I can't help be amazed at the gifts God has delighted me with - a wonderful husband, four amazing children, and the opportunity to write for Him.
I've been writing as long as I can remember - I won my first book writing contest in first grade! Over the years, writing has become, for me, a way to praise God and see Him at work in my life.
Although I have a degree in Mass Communications from the University of MN, my real writing experience started when I penned the The Warren Report - a bi-monthly newsletter that detailed our ministry highlights.
Living in Russia meant I never lacked for great material - and those experiences naturally spilled out first into devotionals and magazine articles and finally into my first published story, "Measure of a Man," in the Tyndale/HeartQuest, Chance Encounters of the Heart anthology.
Susan and husbandI grew up in Wayzata, a suburb of Minneapolis, and became an avid camper from an early age. My favorite fir-lined spot is the north shore of Minnesota - it's where I met my husband, honeymooned and dreamed of living. The north woods easily became the foundation for my first series, The Deep Haven series.based on a little tourist town along the shores of Lake Superior. I have to admit - I'm terribly jealous of Mona, the heroine of my first full-length book, Happily Ever After, a Christy Award Finalist published in 2004 with Tyndale/Heartquest.
Our family moved home from the mission field in June 2004 -- and now we live in the beautiful town I'd always dreamed of! God has amazed me anew with His provision, and blessings -- and allowed me a season when I can write full time for Him.
I 'm delighted you've stopped in to visit. My hope is that you'll be blessed and encouraged by soul-stirring stories of regular people interacting with a God who loves them.
I'd love to hear from you! I love getting mail, especially from readers and I welcome your questions and comments. Write to me at susan@susanmaywarren.com. Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher via JustRead Publicity Tours. Opinions expressed are my own. Note: This book is part of an anthology, and the first fiction anthology that I have reviewed. For that reason, this review will look a little bit different than usual. I’m going to start with general notes for the collection as a whole, then do some additional story-specific commentary.
What I Liked Once Upon a Winter Wonderland is an anthology, which is a format I don’t usually read. Based on my understanding of anthologies, I was expecting a collection of short stories or novellas, each set at Christmastime and in the same community (since the title said “Deep Haven”). I was unprepared for, but delighted with, the discovery that the stories are actually closely connected to each other, down to some overlapping interactions that we see happening across more than one stories.
In addition to enjoying the overlap, as a reader, it’s fun to think about how the authors needed to put their heads together to create continuity across the stories. For example, there’s a moment in a coffee shop that we see in the second and fourth stories but reversing the perspectives so that the “stranger” from one story is the main character in another. Although this is my first exposure to Deep Haven, I was able to enjoy making connections as I read the stories, and it was intriguing to see how one character played into another character’s story and how lives overlapped (even with those characters who didn’t get their own novellas).
Scripture Connection The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.
Isaiah 9:2 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
Matt. 1:23 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 14:27 Spiritual Content I ended up being very pleased with the Christmas content– and not just the holiday ambiance, which I was expecting to enjoy. In fairness, there were more than one stories where characters “fell in love” ridiculously quickly. However (and this is a big however), I was really impressed with the depth of the spiritual content in each story. Even on those implausible reads, those moments of revelation and insight not only helped to ground a story, but really granted me a connection point. I found these moments to be insightful, relevant, and truly uncovering the heart of Christmas: not only focusing on the Nativity scene, but really embracing the implications, for mankind, of Jesus’ coming to earth. And that is exactly what Christmas is all about. It’s also the reason I’m giving the collection a five star rating. This is something I waffled on, because of the shallowness (or at least the astounding speed) of some of the romances, but the pointing to Jesus… that solidifies the rating for me.
Content Notes (Mild Spoilers)
The last story focuses on a married couple that has been married for several decades. In this story, there’s the implication that they are going to enjoy their freedom as man and wife, at the end, though we don’t “see” it happen. There’s also a thread, throughout, about the wife hoping that a bit of romance will help to restore her relationship with her husband (though there’s nothing graphic).
Story-Specific Comments A Beautiful Sight While reading the first story in the collection, I decided it would probably be my favorite. I strongly related to Vivien. Although I’ve never planned a wedding, the character felt so real to me as she rushed around, trying to be in control of the situation. That desire for control is what really resonated with me, somehow more deeply than with other characters I have read with the same tendency. It may have been because of all the details associated with wedding-planning. It also may have been how deeply I felt her anxiety regarding being left alone, in marriage. Because I deeply commiserated with the character, the moment of resolution was all the more poignant.
