Welcome to Harland Creek, a small town in Mississippi. This is an easy read and light hearted, wholesome story of murder, betrayal and intriguing characters! A murder in a quilt shop in a small town where everyone knows everyone's business is pretty hard to pull off, even harder to solve but....not when there's a goat named Petunia 🐐on the case!! 🤣.

This is a fast paced, action packed and enjoyable story. It actually had me laughing at the characters because Petunia was way ahead of them all! Nearly everyone has a motive for killing Getrude, the " meanest lady in town". One by one each suspect is cleared as Petunia solves the case!! Yay for Petunia 👏👏👏!! It's the first book in a 3 part series, however it really can be read as a stand alone. I really enjoyed it and if you are looking for a quick, easy read, I highly recommend this one.

I work on a farm and I really love goats! They really are sweet, can be a bit stubborn ( give them a carrot 🥕 and you have a friend for life 😄!) and are honestly smart!!

Dove Agnew is back home in Harland Creek, Mississippi after her business partner tanked her New York City dress design business. Now she is using her sewing talents working with her mom at her quilt shop. While not the life she had imagined she is glad to be helping out her mom in any way she can. That is until Gertrude Brown starts making demands and is then later found dead in the shop. Dove is everyone’s prime suspect but she is no killer. She finds help to clear her name and solve the mystery of the tea cup quilt from her mom’s friends, the Harland Creek Quilters and their mascot, a goat named Petunia. Hopefully they all survive to tell the tale and catch the real killer.

The author has introduced a wonderful cast of characters to get this series off to a great start. The Harland Creek Quilters are a hoot. Their hearts are in the right place and their heads have great ideas but their bodies betray a lot of the sleuthing they want to do. Our protagonist Dove appreciates their help but knows she needs to save herself, especially because her ex-boyfriend and chief of police, is even questioning her and her motives. As this is the first book in the series we have just scratched the surface of character development but I am already invested in the entire group. I mean, come on, a group with a goat as a sidekick has to pique everyone’s interest.

The mystery is well-written too. I was very intrigued by the tea cup quilt and all the interest it seemed to be receiving. Plus Gertrude Brown had her share of enemies. Almost everyone in town had a bone to pick with her but most are not revealing exactly what. It was good to see Dove had plenty of company. Readers are given plenty of clues and that did help me solve the mystery before the reveal but I still found the ending quite exciting.

Prior to my accident, I was an avid quilter so this story took me to a happy place. I do miss the joy of completing my own projects but am happy to get to read about others piecing some amazing works of art.

The Mystery of the Tea Cup Quilt is a clever mystery with endearing characters in a terrific setting. I really enjoyed the high dose of humor throughout the book. I caught myself laughing out loud several times. Petunia contributes to the funny but almost every character has a comical moment or two. I am really looking forward to the next book in this series. The Mystery of the Drunkards Path is set to be released on January 9, 2023.

Dove is back in her small hometown of Harland Creek, her once-promising New York designer career & love life both having recently gone spectacularly down the tubes. She’s a likable character with a good heart and a dry sense of humor, and she’s hopeful that her run of bad luck is behind her. A short-lived hope for poor Dove, as she’s soon the prime suspect in the murder of the meanest woman in town. Her high school sweetheart Dean is now the chief of police, so there’s a delightful simmer of romantical tension to appease my kissingbooks heart – just a barely-there simmer for now, but I think it may develop into more in future books. The mystery isn’t overly complicated but it has enough red herrings to keep things interesting.

Even though Dove is the protagonist of this series, her mother’s group of friends (aka the Harland Creek Quilters) are the stars of the show. They provide most of the comic relief in this story, and in fact there were a few scenes when I literally laughed out loud at their well-intentioned antics. Most notably, during the big reveal (“Not today, Satan!” hahahahahahaha) and, earlier in the story, the scene where they are preparing to go snoop around in the murder victim’s house in the dark – a task that becomes abundantly more difficult (and hilarious) when various medical ailments are brought up that disqualify most of the quilters from the stealth mission:

“Everyone who has had a hip replacement or knee replacement, raise your hand.”

LOL! And I can’t forget to mention Petunia the endearing goat who has her own distinctive personality that contributes to the book’s humor.

