Imogen Gray #5

Immortal Death

Rate this book
Imogen is on the brink of getting everything she ever wanted: love, safety, answers. Her father. Mortality.

And just like that, a stranger comes to town and rips everything apart. Turns out, the darkest thing Imogen's ever had to face isn't a blood witch, or a vampire, or even a demon.

It's a mundane, petty human woman.

It's just like they say: Be careful what you wish for. Because sometimes, you'll get it.

The last book of the series! All questions will be answered, all riddles solved. Don't worry, no one dies (no one that doesn't deserve it, anyway) and there's a happy ending, I promise.

The turd in an otherwise great series. I really enjoyed the Immortal series, and I love Imogen Gray, she was a great character until Book 5. The series could have tidily been resolved in Book 4, instead a fifth was added.

The first 30% of the book Imogen acts totally out of character, she's ridiculous. I decided it was due to her emerging powers. The next 40% Imogen is running back and forth between DC and the valley, continually recapping earlier parts of the book while sort of looking for Leroy. So...

1. Imogen goes crazy, drunk on her new powers.
2. Leroy is missing, and the search for him requires Imogen, Rafael and two vampire swat teams to take many helicopter rides between DC and the valley.
3. The Ancient is tearing the world apart. No one cares.

That's about it for the first 70%. Then the identity of the father is confirmed, and the Ancient is explained. Considering the Ancient was a focal point from the start of the series, I think the entire book should have focused on Imogen, Daddy, and the Ancient, with a much better explanation to the events that had carried on for millennia.

Instead, the whole book is shrouded in Imogen's crazy and a really weak kidnapping plot surrounding Leroy. A couple of times we were about to be given nuggets of information, but those times were cut off in odd ways to keep the (lack of) mystery flowing.

Ancient is about the destroy the world, Daddy is about to reveal the secret to fixing the problem, but he's cut off. So instead of getting Dad back into the zone so he can stop the Ancient from tearing apart the world, Imogen jumps on a helicopter and flies to DC again.

Then there's the super weird bit where all Imogen's friends suddenly tell her they have been trying to reveal the identity of her father for a year, but she refused to listen. Uhm, make her listen? She could have had a WHOLE YEAR with her father, spending time with him, helping him to remember his past life, learning about the Ancient and her mother. But no. Instead we're expected to believe that in a year no one could get Imogen to shut up long enough to tell her who her father was.

All of the FBI stuff was a jumbled mess, and Brandon sitting in the town square through an entire novel. Poor kid, and all to be harassed by a golden pedophile at the end.

Book 1: 4 Stars (slow but interesting)
Book 2: 5 Stars (characters and story line were engaging)
Book 3: 3.5 Stars (side plots were not interesting)
Book 4: 5 Stars (was so looking forward to the wrap-up, and Imogen really shined)
Book 5: 1 Star

Overall Series: 3.75

This really was such an enjoyable series and I pretty much read this in one sitting as the stakes were high and I needed to know how it all ended.

I referred to these books as popcorn books, which I don't mean in a derogatory way, but they are just so quick to read. They knag to be fast paced and engaging with very loveable characters. I think if you go into it not expecting too much depth then it is impossible not to enjoy them.

I'm now going to read the next series in this world!

A gr friend recently told me that she liked the first three books (#1 - #3) of the series better than the last two (#4 & #5).

After finishing the series I agree with her. Overall I liked the series and the last two books were still fun. I enjoyed reading all of them. I'm just down rating the fifth book with half a star.

Disclaimer - this is a review from an advanced review copy I was given. It is 100% my honest opinion.

What a discovery Lauretta Hignett has been. Coming across Immortal, the first book in the Imogen Grey series, I devoured it. It had everything I look for in a series - great characters with depths and believable motives; fantastic settings; a supporting cast that made the world come alive; and a writing style that is both fluid and downright hilarious. I fell in love with the people she presented me with, and I wanted to see where it all ended for them.

Well, the answer is here, the last book in this series (for now at least). It's wonderful, continuing with all the same brilliant points I mentioned above, and bringing it together to answer some burning questions that have been demanding answers since the first book, as well as drawing it all together into the perfect conclusion.

This series has been the best discovery for me this year by far, and I cannot tell you how much I'm looking forward to reading more from the author. Do yourself a favour, and go and read this immediately. Five stars - I'd give it fifty if I could.