I do think I also enjoyed this story because the plot centered around an existing romantic couple, rather than people who had just met.
We’re Happy Tonight This is the story where we first meet Gerald, who was one of my favorite characters, throughout the novella. Although Gerald does not get his own story, he is a very sweet and lovable elderly gentleman. I was excited to see him reappear, later on. I also really wanted to drink hot chocolate, because of this story.
I thought Zuri was a sweetheart, though Duke annoyed me. My favorite part was definitely the reminder of the reason for the season. Sass Aleckson’s description was a beautiful encapsulation of why He came.
The Snow is Glistening As in the second novella, the main characters are meeting for the first time, at the beginning of the story. Warren grapples with the idea of trust, as the protagonists question who is worthy of our trust. I appreciated the statement that no person is completely safe/trustworthy, because the truth is that we are all sinful. Jesus is the One we are completely safe with.
I also felt that the romance was fairly believable, in spite of its short duration, because of how the author handled one part, in particular (I won’t spoil by specifying).
And I liked this quote: “Nothing is a disaster with the Lord” (p. 267).
As with the other stories, the message of Christmas comes through beautifully!
Sleigh Bells Ring I really liked how this story flowed from the previous one. It was neat to shift from Stella’s perspective to her parents’. I found it impressive that the authors did such a great job of filling in details, and omitting details, between the two stories.
I considered Marilyn to be quite likable and I sympathized with her as she was thwarted in her various efforts to reconnect with her husband. It was also fun to read about her ideas for reconnecting with him (like cooking a romantic meal or going on a sleigh ride).
And again, that Christmas message. Simple, but meaningful!
Recommendation Status For the most part, the four novellas were light and cute, but what really commends them, to me, is their emphasis on the beautiful hope we have in Jesus, and what Christmas was all about. Light reader discretion advised due to the romantic content.
Once Upon A Winter Wonderland is a delightful collection of four novellas by four Christian authors. Each story deals with the same time period and setting but is told through different eyes. Each story perfectly complements the others. This is aa perfectly charming book to read in the run up to the festive season. A Beautiful Sight by Rachel D Russell shows how nerves can get the best of us in the lead up to our wedding. We all hope for the perfect wedding but a wedding is just one day, marriage is for a lifetime. We need to include God in our marriages. A cord of three strands is not easily broken. We need to give and receive forgiveness and remember to pray about all things. My favourite quote was: “Don’t let fear tear you away from the wonderful plans God has for you.” We’re Happy Tonight by Michelle Sass Aleckson is a delightful tale showing characters who overcome personal difficulties. “Scars are … our history.” Not all scars are visible. The ones we carry inside often weigh heavy and pull us down. We need to trust God with our lives. “God is … in the business of finding lost things.” We are reminded that God searches relentlessly for us when we are lost. My favourite quote was: “When so many out there criticize… you find a way to hope and encourage.” We all need to be encouragers today. The Snow Is Glistening by Susan May Warren shows the importance of trusting God. “God had me in His hand, even when life felt out of control.” There are times when life seems to make no sense at all but nothing comes as a surprise to God. He sees our ending from our beginning. We can trust Him to lead us. “Trusting God’s peace.” Even in the midst of storms, we can know God’s peace that passes understanding. We cannot always control what happens to us but we can choose our responses. If all around us seems chaotic, maybe we are in the middle of the storm but all will be well at the end because God is in in control. If its not all well, it’s not the end. We can trust God to guide us. Sleigh Bells Ring by Andrea Christenson is a delightful tale showing our faithful God. There are times in life when our lives seem to hit roadblocks. We feel alone, abandoned even by God. “Maybe it wasn’t that God had stopped talking, but that in all his busyness, [he] had stopped listening.” We are so busy doing things for God that we lose sight of God. God never leaves us to struggle alone. He walks beside us every step of the way. Sometimes when life overwhelms us, we shut everyone out, even God. We question everything but really “maybe he didn’t need answers. He just needed a Savior.” We are all in need of a Savior and His name is Jesus. I received a free copy from Just Read Tours for a blog tour. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
I was excited to find out about this collection of winter novellas set in the town of Deep Haven and I really enjoyed this collection. It is always a comfort to visit with the people of Deep Haven who has found their way into my heart.
