Once upon a time, a tattooed viscount said I wasn’t ready for him. He was right. But things have changed. Now, perhaps it’s time to design a happily ever after on our own terms…
They call me the Royal Rebel. As the youngest princess, and daughter of the King’s brother, I’m known for pushing boundaries. With fashion. With my family. With men.
I don’t play by their rules. I make up my own.
That changes when I run into Colin Bennick at a wedding reception. With his title and connections, he’s everything I’ve tried to avoid in a man. But with his sexy, dark-haired looks—and the ink on his forearm—he has definitely caught my attention.
Only he isn’t interested in playing games with me. His rejection hits me hard and I don’t react well.
But when a family crisis of royal proportions strikes, I have to grow up fast. I quickly realize that Colin was right about me. I wish I could have another chance to make things right between us.
I get my chance when he unexpectedly shows up at Balmoral. Now, the clock is ticking to discover if the chemistry between us is enough, and if I’ve finally found a prince among men…
USA Today bestselling author Aven Ellis began her publishing career in 2013 with her debut release, Connectivity. She currently writes romantic comedies featuring royals, billionaires, aristocrats, and athletes.
Her books are designed to make readers laugh out loud and fall in love. Happily-ever-after endings and good-boy heroes are guaranteed.
Aven lives in the Dallas area with her family. Aven loves shopping and fashion and can spend hours playing with fragrances in any department store. She can be found chatting it up on social media, eating speciality M&Ms, and crushing on the latest outfit the Duchess of Cambridge is wearing.
Aven does it again! Victoria and Colin’s story was another hit. My favorite part of the book was the message it sent: your future plans can change because of love. Victoria always wanted a life in the big city, but after meeting Colin she realizes her future may just be at his estate. It should also be noted, Aven wrote this while battling cancer. She wrote a BOOK while researching doctors, figuring out treatment plans, going through chemo and so much more. She is a superhero and incredibly inspiring.
This book was okay. I liked it in the end and some of my quibbles might’ve been a me problem and not the book’s fault. But I felt like there was something missing. The story never captured my full attention.
The pacing felt a bit off for me. Very little time passes in the first 10 chapters and that slowed things down. It sped up after that, but not much. I also wanted more romance and more sweet moments between Colin and Victoria. There wasn’t much building of tension before these two were together. And then they had all these family issues and future planning to deal with and I didn’t get enough of them just being together and being romantic. Luckily Victoria and Colin did have good communication and were usually pretty open with each other and able to work things out in a mature manner. That was nice.
Overall, it was an okay book. It had some good moments. The ending was satisfying. And I liked the epilogue.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Humiliated by his rejection when she last saw him, Princess Victoria York thought she would never forgive him or forget the pain those six words caused coming from Colin Bennick. That is, until he showed up for the weekend while she was staying the summer at Balmoral. Now she’s staring at his bare chest and he’s asking for more– he wants to know everything about her…and more.
Book 5 in the Modern Royals Series is another creative and engaging story that is hard to put down. I actually read it as slowly as possible intentionally as I am always so sad when the books by Aven Ellis end. This one did not disappoint. Each of her stories in the series can be read alone, but it’s definitely much more fun if you know the other characters and their backstories.
Princess Victoria is one of 3 sisters and determined to make a name for herself in the world of fashion. Unlike her siblings, she is not interested in being a working royal. Family turmoil has caused her to take a break from the world, so she is spending the summer at Balmoral before returning to uni in the fall. This is where Victoria’s path crosses with Colin Bennick again. (One of my favorite things about Aven’s books is that she uses the proper language of England throughout all of the stories.)
Colin, aka Viscount Ellington, has come back to England after seven years in the U.S. It is now time for him to prepare to eventually take over his family’s estate, Meadowspring Park. With a father who will not communicate any problems about the property which is in complete disrepair, a mother who is living in her own little cottage separate from her husband, and a brother who is eager to help, Colin needs every bit of support as he starts to learn how to manage the estate. Princess Victoria, or “HRH” as Colin calls her, wants to be his support person. Will he let her or push her away?
I love how Aven has carefully built a wonderful relationship amongst all of the royals in “the squad.” The squad has evolved starting with Book 1, and continues to grow. The addition of Colin and hopefully soon, his brother Hugo, has enhanced the group significantly. In this book, we also met Pippa, Princess Victoria’s cousin and new best friend.
The story of the summer of love for Viscount Ellington (Colin) and Princess Victoria (HRH) is steamy and fun and all adds up to a love story you won’t want to miss.
Thanks to Aven Ellis for an advanced review copy of this wonderful book.
A sincere thanks to Aven Ellis for providing an advance copy.
A prince among men is a crossover of both Modern Royals as well as Modern Aristocrats. It can be read as a stand alone as well, but being a fan, I highly recommend you read it all 😊
We first meet Princess Victoria, the royal fashionista and rebel in book 1 and we keep catching glimpses of her in the following books. And we meet Colin, the sophisticated Viscount in the previous book (Pitch to Palace).
The kind of character arc that is written for Victoria is astounding. She comes across as a princess who loves fashion and the author leads us to think (as does her father) that she'll end up with someone like a race care driver or a football player. She was adamant that she doesn't like anyone from the royal or aristocratic background and then she runs into Colin. And boy do the sparks fly! The author took this and surprised us by giving a love story that's so tender, so natural that it brought tears to my eyes.
