A Xeric Grant Recipient! The long-anticipated graphic collection from Lauren R. Weinstein is finally here! INSIDE VINEYLAND contains 40 of Weinstein's finest works, many originally published in Seattle's legendary STRANGER. Each comic is just one page long - perfect for the bathroom, the subway, or watching TV. You will be amazed by such mind-blowing classics as 'The Bird War' and 'The Manic Depressive Dogs.' You will be embarrassed by the 'Wacky Packages'-inspired ad, 'Charmley: For Your Poor Ass.' You will ask 'Huh?' in wonder as you gaze at 'Self-Visualization Activities.' An extended bonus story is also included, telling of a robot's troubled quest for love as he's torn between his lust for electrical devices and his duty to serve humans!
Lauren R Weinstein is a cartoonist who is still recovering from having a baby and moving to the suburbs of New Jersey (it’s been two years). Her comics books include, Girl Stories and The Goddess of War, and her work has been published in Kramer’s Ergot, The Ganzfeld, An Anthology of Graphic Fiction, and The Best American Comics of 2007 and 2010. Her work has also appeared in the New York Times, Glamour, and Heeb magazines. She is currently working on a sequel to Girl Stories.
Did I order this? Geez, I must've. It looks like something I would have ordered. Anyhow, it's pretty messed up AND there are boobies (non realistic looking) I hope no one complains about it. It's very good though.
I love this early work of Weinstein's, its humor, its absurdity, its irreverence. Her current comics work is good, but doesn't have the same edge as the pieces in this collection.
This is Lauren Weinstein's collection of shorter gag pieces, and anyone used to reading these collections knows they're always a mixed bag, even from the best artists like Dan Clowes or Jason or Kevin Huizenga (okay, maybe not Kevin. He's pretty much always mind-blowing.) BUT, Weinstein is a fucking champ and totally swags this the fuck out and these are weird and stupid and great and dark and occasionally beautiful in some strange way. Mostly stupid. In a good way. It's very similar to girl stories, only a lot less based in reality and a lot more vulgar. Bigfoot Monster Fuck Rally, anyone?
Several pages are so good they make the whole thing worth it. "People I Did Not Sleep With in High School" could be a poster and I would look at it every day and still find something amazing there. Wish I could do faces and darkness and food like Lauren.
