This review is of “Wildfire” by Carol Finch.

The book begins in St. Louis, 1805. It is here that a family is trying to go west. The family consists of Justin Carver, his son Russ, and Justin’s stepdaughter Alexa, 21, the heroine of the book. The men have just returned from an unsuccessful attempt at hiring a wilderness guide, and Justin has decided to “encourage” Alexa to go see the guide, Keane Rawdon, the hero of the book, to try to change his mind. Alexa does go, reluctantly, to see Rawdon. S This review is of “Wildfire” by Carol Finch.

The book begins in St. Louis, 1805. It is here that a family is trying to go west. The family consists of Justin Carver, his son Russ, and Justin’s stepdaughter Alexa, 21, the heroine of the book. The men have just returned from an unsuccessful attempt at hiring a wilderness guide, and Justin has decided to “encourage” Alexa to go see the guide, Keane Rawdon, the hero of the book, to try to change his mind. Alexa does go, reluctantly, to see Rawdon. She doesn’t convince him to change his mind about leading her family through Osage Indian territory, but she and Keane become attracted to each other and soon become lovers.

Determined to go into Osage territory, Justin hires a scout, Silas Gregor. Big mistake. He does nothing but drink, get the Carvers in trouble and try to rape Alexa. When they meet up with a band of Osage braves, Russ and Justin are killed and Alexa is taken hostage, later to be saved by Keane, who it is revealed is half-Osage.

Soon after making their escape from the Osage, Keane decides to take Alexa to St. Louis. There, she gets a job in a hotel; it’s a short-term job, however, as Keane decides to take her to New Orleans with him.

On the way to NOLA, Keane and Alexa marry. When they arrive, they meet up with Chanler Raudaneau, Keane’s half-brother (Keane shortened and anglicized the family name), Chanler and Keane own the family’s shipping business, and Chanler is the sole owner of a gaming hall. We also meet Chanler’s scheming wife, Jessica, who wants Keane and is actively plotting to have Alexa killed. Chanler is also involved in shady business, and one of his associates is...Silas Gregor. Silas tries once again (he tries three times) to rape Alexa; this time, she kills him after Keane beats him up. Jessica is also killed trying to kill Alexa. Chanler confesses to his perfidy and he and Keane reconcile.

By the end of the book, Alexa and Keane profess their love for each other, and she gets the shock of her life when she discovers that Russ-whom she presumed to be dead-is very much alive. Alexa and Keane decide to leave New Orleans to return to the wilderness and have their Happily Ever After.

Upside: I checked another book off my TBR pile.

Downside: Most of the books this author writes, usually under the pseudonyms Carol Finch and Gina Robins, have elements of humor and lightheartedness. “Wildfire” is not one of those books. Like most of Ms. Finch’s books, there is a lot of back-and-forth between the hero and heroine. The banter here, however, is not humorous but rather two people arguing for the sake of arguing, and becomes quickly tiresome.

Alexa is a beautiful woman with a great body, and we learn later in the book that she has hidden talents, but she is also shrewish, argumentative and does not always display good judgment. She is also way too reliant on Keane saving her from the frequent trouble she finds herself in.

Keane is a horn dog. All he wants from Alexa is a sex partner. Ms. Finch tries to redeem him toward the end of the book, but for me, it’s too little too late. The characters are a bit one-dimensional and are only mildly developed.

Sex: a lot of sex scenes, using the purplest prose in romance novels.

Violence: Multiple scenes of assault, battery, shootings and killings. Three attempted rape scenes. The violence is not graphic.

Bottom Line: There was a potentially good book here. Ms. Finch didn’t write it. ...more

The story was great, very exciting. The heroine kept getting into trouble and bad situations and of course her lover came to her rescue every time. There was a LOT of romance and passion in the book, but it was still a great story.