Bottom Line: If you need a good dose of laughter (and these days, who doesn’t?), then make sure you pick up a copy of The Mystery of the Tea Cup Quilt by Jodi Allen Brice! I enjoyed following along as Dove and the Harland Creek Quilters try to clear Dove’s name, especially when their conversations and/or approach had me chuckling as I read. Her mother’s quilting group reminded me of my own late grandmothers, and I couldn’t help but picture them as part of the antics – something that made the humorous scenes even funnier for me. I’m looking forward to seeing what they get up to next and I’m keeping an eye on that dash of romance potential in future books, too!

A fast paced quilting cozy mystery. While cute too many characters were introduced at a time too quickly. Petunia the goat an unwanted sidekick was a good quirky touch. I had guessed the guilty person. An enjoyable read and I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

This was a cute fast read. I am a fairly fast reader and I read it in less than 2-3ish hours as I was hooked! I love to read murder mysteries, but I don't love to read them at night as I get so sucked into them they don't make me fall asleep and I end up staying up all night. So, I thought I'd try a cozy mystery in hopes that I would fall asleep reading it.. spoiler alert... I did not, I still stayed up late lol. I agree with a few others that characters were introduced to fast, but the story was cute. I wish we got to see a bit more with Dean.

I enjoyed it very much. It was quite a different kind of mystery, it had several people who could have done the deal, and it turned out not to be who I thought it was.

This was a fun book but you felt so bad for Dove (what a name) who lost her business because of a shady person...hope they catch him...and I love the goat....so different from the cats and dogs in other cozy mysteries...an enjoyable book and you will never guess who the killer is!

I don't tend to read a whole lot of cozy mysteries. I've dabbled in this genre before and haven't liked most of what I've read but there is one series by an author I love that I do really enjoy. Because of that I've always wanted to read more cozy mystery in the hopes of finding more that I would like which is why I decided to give this one a go and I am so glad I did because I really enjoyed it.

I know nothing about quilting, so all the talk of quilting went over my head, but it didn't take over the story, so it didn't really affect my enjoyment at all. I loved the humor throughout, a lot of which was because of the goat Petunia but almost all of the characters contribute to the humor at some point in the story as well. Speaking of characters there are a good amount of characters in this book that I kind of had trouble keeping up with who was who at times. I was wondering how Petunia the goat would fit into the story but it worked so well and I want a pet goat like Petunia now. 

I was able to guess who the killer was pretty early on but me being me I couldn't lock in my answer because I am so indecisive, and I figured I would be wrong because I usually am. Despite guessing who the killer was I still enjoyed the journey to the big reveal. The ending felt a little rushed to me but overall, I thought this was a cute cozy mystery and I would totally be up for reading more in this series.

Do you prefer a nice mystery over a spooky scare? If so, I highly recommend this new mystery by Jodi Allen Brice!

With its cast of zany characters and misfits, not to mention a goat who helps solve the crime, this delightful cozy mystery had me laughing from the very beginning!

After a devastating business loss Dove Agnew returns to her hometown to temporarily (she hopes) live with her mother. It turns out to be a good thing because her mom’s quilting shop has suffered some losses, so Dove decides to help.

On her first day at work Dove gets into a loud argument with Gertrude, a hateful customer. Gossip spreads quickly in a small town so the next day, when Gertrude is found murdered in the quilting shop, the townspeople blame Dove!

Enter her mom’s friends- a group of elderly quilters who will do anything for Dove, including breaking and entering and snooping around!

Here’s a hint of what had me laughing late into the night:

🫖 “You’ve got to be kidding me. Why didn’t you tell me I was wearing a glow-in-dark tee shirt?” (To a break-in)

🫖 She shoved her vintage silver glitter cat eye glasses up on the bridge of her nose and squinted at me.

🫖”Raise your hand if you’ve had a hip replacement!”

The action moves quickly to a satisfying conclusion. The author dropped enough red herrings to keep me guessing until almost the end.

Dove Agnew is the main character of this story; formerly a dress designer who was living the high life in New York until her business partner ruined the workplace along with Dove’s reputation, so Dove is forced to move back home to Harland Creek, where her mother is the owner of a quilt shop. Dove finds work at the shop, and everything seemed to be going fine until one morning, Dove, her mother, and another friend discovered the body of Gertrude Brown on the floor of the quilt shop. Dove is considered the prime suspect since she was to have argued with Gertrude and was possibly the last person to have seen her alive.

