Tells the story of Susanna Dickinson, who was wounded but survived the Alamo, where her husband died, and carried a message from the victorious Santa Anna to Sam Houston
The kids and I are having fun reading about Texas/San Antonio history before we do our in-depth Alamo/missions field trip next week. This was a really good one about what happened at the Alamo with it being real but not overly gory. Actually opened up a lot of discussion between us. Recommend!
Great subject, of course, but the story was hard to get through and almost boring until the actually battle for the Alamo. Still worth the read and I think it will help kids understand the struggle for Texas Independence.
For a person living in the city here this battle happened and where the real life people lived and fought and died. A true story of the 18 year old woman. That knew these brave men and lost her husband in the Battle. This is on event in history, that needs to be remembered.

The story of a soldier's wife who was at the Alamo, it's on a great level for children--it tells the story without too much graphic violence. I am pretty wimpy when it comes to history sometimes so I love historical novels that give me some good detail and feel for the time period without being overwhelming.
