Ray Eye has written a great comprehensive book on turkey hunting. This book is great for beginner turkey hunters and the more experience turkey hunters will also enjoy it. This book is filled with amazing tips and essentials to becoming the best turkey hunter you can be. Ray talks about the techniques that should be used while scouting for turkeys and calling the bird. Ray goes into great detail on every caller there is; from the box call to the mouth call and all kinds of slate calls.
To Ray turkey hunting isn't a hobby it's a skill that takes time to master. Reading this book really opens your eyes to seeing how a master outdoorsman thinks and how he became so successful. But this book isn't all about the glory's of turkey hunting, Ray really gets his point across by letting people know not ever hunt is going to be a success but enjoy the hunt anyways.
Even though Ray's book was only an informative book, he made it so the book had a theme, and he added a twist to his book, not only did he talk about hunting techniques he built in some stories of his own experiences from his past hunts. Rays theme to Practical Turkey Hunting Strategies is that anyone can hunt with a little help.
I would recommend this book to all turkey hunters in a heart beat, weather they are first starting out or have been hunting for years this book has so much knowledge through its pages. The only problem with this book is I couldn't seem to put it down.

It's alright. It's got a lot of good ideas. It also has a predictably alarmist call to action against "wacko animal rights activists" and proponents of gun laws at the end. No matter the era, it seems, hunters just can't seem to figure out that by voting against "animal rights wackos" like environmental conservationists, they usher in the destruction of the natural lands that they rely on for healthy hunting animal populations by electing people who don't give a crap about public access rights and would rather see the woodlot as a potential strip mall instead of a natural area for the benefit of all.

It's not particularly in-depth regarding the biology and ecology of the turkey, but then again the book promises "Practical Strategies," and it does provide a number of those. But I was kind of hoping it might tell me some things about what turkeys eat at different times of the year, or what they do as the season winds down, what kind of habitat they relate to in different parts of the country, etc. to help me better figure out the terrain. There are some incidental facts here and there of that nature, but it's definitely not the focus of the book. It's all well and good to say "Go out and check the roosts at night, go spot the birds in the off-season, go walk the soles off of your boots, etc.", but the fact is that a lot of us have to travel some distance to get to the hunting grounds and have limited vacation days and weekends to get our scouting done and devote a few days to the pursuit each year. I was hoping the book might help me do my scouting more intelligently by telling me more about the turkeys themselves, but the focus wasn't really on that aspect of things.