This novella collection focused on Vivienne and Boone’s wedding, but from different POV’s which I really enjoyed. One of my favourite romance stories was Duke and Zuri. I enjoyed how her joy and cheerful outlook broke through his grumpiness.
If you enjoy cosy romance stories around Christmas time, then you should add this to your TBR.
*I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.*
A cute Christmas collection. Vivi and Boone are getting married but not without several disasters along the way. I liked how the wedding preparations played into the 4 novellas. Zuri and Duke's novella was my favorite but all are fun reads. A nice trip back to Deep Haven!
I am beyond excited to be reviewing one of the best holiday novels of 2022. Once Upon a Winter Wonderland will have you humming Walking in a Winter Wonderland while you read through one of the craziest lead ups to a Christmas wedding that I have ever heard!
Whatever could possibly go wrong with a wedding goes wrong in the days leading up to Boone and Vivien’s wedding, characters that were introduced in Then Came You, one of my favorites from the Deep Haven series, and Once Upon a Winter Wonderland is four unique stories focused on those in and around the chaos.
It felt good to be back in Deep Haven! This novel is full of characters, some I have had the pleasure of previously being introduced to, and others new to me, but everyone charming nonetheless. The length of each novella is perfect for a quick read, and I loved how seamlessly they each tied in with one another. There is a flow from one story to the next without any effort, and while being four separate novellas they are also formed into one cohesive narrative, which was perfection!
This was hands down one of the best holiday novels I’ve read this season, and could quite possibly end up being one of my favorites this season! It’s got drama without being overly dramatic, suspense, love, stepping out in faith, all with oodles of holiday goodness. It has such a unique charm and vibe that I just ate up and honestly, as far as holiday reads go, it can’t get much better than this!
*I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher through JustRead Tours. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own.
Four short and sweet deep haven Christmas stories.
Book 1. Vivien is not the person you'd think of when you think of the best heroine of a Deep Haven novel. In past novels, she has been... well, less than the ideal character. But..this story gave me a chance to get to know her, and see what really makes her tick. It was surprising! I found myself being endeared to Vivien, the longer I read. This was her wedding story (well...at least partially!), and it's a fun one!
Book 2. Luke's story. He's determined to be the best law enforcement officer he can possibly be. But somehow, things just seem to go wrong. This was a fun story, with some unexpected twists and turns.
Book 3. In this story you meet Romeo, the Christiansen's cousin. Romeo has been left behind at Deep Haven (while everyone else is off vacationing) to run the lodge. But is he up to the challenge? He's got Stella Brown to help him. What could possibly go wrong?
Book 4.And now, last, but not least. The story of Pastor Brown and his wife, who are vacationing at Deep Haven. With their daughter Stella (whose story was mostly told in book #3) This story is an intriguing, sweet romance about a couple who has been married for many years. It gives a look at what love means when you're in it for the long haul. Disclaimer: I receive complimentary books from various sources, including, publishers, publicists, authors, and/or NetGalley. Once Upon a Winter Wonderland is a fun collection of four novellas, set in Deep Haven, written by four different authors. The collection of stories focuses on a winter wedding for Vivienne and Boone, with each novella being written from a different point of view of different characters in the book. They all tie together to make such a fun story.
This book has it all…a stressed out bride, a nervous groom, a grinch, a Christmas loving “elf”, a married couple worried about their future, an elderly man who has trouble letting go of the past, a pair of strangers who become the best of friends, disasters, disappointments, and best of all, happy endings.
