I've been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There's no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.

I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).

So far, I've worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer's mill.

A novella, part of the Guild Hunter paranormal romance fantasy. It is set before Angel's blood, the 1st book in the series, which i read and enjoyed earlier this year. Actually, the novel was the first time I enjoyed this genre and it made me eager to read more by the author. Angel's pawn did not disappoint. It packs the same nice writing, interesting world building and plot and spice. Ashwini is vampire hunter and she gets a new case where she will have to team up with the vamp who gave her the most trouble. She caught him a couple of time already and they know each other quite well, enough that things might kindle between each other. It was a fun book to listen to.

“Will you tease me this way forever, Ashwini?”

I have loved the feisty Guild Hunter Ashwini and the sexy Cajun vampire Janvier since the first moment they appeared in this series. And this little novella just made me even more desperate to get their full story.

I love the fact that Ashwini is always the hunter that takes the jobs where Janvier needs to be found, and that he always leads her on a merry chase, where right before she catches him, he makes up with whoever hired the Guild to retrieve him, making it unnecessary to bring him in. I honestly think he does this on purpose just to spend some time with Ashwini. And these two were awesome in this novella, working together to find a missing vamp for the angel Nazarach. That angel is one scary dude, and he makes my skin crawl! The angels in this world are terrifying.

“Stay with me. I’ll show you things that’ll make you laugh in delight, scream in passion, cry for the sheer joy of it.”
He knew her, she thought. Knew her well enough to offer her the wildest of rides. “You’ve started the doing,” she murmured, “but you’ve got a way to go.”

The chemistry between these two is awesome, and I love their flirting and banter. Ashwini has quite some demons because of her gift, and I hope Janvier is the one that will be able to save her. He’s so playful with her and so protective, and I love his nickname for her ;-) Already they are my favorite couple, and they’re not even together yet. Nalini Singh is a romance master!

A definite must read for all fans of this series!

This is a short story about the guild hunter, Ashwini, and the vampire, Janvier. The Angel Overlord of Atlanta gets them involved in some of his games, and I hated that winged bastard with all my heart!!! But the story was short, cool and to the point! We get to know Ashwini very well and I am looking foreword to seeing her around in the full-sized books:):):)

Happy Reading, ya'll!!!

WAIT WHAT THAT CAN’T BE IT???

So we get a novella on characters that we are not too familiar with, and I was NOT expecting so much developments, details, backstory, foreshadowing in this 65 page thing. Like I’m so curious and invested now in Ashwini and Janvier’s story.

Fingers crossed that we will get more in the future.

Also, this book has made me properly chilled in some of this angel-vampire politics. Nalini Singh’s storytelling skill is again brilliant, and this is only a novella.

Anyway, I’m giving this 3 stars. I enjoyed it.

Things that you might want to know (WARNING: Spoilers below)
Is there a happy/satisfying ending?
Love triangle? Cheating? Angst level?
Tears-worthy?
Humor? Some bantering, but not a humorous book.
What age level would be appropriate?
------------
So it has been about a week since I have really read a book because of finals, and it was like the worst thing ever.

BUT I'm back to doing some hardcore reading so YAY! And I'm going to start with reading this novella about this badass world.❤️

August 2016 re-read.

Angels' Pawn is an introduction to the world that we'll learn more about in Angels' Blood (due out 3/3/2009). A world where angels and vampires not only co-exist, but have an interesting connection. As a Guild Hunter, one of those that hunts rogue vampires down for the angels, Ashwini finds herself suddenly stuck between two vampire factions, and the angel wanting to manipulate them all, in Atlanta. She turns, for help, to Janvier, a vampire himself - who may have his own reasons for assisting her.

From the first moment I started this novella I was immediately immersed in the world. I couldn't have stopped reading if there was a fire. Okay. I hope I could have at least paused to get out of the building, but you get the picture.

I'm continually amazed by Nalini's ability to create fully realized characters, especially in novellas where the shortened format makes that difficult for a lot of authors. Angels' Pawn is no different. Ashwini is a compelling character from her first moments pounding on a door. I'm completely intrigued by her, and really hope that we get to see more of her in the future.

Janvier. Wow. What can I say except I want to meet him. A native from the bayous, with an old world charm, and an, apparently, innate sexiness, he is just fantastic. Watching him play off of Ashwini, lightening the mood and at the same time ratcheting up their relationship throughout everything they were trying to accomplish in Atlanta was truly a joy.

