The turd in an otherwise great series. I really enjoyed the Immortal series, and I love Imogen Gray, she was a great character until Book 5. The series could have tidily been resolved in Book 4, instead a fifth was added.
The first 30% of the book Imogen acts totally out of character, she's ridiculous. I decided it was due to her emerging powers. The next 40% Imogen is running back and forth between DC and the valley, continually recapping earlier parts of the book while sort of looking for Leroy. So...
1. Imogen goes crazy, drunk on her new powers.
2. Leroy is missing, and the search for him requires Imogen, Rafael and two vampire swat teams to take many helicopter rides between DC and the valley.
3. The Ancient is tearing the world apart. No one cares.
That's about it for the first 70%. Then the identity of the father is confirmed, and the Ancient is explained. Considering the Ancient was a focal point from the start of the series, I think the entire book should have focused on Imogen, Daddy, and the Ancient, with a much better explanation to the events that had carried on for millennia.
Instead, the whole book is shrouded in Imogen's crazy and a really weak kidnapping plot surrounding Leroy. A couple of times we were about to be given nuggets of information, but those times were cut off in odd ways to keep the (lack of) mystery flowing.
Ancient is about the destroy the world, Daddy is about to reveal the secret to fixing the problem, but he's cut off. So instead of getting Dad back into the zone so he can stop the Ancient from tearing apart the world, Imogen jumps on a helicopter and flies to DC again.
Then there's the super weird bit where all Imogen's friends suddenly tell her they have been trying to reveal the identity of her father for a year, but she refused to listen. Uhm, make her listen? She could have had a WHOLE YEAR with her father, spending time with him, helping him to remember his past life, learning about the Ancient and her mother. But no. Instead we're expected to believe that in a year no one could get Imogen to shut up long enough to tell her who her father was.
All of the FBI stuff was a jumbled mess, and Brandon sitting in the town square through an entire novel. Poor kid, and all to be harassed by a golden pedophile at the end.
Book 1: 4 Stars (slow but interesting)
Book 2: 5 Stars (characters and story line were engaging)
Book 3: 3.5 Stars (side plots were not interesting)
Book 4: 5 Stars (was so looking forward to the wrap-up, and Imogen really shined)
Book 5: 1 Star
Overall Series: 3.75