I was provided a copy of the book from the author/publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
The first novella was all about getting everything to be perfect for Vivien and Boone's wedding. But anything and everything that could go wrong did. With all the stress of making a perfect wedding happen at Christmas and even the weather causing so much stress, should the even be getting married? And that story line, in ways continues throughout the rest of the novellas. Boone's best man, Duke, needs to pick up Vivien's friend, Zuri. As best man he has promised to do all he can to make this day special for his friend. Even picking up the Christmas elf known as Zuri. Elf meets Grinch. It was going to be a long ride to the Evergreen Resort and the pending snow storm isn't helping. Romeo is feeling alone and abandoned. He has a lot on his plate since he is responsible for not only managing the Evergreen Resort while the Christiansens were stuck in FL but also keeping everything plowed at the resort and in town. But that doesn't stop him from helping the car that just got ran into a ditch by another car dangerously passing his plow. No one was hurt but the passenger in the back sure let him know how angry she was about the accident being his fault. Wasn't everything that went wrong his fault? So why in the world was she now helping him at the Resort? But was she helping really? Because right now with everything going wrong, again, it really didn't seem like it. Run off the road is not the best way to start a 2nd honeymoon. But then again, bringing along their adult daughter probably didn't help either. But what was he to do? Leave her by herself at Christmas? But his wife surely didn't appreciate the change in plans. Change in plans. That seems to be a thought stuck in his head. He was done. Done with being a pastor and done trying to talk to a God that was giving him the silent treatment.
I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy this collection or not. I haven’t read any of the Deep Haven collection before, but this collection can be a stand alone. It was fun reading about different characters all there for a wedding at Christmas time.
A Beautiful Sight Rachel D. Russell I was getting a little fed up with Vivien and her obsession over the “perfect” wedding. Boone was sweet and I felt sorry for the guy when Vivien was so fixated on her list. Once Vivien got straightened out, it was good.
We’re Happy Tonight Michelle Sass Aleckson This one made me chuckle a few times. Mr. Grumpy and Miss Sunshine were so opposite and yet perfect for each other. Yes, it was a romance, and yes there was some kissing.
The Snow is Glistening Susan May Warren I enjoyed this story. There was a really good message of God being with you even in hard times. There was a time a girl spent the night in a guy’s house but he was gone during the night and she needed a place to stay. And yes, there was some kissing. A little more descriptive than the other stories.
Sleigh Bells Ring Andrea Christenson This was my least favorite. I don’t really enjoy stories where couples just refuse to talk and imagine the worst things that could happen if they do talk instead of talking and working things out. This story also has someone joking and laughing about the pastor’s slip of the tongue when he mentions the Trinity. Didn’t care for that.
I fell in love with the tiny town of Deep Haven, MN when Susan May Warren first created it years ago. I've loved every trip back since, too. Susan May Warren, Rachel D Russel, Michelle Sass Aleckson, and Andrea Christenson take us back to Deep Haven with this series of novellas set at Christmas time. When it seems as if everything that could go wrong is definitely going wrong. However, God always steps in and works things out for the best, doesn't He? That's because He has the best plan for the lives of His children.
All these stories are connected to Boone and Vivien's wedding, whose story was in an earlier novel. So you must read them in order or you'll be lost. Even the prologue and epilogue are so good! This book was way better than a Hallmark movie ever 'though' of being! I am so serious. It was. I'm going to read it every year at Christmas.
This just made me so happy. I loved every single minute of it. These ladies have totally captured my heart here completely. Deep Haven is such a special place with equally special inhabitants and we meet up with a lot of them again here. The spiritual thread was very well done as well. I found myself with leaky eyes more than once and then just smiling widely at others. Absolute. Perfection. Well done!
Once Upon a Winter Wonderland is a sweet anthology set in snowy Minnesota, centering around the wedding of Boone and Vivien. Rachel D. Russell, Michelle Sass Aleckson, Susie May Warren, and Andrea Christianson each craft a tale unique to its own, yet also beautifully woven together with each other’s. In each story challenges abound. Nothing seems to go right. But the Lord is there, gently guiding each person through the lows to help them find the highs, and to help them find the person He has for each of them. I loved getting to know Boone, Vivien, and the rest of their friends, and the people of Deep Haven, Minnesota. Grab a steaming cup of coffee or cocoa and snuggle under a blanket with Once Upon a Winter Wonderland. You won’t want to get up until you are done! I received a complimentary copy of this book, but my opinion is entirely my own.
