Pretending to be a doctor is difficult enough without the undead complicating matters. Before a lethal variant of The Black Death brought London to her knees, Barty Wayman was a simple notary. When the doctor Barty was assisting dies, leaving dozens of patients needing care, Barty takes up the beaked mask and carries on in his deceased friend’s place. What Barty didn’t count on, however, was his dead-and-buried patients crawling from their graves and walking the streets of London. Barty doesn’t have to face the situation alone, however. Dr. James Buckler of the Royal College of Physicians comes to his aid. With Buckler’s knowledge and legal authority added to their side, Barty is sure they’ll stand a fighting chance. Unfortunately, Buckler seems to know just as little about the undead situation as Barty does. That is, until the zombies come looking for them both. Worse, the dead come in the name of a necromancer who was assassinated twenty years ago; the tyrannical Lord Fabian. The last thing Barty needs is a maniacal necromancer breathing down his neck. Unfortunately, it is clear that Lord Fabian is somehow connected to the plague that is, slowly but surely, devouring the entire population of London. Barty and Buckler must figure out the connection, and what to do about it, before their beloved city becomes a necropolis.
Highly recommended if you’re into: twisty plots, unpredictable yet relatable characters, friendship sprouting in hopeless darkness, self-sacrifice for the greater good, stinky London streets, surrender not being an option… all generously coated in dark magic and a sprinkle of quirky humor. Reader beware! Your assumptions will be tested…
Before I found this book, I was looking for a fun, silly book about plague doctors and honestly, I couldn't find one. Well until I saw this beauty. I truly adore this book. All of the characters are so loveable, and the story is so cute and intricate. There may be some grammatical errors, but it didn't bother me or compel me to take away any stars. Truly a masterpiece.
Great read! Enjoyed this book from front to back. A solid plot, great characters and really cool world all brought together in the first book by Sam Artisan. Blazed through it in less than a day, just couldn't put it down!