What did I like about this reading?
The quilting club ladies, and their sidekick a goat named Petunia; makes for a funny reading as it kept me guessing and laughing out loud throughout their investigations. These ladies are in their mid-sixties and seventies as they come and go in the quilt shop where they assist Dove’s mother who is the owner of the quilting shop. The rapport between the ladies is wonderfully active.
The book reads like one long and very pleasant conversation as I am reminded of this newsletter that I had received with a subject heading: What makes a cozy mystery a cozy since some might claim to be cozies when not. This newsletter stated that a true cozy is not about the length of the book or body counts but in fact about what takes place during and especially after a body is found and not so much the process but how the individuals in the story relates to finding out who the killer is.

I enjoyed the characters such as Weenie who was named Halloween but prefers and goes by Weenie, she’s a comfort like one of them quilts. And especially in the end when the ladies meet up for their Thursday night quilting; they close the shop for the day and spend time quilting and catching up with one another and the town.
It gives that feeling of arriving and being invited to stay a while longer is best felt amongst friends in the quilting circle. Have a seat and come to meet: Weenie, Dove, Agnes, Bertha and Petunia, the goat who bleats them all into happiness.

Dove used to be a successful clothes designer in New York until her business partner used the business to sell drugs; which was even more terrible considering she made children's clothes! So with her reputation ruined Dove had no other option but to return home to the town of Harland Creek. Everything was going fairly well, all things considered, until she found the body of Gertrude Brown on the floor of her mom's quilt shop. Now rumors are flying all over town and she's a murder suspect! Her ex-boyfriend, also the police chief, is even suspicious of her. With the investigation going nowhere and with her the prime suspect, Dove, the Harland Creek Quilters (a group of her mom's friends), and a goat named Petunia, work to find the real killer.
So this book was my first cozy mystery and it was great. The book was fast paced and easy to read. I really didn't put it down until I finished. The characters are well written and each is incredibly unique. The best part is they truly do fit the idea of the small town southern old woman haha. Really the quilting group who helps Dove are just a bunch of busy bodies with nothing better to do, but they try their best to be of help. The help they give of course generally causes more laugh out loud predicaments for Dove than anything.
I enjoyed this book a lot. I loved that the most able bodied investigator of Dove's group was in fact the goat Petunia. She is the one who found the most clues after all! I spent a lot of time laughing at this one because the group just kept getting into the most insane situations. The decision to break into Gertrude's house to find clues being one of them. Or the gas station hot dog catastrophe. Best of all I think was that I was generally surprised by the revelation of the murder.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 I was tickled all throughout this cozy mystery. There were interesting names of some of the characters like Dove and Weenie (whose real name was Halloween). There was a pet goat who got to participate in the murder investigation. This goat went everywhere on a leash. Also there were some funny and quirky characters who lived in this town. Lots of witty repertoire occurred throughout this novel.

Because this was a quilt novel set mostly in a quilt store, fabric, quilt patterns and activities were mentioned. For instance, to disguise the names of the suspects on the white board, the suspect’s names were changed to quilt patterns that related to them. All the latest fabrics, like Tula pink, Moda and Kaffe Fassett Collection were name dropped multiple times.

The mystery was fairly predictable. I figured out who did it early on in the book but I couldn’t figure out the motive until close to the end. The author threw in tons of red herrings. I did feel she wrapped everything up nicely. But it seemed like all the wrapping up happened in the last two chapters.

“You’re making more noise than a preacher at a revival meeting.”

(This exchange happened during a breaking and entering of the dead woman’s house.) “Why in the world are you looking in her refrigerator?” “I need some items. Haven’t had time to go grocery shopping.”
Weenie gasped. “Bertha, you can’t take things from someone’s refrigerator. The Bible says thou shall not steal.”
“The Bible also says to practice hospitality. Besides, she’s dead. It would just go to waste.” Bertha huffed and made her way back to the kitchen.