One Upon a Winter Wonderland is 4 novellas in 1 book all centering around Boone and Vivien’s wedding. Don’t know who they are? Me either, but that won’t matter once you get into this wonderfully crazy cup of hot cocoa on a blizzardy day story or rather stories. There is a tiny town in Minnesota called Deep Haven. I want to move there and stay forever. I fell in love with this tiny town. Seriously, I now need to read every previous books about Deep Haven. In these set of stories, it seems nothing is going right not even the weather. LOL. Of course, God will make it all for good in the end and even better than some of them imagined. These stories will have you all over the place. You will laugh and you will cry, in the end you will just smile and maybe even want to read it again. It’s a like a favorite hallmark Christmas movie, but even better. I’m now off to search for the earlier books. I just can’t shake Deep Haven. Like I said before I want to live there forever! I was given a copy of this book, but all opinions are my very own!
This inspirational contemporary romance, by Rachel D. Russell, Michelle Sass Aleckson, Andrea Christenson, and Susan May Warren, returns the reader to the tight-knit community of Deep Haven, Minnesota for a Christmas wedding.
In Once Upon a Winter Wonderland, Vivien Calhoun and Boone Buckham are preparing for their winter wedding, unaware that it will be impacted by the biggest snowstorm Deep Haven has ever seen. Will their Christmas wedding be derailed by the weather and other obstacles, or will Boone and Vivien find their happily-ever-after?
The compilation of four related novellas features new friends, as well as cameos of friends from earlier Deep Haven books.
A Beautiful Sight (by Rachel D. Russell) - Vivien has everything planned including her custom designed dress that has tragically disappeared. Is it an omen that more disasters await?
We’re Happy Tonight (by Michelle Sass Aleckson) - The best man hates Christmas, but he’ll support Boone anyway - even if it means dealing with Vivien’s quirky friend. How much trouble can it be to get Boone’s Mustang ready for a photoshoot?
The Snow is Glistening (by Susan May Warren) - The Snow is Glistening (by Susan May Warren) - Owen’s cousin Romeo is left in charge of the Evergreen Resort while the rest of the Christnenson family is on a Florida vacation. Can he care for the resort guests and keep things on track for the wedding?
Sleigh Bells Ring (by Andrea Christenson) - Pastor Brown needs a break and clarity of vision. His wife is worried about their marriage. Their daughter faces a career crisis and joins them unexpectedly, throwing a wrench into their plans. Will they find their Christmas miracle?
The wedding of Boone and Vivien is the focal point in all four stories. Each of the main characters face spiritual and personal challenges. Will they recognize God’s hand in bringing them to Deep Haven, a place where second chances (with God and others) is available?
Recommended for adult readers. Fans of Warren’s Deep Haven & Christianson Family series will welcome cameos of their favorite Deep Haven characters. Readers will enjoy the small-town charm, and a dash of romance, as well as flawed but realistic characters in this Deep Haven anthology.
Disclaimer: Book reviews are my honest opinion of books I either purchased or received free of cost from the publishers, publicists, and/or authors. I am not required to write reviews, nor to even post positive reviews.
If you are a fan of the beloved town of Deep Haven, this title is a must. A return to Deep Haven at Christmas time? Yes, please!
This collection of novellas, all taking place at the same time was a good opportunity to check in with many past Deep Haven favorites, while meeting new ones. I was excited when I learned this novella took the reader along for the wedding of Boone and Vivien. I loved the interwoven reminders of God’s loving providence in the lives of his children and how we can trust whatever happens to us is for our good and His glory.
I did struggle some with Vivian’s wedding-induced emotional hysteria, but thoroughly enjoyed Duke and getting to know Zuri. She was such a joyful, kind hearted character with great depth. I loved getting more of Romeo from the Christiansen clan. Overall, a good opportunity to enjoy a town I love so much.
*I received this book for review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I did enjoy this; it was a solid installment in the series--just the retelling of the same story from four-ish different POVs kynda got old for me about halfway through.
Vivien was also a bit aggravating for my taste (but maybe because I've been bingeing the series recently so literally just read her story right before this one?)--and maybe I saw myself a little too much in her, as well ... I can be (okay, I *am*) a definite planner too! So it hit a bit close to home!
And the last story just felt a bit off for me. So much of it could have been solved with a conversation (but then we probably wouldn't have 95% of books out there, amirite?).
""Life is never going to work out like you think..." Her mother sallowed as if realizing her own words. "But that doesn't mean God isn't in control and that your life is derailed. It just means you didn't know the route.""
