This has been a long time coming, but it was worth the wait!! Winter's debut novel, "A Season To Kill" is a well-crafted tale of drama, suspense and the mundane aspects of every day life.

I really connected with Darcy as a character and felt horrible for her and what was going on. She is perceptive, intelligent and a bit of a hot head (but I love that)! There were characters I loved, characters I felt were deplorable and ones I felt sorry for.

Winter did an exceptional job with the amount of detail in her book. I could picture it crystal clear as I read it and nothing felt confusing or out of place. If you're a fan of crime dramas, unexpected outcomes and a beautifully written story, please pick this one up; you will not regret it.

WOW, WOW!
I love psychological thrillers and this one was fantastic. What a great read. The writing was exceptional, the characters authentic and believable. The plot was engaging and unpredictable.
A strong female protagonist, Darcy Sinclair, overcomes her own personal baggage while delving into the mind of a psychopathic killer. The twists kept me guessing, and the ending shocked me!
Great book! I’ll be looking for more from this talented author. I’ll read anything she writes.

A gripping whodunnit with more than enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the very end. Beautifully evocative, the story is at times extremely dark, yet interspersed with sharp humour. I defy anyone not to want Darcy Sinclair to be their best friend. Looking forward to reading more from this talented author.

This was such a fun and intriguing murder mystery. It reminded me of Nancy Drew with Darcy figuring out the mystery with little help from the police. I never would have figured out who the murderer was or why. To say I was surprised would be an understatement. When one of the plot twist came, my stomach immediately had butterflies with awe!

If you are a fan of Nancy Drew and looking for a book with a Scotland setting add this twisty book to your TBR!!! This was a great debut by Nic Winter and she is an amazing person and author! I always look forward to seeing Nic’s posts because she knows how to brighten every mood and put a smile on everyone’s face.

Thank you so much Nic Winter for the #gifted copy of your baby! I was provided with a copy in turn for an honest opinion.

Overview: This book is beautifully written. Every sentence drew me deeper into Darcy's world. Bravo Nic! As her debut novel this is a stunning book and I'm now eagerly awaiting the next in the series. I could relate to Darcy so much as a mother and even in her taste of TV shows (Dexter). I read this book in only three days and I didn't see the ending coming.

Good points: I loved all the different characters. Yes, there was quite a few, but each one was quite distinctive so I didn't find it confusing. The plot flowed along nicely and each chapter left you wanting to start the next. I enjoyed delving into Darcey's past, horrific as it was. I was intrigued by her character.

Not so good points: Other than the fact I have to wait a while for the next book in the series, I have no bad points.

I highly recommend this murder mystery thriller. A perfect book to pick up during this cosy and cooler season. After all...it's the perfect season to kill...

“A Season to Kill” is the debut novel of Nic Winters, a murder mystery set in the fictional Scottish town of Cedarwood which is turned on its head when Elle Bradshaw, a prominent member of the social elite, is found dead in her home and rumours of foul play begin to circulate. In the middle of this is our main character, Darcy Sinclair, a true crime fan and everyday wife and mum of two who is easily the most genuine and honest person in all of Cedarwood. Darcy is very much an outsider compared to the rest of Cedarwood: she doesn’t place high value on brands, is well aware that she’s not some catwalk model, and cannot stand the constant two-faced spite that surrounds her at every turn.

Yet, Darcy is one smart cookie, holding her tongue in order to have an easy life free from drama; while the social elite delights gossiping about those being targeted, the wheels continue to turn in Darcy’s head as she stumbles upon clues that make her think there’s a serious problem in her posh little neighbourhood. One of the things I really enjoyed about “A Season to Kill” was the differences between Darcy and the rest of Cedarwood; Darcy is an authentic and hardworking realist surrounded by people who care more about their make-up and social standing than the fact that the bodies are beginning to pile up around them. The author excels at crafting some truly reprehensible characters that surround, harass, and put down Darcy (and others) and it’s a delight to see them interacting, and getting a peek into Darcy’s inner monologue to see how she has to play this intricate game of human chess and pick her battles.