The Mystery of the Tea Cup Quilt is such a delightful cozy mystery book, and I have fallen in love with Harland Creek, the little town in which the book takes place. As I was looking around Goodreads, I discovered that the author has another series set in Harland Creek. Those are sweet, clean romance books. Since I enjoy reading that genre as well, I’m going to have to read those to get another Harland Creek fix. If you love small town cozies, I think you’re going to love it in Harland Creek!

Dove Agnew has returned to Harland Creek to live with her mom. She left for NYC to hit it big, and she did. But it all came crashing down around her. Now she’s back with a beat-up car and very few belongings. Helping her mom out in the quilt shop was helping her get some normalcy back in her life, but then she finds a body in the back room! Since she was seen arguing with the victim, Dove is on the suspect list for Gertrude’s murder. Never mind that Gertrude had more enemies than friends…let’s say 98.9% of the town knew she was a bossy crook and couldn’t stand her. The others just put up with her. Dove, her mom, and her mom’s friends in the quilting group know Dove couldn’t murder anyone, and they set out to prove her innocence.

The Mystery of the Tea Cup Quilt gives a pretty good overview of the characters. Some we get to know more in depth than others, but as the series progresses, I’m sure they’ll become much more familiar to us. Though Dove is down and out, she gains back some of her confidence throughout the book. The quilters consist of several characters, but I felt like I really got to know the character Weenie during the book. I adore her! Dean, the chief of police and Dove’s high school flame, is another strong character whom I feel I got to know pretty well. And Petunia, the goat, adds a lot of charm and humor to the story.

I thought that the mystery was very well plotted, and we’re given just enough clues to help the ladies find out who murdered Gertrude. There are several suspects, including Dove, who have a good motive to murder Gertrude, but in the end, I think you’ll figure out whodunit.

The charming setting, well-written characters, and exciting mystery make The Mystery of the Tea Cup Quilt one to add to your TBR piles. I am looking forward to reading more books in this series, and I highly recommend it!

Mystery of the Tea Cup Quilt is the first book in the Harland Creek Mystery Quilters series by Jodi Allen Brice. It was a quick and enjoyable read with a lot of quirky characters.

Most characters are mainly older women who are friends of Dove’s mom, who owns the local quilt shop. Dove returns to her small town home from the big city of New York after having serious business issues. But she doesn’t let her mom know the real reason she’s home.

Dove’s mom’s shop is also having some financial difficulties, and Dove wants to help her do all she can to get it financially sound. But when a murder happens in the quilt shop and Dove’s the prime suspect, what will they do?

Dove’s ex-boyfriend from their high school days is now the chief of police of their small town. They cross paths at every turn, especially when Dove, her mom, and the other quilters are all looking for suspects and clues to solve the murder. They do a pretty good job of it, too, and Dean and the other cops are not very happy with their sleuthing. And neither are some who just happen to be on their suspect list.

There are several secrets, quilting references, a goat named Petunia, threats, illnesses, injuries, arguments, support, and numerous clues. Dove and Dean are awkward in their dealings, but could there be undercurrents we’re unaware of?

The story twists and turns as we gather the clues, and the suspect list grows and then shrinks to leave us with just the murderer. The story has closure with solving the crime, and we learn the importance of the Tea Cup Quilt, but I felt the book ended too abruptly.

Zig-zagging through hints and clues, Ms. Brice takes us on an entertaining journey to find the culprit while getting to know the quirky characters of Harland Creek. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, The Mystery of the Drunkards Path.

The Mystery of the Tea Cup Quilt by Jodi Allen Brice was entertaining. I loved the antics of the quilting group. The breaking and entering getaway scene was hilarious!

“Who killed Gertrude” was not a slam-dunk, an easy mystery to solve. I had my suspicions but was on the fence for quite a while. Certain suspects on the quilters’ board were way too obvious. I had to think who wasn’t obvious. That’s when I narrowed it down to two suspects. By the way, I was right. I figured out the who but not everything the murderer had been up to. Let’s just say, murder was not their only crime.

The break-out star of The Mystery of the Tea Cup Quilt was Petunia, the goat. I thought goats were cool before this, but now I think they are my favorite barnyard animal!