I can not wait to read Angels' Blood which focuses on Elena and Raphael, I believe. But I'm really hoping to see more from Janvier and Ashwini in the future. Their storyline was by no means complete - although the main conflict is tied up in the novella - we have lots more to hear about this pair.

Nalini's said it, but I'm going to give this warning to those that need an HEA. This is not a typical romance with a bow-tied HEA at the end.

It's a fantastic read, a great introduction, and I highly recommend it. If you've not read anything by Nalini Singh, I urge you to run out and buy everything you can by her. Her Psy/Changeling stories are absolutely fantastic, and this new series promises to be just as great.

This short story is an interesting add-on to the Guild Hunter series. It's marketed as a prequel to the series, but I think you should read at least the first book, Angels' Blood, before reading it, or you'll have a hard time understanding the world created by Nalini Singh. As it is, this story isn't complete on its own - and that's the only reason I couldn't give it 5 stars.

★★★★½ I liked it a lot. These two “frienmies” banter back and forth instead of bicker. Yes, there is a difference. As, Sans, my GRs friend says:
Gimme witty dialogue any day over "I hate you, get away from me, go to hell, let's have sex."
Loved the action. Some romantic suspense authors have the H/h do things separately, and I can see the reason for the logistics sometimes. But as a reader, I want to see them working together, side by side, in the thick of it. That happens here.

As a new-to-me-author, I found her “voice” pretty easily. For a short story, she told a lot. Her words were eloquent and concise; she was amazing. I will definitely read more of her writing. In fact, I thought this was a prequel, not a companion novella to Angels' Blood; but, the characters in the next book are not the main ones in this short. **sigh** I'll just have to wait for the rest of their story later in the series.

Ashwini and Janvier's relationship was my favourite sidestory from the books, making me curious about how it came to be. These two take the game of cat and mouse to a new level and damn if it isn't sexy! But when push comes to shove, it's Janvier who Ash asks for assistance. Going alone in the den of a sadistic angel is never a good idea, ending up in the middle of a power play between two vampire fractions is also a headache, so having an ace up her sleave (or a sexy Cajun for that matter) is a must. Girl should always be prepared. The fact that said Cajun makes a mean cup of java is a big bonus in my book.

That's not to say that the chase is over between hunter and the prey. Simply postponed for a little while, but who's who in this scenario remains to be seen.

Side note, I've got Blondie's One Way or Another stuck in my head for this particular duo.

Over and out

I read this story as part of the Angels' Flight anthology which contains 4 Guild Hunter novellas.

If you have read any of the other books you'll probably remember talk of guild hunter Ashwini and her vampire nemesis. Janvier has a very bad habit of getting himself in trouble with the angels and doing a disappearing act which means the guild are called in to track him down. Ash has spent years chasing him across the world and through the bayou only for him to always make his peace with the angel who hired her just before she catches him. For once Ash's job isn't to search for Janvier though and this time she actually needs his help, she has been asked to find a kidnapped vampire but the last thing she wants is to be caught up in the politics between two of the vampires who report to the angel Nazarach. Since Janvier is familiar with all of the vampires involved she is hoping he can smooth the way and help her through the situation in one piece.

Angel's Pawn is the shortest of the novellas included in this book and it is also the only one where we don't get to see a full on relationship develop between the two main characters. In spite of that it was a really enjoyable read and I absolutely loved the banter between Ash and Janvier. they have great chemistry and I have high hopes for them hooking up at some point as the series progresses - there is no way they can deny their connection forever! Ash has always been on the sidelines (although she does have a larger role in the 4th book Archangel's Blade) so we don't know a huge amount about her but she has some very interesting abilities that I'm looking forward to learning more about in future books. I don't remember actually being introduced to Janvier in the earlier books, he was mentioned but I don't think we ever saw him, so it was great to get a taste of his character too. He is one sexy Cajun with a real playboy attitude but he seems to have met his match in Ash and it looks like he's more than willing to explore their attraction.

5 Short Ash+Janvier Stars

*I know the title is Angels' Pawn and not Angel's Pawn but I was too bored to correct it when I saw it.

