Pausanias, geographer and historian, wrote Description of Greece , a valuable source on the ancient topography.

This traveler of the 2nd century lived in the times of Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Aurelius. From firsthand observations, his famous lengthy work crucially links classical literature and modern archaeology.

PAUSANIAS of Lydia – ca. 110 to 180 AD
He flourished at a time when Greece was under Roman rule.
Pausanias wrote a « Tour of Greece » in 10 books, mostly from his own travels and meant to be a sort of guidebook for tourists on his travels and to show him what to look for.
In simple language he tells of towns, villages, roads, rivers, mountains, bays, and fountains, and then more in detail of theatres, racecourses, sanctuaries, statues, and tombs, attached to which he will also mention legends folklore, history, oracles, prophecies, rituals, and names connected to it, like olympian champions, artists, builders.
He will go into more detail with historic wars, religion, rituals, gods, heroes, and mythology.
In style, his writing is simple, not pretentious, but expresses a quiet pride and admiration for the glorious past of Greece.
I have only just finished book III which I stumbled unto accidentally, but now I have the rest on my Kindle I will continue Pausanias with great pleasure.
