Online comic adaptation of the Innkeeper Chronicles: On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town with her seemingly harmless Shih Tzu named Beast. But Dina is...different. Her Inn can magically defy the laws of physics, her broom is a deadly weapon, and her little dog is far from harmless. Under the circumstances, "normal" is a bit of a stretch for Dina. And now, something with wicked claws and deepwater teeth has begun to hunt at night....Feeling responsible for her neighbors, Dina decides to get involved. Before long, she has to juggle dealing with the annoyingly attractive, ex-military, new neighbor, Sean Evans—an alpha-strain werewolf—and the equally arresting cosmic vampire soldier, Arland, while trying to keep her Inn and its guests safe. But the enemy she’s facing is unlike anything she’s ever encountered before. It’s smart, vicious, lethal… and putting herself between this creature and her neighbors might just cost her everything.
April 29, 2023: Season 1 finally finished with 50 episodes. I hope they adapt the second book! Read via Tapas.
August 19, 2022: I love this series and I’m so freaking excited about the Tapas webcomic adaptation. It updates weekly on Fridays. Click here for more information: https://tapas.io/series/the-innkeeper...
The comic is running a nice balance between being faithful to the source material and expanding some aspects of the story where they make sense for the medium. The weekly episode drops also remind me of the weekly releases of the original story on the Andrews blog, so that just fits too.
Honestly. I thought I'd already reviewed this already. I'd read the novel first ( or listen to the graphic audio) and then read this. It is such a fun adaption, but I think it works best as a companion to the novel rather than standing by itself.
Loved it and read it as soon as it was delivered. I loved seeing one of my favorite stories visually and getting a few extra snippets that weren’t in the original story!
I'm giving this one 3 stars. It's just not my favourite version of this story (the book I gave 4 stars)
The art was alright - not my favourite that I've seen
There were some changes to the original story. Minor spoilers BTW for people who haven't read any version of this story. I liked that there were a few more scenes of Sean and Dina to really expand on their romance (which tbh is a little lacking in the original books - although i still love it there as well). They tried to give it more of an actual love triangle with Armand which I thought was unnecessary. I liked that in the original Armand was in a "love triangle" but it was clearly not really important to him or to Dina, Dina wasn't interested and Armand was kinda doing it to get under Sean's skin and coz he had a fascination with earth. But in this version they really tried to push a "love triangle" narrative, which I wasn't as excited about. Also they added a new character. I assume he's going to be relevant in adaptations of the later books coz he was pretty unnecessary here. Overall, the changes they made were a bit up and down in my opinion. Some worked for character and relationship development, some didn't. But it did make the pacing feel a little disjointed.
I still love the story and I will be reading any adaptations that come out of the next books in the series, but as it stands, my ratings are thus:
1. the dramatised audiobook adaptation 2. the original book 3. the tapas graphic novel
I enjoy the original version more. In retrospect I should have realized this was not long enough to cover the entire first book Clean Sweep. I wont be getting anymore of the graphic novels. The artwork does not match what I envisioned while reading this series and I got "the book is better than the movie" feeling from reading this.
Maybe if I had started here I would be happy, but I read this series first years ago and they have stuck with me long enough that the art didn't quite fit for me.
Nothing against this version, it just wasn't for me.
A fun comic of the first book, Clean Sweep! It's not exactly as I imagined it, but a lot can be forgiven... I find it interesting that a few scenes (quite a few, actually) were added to the comic. I heard that it was to meet the minimum episode # requirement on Tapas or something. I can't say that I loved the additions, since it slowed down the story a it, but I'm treating them as bonus deleted scenes.
Great adaptation of a fantastic sci-fi series. I read this as a serial via the Tapas app. I had already read the book, so i knew what was supposed to happen. I thought the artwork was so well done. The only thing i would have changed was to give Dina just the hint of a softer/southern deamenor. Her image is just a little more sharp then i pictured. The rest of the characters were perfect. I absolutely love the Sean/Arland feud.
Basic Plot: Dina runs an intergalactic inn, and had to deal with some aliens causing trouble on Earth.
This adaptation of Clean Sweep brought the novel to life in full color, quite literally. It was faithful to the novel and the descriptions of the characters. I seriously loved how all of them were portrayed. There were some interpretations and additions, all of which added to the original and didn't detract from it. I loved it.
The premise was fun, and the art was nice, but this just wasn't for me. The plot and characters didn't feel very fleshed out to me, and the pacing was off, leaving me a little confused at times. I'm not sure if those are issues that stem from the source material or if it's more because of the graphic novel format. I came into this without having read the original books series, so I know I'm not the target audience, but it was still a fun read!
I absolutely love this graphic novel. It allows me to enjoy one of my favorite series in a new format. Volume One covers the first half of book one, Clean Sweep, in the Innkeeper Chronicles.
The manga style art is gorgeous and well done. The adapted dialogue is fantastic. It manages to capture the banter between Sean and Dina as well as the humorous moments in the story. I hope Tapas makes each book in the series into a graphic novel.
It's a quite faithful adaptation of the book, which is always a plus. The art is quite square and geometric, I prefer more flowy lines, but it's not bad. I liked how the episodes where just one panel and all the scenes connected. ALso, the book was very nicely divided and titled. Overall, it was a nice addition to my daily reading.
The adaptation of book one is finished, and I think they did a phenomenal job! I loved seeing some of my favorite scenes alongside new characters and other changes that enhanced the story in this visual medium.
It was cute and I enjoyed it. I think I'm very loyal to the original story and so there were parts of the comic I didn't like, but maybe to a new reader, they would seem great. Still, it's a good adaptation and I will recommend it to comic fans.
