Katy Did It!

Rate this book
A fun-loving insect comes to the rescue. Like any katydid, Katy loves to hop through the garden. Her hopping, however, lands Katy into trouble when she scatters bee pollen and ruins a spider web, among other things. To make matters worse, her little brother Lou follows behind her shouting, "Katy did it! Katy did it!" It seems as if Katy can do nothing right. Then she meets some ants, who have troubles of their own and need Katy's help. Will Katy save the day? This lively book by Lorianne Siomades is picture perfect for preschoolers.

I really liked the pictures. The cute out textures are great! The Story in part is tattling... telling vs tattling..."Telling is "I am I hurt, I someone hurt, could someone else be hurt" Tattling is "Jenny took glue"

My rating of this book is based on how I see the potential for using it to discuss very in-depth novel-study ideas with very young students. Is Lou always getting Katy in trouble? Explain your answer :)

Katy, like any good katydid, loves to hop! When Mama sends her outside to hop (hopping in the house is quite sensibly forbidden), it's not long before Katy has hopped right into trouble. First she scatters pollen, then she scares aphids, and the trouble keeps on coming - always announced by little brother Lou's cry of "Kary did it! Katy did it!" Will Katy ever find a place to hop where she won't get in trouble?

Older siblings will immediately sympathize with Katy's troubles with her tag-along little brother, but the ending of the story sort of just fizzles. We get the great scene of Katy rescuing the ants and then we end with Mama saying she's proud of Katy when that was never really shown as being doubted. For the coda with Mama to make sense Katy needed to get in trouble for hopping inside to begin with. As it is, Mama is clearly not mad or even annoyed at the beginning of the story; she just quite cheerfully reminds Katy that she needs to go outside to hop.

Siomades' illustrations are digital but the style is reminiscent of cut-paper collages with a very three dimensional feel. The bright colors really pop from the stark, white pages although the lack of a background does feel weird at times. I also wasn't always thrilled with the text design and placement except for the "Boings."

My favorite part of the book was the "Boing Boing Boing Uh-oh!" refrain; my storytime crowds picked up on the repetition very quickly and joined right in. I think there's just something inherently fun about saying the word "boing;" it has a good feel in your mouth and is onomatopoetic to boot!

Katy is a katydid who loves to hop but her hopping gets her into trouble and her brother let's everyone know by shouting, "Katy did it! Katy did it!" When she meets some ants, though, her hopping actually saves the day. It's a cute preschool story perfect for spring/summer. Plus the illustrations are very vibrant.

The illustrations in this book were very colorful and done digitally. Throughout the book Katy (the grasshopper) kept getting into trouble by either scattering pollen all over the flowers, scaring all the aphids away, or tangling up a spiders webs but in the end Katy helped ants who needed her help to remove an olive from there ant hill. Cute book! Even

Cute story about a Katydid named Katy who loves to bounce around and stir up trouble for the other insects...until one day she becomes a hero by saving the ants colony!

Great book for preschool story time for an insect theme or how to behave and respect others. Nicely illustrated too.

Children enjoy repeating the "boing, boing, boing, uh-oh!" phrase which appears on every other page as Katy (katydid) accidentally makes one mess after another and her tag-along little brother Lou tattles that "Katy did it!".

Katy's bouncing gets her in trouble everywhere she goes, until her bouncing helps rescue the ants. Try in storytime.