I was disappointed and this is more of a two and a half stars rating rather than three, and only because the premise was interesting enough for me to follow through the five books though I skimmed most of the later four books:
Also pls beware of potential spoilers.
I will be the first to say that the story held immense potential, we are faced with an entity who is 250-300,000 years old. But she doesn’t know what she is. This right here creates the ground work for the most disappointing element of the book because we never see her reach her full potential in the story (and when she is repeatedly transformed into a more vulnerable state it feels like a regression rather than an evolution because of this very exact reason that she never realises all-or hardly any of what-she’s capable of). And it’s even more intriguing when we get glimpses of what she might be, SPOILER: a star!
At her stunted, half-existence, since she’s forced to hide all that she is, her strength’s sort of matched with that of a regular vampire in terms of power and speed, cue enter stage, the male pratogonist, the Vampire King. Except that he’s technically not the king yet, and he’s not ruthless or cunning, he’s more of a procastinator who’s the king of delaying tactics (his solution for the whole kingship problem which will bite him in the ass in book four) and puppy rescuer and businessman. On paper a vampire king could potentially be the perfect foil for such a heroine, but this one is a white-washed, goody two-shoes parody. So we’re always left with the impression that she’s dumbing herself down in every aspect to match her vampire king. Again another disappointing step down and to the back.
And then their relationship which after book one quickly delves into a boring crawl at odds with the fast pace of the story. The pacing was another problem, usually I love fast pacing in a story line, but here it didn’t quite match the energy of the story and all that it was trying to unpack.
But the worst thing in the book is the very shallow explanation we’re given for the problem the heroine’s been trying to solve for the past 300,000 years, and which is the driving force, the entire catalyst if you will, behind the whole plot. It turns out that the ancient creature who descends on this plane and does his best to annihilate her whenever she even displays a hint of her powers, is none other than a grieving uncle who is labouring under the illusion that somehow the humans dragged his beloved brother down and consumed his powers. Therefore he gets into black rages whenever a ping of star power hits his radar through millennia and he does his best to punish the perpetrator. She finds this out by accident. After 250-300 thousand years. Turns out the brother just upped and descended down one day without letting anyone know, and gradually became human and died within the heroine’s first two decades on earth. Flimsy excuse, stupid explanation and shoddy execution.
There are so many more narrative holes and unsatisfying loose ends that I can ply you with. But my rant’s become too long as it is. And more to the point I’m feeling slightly better now that I’ve gotten this much off my chest.

Things definitely come to a nice ending in this book.
It starts out with lots of trouble though – the ancient being is trapped in the pocket dimension, looking for someone that Imogen has no idea about. He is causing massive damage to Emerald Valley due to tremors.
Then Leroy is kidnapped, the search for him crosses the country with several different adversaries.
And she’s still looking for her father, (I wasn’t surprised at the reveal).
There is a lot of action, humour, the usual great characters.
It’s amazing how Imogen has grown from an immortal person who doesn’t really care for anyone to someone with several friends that are now family.
This is a nice, quick, easy reading, enjoyable series.
I will be continuing my enjoyment of Lauretta Hignett’s book with her next series -

Solid ending to the series. The plot lines are all tidied nicely and the HEAs are satisfying enough. Written well for fluffy fantasy and has been a really engaging read.

Cute Ending

*****Spoilers*****

Cute ending I thought for Imogen. In this book, they trap the ancient being that has been tearing her to pieces but get no answers as to why. Meanwhile, while that being is in the pocket dimension, he's destroying the earth and causing quakes that if he doesn't stop will doom them all. Toss in Leroy being kidnapped, which we learn is the FBI taking him back to his mother, and Imogen and friends have plenty to deal with. Especially since Leroy's presence is required to free the Ancient. Most of the book is trying to find Leroy with some interpersonal stuff thrown in a long with a misogynistic group siphoning power from other beings. They target Rafael but thankfully he and Imogen are able to escape with the help of the woman possessed by a being (can't remember the name called in the book) whose husband wasn't helping in their relationship. It's also probably the biggest whole left unanswered, in terms of who would deal with Seth and his followers. Turns out I was right, the VET Jamieson or however his name is spelled is Imogen's father reincarnated and was an angel. Surprisingly, the Ancient, aka Saman, is Imogen's uncle and her father Sariel. Sariel fell and Saman could feel his brother's essence in Imogen so would come and tear her to pieces when she used her powers. The imprinting Brandon had to Imogen I think perhaps shifted to Saman but it's unexplained other than that Saman has been staring at him for several days. Imogen is able to shed her angel half and becomes human, just in time for her to be changed into a vampire as she lays dying from a gunshot wound. Leroy's mom was the one who pulled the trigger which was unexpected but also not believable from my perspective. Yes Leroy had applied to be emancipated and ended up going to court to testify against his mom selling him, but violence against others I felt was a stretch from what we knew about Leroy's mom up to that point. I didn't quite buy that Imogen was able to transition to being fully human. I'd think with her already being part human, the same wouldn't necessarily work for her to remove the divine. Imogen and Rafael finally get their wedding and the world continues to turn.

