This is a short book for UK based small children with lots going on. Lad is derided by the other kids. However, Lad's owner Lizzie loves him anyway.

There are a bunch of dogs shown with special talents. The dogs' owners are a varied lot, including an Indian boy, a Black girl and a kid in a wheelchair.

Lad's special talent is sniffing. This gets him into and out of trouble.

The book is meant to encourage kids to read, so it's very skimpy on what to do if your pet goes missing. This annoys me -- kids can handle learning about what to do AND gain reading skills at the same time.

The full-color illustrations by Lisa Williams were a blast. They were delightfully goofy, and yet managed subtle details, like a bird on a roof, or the garden where Lad starts his misadventure.
