Kekkaishi #18

Kekkaishi, Vol. 18

By night, teenager Yoshimori Sumimura is a "kekkaishi"--a demon-hunter who specializes in creating magical barriers around his prey. By day, Yoshimori's got other demons to battle: an addiction to sweets and a seriously crotchety grandfather! Yoshimori's pretty neighbor and childhood friend, Tokine Yukimura, is also a kekkaishi, but their families are feuding over who is the true practitioner of the art.

Brother must rely upon brother in a daring escape! So why does Masamori send Yoshimori's friends to spy on him at the Karasumori Site? Then, when a flock of beautiful butterflies descends on Karasumori High School, all the students are in peril... How can Yoshimori single-handedly battle thousands of tiny ayakashi without harming the people in their midst?

Sumimura and Yukimura that are conflicting cooperate to kill the Ayakashi that effect for normal people. Four-corner formation that four of people of Sumimura and Yukimura did was interesting! It’s rare to see their cooperation! Also, the relationship between Yoshimori and Masamori seems to be better. But Masamori is still mysterious because he might have another secret.

Kekkaishi, Vol. 18 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next ten chapters (165–174) of the on-going manga series.

As Yoshimori Sumimura enters ninth grade, the Shadow Organization enrolls Night Troopers Shū Akitsu and Sen Kagemiya at Karasumori School to monitor the Kekkaishi Guardians. Secretly, Shū is studying to develop his telepathic powers and possibly abandon the Night Troops.

One day, an ayakashi in the form of a tiny black butterfly enters the school grounds and quickly multiplies – exponentially. Despite Yoshimori and his colleagues' desperate efforts to terminate it and its offspring – they keep multiplying. Soon the school is engulfed in a cloud of talking butterflies who warn of impending doom and begins to attack students.

Eventually, Shigemori Sumimura, Yoshimori's grandfather and Tokine Yukimura, Tokine's grandmother rushes to their grandchildren's aid. For the first time, all four Kekkaishi heirs will stand and fight together. Together, the quartet pitches a huge cubic kekkai to envelop the mass of butterflies – a desperate attempt to save hundreds of lives of the innocent students.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Yellow Tanabe. A new school year has begun and things surrounding the Karasumori site are intensifying, so much so that the Shadow Organization has sent not one, but two operatives in Shū Akitsu and Sen Kagemiya to become undercover students. The ayakashi are getting stronger and more difficult to defeat – this time it took not only Yoshimori Sumimura and Tokine Yukimura, but their grandparents too.

All in all, Kekkaishi, Vol. 18 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

So we get the new status quo with Sen and Shu from the Night Troops are ordered to keep on eye on Karasumori in a similar way to what Gen did but instead on helping Yoshimori and Tokine they are their to spy on them to figure out more about the clans and their relationship to Karasumori. We also learn more about Sen and his background. The next arc with the butterflies is so far pretty cool and I do like it deviates a little from the previous ones as it is not happening at night but in the middle of the day giving the heroes a sense of urgency as the butterflies keep swarming.

1. Sen kelihatan keren banget. Suka sama kemampuannya.
2. Aku mungkin nge-ship Masamori sama the bob-haired girl.
3. Kerja sama empat pewaris sah.

-
