Sadly slightly dated now -- some of the areas are no longer consistent with more recent historical or archaeological evidence. However, I've not found a more recent work which does what this book does -- assemble historical estimates of population on a fine enough grain of detail to be useful for looking at individual areas. More recent books look at broad areas of the world; McEvedy takes it down to individual country-sized units.
