Negotiating the New Normal: How India Must Grow in a Pandemic-Ridden World

Rate this book
‘Growth is Dead. Long Live Growth.’

The world economy was still reeling from the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 when the COVID-19 pandemic struck like a bolt of lightning in late 2019. Whatever remained of the neoliberal credo – based on the salience of free markets – was upended, and economic nationalism fast became the new stock ideology.

In Negotiating the New Normal, Saurav Jha clinically examines why, in the wake of the coronavirus shock, strong economic recovery in the developed world is more doubtful than ever. Instead of throwing its weight behind a multipolar world order, China, by far the largest economy among the BRICS nations, has chosen to create a Pax Sinica. However, it is unlikely to make much headway owing to both internal economic contradictions and pushback from the West and beyond. And what of India? Can it become a ‘new China’ to serve as a key engine of global growth, overcoming the pandemic-induced setback as well as earlier policy missteps like demonetization?

Answering all these questions and raising many more, Jha’s deeply researched and cogently argued account examines the ‘new normal’ of a transactional, even predatory geo-economic climate where central banks are fast running out of answers and heavily indebted governments are desperately searching for silver bullets. This work of extraordinary depth and ambition, tracing the destinies of the major economic centres of the world, provides a nuanced, if sobering, context to the reader as it suggests what India must do to rise in this grave, new pandemic-ridden world.

The world economy was changing, constantly evolving and was still reeling from the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 when the Covid-19 struck like a thunderbolt, leaving everything in haywire. It left both the threat and threatened is a messy puddle of economic recession. Whatever remained of the neoliberal credo based on free markets was upended and economic nationalism fast became the new stock ideology. As this book goes through the major economic areas of the world namely US, China, European Union and Japan it investigates deep into these economic hubs to better understand the impact of Covid-19 in economic front and how the developed nations quickly recovered from the crisis.

In this book the author has delved deeper into the creeks and nooks of global economy backed with extensive research on the subject to give valuable insights on how strong recovery is possible from the trying situations and what India can adopt to overcome the setbacks and return into the global economy as a keystone country. This book is an in-depth analysis on the geo-economic politics that has been practiced over the world. Economics is not my area of expertise but I have keen interest to know and understand it. This book gave me the perfect opportunity to explore this region more. Not only it expanded my vocabulary it introduced me to this unique area of economic and financial terminologies. It never hurts to learn new things and I'm always open to learn new things. This book showed me yet another side of the pandemic-ridden world.

The writing though is not at all easy and lucid, it requires economic and financial knowledge and maybe a little bit of patience to fully comprehend the gravity of the context. The writing style has fluidity but it can be boring sometimes yet it has powerful information to consider. This book will expand your knowledge on current affairs. Good for intermediate and advanced readers.

✨The book as the title suggests deals with how the country and the world is coping with the pandemic and how what is normal has changed due to the enormous change in circumstances.

✨The book deals with many pandemic related issues from a larger perspective as well while taking into account other countries and international organisations too.

✨The book was informative but it did not have much substance into it, stating some very obvious facts as well.

✨The book while having a nice store of facts, showing a good amount of research, the presentation of the book didn't seem much appealing and felt too plain to read at points.

✨Overall it was a good and informative read :)

Negotiating the new Normal is a non fiction book which talks about how the world economy was hit due to the pandemic. The author discusses about the de isions taken by the Governments of different countries. He further goes on to analyze if it was a boon or a curse to India. Further he questions, if India can be the next China, a country which holds the largest economy among the BRICS nations, and highlights the steps taken by them to tackle the economical crisis they faces.

The book has been well researched and the facts are being laid out clearly for the common man to understand. A set of questions that the author has answered, throws light on the geo-economical problems. As we turn page after page we discover how organisations such as BRICS and ASEAN were formed. The author has suggested a few steps for India, to overcome this situation.

The foot notes explaining the meaning of certain terms makes it easier for a non economic person to read and understand. Overall a good informatiove book for the future economists....

After completing a few entertaining reads, I was looking for some serious stuff and that's when I came across this book that talks about how we are living in an era where post pandemic impacts especially on the economy is something we have to get to terms with.

The author in this work analyses on the back of deep research that how different nations have recuperated with the effects of COVID. How not only the developing nations but also developed ones have got a monumental setback. There are few imposing questions too that author has asked like whether Bharat can be the new China? And has left it on the readers to opine.

The book certainly is a useful read for people who want to know about how a disaster can change the course of life for most people . Though there has been usage of some jargons and author hasn't tried to explain its meaning too so it proves to be a complex read for someone who has no background in economics.