Occasionally, the author writes from the perspective of her killer to offer some tantalising insight into the perverse pleasure they get out of their actions. However, in a nice change of pace, the story is focused on Darcy, which means we get a laundry list of potential suspects because everyone in Cedarwood is shown to be a disgraceful person with reasons to go to extremes to protect their reputation. I didn’t read “A Season to Kill” to guess who the culprit was; I just wanted to enjoy the writing and the dialogue, which are both fantastically well realised. Still, Nic Winter pulled off a wonderful twist that I didn’t see coming and then doubled down by delivering exposition as a moment of desperation and self-preservation. Nic Winter has a real knack for pacing and crafting relatable, layered characters, but Darcy fittingly steals the show. Darcy doesn’t want to get dragged into the backstabbing games of the social elite, but when she does match wits with the upper elite, she does so with a cathartic, cutting wit. The book never feels too wordy, never drags, and there’s always another colourful or conceited character waiting around the corner to upset the applecart, and I found myself really connecting with Darcy and her plight.

What a debut!

I lost myself in this mystery, unable to put the story down. Crafted with all the skill and passion of my favourite mystery writers, Winters has set the bar superbly high with her first Darcy Sinclair novel.

A beautiful web of lies, decet, and seduction together with a rich cast of characters provide plenty of motives to keep you guessing right up to the very end.

I loved it. I loved Darcy and her family dynamic being so relatable, and will happily devour more of this series. Easily 5 stars.

The debut novel from Nic Winter is most definitely a must read for all those who love a bit of crime and domestic-noir.
I absolutely adored this book and couldn’t put it down, from every twist and turn, to getting to know the protagonist and all the inhabitants of this quirky little Scottish village.
A Season to Kill is the perfect modern day whodunnit, with Agatha Christie influences but all the excitement and thrill of a modern day thriller.
I really cannot recommend this book enough, and would definitely recommend that you get yourself a copy and enjoy the twists and turns of going on this journey with Darcy as she discovers who the killer is!

I can’t wait to read more of Nic’s work and more adventures with the amazing Darcy!

For those who enjoy autumn, Scottish villages, and a good mystery, A Season to Kill is a perfect read.

In this first novel by Scottish mystery writer Nic Winter, we meet Darcy Sinclair, a happily married wife, mother, and lawyer, whose childhood traumas resurface when she discovers the body of a local entrepreneur. Darcy is a strong character, vulnerable yet resilient, whose past has taught her to recognize "malignant charm." (That phrase is so apt.) And although she does not "fit in" in many ways, she certainly belongs. Darcy is compassionate to those requiring compassion, but her cynical wit when confronted with the hypocrisy and snobbery of the local elite is simply refreshing. Her thoughts, for example, as more unexpected visitors keep pouring through her door: "Did I hand out invitations to every passer-by? If _____ appeared, I'd snatch up my passport and make for the airport." Her little asides catch us unexpected, and I found myself chuckling through the most constrained social events!

Author Nic Winter knows her character well: Darcy, like so many survivors of domestic violence, suffers such guilt -- she needs to be able to "fix things", having been unable as a child to fix the violence that permeated her home. She grieves too for a mother who had so little time to be free and happy, for another loss that she could not fix.

Therefore, she must protect all those she loves and stop the violence that has come to her village. This, of course, puts her in the murderer's scope of interest.

As the intrigues unfold and the layers are revealed in this charming village, I can only think of Miss Marple and her view on village life: "Human nature is much the same everywhere, and of course, one has opportunities of observing it at closer quarters in a village." (Agatha Christie, The Thirteen Problems)

Yes, shocking and disturbing things happen, but the focus is not on shock value. A well-told story is one we return to -- for the descriptive strengths, the character and plot development, the mood, the suspense, and the themes. It grips us, but also delights us. It is one that will return as my regular autumn reading, and I am sure Nic Winter's next Darcy Sinclair novel, A Deadly Shade of Winter, will find a place on my "annual" shelf.