Anyway, a good series overall, it was quick so didn't need to be 5 books though some things could've been stretched more and more information offered.

Final book in an action pack urban fantasy adventure series

This is book 5 in the final book in action packed urban fantasy adventure series. Great cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. An immortal woman with certain powers of extraordinary strength speed and agility. At times of great peril she has the ability to draw on even stronger powers but she tries to resist this because when she uses this and ancient being comes to a portal on earth and destroys her. However she cannot be destroyed from those pieces left over no matter how she’s destroyed she will regenerate and continue living. She has lived for 250 years. She’s search of her father who was just like her until transformed into a human passed away and has been reincarnated many times over the centuries. She has found him in multiple occasions but usually in his life and does not have enough time with him for one reason or another to get all the answers she needs. Once again she is on a quest to find her father’s reincarnation in this generation. She is fighting against witches and other evils and including human traffickers and just outright plain people that are evil. No spoilers they must start book one if you have not read any of them. If you read the other four books then you know what’s going on and this is the conclusion. Read and see if she finally find her father if she can stop the ancient from destroying her if she will find her answers as well as all the other answers that you have discovered in the previous four books. Enjoy. The only sad thing is that this is a end.

I realized I had not written a review yet for this final book in the series when I finished and reviewed another book. Oddly enough the other book, Inked by Rachel Rener, had something similar in their book that bothered me here.

Why don’t I know more about Rafael or vampires in general in how they eat? It bothered me in this last book that Rafael mentioned how he loved human women when Imogen became human, and it was definitely referenced in a way that made it clear he meant for feeding and also seemed like he meant it sexually, which, to me, should have caused Imogen to have even more insecurities about not being good enough for Rafael. We got zero clarification or description of why it was different than Imogen’s immortal being, and then what happened after her final transition? What then? How do Imogen or Rafael eat? How do those acts compare in each stage? Maybe that was the point, it was HER he loved, and I got that to some extent. I just feel like spending some time on that rather than abruptly ending was so frustrating. We got beat over the head about how Imogen felt unworthy and she wasn’t very smart throughout the series, but we never once learned about how vampires obtained their food. Not only that, we never heard about any of Rafael’s past loves, not explanation of what he had be through over the hundreds of years he had been a vampire to understand what it was about Imogen that finally made him want a mate. I don’t know, their bond was also not touched upon very well at all. While I commend the author touching on grief and abandonment, I needed more to explain how these people who are so old finally stumble across one another.

I felt like the ending was rushed and anticlimactic in some ways. While I applaud how we got Imogen exactly what she wanted, just not how she originally envisioned, she got there and it was much more fulfilling than she could have ever hoped. I really enjoyed that part. What was frustrating was how The Ancient played out. Oooppss! My bad. That’s it? Really? So he’s chased her for over 200,000 years and ripped her to shreds countless times and all we got was essentially a “my bad”!!!!!!

I didn't like the book, and it as the last in the series left a lot to be desired.

Imogen was all over the place, completely impulsive and the author kind of hinted that it was because of her powers, but to me that's no excuse at all. She almost killed someone important and that was kind of left on the sidelines, no serious conversations took place afterwards.

I actually felt that way throughout the book, like it was all a joke because of the characters' behavior.

Leroy's story could very well have been in another book to be better developed. The author put this narrative together, with that of Rafael and more of the Anciente in 200 pages, which caused that none of them turned out well.

The Ancient was the "villain" throughout all the books, and the ending was in less than 10 pages and would have been resolved with just a very simple conversation with her father in the first book. It doesn't make sense to me for everyone to say they knew who her father was and that she never listened.

Anyway, Imogen was a character without any charisma in this book for me, too immature and without any consideration for many people she says are important. Thankfully, this book is the last in the series.

OMG! This series is amazing!

I don’t think I’ve slept for that past week! I was completely enthralled with this series! The story is perfection!
The main character is the perfect combination of a badass warrior with a gives no shits about what anybody thinks attitude, but also has the biggest heart! Her interactions with others are beyond hilarious. All the characters are wonderfully written (Father Benson is a favorite).
Imogen has lived for thousands of years, living and dying in so many ways, just trying to find out who and what she is. She finally finds a place where she may finally find the answers. There is so much more! Settling into a town trying to hide what she is, while trying to help take care of various mythical critters that come to this plane. With the help of an aging priest who wants to exercise all the demons coming to take over the world. I don’t have the words to adequately describe this story or the talent of the writer. I highly advise everyone to read it. Absolutely amazing! If you like KF Breene, Deborah Dunbar and Shannon Mayer, you’re gonna love Lauretta Hignett!!!

