when you expect too much you're often disappointed, as i was for most of the book. the second book of the vampirates series was .... nice.
if i wanted to make it into three parts they'd be these: the academy, Grace's moral dilemmas , cool piratey or vampiratey stuff.
first of all the academy....oh so boring. nothing cool or even interesting about that, and i really hope the writer has some great ideas about Grace's spiritual experiences (the cover was cool though).
the second part, Grace's moral dilemmas, i mean how old is she? how can she feel responsible for and worried about her brother and Lorcan at the same time? it was pretty obvious from the very beginning that either one of the twins should go on with their own journey, why do they have aaaall these grown up emotions and at the same time want to stick with each other like a couple of kids?? a little drama maybe , but this much??
the third part, obviously my favorite part was very good, i really liked the evil Sidorio ^ ^
though there's also one tiny little problem with this part, the awakening of Jez, or as they put it "the crossing" was sooo lame, i mean, they're vampires for Pete's sake, no blood shed nothing? there should at least have been something bloodier , scarier, cooler :/
i know for a fact that the third book is amazing, i hope this book is the only one in the series that'd disappoint me ^ ^

Suspense - a night surfer, inhuman, vampire Sidorio refuses to curb appetites, thrown off by Vampirate Captain Drakoulis. Crewmate twins 14, Grace wants to return for blinded vampirate Lorcan who rescued her from drowning, free Connor from life-binding articles to their Captain Molucco and study at the Pirate Academy. But the faculty are not as kind and honest as they seem, especially former ship deputy Cheng Li, suspiciously eager to be her confidante and choreograph Connor's sword fight demonstration against his new best friend Jacoby.

I like the concept, world, buildup (to foregone conclusion), standalone independence from prequel, easy G-rated read - much conversations, fun rhyming ditties - but little happens over many pages (1 1'2 lines "No" p354), overly abundant visions. Both teens give up trying to control the other's destiny, recognize the need for independent journeys.

If Grace's body is still comatose in the Academy, how can Lorcan touch her? Grace finds Captain Drakoulis familiar, leaving too much for sequels I would read, but not make an effort to find.

If you are looking for som real crap, you should read this. It got to be the worst book I`ve ever read! Siriosly, I can`t see how people can actually earn mony by writing this stuff. The whole plot is extremly childish and patethic. A pirate school? This book is the result you`ll get if you mix Harry Potter, Twilight and pirates of the Carribean. Yes. It is vampire-pirates (or what they call them in the book: vampirates) at a pirate school.
They are, as in Pirates of the Carribean, presenting the pirates as the heroes. Like beeing a pirate, who`s jumping around killing others is fantastic. The twelve-years-old hero of course never kill anybody, but he is with the others when they fight.
When ONE pirate dies everybody`s shocked as if that was unlikely. When a bunch of people is bording an other armed ship, many is dying, but not here. The plot is unrealistic, and silly.

That went from a really cool adventure to boring and being hard to pay attention to.

This book is a continuation of the Original Vampirates book. Grace and Connor both attend a pirate academy for a week. All the while, Grace is still wondering about Lorcan, and his strange condition because he stayed out in the sunlight. She transports herself spiritually and visits Lorcan, as well as Darcy and the Captain, who all tell her to stay away from the ship. Connor is perfectly happy, and wishes to stay in the academy, while Grace is driven to madness as to jump off of a cliff to find the Vampirate ship.

This book is not as good as the first book. It is still a very good story, but Connor's portion of it isn't that interesting compared to Grace's. Grace has a lot of action, where as Connor is learning how to tie knots and fight better with swords.

¡Recomendado!

I really liked this book. I hate how Sidorio made a crew for himself and how he is planning on wiping the other Vampirates out. I like how Grace is willing to stay behind, no matter the danger, to save Lorcan’s sight. I like how Connor wants to take a break from the pirates and go to the Pirate Academy. I don’t like how Grace is always going and throwing herself into danger. I like how she finds the Vampirates again and how the two of them stay with the people who saved them.