A short story about the growing romance between a gifted Guild Hunter and a stronger than his age would suggest vampire. It isn't a love story. Not yet. This was more action focused, a short adventure.

If you read and liked "Angels' Blood" by Nalini Singh, then "Angels' Pawn" is like an after-dinner mint...a touch of spice with a little heat to round out your meal. If you haven't read "Angels' Blood", then you'll likely just be confused. So far, "Angels' Pawn" is only available as an e-read.

Ashwini, the tormented hunter, approaches Janvier the sexy, Cajun vampire for assistance on a Guild mission to Atlanta. It seems an Archangel has contracted Ashwini's services to retrieve one of his vamps. But Ash suspects, and Janvier quickly realizes, that they are being drawn into a vampire power play and an Archangel's retribution...a very risky proposition indeed.

The heat between Ash and Janvier is sizzling, yet never consummated and I can only hope the continuation of their story is high on Singh's 'to write' list. Her ability to portray evil with just words is almost miraculous to me and the fact that it's a toss-up as to who's more evil, vampires or Archangels, is so ironic it fascinates.

After "Angels' Blood", I'm curious and waiting to see where Singh's world goes next. If urban fantasy with heavy sexual overtones sounds delicious to you, get going and pick up a copy of 'Blood', then read 'Pawn', and you can wait with me for the next release "Angels' Judgment" in the upcoming anthology "Must Love Hellhounds"--out in Sep09.

** Read as part of Angels' Flight.

I would suggest buying this as part of the Angels' Flight instead of individual due to the price of the single title. It seams high for such a short novella.

******

This one we get a closer look at Ashwini, Elena’s Guild Hunter colleague and Janvier. It’s a little moment in time with these two; before they get their full Novel Archangel's Shadows.

In Archangel’s Shadow they mentioned this moment this assignment briefly and it made me want to find out more on the backstory of Ash and Janvier’s relationship.

Ash is smart, tough, and can kick ass. She also has some “talent” or a curse, depending on who looks at it. Janvier is the ban in her existence. She’s hunted him in the past, but here he stands by her side for a Guild assignment. He has a talent for making friends with anybody.

Angels’ Pawn focuses on the action rather then the romance. The chemistry is their and we Sigh does a wonderful job giving us a taste of, Ash and Janvier's, budding teasing flirtatious relationship. As for the world it's terrifying and riveting.

I loved Angels’ Pawn.

I’ve read plenty of short stories and now after reading Singh’s novella, Angels’ Pawn has become of my favourites.

This time we get a closer look at Ashwini, Elena’s Guild Hunter colleague. Ash possesses similar characteristics as Elena – She’s smart, tough, and can kick some serious ass. But she also has her own Guild Hunter “talent”, or a curse, in her opinion. She can hear the thoughts and emotions of others through a single touch. A talent that is unique, but debilitating when the person who touches her is an angel like Nazarach who has seen and felt centuries of pain and terror.

Singh introduces an enigma in the form of a hot vampire named Janvier. Ash has hunted Janvier in the past, but this time he stands by her side for her new Guild assignment.

In Angels’ Pawn, Singh focuses on the action rather than the romance. But make no mistake, the chemistry is there. I can’t wait to hear more of Ash and Janvier in future books. The world that Singh creates is terrifying and riveting, making me wish there were more stories set in this world to devour.

Ash is a compelling character and with Janvier’s moss green eyes sparkling with interest, I think Ash may have to reconsider her no-dating-suckers rule.

The Guild Hunter Ashwini caught my attention the first time she showed up n the pages of Angel's Blood. I was really curious about this Cajun she keeps on hunting time and again. In this short story I got a chance to both meet this strange vampire and get to know the bizarre even by the Guild standards hunter. Those two are simply hilarious together. They kind of remind me of my all time's favourite fictional couple - Luke and Mara from SW Legends. So I instantly fell in love with them :)

Added bonus was meeting Nazarach - the terrifying angel that we kept hearing about in the second novel of the series. He is a fascinating creature and even though I know he will most likely be an adversary of Elena and Raphael in the future I can't help but want to see more of him. That angel gives me the creeps. Poor people that live under his rule!

This story felt like an opening for a full length novel or even a spin off series with Ashwini and Janvier as the main protagonists and I would be more than happy if that is in fact the case.

