It is a college textbook purposing to teach “appreciation” for classic texts of short story, poetry, and drama. Some selections are worthy, some seem silly to me, some I skipped (ex., Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman near the end of the volume began so stupidly that my curiosity was squelched.).
The editorial commentary throughout is helpful to one as uninformed as myself. And it is also helpful to have so many age-old “favorites” collected in a single volume. Apparently, it is a very popular text for literature instructors, judging from the many editions now listed in 2025. I will keep the book on a shelf and within reach for future reference.