Tide of Terror, the second book in the Vampirates series is a thrilling ride full a more pirates, action, adventure, betrayals, and more! For me, it was fast paced. Best of all, there was a little more about the vampirates although I would have liked to see more (and that is what the sequels are for).

Connor and Grace were together for the most part in this book, but you can see that they are destined for different paths. Connor wants to be a pirate. In fact, he excels at everything pirate related. He even has visions of being a captain in the future. Grace, on the other hand, longs for the Vampirate ship and Lorcan, her vampirate friend. That being said, she does some pretty crazy things to try to get back on the ship. From jumping into the harbor to taking "spirit journeys" to visit the ship. From Connor's visions to Grace's "spirit journeys," I am curious to discover if the twins have some sort of special powers that they are not aware of.

The only parts I didn't like were the few parts where I was like "Wow, that's lame." An example is when Connor and his friend, Jacoby, did a special handshake. I didn't think it was necessary, but then I remembered that Connor is only fourteen, so I guess it's okay.

Anyways, I can't wait to see where Justin Somper takes the story next. Tide of Terror was a fun book to read. It was a quick read that was just fun. I love the mystery the Vampirates present. I look forward to finding out more about the mysterious captain of the Vampirate ship. I want to know why he wears a mask, and who exactly is behind the mask.

Twins Connor and Grace have been reunited after their separation, and are both staying on The Diablo, but after a turn of events Grace worries for Connors safety and asks him to take a visit to the Pirate Academy. The Academy is not like any other school, and Connor loves it; however, Grace is no longer enjoying it. Connor is considering becoming a full time student while Grace is trying to get back on the vampirate ship. All the while more people are leaving the Vampirate ship, and Sidorio is making deadly plans.

I chose to read this book after the first book "Vampirates: Demons of the Ocean" got me hooked. These books leave you wanting more after every chapter, and keeps you on the edge of your seat!

The plot twists in this book were incredible, and I loved every one of them. The conflicts in it are also very interesting and really get you into the story.

The setting in these books however is a bit confusing. It is set in the future after a flood covers most of the earth, forcing mankind to revert to older technology. Not all technology is lost, which makes it a bit confusing.

My overall impression of this book is very good. I really enjoy the action packed adventure, and intensity it brings.

I think just about anybody could read this book along with the rest of the series. It has romance and love, and action and adventure. It is probably more interesting to younger audiences though.

There is not too much to worry about as far as offensive material, just violence, blood, and consumption of alcohol (all part of the pirate life).

Vampirates (Tides of Terror) was written by Justin Somper. This sequel to Vampirates (Demons of the Ocean) was published in June of 2007. These books are apart of a fantastic realistic fantasy series. In the book you meet the main characters Connor and Grace who are brother and sister. Many other important characters come in to play throughout the series, but in this book the story is centered around Connor and Grace. The majority of the book takes place at the Pirate Academy, which essentially is boot camp for pirates. This is a classic tale of how perserverence and hard work will eventually pay off. Grace and Connor who belong to different ships from the previous book, Grace is with the vampirate ship and Connor the pirate ship, come together and enroll in the Pirate Academy. There they learn how to properly handle rapiers, blunderbusts, and other pirate tool essentials. They then end up having to use their newly learn skills unexpectedly by ditching the academy to aid their fellow ship and crew. Personally, I loved this book along with the previous book and cant wait to read the rest of the sequels. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

Vampirates: Tide of Terror is the 2nd book in the Vampirates series. It follows the story of twins Grace and Connor Tempest after they are united at the end of Vampirates: Demons of the Ocean. The Vampirates series takes place in the year 2512, in the future when massive floods (due to global warming?) have changed our world. I really love this book! Could not put it down! This story starts at first on the Diablo and then continues on to the Pirate Academy, with some "trips" to the Vampirate ship. I know some say that this one is more about Connor, but I disagree. There is a lot going on with Grace, as much as Connor, but I do not want to give any spoilers! During their visit to the Pirate Academy the author gives an idea of the Pirate Federation and how it is a global network. I am excited to read, in the next books, the kind of role the Pirate Federation will play. Overall, there is a good balance between both twins in this book. You really get to know where Grace's heart and where Connor's allegiance lies. An absolutely exciting and fun read. Started on the 3rd book Vampirates: Blood Captain. Really love this series so far!