Boone and Vivien are getting married! But, as their wedding approaches, the hiccups abound, beginning with a huge snowstorm coming and beginning to mess with their plans. As their friends and fellow Deep Haven residents join together to help, they all find the beauty of what it means to trust God in the unknown and the true gift of Christmas.
In the first story, we kick off with Boone and Vivien and how the unraveling of their plans for a perfect wedding begin to make them question their marriage and future. Second, we get to meet Duke and Zuri, the best man and bridesmaid pair, who set out to help the couple and find themselves on the hunt for a missing Mustang, and make up case...and ring! Then, we get Romeo's story- the Christiansen family member who was left to keep things running at the inn and event location- and who questions his place and ability to keep things together after what feels like one too many mistakes. And we end with a story of Pastor Bob and his wife, Marilyn, who are facing big questions like burnout and whether their marriage is strong enough to stand despite their latest struggles.
I absolutely loved this group of stories. Each one was enchanting and heart warming- each sharing the truth of where we can go when we face unexpected bumps and challenges- and the beauty of His faithful love for us! I found myself falling in love with all of these characters, and even wiping away some tears as the truth of God's love and faithfulness was described and portrayed so well through their stories.
You won't want to miss this one! I highly recommend adding it to your holiday read list!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
My thoughts: They're finally getting married! Or are they? The wedding of the century is planned but whatever can go wrong is. A missing wedding dress. A missing car. And ever so much more. But through the drama God's love shows through and the characters grow and realize truths about God. If you love Deep Haven and Christmas you will love Once Upon a Winter Wonderland. A collection of four romances set in Deep Haven. Highly recommended. I was given a copy free and all opinions are my own.
A unique, well-written Christmas romance story anthology . . .
The cover on this book is whimsical and cheerful, beckoning readers to open it up to read what the authors have created. When I finished reading all four of these stories I was struck by the magnitude of the carefully-constructed collection and how well the authors wove the individual tales together through shared characters and events.
The characters and romances in the stories were varied and well-developed. Each couple faced its own challenges and was forced to work together to overcome obstacles in their pathway to happiness and true love. Various age groups, ethnicities, and professions blended together to make an appealing cast of characters.
The story which stood out in my mind was the second story in the book, We're Happy Tonight, contributed by Author Michelle Sass Aleckson. I adored the female and male lead and their unusual meet-up and ensuing friendship. As often occurs in real life, one of these characters is a glass half empty personality; the other a glass half full personality. One is cheerful and bubbly; the other is gruff and intense.
The faith thread is found throughout the stories. The entire book is completely clean in language and content.
With a 'winter wonderland' as a backdrop, this anthology will satisfy readers who enjoy reading in this genre.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through JustRead Publicity Tours. All of my opinions and thoughts shared here are solely my own.
I have enjoyed returning to Deep Haven time and again in the different stories and series by Susan May Warren, so I was thrilled to receive a copy of this collection of holiday novellas to review! Each one was delightful, and I love how they dovetail so nicely together, with being from different characters viewpoints, all over the days leading up to Boone and Vivien's wedding. I personally loved getting another story with Vivien at the helm, since she is one of my favoritest characters from the small town. Fans of the Deep Haven books will enjoy returning to catch up with old friends and get acquainted with new ones.
I received this book from Just Read. This is my honest review
It was fun to return to Deep Haven and the various characters that have appeared in the recent Deep Haven Collection books. This set of four novellas are meant to be read one after the other to make a complete picture of the trials and setbacks, as well as the many beautiful and blessed moments that went into the week of Boone and Vivien’s wedding.
I enjoyed each novella and appreciated that even though the overall story was ongoing regarding trying to fix things that went wrong with the wedding preparations, every novella told its own contained story, as well. The main characters in each novella grew in their emotional and spiritual journeys.
The first novella touched on the topics of what makes a marriage last and giving your whole heart to someone. The two middle novellas brought two new couples together as love blossomed amid chaos. The last novella focused on the renewal of a marriage that seemed like it might be on shaky ground.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
From swoon-worthy couples to those a bit more prickly and in need of Christmas cheer, this sweet and wholesome anthology is just the thing to keep you company. We witness many pre-wedding mishaps that seem to spell complete disaster, but miracles abound. The very heartwarming part for me was that the calamities led to things that were so much bigger and more powerful than the characters could have planned for themselves.
Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. But what happens when the cheer has gone? We're introduced to some grouchy characters and ones that have unending mirth.