Elle Bradshaw is the incredibly beautiful, wealthy woman with the perfect life that no one in the upscale Scottish village of Cedarwood likes. Darcy Sinclair is the harried wife, mother, and lawyer with demons from her past who finds Elle messily dead in her immaculate mansion. Nothing and nobody are as they seem in the small community, and Darcy’s quest to find the killer when the local authority attempts to attribute Elle’s death to natural causes puts a target on her back—even as more bodies pile up.

Except for the chilling prologue, the story is told in first person from Darcy’s POV, which gives us glimpses into Darcy’s dark past and how it continues to haunt her. Clues are scattered throughout the book, but at 40 pages before the end, I still hadn’t unraveled the mystery. When the killer’s identity was finally exposed, it was a total surprise. Without giving away the plot, let me say this is a book teeming with secrets and cruel, manipulative characters whose sole desire is to ruin the lives of other people. As Darcy’s husband says, “I’ve never met so many narcissists and hustlers in my life.”

The list of people with a reason to kill Elle grows with every chapter, and I finally resorted to listing characters on the back fly page to keep up. Being American, I had to Google Scottish law enforcement terms, and the ex-English teacher in me found a number of minor oopsies—but the writer in me knows it’s impossible to find and correct all of them.

For me, a book merits five stars if it makes me care about the main characters, stays in my mind both when I’m not reading it and after I’ve finished it, and makes me eager to read the author’s next book. That said, I'm eagerly awaiting the second book in Winter's Darcy Sinclair series!

4 Stars - Really Liked it!
Darcy Sinclair, there were a few times I wanted to shake you. You're the girl from the horror movies who the audience shouts at, "Don't go outside!" "Don't open the door!" But you don't listen. Your curiosity is more powerful than your sense of right and wrong. However, without you, there would be no story!
If you enjoy murder mysteries, this debut novel is for you. Whodunit? I didn't have any idea, but once you know it makes sense! There were clues laid out through the novel.
The author paints a beautiful picture of the characters: "Harry's walnut-brown hair was thick and permanently tousled, which afforded him a casual aloofness that I secretly adored." And her wit and one-liner had me grinning, "Oh, lock your OCD in a cupboard, will you?"
Nic Winter, I look forward to the next Darcy Sinclair mystery.

Move over, Dexter. Darcy Sinclair is here. And she knows a thing or two about sociopaths. In this stellar debut thriller, author Nic Winter doesn’t pull any punches. Small town where everyone knows everyone? Check. Murder mystery where anyone and everyone is a suspect? Check. Add in Darcy Sinclair as an intelligent, likeable, yet emotionally scarred protagonist looking for the answers.

Winter’s writing style is absolutely immersive. While there were a lot of characters to keep track of, none were extraneous to the story and the author expertly navigates the plot down to the very last twist.

The Darcy Sinclair series is sure to be a hit. As a thriller author, I can appreciate the incredible talent and writing in this fun, dark, suspense ride. Highly, highly recommend this novel. I’ll be back for the next installment in the series.

Darcy Sinclair is my new favorite psychological thriller character!

This book was so easy to read and devour. I loved the tension of Darcy's small, "happy" community and the fear dwelling in it as the murders began. The mystery unraveled so perfectly with unexpected twists and turns.

Darcy was very empathetic, and Nic Winter represented her trauma so well. She was a smart, strong, and engaging lead who I could actually relate to.

The characters were well developed. Occasionally it was hard to keep some of them straight, but I felt like they all played interesting roles in the plot!

There was drama, deception, and suspense. I cant wait for Nic's next book!!

Very engaging! A bit of a page-turner for me, yet not the nicest of stories. I liked the main character, but didn't always find her behavior believable. It was a book club selection and I was a bit excited to give it a go because it was set in a Scottish village and I used to live in Scotland. However, it never felt uniquely Scottish at all and murder mysteries are just not my genre; murder is heinous and reading about it is rarely entertaining to me.

A fantastic psychological thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end. Darcy Sinclair is a strong, quick-witted female MC who is completely relatable. Darcy Sinclair easily steps into the role of protector for her Scottish village of Cedarwood because being a protector was a familiar part that had played out in Darcy's personal life long before a psychopath/sociopath began murdering people in her town. Darcy's determination to help her neighbors never falters, even when the horrific events in her town trigger memories from her past. I appreciated Darcy's ability to maintain her integrity and be empathetic at the same time. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a psychological mystery. The ending will surprise you.