Personal Response
I really enjoyed how immersive the book got at times. I liked when things would get rocky and then I would have to stop reading, and I couldn't wait to read it again. I really want to continue the series and can't wait to get the next book.
Plot Summary
This story is about Connor and Grace Tempest and their adventures aboard the The Diablo and The Nocturne. Connor is aboard The Diablo and he has seen his best friend Jez get killed in a duel. Jez was then brought back by a Vampirate named Sidorio who later killed Molucco Wrathe's Brother Porfirio. Connor and the crew hunt down Sidorio and Jez for this. Connor didn't believe that he was seeing Jez. Connor and the crew killed Sidorio and Jez ...or did they? Grace was able to get back to the Vampirate ship to help the Captain and Lorcan with the rebellious Vampirates

I think anyone who loves a long adventure/mystery book would enjoy this. Someone interested in Vampires and Pirates would like this book. Anybody that likes stories about kids who lost their parent would like this too.

I *really* liked this one! I felt the pace was a lot faster than the first book. To me the first book had an almost childrens storybook fairy tale feeling to it but this one had more of a fantasy/vampire feel to it. The character development with those at the Academy took me by surprise and I'm eager to see how everyone continues to evolve in the other books!

I notice that people seem to either hate or love this book in their reviews. I think most of that problem lies in that this book has a very different feel/tone than the first one. But isn't that good? I personally like the change and appreciate seeing something different from authors when I pick up the next book in their series.

I'd love to read a lot more about Lorcan and Grace in the next one. I would have liked more of them together in this book :)

It was a little slow going at first, because we had to back track and make sure we knew where we are at in the story (which is a good idea if it's been a while since you've read the first book).
The character development is slow, but it's interesting to see how the characters handle what is thrown at them in this book.
The first book was better, but I am looking forward to what the third book (Blood Captain) has in store.

This was so unnecessarily long and I still dislike Connor's chapters and unfortunately, it was the majority of this book. I didn't enjoy it as much 10 years ago and still didnt now either but thankfully i could finish it in a day due to the audiobook.

The narrator made me want to stab my ears though with the amount of saliva noises and the singing parts. God, I could feel it grating my eardrums.

This may be one of the worst things I've ever read. The pirates don't really do pirate things and the vampires don't do vampire stuff. I realize this is supposed to be geared toward "young adults" but it is overly saccharine and trite. If for some reason you are looking for a good vampirate story (I'm sure there's at least one other person out there), check out Image's Sea of Red instead.

This is just a testament to the fact that I lack the ability to choose a book by its cover.

10 Things I Hate about this book:

1) mixing modern slang with past times
2) oh whatever, this book doesn't deserve my few precious remaining brain cells. I hated the book and have a hard time believing anyone could become engaged in its story (if you could call it a story).

I was very tempted to give this book just one star, but the last 100 pages made it up for me. I knew there was a twist coming up but i couldn’t figure it out, and I do love my twists. So two stars it is. I want to read the third one but im so furious that this was the sequel.
I read the first book in one day, one sitting, but this book took me weeks to read. I was so mad about everything in this book. For a series called Vampirates we barely saw them or the ship in this book. The only reason I kept going on with this series was that I am way too invested in Lorcan and Grace. At this point, I need to see it to the end. Its just a shame that this book was such a disappointment to me. I only liked the ending, and I honestly wish I could just erase the 300 pages in the middle. I don’t care much for Connor’s role in the series and this book seemed more focused on his journey as opposed to Grace’s, but I think the third book will set everything back on track. This book, however, feels very much like a filler in between books. Meh.

