ഡെറിക് ജോണിന്റെ, പോയട്രി കില്ലറിനു ശേഷം നടക്കുന്ന പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഒരു കുറ്റാന്വേഷണം. ലില്ലി ബെർണാടിന്റെ മരണം, അത് ഒരു കൊലപാതകമാണെന്ന് ഡെറിക് വിശ്വസിച്ചിരുന്നു. എങ്കിൽ അത് ചെയ്തതാര്? ഒരുപാട് ആളുകൾ ഡെറിക്കിന്റെ സംശയവലയത്തിൽ ഉണ്ട്. ആരെയും ഉറപ്പിക്കാനാകുന്നില്ല, പക്ഷെ എല്ലാവരിലും ഒരു രഹസ്യം ഉള്ളതുപോലെ ഡെറിക്കിന് തോന്നി. അവരിൽ നിന്നും കുറച്ചു വിട്ടുമാറി സംശയത്തിന് പിടികൊടുക്കാതെ നിന്ന ഒരാൾ! എന്നാൽ അവരുടെ കൂടെ തന്നെ ഉള്ള ഒരാൾ. അയാൾ ആകുമോ?

I just finished reading 'Lilly Bernard' by Sree parvathy, the second installment in the Derek John Crime Investigation Series. After enjoying 'Poetry Killer', I was eager to dive back into Derek's world.

'Lilly Bernard' is a gripping, fast-paced read that explores the murder of the titular character. Initially dismissed as a heart attack, Derek's instincts hint at foul play.

From an investigation thriller perspective, the book was decent, lacking exciting twists and turns, yet remaining unpredictable. The language was engaging and energetic, with a notable increase in English words reflecting the evolving Malayalam reading public.

Returning to Malayalam literature after a while, 'Lilly Bernard' was a promising read. Sriparvathy's writing style made this an effortless page-turner.

However, I missed Maya, my favorite character from the first book. She was merely mentioned in passing, feeling like an afterthought. Her absence was palpable, especially since this book focuses on Derek's interactions with Susanna.

Ironically this book posed the moral dilemma: whom should I side with – Susanna, the devoted wife and mother, or Maya, the lover and friend?

Setting aside their unconventional arrangement, Derek and Maya's bond exemplifies a genuine male-female friendship. At the same time my Orthodox Indian hardwiring won't let me turn my back on Susanna.

Maybe as author K R Meera aptly puts it, "it's not mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, or lovers that can change or influence a man; it's good female friends.". There might be a place for both of them in Derek's life.

"Do not judge a book by it's cover" എന്നാണ്. പക്ഷേ ഈ കവർ ചിത്രവും അതിൽ ഉള്ള 2 പേരുകളും എന്നെ ഏറെ ആകർഷിച്ചു. @sreeparvathy3 യുടെയും നമ്മുടെയും സ്വന്തം ഡെറിക് ജോൺ പുതിയ ഒരു കേസ് അന്വേഷണവുമായി വന്നിരിക്കുകയാണ്. ലില്ലി ബെർണാഡ് എന്ന പ്രശസ്ത നടി അവരുടെ മുറിയിൽ മരിച്ചു കിടക്കുന്നു. മരണ കാരണം cardiac arrest ആണ്. അത് ഒരു ഹാർട്ട് അറ്റാക്ക് ആണെന്നാണ് പലരും വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നത് എങ്കിലും പല തോന്നലുകൾ ആണ് ഡെറിക് നെ മുന്നോട്ട് നയിച്ചത്. അവരുടെ അമ്മാവൻ മുതൽ കൂട്ടുകാരിയും സഹപ്രവർത്തകരും ഡോക്ടറും അടക്കം പലരെയും ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരെ പോലെ നമുക്കും സംശയം തോന്നുമെങ്കിലും അവസാന പേജുവരെ നമ്മുടെ ആകാംഷ അത് പോലെ നിലനിർത്തുന്നു.
ഇവിടെ കൊലപാതകത്തിൻ്റെ രീതി ആദ്യമേ വ്യക്തമാകുന്നു എങ്കിലും ഒടുവിൽ ആരു എങ്ങിനെ കൊന്നു എന്ന് തെളിഞ്ഞിട്ടും കൊലയാളിയുടെ പേര് അവസാനം മാത്രമേ തുറന്നു പറയുന്നുള്ളൂ.