Overall an informative read nevertheless that could have been simplified .

NEGOTIATING THE NEW NORMAL By Saurav Jha

While the world is still reeling from the Financial crisis in 2008, we are now faced with another as the world was struck with the pandemic in 2019.

😊What i liked -

✔ It gives a detailed review on how the world fared before the pandemic and how it is faring after.
✔ I am not an economics student nor have I ever been interested in economics before, but the author sucked me in with his  detailed explanation.
✔ It is a really well researched book.
✔ I liked how the author has given ways that we can emerge from the crisis and get things back to or  near normal. (the new normal)

🤔What could have been better -

✔ I wouldn't say it was easy for me to understand as I am not well versed with the economic terms and had to go and google a few things.

📚Who Should read :

🤓Financial Aficionados

The coronavirus brings that gust of wind which has changed the direction of the global thrift.

Negotiating the new normal is a multifaceted book that reveals a clear picture of the new normal to which we have adjusted & the consequences and opportunities that we have gotten after the coronavirus pandemic.

in this book, the author has discussed, how this pandemic was different than the great depression of 1939.

We have seen jobs losses, science & tech, healthcare increased oil prices, civil war and Many small countries & businesses went into bankruptcy.

Thou pandemic reduced our growth but the recent political shiftings has also opened some good opportunities for developing countries like India.

The trade war between China and USA & tremendous growth in the IT sector opened a new gap to be filled.

The author has a brilliant understanding of global politics & economics.

If you love reading nonfiction then I'm sure you will like this as well.

Negotiating the New Normal: How India Must Grow in a Pandemic-Ridden World by author Saurav Jha is a book of non-fiction, specifically lying within the political-economic genre.

I wouldn't classify this as an easy read by any means; it needed constant checking of facts and definitions to understand even some of the basic references, like referring to China as creating a "Pax Sinica" or the concept of neoliberalism, etc. Additionally, the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 is heavily referenced, and various countries and their behaviors are cross-examined(—an event that was summarized in my civics books within a paragraph or two🙁). To his credit, the author has provided extensive footnotes and references on each page (on several pages, the footnotes make up more that half the page's content). The author mentioned that this has been a work of six years, and that truly is visible in this content.

When dealing with country-specific events, the author titled the sections with a name that alluded to something the country is or was known for, such as "The Makings of Greek Tragedy"(who hasn't heard of Greek tragedies?😁), or for Japan, it was "Fukoku Kyohei," meaning "enrich the state, strengthen the military", which was the Japan's Meiji government's policy. A different segment was titled "Eating dinner during lunch". It provided some comedic relief to an otherwise heavy text. I also liked how the author used real-life stories as a segue to his discourse, like presenting a story of Brooklyn resident Josiah to lead into the US Senate's CARES Act or the Satana, Maharashtra's (a state in India) railway accident, to highlight the impact of the "stay in place" lockdown on Indian migrant workers.

I struggled with separating facts and actual events from the author's commentary and opinions. Like one of the points he brought forth was that pandemic era trends are not new but have been in the making since at least the 2008 crisis. I was not sufficiently educated on the underlying themes to agree or disagree with the author. Regardless, this served as a great, great opportunity to learn about a lot of things happening all over the world.

Review:

This book was a good one, I loved reading this it had a different feel unlike other non fiction books that make me feel bored, instead I felt intrigued. The book talks about the aftermath of the pandemic called covid that has brought our already fragile economy to it's knees and the recovery measures to take.

In the new world full of medical debts, family loses, economy decline, rupee value decline and many other problems the author Saurav Jha has laid out a few measures and clear cut plans for the economical development of the country as a whole! When people weren't yet recovered from the 2008 economical crisis, then the currency change in the later years and then covid19 dropped like a bomb on the economy of nations pulling some countries to under-developed state! This book was an entirely new kind of genre for me but it never hurts to learn something new and this book did just that, I was an economics student at high school and so I could understand many of the things that Saurav Jha had written! This book is a treasure trove of knowledge that people should read and adapt to to switch their economic and financial issues.

The book is definitely for financial geeks and economical geeks, others would benefit from reading but only if they have patience to push through! The language is suitable for people who know about finance and economy, the book is steady and focused on its goal of getting into the new normal.

Negotiating the New Normal by Saurav Jha is a book about the impact of pandemic on economic growth.

After reading just a few pages of the book, I asked myself, did the growth really stopped in 2020 or was it only affected?

It starts with USA's GFC recession. It talks about how people were given hope to get some money in lockdown and how it was fulfilled too. Most importantly however the statistics shown in every chapter. In US, the inflation had started much before the Pandemic. when 78% Americans lived from paycheck to paycheck!