Its an easy read, middle grade, probably geared more towards older kids. I just read it because I read the first one, and now I need to know how it all ends.

Clearly, I’ll still be reading the rest of the series, so that says a lot. Maybe more about me than this series.

the second installment of a wonderful story about vampires and Pirates and Vampirates. In this story we see Connor and Grace visit the Pirate Academy after the death of one of the crewmembers of the Diablo. Connor decides he wants to stay and become a pirate captain, until he learns that Cheng Li and the headmaster were manipulating him. Grace, still trying to find a way back onto The Nocturne, is having visions of Lorcan and the rest of the crew. She is able to transport herself to the ship in an ethereal way. Eventually she learns to get back permanently, but how will she fare as the next donor to Lorcan? The captain has said multiple times it is not safe for her to be there.

I am loving this series. I was introduced to it by a friend in highschool, but I only got halfway through the third book before she took it back. Im loving the details of all the characters, the development of Cheng Li towards grace and her compassions is wonderful. Connor's stubbornness is being reigned in a bit due to the real life danger of being a pirate. I can't wait tp see what happens next .

This is a review for the first and second book.

HERE THERE BE SPOILERS...........

So the first one was ok, maybe two and half stars. To make things easy, I'll do a pros and cons list.

Book one pros:
1) The shanty, I thought that was pretty cool.
2) Lorcan. Can't deny that dark hair, blue eyes and Irish accents are some of my weaknesses.
3) The idea of vampire pirates, though the combo of names came across as childish.
Honestly, I'm having trouble coming up with more.

Book one cons:
1) So it's set in the future but they don't have much tech so it's pretty much pointless. I guess the author wanted to appeal to younger people by making the dialogue modern, but it really didn't work. Pirates and "cool, buddy" don't float my boat. Pardon the pun.
2) The writing lacked polish and a distinguishable style. I felt that anyone could have written this.
3) Grace. What an idiot. She's supposed to be smart, but that must just apply to her vocabulary and not common sense. If she'd just listened to Lorcan and stayed in her cabin, things would have turned out much better. And her lack of seeing the bigger picture and asking the right questions is so annoying.
4) The names. For some reason there are random Chinese people hanging around Australia. I know that those countries are kinda close, but we're given no explanation for why there is such diversity in the crew. Yeah, she came from the Academy and isn't a part of the original crew, but it seemed out of place. You have Molucco, Sidorio, Lorcan, and then Cate, Grace and Connor. Whatever. (As a side note, I thought Bart was in his forties. At least, that's how he came across in the dialogue.)
5) We're not given a reason in book one for why they have so little tech and have resorted to piracy in the traditional meaning of the word. (Apparently there was a flood that set them back centuries, sort of. But that explanation comes in book two, I think.) The book would have been much better had it been set in the mid 1700s or early 1800s. You can still have the weight of living forever being an issue too, since Sid was involved with Caesar. If this one thing had been changed (and the modern dialogue) it would have worked so much better.
6) The lack of emotional bondage you feel with any of the characters. The author gave me no reason to like them, pirates or vampires. I don't care what happens to them and the overall plot is pretty meh. Here's my theory for the series: Grace and Lorcan get together. She probably gets turned into a vampire or gets special powers. Connor becomes the captain of The Diablo or starts his own pirate corporation. They beat Sid and his cronies. Someone they meet is actually their mother, drama drama, and everyone lives happily ever after. I really don't care enough to find out if I'm right.
Oh, and Connor and Grace end up forging friendships between the two ships' crews and they all sail into the sunset, looking for destiny and booty. The End.
7) Another thing that should've been changed is the age group this is aimed at. In the library it's YA, but juvenile is more appropriate.
8) And finally, I really had to force myself to finish it. It's not that fat, but it seemed to drag on into oblivion and beyond.

Would not recommend it. If you want a story about vampires, read the Vampire Plagues trilogy by Sebastian Rook. Shorter, period appropriate and love triangle free. (Always a plus.)