Even though Dove (police’s prime suspect) and Dean (police chief) butted heads about the case, there was still a spark from their high school sweetheart days. They didn’t “hook up” in this book, but I’m hoping that changes in the sequel — which I can’t wait to read.

The Mystery of the Tea Cup Quilt is the first book in Jodi Allen Brice’s Harland Creek Mystery Quilters series. Readers who enjoy cozy mystery novels are truly going to enjoy this book. For readers who have read Jodi Allen Brice’s books for before are going to enjoy this new series that spins-off from other Harlan Creek novels.
Dove is the main character of this novel, and she’s fallen on some hard times. Thanks to a sleazy business partner, the business empire she was building has crumbled into nothing. In New York, it was a big deal, but since she used an alias her hometown doesn’t know about the fiasco...yet. So, Dove feels secure returning home that her secret is safe for a time. Too bad when she goes off on a customer that she chooses the wrong one – the town busy-body who delights in blackmailing residents with their secrets. When she turns up dead in the quilting shop, Dove is prime suspect number one.
The Mystery of the Tea Cup Quilt is a page-turner of a novel, and will keep you page-turning from beginning to end. This book has a delightful cast of characters that will keep you coming back for more with lots of small town feels and drama. This book has just the right amount of drama, humor, and mystery with little hints of potential future romance.
I’m rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I look forward to what this author writes next in this series. An absolute must read for cozy mystery lovers.

With her clothing business in tatters, Dove Agnew moves back to her small hometown from New York City. Though she's kept her failure private, the town nasty known by the name of Gertrude has ferreted out her secret and is willing to blab to all and sundry. Nevertheless, Dove honours her mother's commitment to finishing Gertrude's complicated quilt. While Dove is at her mother's quilting shop late one night, Gertrude arrives with her usual threats. Dove ushes Gertrude out of the store only to find on her arrival the following day that there's been a murder, Gertrude is dead, and Dove is the prime suspect.

I didn't take to the main character, not ever. She was too willing to let people walk over her. She broke the law, left and right and seemed to feel that she was owed special favours from the Police Chief because they had dated in high school. Dove wasn't the only character I didn't care for - many other characters either forced their will on others or were completely and unreasonably rude.

So much negativity led to me being uncomfortable during the read. It's just not my cup of tea.

After her business partner commits a felony and escapes, leaving Dove holding the bag, she returns to her mother's quaint hometown and starts work at the failing quilt shop, hoping to outrun her spoiled reputation. Unfortunately, a dead body appears in the shop a few days later, and guess who's the prime suspect? Dove must learn to manage the chatty old women of her mother's quilting group (and their nosy goat) while trying to avoid opening up old wounds and revealing her unfortunate misfortunes, but the small town isn't having any of her newfangled ideas.

This book does exactly what I hope my cozy mysteries will do: there's a cast of quirky characters and a cozy atmosphere, and a dead body appears right away, leaving no doubt where the book is heading. My only real complaint is that there are way too many characters to keep track of. The clues are spread out well to help me solve the case alongside Dove, and while she makes some pretty stupid decisions along the way, I enjoyed seeing her learn to navigate her new situation, and I hope that she makes some friends and doesn't get caught up in too much nonsense in the sequel.

One day reading challenge: I read this in one day!

Plot:
Dove moves from the big city back home, afraid to confront her mother about her life's failings she works at her Mom's quilt shop. She soon slips into an amature sleuth when the body of the town's most hated woman turns up dead... IN HER MOMS QUILT SHOP!
In a small town word travels fast, and the cops are your local small town kind, with the chief of police being Dove's ex-boyfriend and high-school sweetheart.
It's up to Dove, her Mom and her Mom's quilting group to solve this crime!

Review:
This was your classic cozy mystery, small town, Amature sleuth, kind of book. It's exactly what you expect, and it's got a cute hallmark feel. It was an easy read, nothing felt over explained or under explained. I think I figured out who it was exactly when you were supposed to (not when they revealed it), but it was still a surprising ending.

It works as a stand alone, but the characters have potential for a series.

This story is Ace friendly!

Had to give this 1 star. I have been collecting free books for my Kindle, and this was one of them.

Book was full of writing mistakes, especially with ,’s. Irritated me a lot.

