What in the world is a Snagglegrollop? And why might it be sad? A whimsical tale about how a not-so-imaginary monster makes a real friend.
When he asks for a typical pet--a dog, a cat--his parents say no, so Sam wonders, "How about a Snagglegrollop?" A what?! The next day Sam comes home from school with a strange-looking creature indeed! The Snagglegrollop eats an awful lot of food--and entire tubes of toothpaste, too. But it tells silly jokes and takes the family for wonderful weekend romps. They become very fond of it. Some nights, though, the Snagglegrollop just sits on the roof, staring at the stars. "It seems quite sad," Sam thinks. Could it be that all it needs is the companionship of his classmate Emily's Quibblesnuff?
Daniel Raymond Postgate was an English scriptwriter, author and illustrator. Some of his books include Smelly Bill, Engelbert Sneem and His Dream Vacuum Machine, and Big Mum Plum. In 2014, he collaborated with Oliver Postgate's business partner and other founder of Smallfilms, Peter Firmin on the production of a new series of The Clangers, with Daniel Postgate writing many of the episodes and voicing the Iron Chicken, The Soup Dragon, and her son, Baby Soup Dragon. He won a Bafta for his episode 'I am the Eggbot'. After the death of his father in 2008, Postgate inherited Smallfilms, the company set up by Postgate and Firmin. Smallfilms is a company that has made Pingwings, Pogles' Wood, Noggin the Nog, Ivor the Engine, Clangers and Bagpuss, and was shown on the BBC between 1950s and 1980s, and on ITV from 1959 to the present day.
I thought that this was a cute book. My first graders enjoyed me reading it as well. I thought there could have been a little more to the book, but that's probably because I enjoyed reading it to my students. This is also an AR book for anyone who might want to know. I would recommend this book to others.
I liked it cause Sam’s friend at school got a girl Snagglegrollop and then Sam had a boy Snagglegrollop and then they flew off together and danced together.
Sam asks his parents if he can have a cat or dog and they say no, so he asks for a Snaggle Grollop. When his parents ask what it is he says he doesn't know he just made it up. Then the next day he returns home from school with one. This is a fun story for the whole family with well done illustrations; a story that will keep children's attentions with fun to be had by everyone with the Snaggle Grollop's assistance.
Sam wanted a pet. He wanted one very badly. He kept asking his parents if he could have a dog or a cat but they kept saying no. Finally, one day, Sam asked if he could have a snagglegrollop. Thinking it was an imaginary creature, his parents agreed.
Of course, in walked the snagglegrollop. At first, Sam’s parents didn’t know what to do. They couldn’t very well change their mind after they’d made a promise.
The Snagglegrollop is a hilarious story. We`d definitely like a snagglegrollop at our house, or even a quibblesnuff.
I really enjoyed this story and its illustrations; it was a great book! It showed the power of children's imaginations in a truly delightful way. I loved that the families of the children were accepting of the "pets" their kids brought home.
I think this would make for a fun book to read aloud to a toddler or for a child to read on his/her own. It's also a good book for the adults in those kids' lives: The moral I took from it is to support your child's imagination, even if it means playing along. It can be fun for the whole family! :)
I am so getting one of my own. Of course when I asked Lloyd if he would be my Snagglegrollop and I could be his quibblesnuff he answered incorrectly only being focused on his videogame. Bad Lloyd not knowing how romantic he could have been. Ages 5+
His parents won't let him have a dog or a cat or a hamster so Sam asks for a SnaggleGrollop. His parents laugh (they don't think such a creature exists) and say yes when you find a snagglegrollop you can keep him. Sam finds a snagglegrollop and adventures ensue.
3.5 stars I read a book like this recently and can't remember what it was called..but it was the same premise...if fact for a few pages I was thinking I WAS reading it again.
Mom and dad won't let you get a dog...perhaps a Snaggle Grollop will appease them....
A young boy asks for a dog and gets a no. No to a cat as well. So he invents an animal and the parents say yes. I loved the illustrations. My daughter said the parents should have just let the boy get the puppy instead.
a cute story about a kid inventing his own pet because his parents wont let him have one. A good story to use in the classroom to help students foster their imagination.