A fantastic murder mystery novel, well worth a read.

The story to me felt like an Agatha Christie story but set in modern day. Darcy Sinclair is a down to earth, likeable character that you just can't help but love and want the best for. There are several twists and turns that will keep you guessing, just a great story and I for one can't wait for more.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, Nic Winter IS the modern Agatha Christie.

A compelling thriller!

Nic Winter’s debut novel is an edge-of-your-seat murder mystery that keeps you guessing until the end. Darcy Sinclair is a fascinating protagonist who discovers a dead body and works tirelessly to try and prove it was not an accident. What follows is a chain of events that keeps the reader guessing until the big reveal! The characters are well written, with a nice combination of likable and horrible people, all of whom are suspects. I am excited to know that this is only the beginning of more Darcy Sinclair mysteries!

As autumn arrives in the Scottish village of Cedarwood, the body of local entrepreneur Elle Bradshaw is discovered by shrewd lawyer Darcy Sinclair.

Elle's death isn't the only horrific tragedy in the village, the body count starts to rise. Infidelities are exposed, grudges uncovered and it soon becomes clear to Darcy that a malignant killer resides within her inner circle.
A sociopath or psychopath is hiding in plain sight. If she doesn't uncover the truth soon, Darcy could very well be the killer’s next victim.

From the minute I picked up “A Season to Kill” it kept me engrossed. Nic Winter has created a complex psychological whodunnit which I couldn’t put down.
A beautifully written, atmospheric fast paced Murder Mystery which was right up my alley…such a thrilling debut novel.

Darcy Sinclair is a brilliant protagonist. She is whip-sharp and funny as hell. I immediately connected with her character.
The plot is well constructed and entertaining with a ruthless killer on the loose and a host of likely suspects. This is weaved together with witty humorous narrative into a web of lies, secrets, deceit and darkness.

Plus the storyline was full of twists and turns that everyone at some stage becomes a suspect. This book had me gripped from start to finish.
The climactic scene between Darcy and the narcissistic killer literally had my heart racing and on the edge of my seat.

Addictive and well paced, it is a book that reveals its secrets slowly, the sense of danger increasing bit by bit as the tension ratchets up and keeps those pages turning.
I love a good Murder Mystery and this is a great psychological whodunnit that I would recommend to any reader. I am now eagerly awaiting Nic Winter’s next book in the Darcy Sinclair series.

If you're a fan of cozy mysteries and classic detective stories, then you're going to love this thriller I just finished reading. The novel's protagonist reminds me so much of Jessica Fletcher of "Murder She Wrote," and Agatha Christie's "Miss Marple." Darcy is an ordinary working mother whose life circled around her family and career. But one day it all changed when she discovered the body of local entrepreneur Elle Bradshaw. Elle's death was then followed by horrendous incidents that seem connected.

From the moment I started reading this book, I knew I was in for a treat. The novel started as a serious thriller, but Darcy's character brought a lot of humor into the story, keeping me entertained. She's smart, witty, and relatable - everything you want in a protagonist.
The plot was exciting and kept me guessing throughout the story. With every twist and turn, I was on the edge of my seat to see what happens next. The ending was unexpected, and I was blown away by the way the author managed to tie all the loose ends together.

The supporting characters were also well-written, and they added depth to the book. Each person had a unique personality and backstory that added to the overall narrative.

One thing that stood out to me about this book was the way it tackled serious issues such as domestic abuse and mental illness. The author handled these topics with care and respect, and it added more layers to the story. It's always refreshing to see a book that can balance humor with heavy themes.

Overall, I highly recommend this book. It's a perfect blend of humor, mystery, and suspense, with a relatable protagonist and a plot that will keep you guessing until the end. If you haven't already, definitely give this book a chance. You won't regret it! I give it five stars.

This is a debut novel from Nic Winter. Nic is not only a lovely lady, but also a fabulous author! I’m so glad I got to read this book and discover another new author.