I loved it!

Warning: Occasional coarse language, sexual references and drug references. No explicit sex scenes. Content note for suicidal thoughts.

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. This is Book Five (The Final Chapter) of The Imogen series. This is a fun, fierce and fast-paced Urban Fantasy Series. A slow-burn romance, it includes a diverse cast of characters, shifters, witches, fae, cryptids and more.

Imogen is on the brink of getting everything she ever wanted, love, safety, answers, her father, and mortality; and just like that, a stranger comes to town and rips everything apart. Turns out, the darkest thing Imogen's ever had to face isn't a blood witch, or a vampire, or even a demon, it's a mundane, petty human woman. It's just like they say, be careful what you wish for, because sometimes, you'll get it. So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone.

For as long as Imogen understand her existence she has always been hunted by a benevolent force when she exposes her true nature. For almost as long Imogen craved the peace and rest that a true death would give her. Until now, she changing.. evolving. She has people and a home she doesn’t want to run from but fight for. Finally when a fairy tale ending is on her horizon her tormentor shows up threatening everything she loves. I would recommend this series it’s hilarious, touching and semi sexy. I do love that it really doesn’t take itself so seriously. Imogen is strong, funny, loving and street smart. I love how she has these truly deep unique connection with each one of her “people”. My favorite part of this story is Leroy having the chance to confront his abuser. That Father Benson wasn’t really like his teacher, I was touched when he apologized (maybe spoiler). I would admit that I was hopping he was who Imogen was looking for. And yes I was a bit surprised when she finally opened her eyes and realized just whom she was seeking out.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

OMG!

What an amazing resolution to this long, intensely beautiful, endlessly gripping, compelling story…

The story of Im was my first experience of Lauretta Hignett’s talent, and I feel very lucky to have picked up the initial book that began my absolute love affair with the characters and worlds of this tale. Frankly, it’s been an epic journey! (I’m having to be so careful not to overwhelm with the all the superlatives that instantly and constantly come so readily to mind as I discuss this series .)

The stories in this works by Hignett have been completely wonderful to immerse myself in, and if you’re checking out this review to decide whether or not to take on this incredible tale, I envy you the experience of reading this collection for the first time.

I look forward to discovering if other work by this author matches this amazingly high standard.

I am replete.

Why are my eyes leaking?

Okay. So this one has me all up in my feels. I had figired out some stuff along the way, and yet it still shocked me.

I dont even know what to say about this one. Im still leaking from my eyes and blowing my nose as I write this. There was so much that happened in this book, and so many emotions.

It will take me a few days to get my mind fully wrapped around everything. The book hangover will be a bitch.

Speaking of... I actually swore out loud at you. That was pure evil. Like... I was already sobbing, and then the knife twisted and I sobbed harder.

Only the best authors are able to envoke so many intense feelings out of their readers. I've been super lucky to have read a few of them lately- but this is the first one in a while that made me say fu out loud lol.

Please dont stop writing. Keep going with Sandy. Maybe pop in now and again with an Imogen cameo. Just keep writing and sharing your worlds with us.

Best series

I fell in love with this series of books from the first irreverent, sarcastic, hilarious page. Imogen was trying so hard to die after 300,000 years of being torn apart and slowly healing, never falling in love, never staying in the same place very long. She always saved others yet thought she was a horrible abomination. Her life basically sucked, the constant fear of torture and pain keeping her running. Then she saves an abused boy and decides to keep him around. Then she helps and is helped by a sweet witch and her werebear wife. The people continue to come into her life to defend her and be defended by Imogen. Creatures from other dimensions fall into the town and I fell in love with them, especially the little salamander that is so hot he could destroy the town but is charmed by Imogen so does nothing but help. I was sad when I read the last page, no more fabulous book...

Immortal Death (Imogen Grey series book 5) by Lauretta Hignett is a 5 ⭐️ read.
I’ve been waiting on this books release but also dreading it as it’s the last book in the series 😢
Imogen is still looking for the latest reincarnation of her father to show up so she can get the answers she’s been waiting over 250 thousand years for, how she can finally die, but as usual everything else in her life is going out of control, the ancient who has been chasing her is caught and she can finally get some answers but they’re just as confusing as everything else in her life.
This whole series has been amazing, the author has built a world that drags you in and makes you want more, this is a perfect ending to the series and I shed a few more tears. I know there will be a re-read of this series in my future.
This was my 100th book read of the year!!

