? I feel like there could've been a much more believable way to introduce the special "proof of who farmed the item drop" boxes than this.

- Nothing really goes WRONG for Ryota, does it? Is that's why it's the "perfect" isekai? I mean, . FOR FREE. Rinse and repeat, things are just a string of "Hey, I just happened to have or be able to do exactly what you need!" At least good on him being a decent enough person to rescue people even when it's "not profitable" to do it, but I wanted him to face a bigger setback than "." (I also wanted him to buy/find/make a proper replacement weapon for just such occasions, but I guess this IS only book 1.)

- I tag LGBTQ+, but sadly—while the characters don't seem to be particularly homophobic overall (but then, only a handful of characters made it relevant)—Ryota acted particularly homophobic at above and beyond what's really acceptable behaviour. I mean, sure, the guy was being sort of a creep from the instant he introduced himself to Ryota, but Ryota went a few steps farther than anyone secure in their sexuality should really be. (Like, I would treat any unwanted advances from ANYONE exactly the same way—"No, thanks, I'm happily married."—and only escalate if the other person doesn't take no for an answer, which was not the case here.)

So, what's good about it?

+ Reward fantasy (who DOESN'T have those?)
+ Actually a fast read
+ ...dunno

I guess if you like the anime, you'll like the long-form version of it (this light novel), although the art is noticeably rougher than even the anime (which I thought would have "prettied" Ryota up a bit as per the usual way of animated shows). I'll definitely pass, personally.

*I went back after the first draft of this review and saw I did NOT in fact make it through the first episode (though I have now), probably since my spouse stopped watching in the middle for unrelated reasons and I didn't see a point in resuming the episode.

**I say this mostly because I can't really tell if she's "legitimately" cute or just "not aggressively ugly," since Ryota also has Male Protagonist Blinders on and cannot recognise when a girl (like Erza) is hitting on him.

Actually, why do the girls all have names that start with E? Emily, Eve, Erza... that's confusing.

***The one monster Emily ended up specialising at defeating, which drops flowers, of all things.

A very lonely man who works at a black company becomes loot for a girl in a dungeon after she defeats a slime. He quickly works out he can earn a lot of money from killing monsters and selling the loot.

It as a book has a goofy fun idea, that everything that exists is just loot from dungeons, and it runs with that. This is also one of those game system worlds as well, so ofc, it has a leveling system. So if such things are satisfying to you as a reader, it does have that.

Getting deeper into it, the writing is very rough. The book is written mostly in past tense, so it feels like a summary at times. It spends very little time painting a scene and is mostly just dialog. Some parts have multiple rows of people just talking with nothing breaking it up.

Everyone sounds the same to me when they talk. They don't end up leave any massive impressions. We have a main character who wants to earn money and gain stats. Who is so lonely and over worked he starts to cry when someone cooks for him. An main girl who sleeps on the ground, but will clean and cook if you offer her a place to sleep. A bunny girl who who keeps finding the main character because she wants his carrot(s). And yes, that joke is made in the book as well.

For LGBTQ+ readers; the book has a "I'm not gay" moment I think they wanted to be funny, but it fell flat for me and instead just felt vaguely homophobic.

In the afterword's the author calls their story "perfect" and starts talking about an award they won and I cant help but find that kind of questionable as well...

I have a hard time recommending this. It was not for me at all

Another reincarnation novel. This publisher was good at picking novels, but sadly the English translation just only begun so many of the novels still in the first volume.
It's a story where the main character can't level up, but the drop rate was very high so he could get an item to upgrade his stats even though still at first level.

Garbage cookie--cutter isekai slop. The writer is an amateur, and the MC gets a gun after a few chapters anyway. The worldbuilding also doesn't make sense. It's a world where everything (literally everything) depends on defeating enemies in dungeons to harvest their drops. I hope the writer is young, because if a grown man wrote this, it's just embarrassing.

An easy to read light novel. I loved how kind he was helping people and how after suffering so much in his previous life things are finally going his way. The homophobic, over the top freak outs with another character were completely unnecessary to the plot. They were supposed to be funny, instead they were offensive.

Amazing

I really enjoyed the volume. So much difference between the anime and the novel. I like how more in depth the novel goes. Also b how much more comedy is in the novel.

In all honesty I thought the title was really stupid and that I would not enjoy this one. Well to my suprise I was really enterained when I read this. I even started the anime but had a hard time to explain the girl in a bunny suit to my boyfriend.