The character of Darcy Sinclair ……. I loved this character. You can tell she has a strong exterior persona but I felt I got to see the softer side by the end of the book.

A psychological thriller with a bit oomph in the mix. I would recommend trying out this new author. Look forward to your next book Nic.

What a read!! I am new to the cozy mystery genre and I was truly enthralled through the entire story. ASTK made it one of my new favorite genres. I felt every emotion that Darcy felt — from the fear and suspense to the warmth and love she has for her family and her (true) friends. The way Winter writes makes the audience feel like we are a part of the community of Cedarwood. This book surprised me and hooked me and I can’t wait to read more of Darcy Sinclair’s adventures!

Did it add to the ambience that I read ‘A Season To Kill’ over Halloween. Possibly. But the atmospheric power of Nic Winter’s writing would’ve left me in the twilight, shadowy world of Darcy Sinclair if it’d been mid summer. This cleverly crafted thriller left me guessing till the end. Getting underneath the glossy facade of Cedarwood was like a blood spattered, decaying series of ‘The Real Housewives of Scotland’ presented through the sharp observations of the protagonist. Her rawness cut through the pretensions of the many manicured ladies vying for the spotlight.

The musical references throughout lifted the senses and gave a welcome, sensory reprieve from the gore. A polished, page turning debut from a series I can’t wait to be added to.

Nic Winter is a new author I have added to my collection of must reads. I devoured A Season to Kill within a few nights. I consider myself adept at spotting the killers early on and therefore can become easily bored. However, A Season to Kill had me second guessing myself. Though my gut instinct was correct, I thoroughly enjoyed that sense of self-doubt every time Winter placed plausible motives in the way.
With a complicated tangle of well-developed characters there was plenty to keep the mind sifting through possibilities.
Nic Winter's MC Darcy Sinclair is witty, fast paced, and relentless, with a sometimes-blunt curiosity. The world and imagery that Winter creates is thoroughly believable, managing to not only keep me engaged, but draw a multitude of emotions, even a smattering of open laughter.
Well Done on your debut novel Nic Winter. I will be keeping a close eye out for all that follows.
Highly recommend you give it a read.

I do love a good murder mystery if it's done well, and A Season to Kill is no exception. This debut novel from Nic Winter was such a wonderful, thrilling, and suspenseful read that I was hooked from the very start.

This story is so beautifully written, that every word drew me deeper into Darcy's world. There were many twists and turns that kept me guessing throughout, and the ending was just perfect, with a twist I just did not see coming.

I found I related a lot to Darcy's character, through her haunting memories, empathy for those around her, and humour that made me chuckle out loud. I was with the modern Miss Marple every step of the way, and by the end, she felt like a good friend.

As with any good mystery, you get to meet some really despicable characters. Nic has written each one so well that they all stand out with their different personalities - and as suspects. There are also those characters that you love and feel sympathy for, so there was a good balance. I felt that, even with many characters, each one came across as an individual. I never felt lost or confused by who everyone was, which can sometimes happen when you have a few characters to keep tabs on.

I also loved the descriptions throughout of the Scottish village. I really felt that I knew the place by the end, and all the inhabitants really well, like I was part of the community. I was quite sad to finish this book, I can't wait to visit Cedarwood and Darcy again when Nic returns with her next book.

So, if you are into murder mysteries/psychological thrillers, and even if you're not, I highly recommend you give this book a read. You won't be disappointed.

A fantastic debut novel!

As a fan of dark psychological thrillers, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed A Season To Kill which is more of a murder mystery (compared to what I normally read).

Nic could’ve easily called this book The Desperate Housewives of Cedarwood
or the Real Housewives of Cedarwood.

The mystery, intrigue, backstabbing, blackmail, and gossip made me feel as if was watching a reality show. The deaths and drama aside, the character development, plot twists, and atmospheric setting culminated in a wonderfully written book. I enjoyed every page.

Darcy Sinclair is a great protagonist and I can’t wait to read more books in her series. Hurry, Ms Winters, your fans are waiting…
