I honestly don't know what to make of this. I absolutely loathed the first part - for various reasons it made me furious. The short middle part was good, and the last part was, tbh, freaking amazing. However, all in all and especially taken together with volume one, the last story didn't feel like it belonged with the rest.
My main quibble is that to me it’s like she couldn't decide whether she wanted to write BL or a “serious“ novel. Why does she have to decide? There are shortcuts I will let slide in BL which I find unwilling to forgive in “serious“ novels, and to me it feels like she had to take some of those in order to make it work. The entire events and characters of these novels seem too much and implausible. I mean it when I say that the last part feels like a different novel - if the entire work had been like that I would have liked it a lot better.
I just am not sure what she wanted to accomplish here. I am aware that other authors I like do things similar to her, but always in a way that works for me. Ultimately I don't think she's a bad author- I actually think she's a good author - but just not for me.
The underlying sexism really pisses me off, though.