I was a little disappointed to see that it was all about USA... But as the chapters continued, we had India too! India's financial condition, impact of pandemic and most importantly, everything is based on facts. You can even cross check them.

What I liked about this book:
~cover
~footnotes
~information
~writing style is simple and to the point
What I didn't like about this book:
~The book could have been made more engaging for people who are not too interested in economics

I recommend it to all the people with keen interest in economics!

I read this book sometime back, I had so many things to write but due to certain reasons I couldn't. This book to me is a detailed researched book which needs to be read by all for the better understanding of our economy.

Cover: Aptly designed. I have the hardcover, which I found very practically designed.

About the Book: There had been a lot of change since the Pandemic had hit us in 2020, the world had completely changed. The book has detailed study about the other economies as well. The suggestions, ideas and how India must grow had been widely covered with very good examples and situations. The author had indeed given his 100% to the book.

Language: Easy to read and interpret.

Covid no doubt has changed lives of many... Families lost their people, their jobs. Careers spoilt for many so does the lives... And the economy of entire world shaken.

In this book, author tried to cover all major portions covering the economy changes after covid 19.
Book covers the International Relations, and impact on India majorly. Impact on small businesses and start ups.

I highly appreciate the research work, author has done.
I love the writing pattern of book.
But i couldn't find it as an ideal read for me... I had zero knowledge of economics and it was a difficult read for me.
From very first page, I had to seek help from Google and my brother.
So I recommend this book to readers who have knowledge and intrest in economics.

After the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, the world economy was still reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic when the world economy underwent a rapid economic nationalist turn in late 2019.

Whatever remained of the neoliberal credo - based on the salience of free markets - was upended, and economic nationalism became the new stock ideology.

The book Negotiating the New Normal, written by Saurav Jha, examines why strong economic recovery in the developed world is now less likely than ever.

Instead of throwing its weight behind a multipolar world order, China, the largest economy among the BRICS nations, has forged a Pax Sinica.

However, regardless of internal economic contradictions and pushback from the West and beyond, China is unlikely to achieve much success.

India, can it become a 'new China' to serve as a key engine of global growth by overcoming the pandemic-induced setback as well as earlier policy missteps like demonetisation?

Overall I recommend this book to all.

Maybe the pandemic has gone, but its effects have been persistent, and we all seem to face it. Part by part, sector by sector, we all know that not everything is back to its normal. All the people who lost their jobs are yet to be placed. The pace with which the employment was going on has shrunk a bit, if not completely the culture of the whole working sector has changed with permanent introduction of facilities like work from home etc. cutting down costs of the company on a drastic level. A few mandates and regulations still work in the west, and some sectors still require the mask to be worn. Well it seems that this is the new normal. Keeping aside everything, what do we most look into? Well that's India, our own country. How are we dealing with it, and what we should do to come out of all the after pandemic world. Well, the answer is Saurav Jha’s Book - Negotiating the new normal. A book which is compiled with all the effects and causes of the pandemic even talks about the solutions to it. It discusses how India as a whole should work to get out of the pandemic ridden nation. The author’s writing does show how diligently he has worked on finding the actual facts about the real ground situations, these situations range from pandemic to post-pandemic times. Saurav Jha has written well on how the western states are settling for themselves after the current situation and how these worked before the pandemic.Well the usual contribution is always India and the top economies, because we as a nation are the ones always in the race to prove ourselves that we are a super power. Well this comparison by the author not only answers the raised question of the country’s growth with respect to the western world, but clears the air on the questions like how, when etc! If we had to talk about what you gain after reading this book? Well the answer is simple and clear, you get an idea of what was before, and what is now! What should be done and what's going on! The ambitions of the country and the possibilities of it achieving those, and the obstacles in the path of completion of the goal. Saurva Jha, has mentioned a lot! Right from taking references from the governors statement, to the financial stability reports! Well the research has shown its result. Staying a bit different from normal books which discuss about economy etc, wherein the content is labelled with the subtitles of each new chapter starts with only a number. For sure this helps in keeping the flow with the topic! The flow keeps you intact about what got destroyed due to the pandemic, who actually suffered in it, how common people had to pay the price and now when it's over, how the problem of the post pandemic havoc must be tackled, to find a pathway on the road of growth. Along with all these things the author has well analysed the current situation and the data available to predict what likely can take place in the future, or simply to say what we all should be ready for. To summarise all the things that the book tells in a sentence, it would be - A well compiled book, with thorough research, perfect finding, analysis and better suggestions to enact! When we run through the other aspects of the book, in terms of how easy the book is to read and references, the book is up to the mark. The ease of understanding for anyone with the ability to read English is achieved for sure, the words put forward are easy to comprehend, and don’t make you think about its application. Just one thing, that the people who are quite knowledgeable about all the scenarios and economic conditions may find it once read in terms of all the actions that have happened since the pandemic struck! But nevertheless, it's a better option to read about the pandemic and its causes. Saurav Jha, has written a great one, with all the potions mixed well.