As for book two, I didn't even finish it. Read the first two chapters and skimmed the rest. My quick thoughts on book two:

1) First of all, you know it's Sid on the beach immediately, so why beat around the bush?
2) Speaking of shrubbery...peaches and pomegranates growing at the same time?!?! In what universe is that possible? (I stand corrected. Having researched it, peaches and pomegranates do ripen at the same time in Australia. But if you live in America, like I do, that would never fly.) And seeing the moon when a storm is in full swing? Gimme a break.
3) Jez Stukeley. Who? We didn't get that character in book one, or even a whiff of him. Which makes his "death" all the more pointless. (I didn't see the spot on my skim when he gets turned, so no comment.) Why should I care about a guy I met mere pages ago? Exactly, nothing.
4) Grace. If she didn't want to go with Connor, she should have said so. What a vexing, stupid girl.
5) Ship lanes. Umm, what? Who cares where pirates go? That's why they're pirates. They don't have laws they actually follow. As they said in Pirates of the Caribbean, "They're more like guidelines." Pirates are supposed to be unscrupulous and wayward. Let Molucco go where he wants I say.
6) The writing emotionless-ness of everything, as explained above.
7) Why is there a pirate school? That seems unnecessary.
8) Even though I didn't read it all, I felt like there was a severe lack of answers. Like who is their mother and why does Captain Vampirate know stuff about their father? Someone said in a different review that Grace thought Captain Drakoulis looked familiar. Uncle, most likely. And oh, I don't even care. Surprise surprise.
9) Lorcan being blind and pining after Grace (I assume) and not taking care of himself. What a wimp and lazy bum, and idiot. Congratulations Mr. Somper! He and Grace are perfect for each other.

Final thoughts on book two:
When the first book let me down, I thought it was just a new author finding his sea legs. But not so. The only reason I started this series was because I'd just read his newer book Allies and Assassins. I LOVED that book and figured this would be great too. A&A was completely the opposite of Vampirates. I felt for the characters, they asked the right questions and the setting was great. Everything felt real and I LOVED it. Go read that and forget this series ever happened.

In the end, this review may sound scathing and mean, but I'm just saying what I thought. We all want something different from our books and this wasn't my jam.

Pol roka dozadu som čítala Vampirátov 1. Čisto z nostalgie, keďže sme to zvykli čítať, keď sme boli decká.

I thought this book was a great sequel to the first Vampirates book, it was very creative and clever to mix vampires and pirates. This fictional story is about two twins ( about 15 years old ) named Conner and Grace. In this story ( remember it is book 2 ) Conner and Grace attend at a pirate school and learn more about the future of piracy. When Conner finds out that Grace wants to learn more about the mythical vampirates, and Conner wants to become a captain of ship, he decides they should part ways.
I recommend this book to people who love fantasy and are not bothered by slaughter, horror, or fear. I also recommend this book to people who like to read series of books.

I enjoyed reading this book quite a lot. It's a good mixture of adventure and suspense. You're able to see both Grace's and Conner's thoughts and feeling and their progression as characters. I feel the book also showed a lot about decisionmaking, trust, and acceptance.
In the book, Grace and Conner make decisions to trust certain people. Some people showed that they could be trusted while others did not. It also showed that we all have our different journey's in life and sometimes we just need to accept that. I liked it when Conner finally realized that. He realized that he and Grace were going on different journeys and he finally accepted that and that it would be okay.

This was such a shocking book. I found the fights good and the death both shocking and well addressed. I loved the pirate academy yet I fleur line it could have been expanded upon. Yet I loved reading about the time there and how both of the twins had a similar arcs mainly able going where they needed to be.
I loved how Connor was able to grow in this and was able to let his sister go. I also like how his encounter of the Vampirate Captain went. I also love the battle in the end too and how he was about to trust the Captain.
Yet I do find it interesting that both twins seem to have powers and I am curious to see how that develops.
