This collection of 30 stories are great stimuli for children to think about big concepts and discuss philosophical questions. Each story has a concept attached to it such as happiness, truth, knowledge, beauty and differences to name a few. Along with the stories there are a series of questions to springboard discussions. Divided under 3 categories: 1. Comprehension questions 2. Key questions about the concept 3. Further activities.
It’s a good setup for philosophical discussions. I chose to let my 7 year old daughter come up with her own philosophical questions based on the stories’ big concepts so as to follow her interests.
Her favorite stories for philosophical discussion were “The Man Who Sold his Shadow” and “The Parts of the Body”.
Very useful for those new to engaging in philosophy for children are the first 15 pages which acts as a guide in doing so. It coaches the reader to ask key questions such as “Is it a good reason…?” and “What alternatives are there?”.