Wounds of Global Economic Crisis of 2008 were still afresh when COVID struck. The pandemic affected almost every existing aspect of life. Global & National Economy beared a big blow. It suffered a major setback during the crisis. There was a great economic recession. Subsequent lockdowns had forced the economies to come to a halt. Even till date World economy has not gone back to what it was during pre-Covid period. It is in recovery phase and will take time (nothing happens over nigjt in economics). Jo biden says Covid-19 pandemic is over. Is it really?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Indian Economy not remained untouched from its impact. India’s GDP shrank 7.3% in 2020-21. This was the worst performance of the Indian economy in any year since independence. Negotiating The New Normal throws light on this and many more related aspects. It analyse the Great Recession of 2009 in the beginning and how the world dealt with it with major focus on big economic powers of recent times viz USA, EU, China & Japan. How India comes into the larger picture in the same context and can play a vital role in the pandemic-ridden world marks the rest of the book.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This is not one of those books which you finish in one go or within a week and get the most of it. This has to be read with with proper concentration (same as the subject of economics 😅). An iota of diversion and the next page refuses to come in grasp or worse no grasp at all. References given at the bottom of pages shows the immense amount of research work author has gone through. However, i felt that it would be better if references were given in the end of the book instead of each page. They appears as to be breaking the flow between flipping the page and continuing with the 'main content' (some even acquires more than half of the page). The book is not for those who are in the process of getting familiar with economics. It would be better if one masters some basic knowledge of economics before beginning NTN² to get its complete essence. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
If you've a keen interest in Economics, Geoeconomics, Geopolitics and International Relations then you can go for this one.⁣⁣

It’s not new to the world that being economically weak at times. The western world was still recovering from the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2007-2008, a pandemic-induced recession. Every now and then there is a perceived shift in influence from West to East. After the COVID-19 pandemic, world is not the same and still the progress is ongoing to get back the normal economy. But why is that the strong economic recovery in the developed world is more doubtful than ever this time is the examination by the author here.

This book is in a detailed account of financial records and laws the author examines the reason behind it. Beyond all the circumstances, the author has done a complete research that can India able to serve for the global growth as like china, a largest economy among the BRICKS nations.

This work of answering by in-depth analysations, tracing the destinies of the major economic centers of the world which in turn provides a clarity in the readers about what India must do to arise in this pandemic ridden world. This book gave a navigation of geopolitics and geo-economics in this era.

It mainly focuses on the four economics area of the world (the US, the European Union, China and Japan) along with the characters of central banks, governments and corporations and some Individuals featuring now and then. India must continue to grow in with its own strategy. On the whole, India need more democracy and the political class will have to be checked if India wants to take its rightful path in the new world.

Well trained in economics with a deep research and analysis, the author has done a great job to give an adequate knowledge about the world economy and especially what India must to adapt to this new normal. Growth is inevitable but how is that happening is this point. The author has taken a great effort in writing this book efficiently to describe the status of the world economy in the post Covid and especially how India emerges from the pandemic, and also shared his views that what need to be done in the new normal. It will be so helpful to the Individuals or students who are interested in economics.

Happy reading and learning!

'Keiretsu' group is a network of cross-holdings between companies in different sectors backed by a Core Bank, Insurance and Real Estate firms. This system was a modernised model of old 'Zaibatsu' system(family owned businesses of scale) and famous zaibatsu's we all know were. Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Yasuda etc.

Keiretsu model is the core principle for Japan's rising economy since 19th century. This model proved to be revolutionary for the stakeholders involved and in the macro scale to the entire Japan's economy. But as the oil shock of 1973 hit the world Japan too felt the burnt, as till then it was highly depended on manufacturing and exports. With the new energy crisis and already looming labour market crisis Japan had to turn around from it's age old strategies leading to slow-growth for coming decades. And then arrives Covid, at a time when japan was facing a demography dividend crisis. That's the story of japan's economy in short.

Thanks to Saurav Jha for bringing this book and i was fascinated by the japanese growth model for quite few years but couldn't find a consolidated source to chew on, other than few case studies on keiretsu, demography dividend and the historical importance of japan in world wars.

