Lived To Tell: Thriving After Suicide Attempt

Rate this book
Kay Whiting Harrison shares her personal journey through the twists and turns, triumphs, and tragedies of her life as she secretly struggles with a mental illness. She copes with a severe and terminal disability of one child, a life-threatening illness with another, financial pressures, and other life challenges while trying to keep the demons of depression and anxiety at bay and hidden from the rest of the world. Despite being a competent wife, mother, businesswoman, and community leader, mounting tensions and mental illness eventually led her to try to take her own life. She shares her initial disappointment at surviving. As a perfectionist, surviving was not in her plan. Yet, not only did she survive, much to her own surprise, she transformed from being ashamed and hiding her struggles to becoming an outspoken advocate, sharing her personal experiences with others to let them know that not only is it okay to talk about your mental health but it’s essential - and in some cases, life-saving!

This memoir/biography is raw, real, and vulnerable. It takes you on a journey that is both relatable and riveting, as it describes the human problems many of us face and how coping with them can be exacerbated when besieged by a mental illness. This story will hold your attention, capture your heart and inspire you to have hope that healing and recovery are not only possible but inevitable - once the courage is summoned to open up and seek support and treatment.

So, Kay hit it out of the park with her new book, “Thriving After Suicide.” Reading this book becomes an emotional experience, but then turns to joy when on realizes that life can be good, in fact wonderful even after an awful experience when one pursues the right course of action. There is loads of self-help in this book for anyone struggling with depression. We wish Kay all the best.

This was such a great book. I would recommend it for anyone who is suffering from mental illness or who has a loved one who is ill. It was a relief to be able to relate my own inner thoughts, struggles and turmoils to someone else whom I have such a high regard for. That being said, it took me a while to get through the book as it was very heavy emotionally at some points. Take whatever time you need, but please read the book.

There are also many resources in the back for those who need some extra help. I’m so glad that Kay had the courage to share her story and for giving a voice to the unseen challenges that many of us face today.

I enjoyed reading her spouse's experience of her suicide attempt and understanding his perspective. I l loved that Kay included tons of resources for those who may be in need. The book itself was poorly written imo. Finished, but had to force myself to.

I'm so glad I heard about this book! It was written by a woman from my hometown, and after reading her story, I have such an appreciation for her experiences and challenges. If this book helps even one person in their battle with depression (or other debilitating trials) it will be a success!
