Let me be clear before I write this review. Prof Alice Robert’s is brilliant. Shes an amazing archeologist, historian and artist. I’ve been a fan since her ‘Time Team’ days. ‘Coast’, ‘Digging for Britain’, she’s a fantastic presenter who brings history to us all in a clear and accessible way. I’ve even seen her talk live. So it pains me greatly to only give this book 2 and a half stars.
Buried is a deep dive in the first millennia of British history via a series of unique burial grounds, graves, tombs and the like. The chapters break apart the who, why and when of each specific happening in an attempt to further our understanding of our ancestors and their funerary rites. It’s very interesting stuff!. Prof Alice brings her wealth of knowledge with her, adding layers of extra detail and depth. For me as a fan of ancient burial history, tombs and funerary rites I was ready for an engrossing read.
Sadly, it wasn’t what I’d hoped for. My issues are thus. The book wanders, a lot. A burial that begins a chapter becomes so lost in speculation, what ifs, could be’s and maybes that by the end I wasn’t sure about the burial I began reading about. By the end chapter, Robert’s dives into linguistics between Briton, Anglo Saxons, Romans and other ancient societies, this deep dive is so deep that I’d lost all knowledge of what I’d previously read, the skeletons that had began the chapter had disappeared. I feel the focus on the burials had been lost.
Unfortunately the book is a slog, (it’s taken me a year to get through) it dithers and meanders too much. The book could have been half the size, and said just as much. While I completely understand that simplifying history is tricky, if not dangerous, I’m sure there was a better way at going about these subjects than bombarding me with so much info that I lost all energy for the read. I wanted to be in the trench with the archeologists, not in a class room.
Watch Alice’s tv work, it’s all amazing. Be ready for ALOT of extra work if you read this book. It has some great bits, but they are swamped by pages and pages of extra content that did little for me at all.
Sorry 😬