'Negotiating the New Normal' gives a brief account of top 4 economies of the world namely US, EU, China & Japan from historical perspective to economic and international relations of the recent past until Covid hit and hereabouts.

As rightly mentioned in the book, the developed countries are reeling under high pressure to recover from this new found crisis as the so called developed economies were facing slow growth and low inflation which was a tricky situation to be in. On the other hand developing countries though were growing at a decent pace pre-pandemic were depend on the west and global supply chains which eventually slowed their growth as well.

Geography, demography, history and major economic decisions were all differentiating factors for the growth of a country. Analysing them takes a wider perspective than just go by the issue in hand. Also too many stats from economic point of view in the start were little too dry for me to digest.

Congratulations to the author Saurav Jha for writing an powerful book which will not only keep you hooked till the last page, but also force you towards deep thinking. I really loved the way author has designed the book. The book came to me with a special packet. The cover page illustration is beautiful and contextual. This book is extremely well researched and fact based. It's relatively easier to compare and see where we stand in this pandemic ridden world with the help of it. It's questions like, what can we do to make it better, that are the key initiative and working towards them to achieve our goal.In this book, the author has described about the social and economical impact the world has faced after getting strikes by Covid-19. It also tells that how Covid-19 has affected humans not just physically but also mentally.

It brings out the contrast where the US and EU are struggling to improve their aggregate supply, you have on the other hand, first Japan and then China struggling to improve aggregate demand by way of increased share of consumption. These are the direct results of the paths of industrialization both these countries took. US and EU, meanwhile with large amount of total debt need to find ways to exit un-conventional monetary policies that were introduced post GFC. They are stuck where return to normal monetary policies seems highly difficult.

A well researched and well presented insight into the economy that is definitely not an easy read if entering blindly into this non-fiction, so it's only better to get a hold of the current affairs and the political situations before delving into this book. It's a deep work that discusses what India must do to survive and grow in the post-pandemic world.

With all this Covid 19 thing we faced and now that it has all been gone, we are finally getting back on track,
Well are we really?

When the economic world was already struggling from the Global Financial Crisis of 2008; is just when it badly gets hit by Covid 19 pandemic in late 2019 and then the rest is history.

This is exact how the book begins with a slight summary of what was the actual scenario of the world economy prior to pandemic situation and then later how Covid 19 made it all worse. Firstly it talks about past scenarios of four major economic regions - US, EU, China and Japan with detailed account on financial records and laws, what measures were taken to recover from the loses and what was expected to boost up their growth at that point of time and finally what exactly lead them to their current economic position. In detail it cover huge portion, almost everything talking about different geo-economic problems, organizations like ASEAN and BRICS, Taiwan manipulation, Japan crisis and how it dealt with it, US and EU struggling from aggregate supply along with its financial debt situation and then finally the author analysis the current situation of Indian economics and how potentially India can leverage its current state.

This book is definitely among those very few detailed and well researched one which purely talks about the technical terms yet do not fail to keep you engaged. No doubt there's these few terms which takes to much of understanding and takes a lot to just be on track; even I struggled few a times but it is all worth a read as it is full of in-depth knowledge and research analysis. Also I would specially like to mention about the book cover and the paper quality it had as it really helped a lot in giving a pleasant reading experience.

It is sure shot a Go-through book but if you are into economics and find all this interesting then it is a MUST READ for you all!!

Global Financial Crisis was a worldwide crisis which has occured in the early 21st century and was a very hard time for all the country, which has completely damaged and shaken the worldwide economical structure in the year 2008. All the nation's were still trying to overcome with their biggest loss when the covid 19 pandemic break out, which was the very challenging time for the whole world, whether it was a super power nations or countries like India. People has not only lost their dear ones but their well established works too.

Negotiating the new normal by Saurav Jha is the well researched book discussing about the effects of post Global Financial Crisis - 2008 period to the Covid -19 pandemic, which has  affected the whole global economy. How the nations has dealt with the crisis and how the nations all over the globe has tried to maintain their economic stability back to the normal.

The book is written in eight chapters, excluding Introduction and Conclusion. Each and every chapters is detailed and discusses about the issue very deeply. This book is written in quite a easy language but it's hard to understand for people like me, who have a very little knowledge about economy.

Author has explained various term throughout the book wherever necessary at the end of the page but still it was kinda hard for me to process all those things.

It was my first time reading something different from what I usually read ie: biographies, memoir, poetry, non fiction and fiction.

This book is indeed full of lot of information about economical things. I learnt about BRICS, GFC and many more things. This is not a normal book to be read in just 3-4 hours or a week. Well I'm not saying this because of books length or number of pages but due to knowledge it holds and it's better to read it in small parts with a cool mind, otherwise you're not gonna get the N of Normal.