After reading the Psy-Changeling series, I needed a fix of Nalini's fascinating worlds, the way she writes is amazing... Friends have told me that this Guild Hunter series is also very good, if not better and if either is true, then I'm in for a treat...

This prequel definitely gave me an insight, although into what, I'm not wholly sure - but I'm about to find out... bring on book 1!!!

Angel's Pawn is prequel of Guild Hunter Series. The event of this novella is happening before Angel's Blood. This one is the story about Ashwini (Ash) a Guild Hunter, and Janvier, a Cajun vampire and Ashwini everlasting "frenemy". But for now, Ash meet Janvier not to play "catch me if you can" like usual, but she need his help to save one of the vampire member, prevent a war and to avoid an angel's wrath...

The usual problem when I read novella...

TOO SHORT!!!

In this novella, we know more about Nazarach, Angel of Atlanta, and one of angel that rules under Raphael' s command, Archangel of New York. I know Nazarach first from Archangel's Kiss, I never know that he's so sadistic, and cruel! I feel a pity for all of his vampire after all. But it's a prove that angel and archangel are cruel creatures. They can't look weak and all their act is about power and domination.

I hope Nalini Singh will write about Ash and Janvier more in the next books, or they have their own book. I'm intrigued with this pair, if Ash will be paired with Janvier, is she choose immortality or still become human?
Can't wait :)

I'm not sure if I should be starting this series with these short stories first. I did feel like I jumped into the middle of a story but it was easy to get sucked into this moment in time. That's what it felt like. A moment in time with Ashwini and Janvier. I'm definitely intrigued by who these characters are. I know the main characters in the series are Elena and Raphael.

I borrowed the audiobook on audible escape and the narrator was really good. She had to do several accents and I think she did a fabulous job.

Ashwini and Janvier's cat and mouse foreplay was perfect for a short story format like this. I enjoyed seeing them before their relationship starts really changing in their full length novel (book 7). I love Janvier's Cajun swagger and his protectiveness towards Ashwini. Ashwini is also an interesting offbeat character with a lot of secrets so she's always fun to read about. One of the most interesting things about this short story though was getting a closer look at Nazarach, a terrifying angel that is known throughout the series for being crazy and sadistic. Overall this was a nice short look into Ashwini and Janvier's relationship.

This is one of the prelude short stories, 0.6 in the chronology, in the Guild Hunters paranormal romance series and revolving around one of the Hunters, Ashwini, and her sometimes-prey, Janvier. Based in Louisiana.

My Take
"Angels' Pawn" is fun, adventurous, and full of action with quite the twist in how Singh portrays vampires and how she provides insight into the rules that govern Guild Hunter and angel interaction. While the Guild was created to retrieve runaway vampires for the angels, they do retain a neutral autonomy. It's a subtle political maneuvering that finds the Guild trapped into doing Nazarach's dirty work. And provides Nazarach with the opportunity to add to his, um, "collection".

There's a lovely heat between Ashwini and Janvier with lots of promise for future installments.

The Story
It's usually Ashwini hunting Janvier. This time, they'll be partnered up on a most unusual hunt, for Monique Beaumont has been kidnapped.

It's a tricky hunt with its twists and turns…and revved up with Janvier's romantic pursuit of his usual pursuer.

It's worse when Ashwini learns Nazarach has more than a passing interest in her.

The Characters
Ashwini, a.k.a., Ashblade, is a Guild Hunter and a born tracker. She also has a type of psychometry and a nightmare of a past. Ransom is another Hunter, also with the New York Guild. Sara is the current Guild Director (see Sara's last hunt before accepting this appointment in "Angel's Judgment", 0.5). Kenji and Baden are also Guild Hunters, and Sara has put them on standby.

Janvier, a Cajun, has been a vampire for two hundred and forty-five years with the annoying habit of annoying the angels. Shamiya Made him.
Atlanta
Nazarach is the mid-level angel with no humanity who holds sway here. Audrina was the offering Nazarach provided Janvier.

The Beaumont vampire family runs Atlanta — under Nazarach. They've been a lucky family over the generations. This generation that luck resulted in Monique and Frédéric, a sister and brother, being Made. Antoine is the vampire head of the family. Jean is his sister. Simone Deschanel is the new woman in Antoine's life, one with her own ambitions.

The ambitious Callan Fox has set up his own kiss. Perida is his enforcer.

