The United States are divided up into eight regions: the New England States, the Middle Atlantic States, the Southern States, the Midwestern States, the Rocky Mountain States, the Southwestern States, the Pacific Coast States, Alaska and Hawaii. Each region is described in terms of the terrain, the climate, and what things are important in each. Did you know, for example, that the Grand Canyon in Arizona is the largest canyon in the world at 227 miles long; or that the Rocky Mountain range is 3,000 miles long and 350 miles wide in some areas? Also, Mt. Rainier in Washington is 14,410 feet high! Hawaii, the newest state, is made up of 20 islands! This book makes for some very impressive reading!

I've had this book since Kindergarten (so like 20 years). It was one of the few nonfiction books I had and I remembered loving the pictures. I shared it with my own daughters tonight, who also loved the pictures.

The book goes through each region of the USA from New England to Alaska and Hawaii. It gives the states with a small map and then talks about what each region had in common. Each region has 2-3 pictures about things that are special in that region. It is by no means a comprehensive look, but it meant as an introduction to the regions of the United States.