"Pandemic" is not a new word altogether to the human race. Our species has been repeatedly hit by various pandemics & epidemics as well but nothing has so far stood in the way of mankind's progress. These are some of the disastrous pandemic & epidemics that have occurred on earth :- Black Death(1300), Spanish Flu(1918-20), Plague of Justinian (540), Mexican Smallpox (1520), Russian typhus epidemic (1918-22) ,COVID-19 pandemic etc. These calamities that occurred at different times have affected people's lives terribly. These incidents over the time not only created difficulties in life but millions of lives have been compromised through these events.
The recent COVID-19 pandemic has deeply spread a lot of adverse effects from social, political, regional to economical aspect of life. This pandemic has raised the financial discrimination among people to the extreme. Due to various reasons, India's economic situation was not very favorable even in the pre-corona situation, right after that, the evil effects of Corona came down on India and the World as well.At a time when India is trying to improve it's GDP and gain a respectable place in the global economical rankings, will its dream come true after the impact of COVID-19!! The author has explicitly elaborated his fine thoughts on the post COVID-19 era & a kind of roadmap towards India's success. The burden of high inflation, excessive money flow in the market caused a lot of difficulties. Author has tried to address every possible aspects that includes geo-politics & global economical understandings and answered some essential questions through his perception.
In a nutshell, I think we should read such books more often, it's not heavily packed with dry informations as I found the writing quite crisp. You just need to analyse his thoughts. The writing style is quite commendable & lucid. I would love to recommend this book to others.

The book “Negotiating the New Normal: How India Must Grow in a Pandemic-Ridden World” written by Saurav Jha delves into the aftermath of Covid-19 that has led to the tumbling of the global economy. Can India act as a savior in these difficult tumultuous times and be a key engine of global growth and prosperity, leading the world into this new normal. Saurav has done an immaculate job in the research which is showcased through this book and will make the readers understand the brevity of the situation and how the road lies ahead for us. Environmental sustainability is equally important especially in light of India’s commitment to transition fully to a net-zero economy by the year 2070. The book attempts to show that pandemic-era trends are not really that new at all, but have been in the making for a long time now. The pandemic has only served to accelerate these trends which for better or worse will hold sway over the lives of Earth’s inhabitants for the foreseeable future.

In this pandemic-ridden world, India must continue to grow and this is the right time for the nation to come up with its own strategy for inclusive prosperity in the coming decade at least for the Indian Oceanic region. As the book ends on a note of caution that the challenge for India going forward would be to sharpen its democratic moho rather than succumb to authoritarian temptations. India needs more democracy and not less. The current trend of social disharmony, endangered by the extant political class will have to be checked if India has to take its rightful place in the new world order. As all eyes are clearly set on India to see if it can overcome its challenges and deliver on its potential. This book will enhance your knowledge about the current economic situation. Readers who enjoy reading books that revolve around the subjects of economy and geopolitical will find it quite interesting and informative.

Any natural body strives to reach a state of homeostasis, our high school zoology teacher once told us. Quite wisely.

Homeostasis (noun).
the inclination toward a comparatively stable balance between interdependent elements.

Just shift your eyes to the world economics for once. The struggle to attain a sense of homeostasis is ever present, and gets more and more ridiculous with every passing decade.

And depending on your tastes, ridiculously thrilling and entertaining.

The world's a stage, all the men and women merely players. Or so ol' Shakespeare said this one time, hundreds of years ago.

The beauty about our ol' Shakey, which seldom ceases to amaze, is that he just keeps getting more and more relevant with time. And so 'tis, the world an evknomcy stage and all nations playing a game of thrones amidst themselves.

Oh, and losing all the while.

If rising unemployment, increasing inflation, growing debts, nationalistic/conservative politics that inadvertently trickles down into economics wasn't enough, there came pandemic jogging down the street, taking the house of facades down in one blow.

And it was all clear, what was being slowly made clear over the past few decades, that the world is no more a uni- or a bipolar street. The players are too many, and the powers that once were have weakened.

Down through this multi-jugular, multi-national lanes of global economics then, we pass through America, Europe, China, Japan, and finally resting on India. But of course. How does India play into this new normal, this new multipolar, unpredictable crossroads of a mess (albeit a beautiful one at that)?

Jog alongside the book, immerse yourself in it, and you shall come out somewhat wiser, somewhat baffled too. Depending on your tastes or appetite for adventure, it's going to be one hell of a journey!

See ya on the other side?