A disappointing end to a great series

I don't know what happened with this book. And I've read the Imogen series over the last handful of days.

Imogen suddenly sucks, real bad. Zero insight into her behaviors, zero accountability, totally single minded, until she hits the next thing, then everything else ceases to exist until the next thing. I do appreciate many of the character lines getting closure.

But honestly? I'm just SUPER disappointed. Out of the four series I've read from this author, this is far and away the most awful book. It felt jittery and abrupt and rushed...they closed all the story lines in the last...20, maybe 30 pages. The characters lost all their depth, and nobody had a good idea unless Imogen suggested it, but she was so shortsighted...

I can't even. I hope you enjoy this one more than I did.

I loved every single book!

I couldn't put this series of books down each one brilliant in its own unique way. Imogen the kickass heroine, Raphael her vampire king, Leroy the boy she saved from his awful mother and father Benson the crazy lovable demon hunting priest and every other character who were so brilliantly written. The interaction between them all so totally believable, funny bits that had me laughing the sections that made me year up. This series has something for everyone. The highest possible praise I can give this series is that I would definitely read it again!!!!

Holy crap, this was great!

I ripped through this book like it was tissue paper. Since I had read the Foils and Fury series with Sandy and Mavka (oops! I should have read Imogen’s first!), I knew bits of what was going to happen, but the actual telling of it was amazing! I found myself rereading bits a few times and highlighting some passages, either because they were profound or they amused me greatly.

Now that I’m through with Imogen’s series and have already read Sandy’s, I’m jumping straight into Prue’s, Blood and Magic. Can’t wait to see what this author has in store for Prue!

Well, this was a disappointment. Out of the blue, Imogen became a hysterical person, one moment raging, the next sobbing. The story was similarly all over the place, and the parts where everybody was telling her that they knew who her father was and were trying to tell her for a year were completely ridiculous and untrue. We learn the her father was an angel, which was quite clear from the previous book about demons. The only surprise was her being turned to a vampire because she finally turned to a human and was shot by Leroy's mother... and this part was again out of blue... This was probably one of the worst ending to a series I have read.

Awesome

Sorry I have not reviewed each book individually but I have devoured th series in a week. It is always a risk starting a new series as there is some in my opinion, some true duds out there. This isn't one. As you promised, all the mysteries were solved. You nearly had me with 'the end', the kindle nearly went out of the window! A truly individual series that struck a chord with me. Loved Imogen, Rafe and Leroy along with the other characters such as Benson and Jaimison. Thank you for an awesome series and I look forward to your future releases.

What happened???
This book was an absolute mess. The character development took a sharp turn for the worse, the characters themselves were out of character, the plot jumped all over the place without any reason and so many parts of that felt completely unnecessary. I really enjoyed the first four books but this book felt like when they try to drag a movie series on just one movie too long. I made it through the first four and I can’t bother to finish the series because of how much I disliked this read. Disappointing ending.

The last two books of the series were an improvement over the first three. This one tied up all the loose ends quite nicely. I especially loved everyone’s reactions toward the official discovery of Imogen’s dad. Because it was definitely what most readers were thinking.

This was fast paced and jam packed with action for such a short book. I think that some of the plot was a bit scattered, and I still prefer her spin-off series about Sandy more. However, I think this series has a better final book.

I feel as though when it came to the ending, it was "getting married. Uncle decided to stay. The end." No explaining the connection between the angel and wolf, no getting ready for the wedding, and i know she's pissed about going through that pain everything, and yet there was no 'this is what you did to me when you killed me every single time' there was only "oops my bad" like there should've been more! I keep wondering if there's supposed to be another book because it was kinda B.S. with how this book ended.

a very satisfying conclusion to a wonderful series

I devoured this series reading a book a day. I absolutely loved them. I’d stumbled on the Bones series first and then had to backtrack to this one-now I need to read Sandy’s story. I recommend these books to anyone in need of a sweet escape from reality without tons of swearing or spicy moments (this was the spiciest of all the series so far and it was fairly tame). I really enjoyed them and will add them to the list of books I read yearly.

Masterful conclusion to a great series

Imogen still struggles with her feelings as the son of her heart Leroy disappears.

She has much to overcome as Father Benson's life is celebrated and everything changes around her while danger and the ancient stalk her.

Something has to give, and her heart may be the target.

In some ways, the outcome is predictable as everyone around her already knew some things. To her the biggest surprises are the happiest.

A very nice conclusion and re-meeting of old characters good and bad.
