Size matters, according to this groundbreaking picture book — and in a good way. Here, a young boy describes his large mother in caring terms — her softness, her warmth, how comfortable and reassuring it is to sit on her lap on the bus. But when she goes on a diet “because of what people say,” he becomes a picky eater himself to show her how foolish she’s being. This ...more

A children's book about fat positivity and how diets are stupid? Of course I picked it up. I really appreciate where the book was going, but I feel like there's mixed messages because this book is NOT body positive. The little boy speaks negatively when thinking about if his mother was a skinny mom- not cool. Some people are just naturally skinny, that part would have been better if he had said something like "she wouldn't be the mom I know" instead of saying he'd be "afraid of breaking her." I ...more

Beautiful story about a little boy with an obese mamma whom he loves very much! He loves how big she is and teaches her to love herself, too. :)

I feel like this book could be very controversial since our society is very pro-fat shaming. We unnecessarily associate "fat" with "unhealthy," which for some reason means we are allowed to treat them as less than human. Skinny does not equal healthy. I am speaking as a skinny girl who is out of breath from a short walk across my house and for whom

So, yeah, this book is about a kid who loves his mom unconditionally even though she's really, really big. That's very sweet and I appreciate the sentiment behind this book, but oh my goodness, it is problematic on so many levels. The little boy might change his mind when his mom has a massive heart attack before his 20th birthday, or develops diabetes, or any of the other myriad health problems that come from being at a very unhealthy weight. Yes, heavy people should ABSOLUTELY be

little boy tells us proudly how big and wonderful his mother is from how soft she is, to how loving she is, to how wonderful it is to sit on her lap on the bus.

When his mother goes on a diet, "because of what other people say," he is outraged and becomes a picky eater himself to show her how foolish she is being. There can be no doubt that for this child, his mother is great just the way she is.This book is a remarkably life-affirming story about a young child who knows that a person should be

Great big disappointment.

I had high hopes for this book. I really did. Because, well, I'm overweight, and I wanted to see how this book treated that topic. I came away from it feeling like this is not a book for children, it's for the adult reader.

It's basically about how the son of this woman who is "fat" likes her to be large. The first page: "My mamma is big. Very big. She is the biggest mother in the world." It goes

Hmmmm. So, I love how he adores his mama and accepts and appreciates her for who she is but I do find it a little odd that given the health concerns for being a big mama that, that was never part of the discussion in the book. My dad was quite a big guy too and I could give a flip what people thought of him at the time but I worried about the years he would lose on his life as a big unhealthy overweight person. Maybe there should be a sequel...."Great Big Mama Gets Healthy!"

Really love the message. Didn’t like some of the wording. Book says “stupid”.
Loved this book despite some problematic language around dieting and eating

Very interesting picture book, like none I have read before. I could really feel the comfort that this little boy gets from his mamma when he is talking about her. C. 2009, genre-picture book/realistic fiction

Such a sweet message! It's important to understand our children love us dearly even when we think we are flawed.