Book Name -: Negotiating The New Normal
Writer -: Saurav Jha
Genre - Non fiction

Blurb -: In Negotiating the New Normal, Saurav Jha clinically examines why, in the wake of the coronavirus shock, strong economic recovery in the developed world is more doubtful than ever.

Things I liked -:

1. Writer has talked about different phases throught which India has gone throught during the crisis in a very detailed way. You'll understand how India recovered from its economical crisis too while fighting the pandemic. All these concepts were straightforward putted into the story which will give you an in-depth information.

2. The author has also tried to make us understand many common thinkings & ideas which many of us were having during the pandemic. Not only that the author has tried to give his put the solutions in form of his opinions too in the book.

3. The narration was pretty smooth as i didn't found the book ever a bit confusing while reading & also i loved the way author has tried to give an insight detailed solution about the crisis which we might have never known.

4. The language used was easy. But it might be hard for some new readers but overall a very simple language presentation.

Final Thoughts -: Overall I'll say this is a great book to know about our Country's situation when the pandemic was on the rise. Loved the presentation of the all the thoughts of the author too. The book was very informative for me as i got to know about a lot of new things too. So I'll say it's worth the time.

The impact of the coronavirus pandemic on India has been largely disruptive in terms of economic activity as well as a loss of human lives. Almost all the sectors have been adversely affected as domestic demand and exports sharply plummeted with some notable exceptions where high growth was observed. Since agriculture is the backbone of the country and a part of the government-announced essential category, the impact is likely to be low on both primary agricultural production and the usage of agro-inputs. Given the scale of disruption caused by the pandemic, it is evident that the current downturn is fundamentally different from recessions. The sudden shrinkage in demand & increased unemployment is going to alter the business landscape.

Negotiating the New Normal: How India Must Grow in a Pandemic-Ridden World by Saurav Jha scrutinizes why, in the stir of the coronavirus blow, strapping economic recovery in the developed world is more uncertain than ever. Will post-Pandemic India become the New China and surge rise to the world as one of the strongest economies? The book answers this and many other questions which are profoundly researched and logically argued. The book in detail discusses the world economies and also their impact on India.

With easy-to-understand language, the author has done a creditable job with the book. But yes this book is not certainly for a layman who doesn’t follow economics’ and particularly world economics with politics. Terma like BRICS, Pax Sinica, FTSE, COCOM, PBOC, TWFYP, LGFV and many alike are often used and there is quite a possibility that the common man cannot understand it.

Overall a fantastic and serious read in the economic section of books and students of economics and people who work in the economic departments should certainly read it.

The world is still reeling from the aftermath of the pandemic –COVID -19 and almost all sectors are still struggling to gain back their foothold. The world economy was already struggling to get a grip after the Global Financial crisis of 2008 and just when things seemed to go back to normal the pandemic struck plunging it into a deeper shock!

In this book, the author analyses and traces the destiny of the world’s major economic centres and how the developed world will find it harder to recover.

The extent of the author’s research on this topic is evident in how well he brings out the pointers with the help of the various data and also explains and also points out the reasons behind the economic /financial records of the nations. He elaborates on the impact the major economic centres will have on India and mentions the areas of problem. He has also given some ways to overcome the situations.

I am new to this topic so I read it in instalments and as I went through I was able to grasp the major pointers and get a better understanding of the subject. There were a lot of terms and abbreviations that were very new but the author has explained them and I was able to have a basic understanding of those terms. For me, this was not a book that could be read in a single sitting. But if you are knowledgeable in this subject, it will be a very good read.

There are plenty of references in the footnote section on each page that you can look up to broaden your understanding of the topic. This further emphasises the author’s extent of research on this subject.

In all, an eye-opener on the world’s economic scenario and its impact on India. If you are into economics, you will find it an enlightening read. If you are new to this topic like me, take your time to read through the pages slowly and you will be able to get a picture of the happenings.

This book gives a deep examination and insights into the financial crisis that struck all major economies both before and after the epidemic. The Covid epidemic was mostly concerned with comprehending economic difficulties and international economics.

Although it is still too early for books on the economic ramifications of coronavirus.
But it's never too early to consider what economic history has to teach us about the broader ramifications of what we're living through—and the difficult decisions that lay ahead in the months and years ahead.

A network of cross-holdings amongst businesses in many industries, the "Keiretsu" group is supported by a core bank, insurance, and real estate companies.
This system was a modified version of the traditional "Zaibatsu" system (family-owned enterprises of this magnitude), which we are all familiar with. Yasuda, Mitsubishi, Mitsui, etc.