The interconnectedness of these 4 stories was beautifully done. Even with different authors, this is whimsical and entertaining. Small town romance during the holiday season is sheer magic!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.
I enjoyed reading this collection of four Deep Haven novellas. Each novella tells a complete story while each including threads from the previous one.
By the time I finished reading this book I had a smile on my face and a reminder that as bleak as life may sometimes seem, there's hope. Our Heavenly Father has not left us alone to go through our trials. He walks with us through them and uses the difficulties in our lives to bind our hearts closer to His.
And Vivien and Boone get married in the end, yeah! It was also good to see glimpses of other characters from previous Deep Haven books to see how their stories had progressed.
If you like stories of hope, miracles, and a reminder of what the birth of Jesus means for us, you'll enjoy reading this novella collection. I received an advanced reader's copy from the publisher through Just Read Tours; a positive review was not required.
There are four short stories of old and new friends that all revolve around a Christmas wedding. Such a unique idea to basically get the same story but from four different couples perspectives. Spend your Christmas in Deep Haven, where the sleigh bells ring and love is listening, in Once Upon a Winter Wonderland.
Boone and Vivien are set for a Christmas Eve wedding. And it will be perfect. Unless... a big storm comes in. And it does, threatening to take down the wedding. But old friends, along with new ones, plow ahead through all that is thrown their way to make the dream wedding come true. Can they overcome snow, lost cars and rings, fire (or at least smoke), and all the other things that threatens to keep this wedding slipping out of hand?
Join the authors as they take you to the beautiful and rural Deep Haven in four novellas brought together to tell the story of four different groups of people fighting through different backgrounds, hurts, and struggles, all bound together to help pull off the wedding of a lifetime for Boone and Vivien. With the focus on God and his faithfulness through it all, something beautiful is bound to rise from the ashes.
My thoughts - I had no idea that this was tied to a series and now, I seriously want to read every single book set in Deep Haven and having to do with these rich, deep, Christian characters. I found this an un-put-down-able book and I loved it. I can't choose which of the four is my favorite because I found my to be enjoyed in each of the different stories. Each different set of characters and each different set of challenges were endearing. This was a true joy to read.

Who doesn't love a trip back to Deep Haven at Christmas time? And with the wedding of Vivien and Boone, who could ask for more? Well, pretty much all of the novellas in this story! lol If you know anything about Minnesota winters you know they can pack a wallop, which is what happens to begin the story.
What could go wrong with wanting the "perfect" wedding? When you read the first story, you'll learn just about everything could go wrong. Vivien and Boone have one thing after another happen just days before their wedding. This story begins with them trying to get through her list so that she can have the perfect wedding and honestly, she stressed me out through her story. Poor Boone didn't feel like anything was going to go right.
The next 2 stories follow people trying to make it to Deep Haven for the wedding. Duke is quite the jaded detective while Zuri is a ray of elfish light. Bring those two together and Duke doesn't stand a chance. His wintry heart is about to be melted. I enjoyed Zuri's positivity and watching Duke thaw to her charm. I really liked how he saw her for her and not for what she felt could define her. Good thing there's a detective on the scene when things go terribly wrong in Deep Haven.
Then there's Romeo. He's stuck in cold, snowy Deep Haven while the Christensens are in sunny Florida. It's easy to see how someone who grew up in foster care would struggle with feeling left out. Stella I didn't like initially. I don't know what it is about Minnesota driving, but the snow plow trucks always get harassed, which is mind boggling because they're there to keep us safe. (a little tangent, but still) so when Stella yells at Romeo when they first meet, I was frustrated with her. You'll understand when you read the story. I end up really liking their story and both of them. Their story has a few mishaps as well.
Lastly, Bob and Marilyn have their own story. We meet them because they're Stella's parents... who are having some serious marital issues. Bob invites Stella on his and Marilyn's second honeymoon and is keeping a secret from his wife. Yikes. Bob's cluelessness after 41 years of marriage baffles me. Throughout his story he can't seem to figure out why Marilyn is frustrated. Of course, they have some disasters in the few days they're up in Deep Haven as well. Marilyn, for her part, keeps trying to reach out to light a fire with Bob and to get him to open up. This story is a good example of what secrets can do to a marriage.