Ashwini's past memories
Dr. Taj is a well-regarded physician. And I think he's Ashwini's brother. Egan is the angel Ashwini pinned to a wall a year ago.

The Cadre of Ten
There are ten archangels who rule the world, including Favashi, the archangel who rules Persia. Over a thousand years old, and she still has her heart. Neha is the Queen of Poisons who rules in India. Raphael is the archangel who rules North America from New York.

The Cover and Title
The cover is Singh's publicity photo off the the left, her name in red above it, and the title to the right of the picture with its subtitle reminding us that it's an e-short companion to Angels' Blood , 1.

The title refers to humans, and I suspect Ashwini in particular, for she feels very much like the "Angels' Pawn".

Ashwini is a Guild Hunter, a human who hunts vampires. In this world, Vamps are made and controlled by Angels and one such Angel is not happy with the powerplay taking place below him.

Ashwini wants no part of the politics surrounding Angels and Vamps but she has no choice when the fierce Archangel Nazarach comes a calling. Now she and her arch nemesis, the Cajun Vamp Janvier- who btw, happens to built like "the sexiest dream she'd ever had"- are contracted to retrieve a kidnapped member of the vampire nobility- or face the wrath of one fearsome, powerful Angel.

Blood, guts, passion and terrible fear collide in this the prequel to Singh's popular UF Guild Hunter series. I understand the h/h in this one is not the h/h in the Guild Hunter series. Still, the novella is certainly a good hook to the series. I'll be reading on! :)

I didn't really like this ebook. It was confusing and didn't really make me want to read the series. Too many characters were thrown into the mix and not enough explanation was given. You could chalk that up to this only being a 19-page ebook, but I think if you can't write something coherent you shouldn't make it a short story.

I'd suggest not even bothering with it unless you really want to know about Ashwini and Janvier - supposedly Singh is going to revisit their relationship at some point in the Guild Hunter series. I didn't really care for Ash, but Janvier I could read a book about. He reminds me of Gambit from the X-Men, but that could be the whole suave Cajun thing. If you need to read this for completion's sake I'd say wait until after you read Angels' Blood because this ebook isn't really relevant to Elena's story and it might actually turn you off from the series.

That being said, I had already decided to read Angels' Blood so this ebook didn't really sway my decision one way or the other. I'm just glad that the main series isn't about Ashwini because from the glimpse that I got, I didn't really care for her.

Reread Dec 2012. Positively sinful.

Original review:
'Scuse me while I fan myself!

Someone PLEASE tell me Ashwini and Janvier get their own book!! What can you say about a smokin' hot Cajun vampire and a kick ass female Vampire Hunter except GIMME MORE!

The story itself was vicious and scary and is a world I definitely don't want to live in, especially since it's set in Atlanta - close enough to throw stones at - for me. I do like the authentic feel of the Angels in Singh's world - not the blond, female, benevolent creatures you see in movies and TV but the ones we know exist in God's Heaven: messengers and warriors of God, "men" you do NOT want to mess with.

Janvier is a male who knows exactly what he is and what he wants and that's Ashwini. His charisma is off the charts and when he shows his protective and proprietary side, it's enough to make you swoon. Ashwini is no shrinking violet. She's a woman with a past, and Singh alludes to this being a truly horrific one, yet she's right there in the trenches trying to stay alive while fighting the voices of her inner torment. The chemistry between these two is simply electric.

I'm definitely on board for more of this series!

A short story that predates Angels Blood book one in the guild Hunter series. We get a glimpse of the intricate and deadly world.of.the guild hunters through Ashwini, she's a Hunter with a little extra someting, she has premonitions and can also sense the past.....especially violence. So choosing a career as a Hunter constantly exposes her to terrifying emotional echoes. Sashimi only finds solace when with Janvier he is a two hundred and fifty year old vampire but amazingly can still pass for human when he wants to. Ashwini has hunted Janvier three times but so far never caught him, Janvier always manages to use his ingrained Cajun charm to get out of trouble. Ashwini has been hired by Nasarecht a really scary Angel to retrieve a missing vampire fledgling and asks Janvier for his help as he has a close relationship with all the parties involved. Along the way they begin to establish a tenuous friendship which Janvier would love to take father if only Ashwini would give him her trust........
