Joy Gardner, author of The New Healing Yourself, offers a great text about natural remedies during pregnancy and labor. Starting with preconception (including natural ways of regulating ovulation) through all the common complaints of pregnancy, Gardner offers ways of preventing problems, as well as curing them. She recommends herbal and natural cures for problems including -swelling of hands and feet -the common cold -varicose veins -frequent urination -infections Even if you're not completely into natural remedies, this is a useful book because it explores how to cure yourself if the drug you would normally take is dangerous during pregnancy. A great primer and resource to have around.
This book had a great deal of practical information on natural remedies during pregnancy, as well as detailed lists and recipes for good nutrition for both pregnant and nursing mothers. I would say the first half, which contained this information, was helpful. However, the author is in support of abortion as a choice for mother, she has an entire book on it apparently, and this definitely comes out in her writing. She also has some bizarre thoughts on spiritual matters as well as believing she has hypnotized people to relive their birth experiences. That being said, I wholeheartedly disagreed with much of her life philosophies, and at least once was angered by some of the text. Nevertheless, the nutritional and remedy sections were beneficial and I was able to utilize many of those. I would give this book to be read by a pregnant mother with much emphasis on simply skimming the table of contents and choosing the areas that are focused on physical needs exclusively.