A couple of notes that threw me is that in the first story it talks about the guys watching a Vikings game on a Wed. They don't play on Wed. 😉 Then in the second story, it talks about Duke and Zuri driving for 5 hours from the airport on a "good day", but if they did that they'd be in Canada. Just things you know as a Minnesotan.
If you're ready to visit Deep Haven again, you'll enjoy going back at Christmas time.
*I received this book for review. This is my personal opinion.
This was such an enjoyable book to read. Four talented authors write four stories with different "star" characters, but they all relate back to one another with the main emphasis on a Christmas wedding. This is a wonderfully magic Christmas collection with a debilitating snowstorm, lost wedding gown, a missing car, lost rings, etc. The old saying if anything can go wrong, it will go wrong is definitely true in these stories. Through the different seemingly disastrous occurrences you learn that there are no coincidences and everything works out the way it is divinely supposed to work out. I loved the characters in this story - Vivien - the bridezilla; Boone - the groom who is just trying to keep it together for his lovely bride; Zuri -the eternal optimist who loves life and sees the good in everything; Duke - the grumpy, pessimistic cop, Grinch and Ebenezer Scrooge all in one package with a soft side; Romeo - the poor guy who is in way over his head; Stella - the woman with fear of her parents disapproval or approval with a servant's heart to help others; Pastor Bob - the man who feels he has lost his way and finally Bob's wife, Marilyn - the neglected woman who just needs to know she is loved. This is a good book full of Christmas miracles, the kindness of strangers, understanding the need to have faith and lean on that faith and making the best of what could be a bad situation by using joy and laughter. I devoured this book and closed my Kindle with a smile on my face. Deep Haven sounds like a wonderful place to visit!
Thank you to Sunrise Publishing for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was a cute set of stories and fun conclusion to see Boone & Vivie finally marry. It's not completely necessary to read all the books prior to this one but I would recommend it--it would add to your reading experience. It's one complete story but there are sections broken up, written by each individual author telling a different couple's story (all the couples are connected) taking place in the same week (the week leading up to Vivie and Boone's wedding.) I enjoyed each of the stories, but the last one was my least favorite
Will Vivien and Boone's Lifetime 💞 end in their Marriage?
I Highly Recommend You 📖 the Unique, Engrossing, Christian Romance: "Once upon a Winter Wonderland" by Susan May Warren, with Rachel D. Russell, Michelle Sass Aleckson, and Andrea Christenson. It takes the basic Story of the week leading up to Boone & Vivien's Christmas Eve Wedding in Deep Haven, Minnesota; & tells it from 4 couple's perspectives. Each Author writes a different couple's Story. The 4 Novellas are: "A Beautiful Sight", "We're Happy Together", "The Snow is Glistening", and "Sleigh Bells Ring".
A massive, northern MN, Winter ❄️ Snowstorm, interferes with people's plans for the Wedding. How does God help them step away from Fear, and Perfectionism, into Freedom, and Trust? How does God help those separated, bridge the gulf to a deeper, Renewed 💗. 📖 this Inspiring 💎 of a 📗, to find how the couples survive all the twists and turns thrown their way!
I ❤️d visiting Deep Haven, and its characters again. You'll understand this📗 best, if you've 📖 Susan May Warren's "Christiansen Family Series", "Deep Haven Series", and the "Deep Haven Collection". I got so wrapped up in the drama, that I 📖 straight through. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Once Upon a Winter Wonderland is a collection of four inter-connected Christmas romances. Revisit Deep Haven, Minnesota … a wonderful wrap-up for readers who have read the Deep Haven Collection series, as well as the Deep Haven Series and The Christiansen Family Collection by Susan May Warren.
I have only read the Deep Haven Collection, six books I thoroughly enjoyed. It was fun to see many of the characters again, especially Boone and Vivien since they are featured in the first novella–and it’s their wedding facing disaster all thanks to a winter blizzard that sets off a chain reaction of trouble.
The stories weave together so much that it’s hard to consider them individually. Each has a wonderful group of characters and a sweet romance. Not to mention so much trouble facing what could be an ill-fated wedding. However, it is Christmas and it is Deep Haven, so … I’ll leave you to discover what Christmas miracles may happen.
If you have read the past books in the series, then I would definitely add this book to your reading list.