Poetry killer ഇല് ഡെറിക്നോളം ഇഷ്ടം ആയത് മായയെ ആണ്. അവർ തമ്മിലുള്ള പ്രണയത്തെയും ഇഷ്ടമായി. എന്നാൽ ഈ കേസ് അവസാനിപ്പിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഡറിക്കിന് ഭാര്യയെ ഓർക്കുമ്പോൾ മായയുടെ കാര്യത്തിൽ ഒരു കുറ്റബോധം ഉള്ളത് പോലെ തോന്നി. പോരായ്മകൾ ഒക്കെ ഉള്ള, സ്നേഹം എന്നും ഒരു വീക്നെസ് ആയി കൊണ്ട് നടക്കുന്ന നായകൻ തന്നെ ആണ് ഡെറിക്. അത് ഉൾകൊള്ളാൻ കഴിയാത്തവർ ഉണ്ടാകാം എന്നാലും അത് മാറാതെ ഇരിക്കുന്നതിൽ ഒരു പൂർണത ഉണ്ട്.

I just finished reading Lilly Bernard by Sree Parvathy, a Malayalam crime thriller. From the very first page to the last word, the author sustains an irresistible sense of curiosity, making it almost impossible to put the book down.

I truly enjoyed reading it. Yet, even after closing the book, I find myself thinking about its characters more than the mystery itself.

The protagonist's extramarital relationships keep lingering in my mind. He glorifies them in his own way calling Susanna his life, while describing Maya as the addiction he cannot escape. That contrast stayed with me.

What I keep wondering about, though, is Maya's state of mind. How does someone continue to love a person knowing he will never truly be hers? Knowing that, when it comes down to it, he will always choose someone else over her?

And then there's Lilly, who is also in love with a married man. Perhaps that's the point the novel isn't trying to justify its characters, only to portray them.

Anyway... these are just the thoughts the book left behind.

ഈ കൃതിക്ക് വേണ്ടി ശ്രീപാർവ്വതി നടത്തിയ തയ്യാറെടുപ്പുകളെ അഭിനന്ദിക്കേണ്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു..
ഒരു കാര്യം പുസ്തകം കൂടുതൽ ഇൻ്ററെസ്റ്റിങ് ആക്കാൻ ട്വിസ്റ്റ്കൾ വാരിയേറിയുന്ന ചില സ്ഥിരം ക്ലീഷേ എഴുത്തുകളിൽ നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തമാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം.

ലളിതമായ ഒരു ക്രൈം ഇൻവെസ്റ്റിഗേഷൻ, ത്രില്ലർ ആണെന്നൊന്നും എനിക്ക് അഭിപ്രായമില്ല.

"പോയട്രി കില്ലർ" ആസ്വദിച്ചവർക്ക് ഡെറിക്കിന്റെ ലോകത്തേക്കുള്ള ഈ മടങ്ങിപ്പോക്ക് മടുപ്പിക്കുന്നതല്ല. ത്രില്ലർ എന്ന നിലയിൽ ഡീസന്റാണ് – വലിയ ട്വിസ്റ്റുകൾ ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും അവസാനം വരെ അന്പ്രഡിക്ടബിൾ ആയി നോവൽ മുന്നോട്ട് പോകുന്നു. ഡെറിക് ജോണിന്റെ ആദ്യ അന്വേഷണം വായിച്ചില്ലെങ്കിലും സ്വതന്ത്രമായി ആസ്വദിക്കാവുന്നത് കൂടിയാണ് ലില്ലി ബെർണാഡിന്റെ മികവ്.

ലില്ലി ബെർണാഡ് എന്ന നടിയിലൂടെയാണ് നോവലിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിക്കുന്നത്. ഒരു പുലർച്ചെ മരണപ്പെട്ട രീതിയിൽ ലില്ലിയെ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ഹൃദയാഘാതം എന്ന് തോന്നിക്കുന്ന മരണം – അവിടേക്ക് എത്തുന്ന ഡെറിക് ജോണിന്റെ ശ്രദ്ധയിൽ ഒരു ടാറ്റൂ പെടുന്നു. അതിൽ പന്തികേട് തോന്നിയ ഡെറിക്കിന്റെ അന്വേഷണം പുരോഗമിക്കുമ്പോൾ സംശയത്തിന്റെ വലയത്തിൽ പലരും വരുന്നു. കൊലപാതകത്തിന്റെ രീതി ആദ്യമേ വ്യക്തമാക്കിയെങ്കിലും പിന്നിലുള്ള കരങ്ങൾ അറിയാൻ താളുകൾ മറിച്ചു മുന്നോട്ട് പോകണം. കൊലയാളിയെ അറിയാനുള്ള ആകാംക്ഷ അവസാന അധ്യായം വരെ നിലനിർത്തുന്നതിൽ ശ്രീപാർവതി വിജയിച്ചു.

കൊലയാളി ആരാണെന്ന് എന്ന ആകാംക്ഷ അവസാനം വരെ നിലനിർത്താൻ സാധിച്ചു. ലളിതമായ ഭാഷയിൽ പറഞ്ഞ ഈ കുറ്റാന്വേഷണ കഥ ഒറ്റയിരിപ്പിന് വായിച്ചുതീർക്കാവുന്നതാണ്.