I hated how stupid the main character was. A 5-year-old could make better decisions than her, and she broke the law multiple times and tried to act all innocent. I had to pause reading out of anger when she was surprised that Dean, the police officer and her ex high school sweetheart ”dared” to suspect her of the murder.
Like hello??? All the facts make you a suspect, how stupid are you???
Also making Dean have feelings for her in the end was annoying. Dove was childishly jealous the whole book and Dean had no reason to still have feelings for her.

How did Dove even manage to be succesfull in the first place, when she listens to no-one, behaves like a kid and has no sense of self-preservation??

Lastly, the last line ”and they all laughed”. Nobody would laugh in that situation!?! If you read it, you know why.

The Mystery of the Teacup Quilt (Harland Creek Mystery Quilters) is a Cozy Mystery that features an eclectic cast of characters, including a literal old goat! This book was a nice addition to my spookier fare for the month and I really appreciated the authors humorous descriptions of the quilting club and the little town that it resides in. Harland Creek makes me think of the place my husband went to college and how different that small town was from where we live now. All of the townsfolk had interesting stories that made Dove's sleuthing all the more fun to read. Dove and Dean have great chemistry and I'm now invested in seeing where all of that romantic tension goes! I also enjoyed the quilting descriptions and hearing about the camaraderie between the ladies. I included a much loved quilt, made by my talented Aunt Debbie, in the post to cozy it up. I loved this Cozy Mystery

J'adore les cozy mysteries, surtout ceux qui incorporent un élément créatif dedans, comme le tricot, la couture ou ici le quilting.

Le livre a pas mal de points positifs : un cast de personnages secondaires sympathiques, une intrigue policière intéressante avec pas mal de rebondissements, par exemple.

Les problèmes : une héroïne insupportable. Dove cache des secrets à ses proches qu'elle n'a pas besoin de cacher et se comporte pire qu'une ado avec son amour de jeunesse. Je n'ai pas accroché à cette héroïne menteuse et soupe au lait.

Et surtout il y a des erreurs partout. De la première personne qui passe à la troisième personne, des changements de noms de personnages, des mots qui manquent... La lecture est pas simple !

Mystery of the teacup quilt

The book starts out with Dove, a young lady, coming home to a small town due to some problems with her business and an unscrupulous business partner. Her mother owns a quilt shop and has been struggling to make ends meet. Dove is going to show her mother and a friend the quilt she had completed the previous night but when she enters the room holding the quilt she discovers the body of the woman for whom she was finishing the quilt. She faints at the sight of all the blood. And is promptly accused of killing the woman. This is an interesting if somewhat unrealistic cozy mystery that was a fun read.

Dove and the quilting gang

Despite the "quite a few times" that we the readers were served inaccuracies, I actually enjoyed reading this book. We are told one thing at the beginning and later on the story abruptly changes. Some of the descriptions of the characters were a bit over the top, especially the murder victim and Pastor John's sister. Others were delightful, I quite liked Weenie. Although, I am not that sure about Petunia.the
It really was not that difficult to guess who had committed the crime, so the revelation came as no surprise.
If you like light reading, go ahead and indulge. It is not a bad way to pass a few hours.it's

Dove Agnew is a successful dress designer who was living in New York until her former business partner ruined her career. Dove moves back to her home town of Harland Creek to start her life over. When Dove moves back she discovers Gertrude Brown’s dead body in her mother’s quilt shop. Dove becomes the main suspect in the murder and her ex-boyfriend the current chief of police Dean suspects her of the crime. Dove investigates the crime to clear her name before anyone else gets hurt. Dove requests the help of the Harland Creek Quilters including a goat named Petunia to help solve the murder. I really enjoyed this wonderful cozy mystery novel.

In this cozy mystery, a small-town quilt shop becomes the backdrop for a whodunit filled with secrets, a touch of charm, and plenty of tea and quilting references. It’s got all the makings of a light escape read.

As a whole, I’d call this a nice cozy read—comforting and easy to breeze through. The small-town charm and gentle mystery made it enjoyable enough, but for me it lacked the depth that builds real connection with the characters. I didn’t find myself truly invested in their lives or emotions, which left it feeling more surface-level than I’d hoped. Still, it’s a pleasant pick if you’re in the mood for something simple, warm, and undemanding.