The Keiretsu model has served as the cornerstone of Japan's expanding economy since the 19th century. For the parties concerned and on a larger scale for the whole Japanese economy, this concept proved to be innovative. However, Japan was severely hurt by the 1973 oil shock since up until that point, its economy was heavily dependent on manufacturing and exports. Japan has to reinvent its long-standing plans in light of the recent energy crisis and the impending labour market problem; until then, moderate growth will become the new norm. Then, at a time when Japan is experiencing a problem caused by the demographic split, comes Covid. That is the economy of Japan in a nutshell.

The narrative and idea of the book were fantastic, and I believe the book deserves some attention because it has a unique concept and plot, in my opinion. The writing style was improved, and the terminology was understandable.

All of us in some way or another other have tried to negotiate with the new normal, either immediately after we faced the pandemic, or when we were recovering from it. Nevertheless, Saurav Jha decides to investigate the whole scenario of the pandemic.

The writer takes the trouble to research the aftermath of the shock that first of all the medical fraternity was going through. He also tried to analyse in comparison whether we as a country will be able to brace the challenge and overcome and deliver progress towards the economic setback we are facing.

This book is a benchmark that is going to go a long way not just in assisting the state and the government to overcome testing economic times but also otherwise when we struggle with really normal but important economic issues.

Saurav Jha at the right time brings to us a solidly researched document to help us negotiate with the new normal. From a historical viewpoint of economic and international relations in the recent past up until Covid struck and nearby, Negotiating the New Normal provides a quick account of the top 4 economies in the world, namely the US, EU, China, and Japan.

The study is thorough quantitatively and economically, thus it becomes an advisable read for the economically sound reader. The language can be over the top, but doesn't that mean, you and I need to do a little bit more to get our language economically set right? A fantastic book that you shouldn't miss by any chance.

Negotiating the New Normal will give you reasons to believe that the new normal is here to stay and that we got to make peace with it. Irrespective of whether we like it or not. And look at the world around us, we are still trying to negotiate with the New Normal that has beset us with umpteen mental health issues along with other economic setbacks.

📉 The idea of being intermittently impoverished is nothing new. The pandemic-induced catastrophe known as the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2007–2008 was still being recovered from across the western countries. There is a perceived change in the East's prominence relative to the West. The world has seemed to change, since the COVID-19 pandemic, and work is still being done to restore a regular economy. The author here in this book tries to examine, why the western world's robust economic recovery is now more speculative than ever.
.
📉 "Negotiating the New Normal" Authored by @sjha1618 is highly, well-researched book, which provides information pertaining to the ways in which the Covid -19 outbreak, which had a profound impact on the whole world economy, had an impact on the Post-Global Financial Crisis era from 2008 to the present. It describes how India handled the turmoil and how countries across the world worked to restore financial prosperity. The enormous divide between the affluent and the poor and the debt that financial institutions are carrying are topics discussed in relation to how India may transcend this and emerge as the global giant.
.
📉 The book in all is divided into eight sections, each of which discusses the challenges and concerns in great length and depth. To further your grasp of the subject, you might check out the many references listed there in the footnote section of each page. This highlights the depth of the author's study into this topic. Things considered, a sobering look at the state of the global economy and how India is being affected. It is an insightful read when you're passionate about economics. If you are unfamiliar with this subject, like I was, take your time and go through the pages carefully so that you can understand what is going on.

It is simply the fact that our position in this world is defined one of the prime aspects of life: our economical situation. Economy, in the hindsight or even if you prove into it, proves to be a denominator affecting our lifestyle, affecting us and thus, affecting the collective economy of the country.
It is not hidden to us, that COVID-19, just as it cut off the lives of many from the charts of mortal, has also made a significant dent on the economical status of countries, more concisely, of the world.
Hopes and dreams were squashed, downsizing happened and work from home reminded us that there's nothing that could not be done from the confines of home.
Speaking of economy, a field I don't have have adept knowledge about, Saurav Jha's book 'Negotiating The New Normal' quite succinctly puts it out for me to understand how severely COVID-19 struck India's economy dividing it into a before and after and how India could learn, grow, adapt and change if need to rise above it all.
As mentioned earlier, my knowledge on economy is limited and hence, the book took a large chunk of my time. Even though lot of its portion was quite lost on me, I still managed to capture it's essence in my understanding of it.
Jha captures the real picture of this country, segregates them into understandable segments with depth, discusses what is the need of the moment, and discusses many more important issues in hand with such a strong fervour and knowledge.

Do not, I repeat, do not let my poor understanding of economics or its terms, hinder you from picking this book.
If you understand economy or are interested in understanding of India's position in it, you should definitely read this book.