Colin is another solid Aven hero. Having studied abroad, he finally comes home ready to take over the reins of the crumbling family estate when sees Victoria. The author has made us happy by not creating a faux slow burn either.
The book is set in the English country side for the most part which left me googling historic estates in the UK 😀 she's drawn a picture so beautifully that I kept wishing I could see those places myself.
And as with any Aven Ellis book, we are introduced to new characters who (fingers crossed) will have their own book. And cameos and mentions of previous books (xander!!!)
A solid 5 stars and I'll definitely re-read this 😊
I was lucky to be sent an ARC of A Prince Among Men as part of my Patreon membership for this author
Given that I'm a member of Aven's Patreon community, I think it's safe to say I'm a fan of her work. Her books have brought me so much joy over the last few years, and A Prince Among Men is no different. It's the 5th book in The Modern Royals (run, don't walk to Amazon right now if you haven't read them) and it's the story of the incredibly beautiful, fashion conscious Princess Victoria and the handsome, thoughtful Viscount Ellington - Colin Bennick who had previously told Victoria that she wasn't ready for him. In previous books, Aven has perfectly crafted Victoria as a slightly flighty character due to her having previously been hurt in love. In A Prince Among Men, we see a more mature Victoria who has gone to Balmoral to reflect on recent events in her life. Now, she's ready for Colin! It's beautifully written and so swoony. I don't want to give spoilers away, but it's the perfect summer read and is released on the 17th of August. I 100% loved it and wholeheartedly recommend it 💗
If you're on Patreon, consider getting an Aven Ellis subscription - Aven's is the only one I have on there because it's just brilliant. The value for money for the additional content is phenomenal. She's super active, has lots of bonus content and interaction, and it's so worth it. There are different tiers that make it extremely affordable too - go subscribe - you'll thank me later 💗
I’ve been waiting to see what happens with Colin and Victoria, and this book doesn’t disappoint. The pair met in a previous book, at which time Colin told Victoria she wasn’t ready for him. But he was ready for her, and waited until she was in a place where she could genuinely be with him.
There’s a lot of growth in Victoria from the previous books. She takes the time and puts in the work to figure who she is and what she truly wants from life. She also puts in the work to help Colin and his brother with their family estate, when it represented everything she was trying to get away from.
Colin has become one of my favorite characters that Aven has created. He’s patient and kind, and he wants to know Victoria not to get any closer to the royal family, but because he really cares about her and believes there’s more to her than what the public gets to see. I like that he encourages her to open up and confide in him, and he encourages her to follow her dreams.
This is the fifth book in the Modern Royals series, and while this probably could be read as a standalone, I recommend reading them in order. There are references to when the couple met in a previous book, and to things going on with Victoria’s family. While there’s enough information to get the general gist of what happened, readers will have a better understanding if they’ve read the previous books.
Aven Ellis has outdone herself with A Prince Among Men, and I can’t wait to see what happens next in the series.
“A Prince Among Men” is the fifth book in the Modern Royals series and follows the story of Princess Victoria and Colin, Viscount Ellington. This book was highly anticipated and I’m thrilled to say that Aven does not disappoint.
The book picks up right where “Pitch to Palace” left off. The York family is in crisis mode. Victoria has had everything she has ever known turned upside down. She’s in an area between a rock and a hard place and has sought out the solace of Balmoral to find herself.
Colin has recently returned to the UK after spending a few years abroad in the US studying business. He’s done all he can to prepare to take on his family estate, yet he harbors a lingering fear of what he might find when he finally makes it home.
At Balmoral, Victoria and Colin’s paths cross where they learn that the road to a love and a happily ever after is not always an easy or straight forward path.
Fans of Aven’s books will be jumping out of their seats in anticipation as they watch this couple’s love blossom. It’s one hot and exciting emotional roller coaster.
This book ranks among the top of Aven’s books and is one I can’t recommend highly enough. It will forever hold a special place in my collection for the beautiful way Victoria’s story comes across.
Enjoyable read! I really liked Colin and Victoria - they complemented each other well.
What I like in these books is often there’s not too much drama in terms of the relationship together. Yes, there’s always a kind of big “I’m pushing you away” scene (in all of them really) but it’s always due to external pressures rather than something inherent in them. So, it makes it pretty low-angst and mostly just about the love they find in each other, usually pretty quickly. I just like reading these, they’re like a warm bubble bath - happy and fuzzy ☺️
The books in general have been pretty low on the spice scale, the earlier ones being more fade-to-black style to me but then they started getting a bit more descriptive - this one even moreso. I like/read mostly spicy spice books and I wouldn’t particularly call this one spicy even, but I am just noting here as I could see perhaps people who like it very mild/almost nothing/more toward closed feeling a bit more surprised with this one as it is more descriptive.
I’d have loved to read more of their story, especially with Colin and the house but alas they do have to end somewhere. I can’t wait to read more of the royals and I’ll definitely be reading the spin-off aristocrats ones soon too!
Recommend for a fun, light-hearted read with mild spice and mild drama. If you like tv movie type romances, this will be your jam!
How Aven manages to write such amazing stories one after another, I'll never know. What I do know is that A Prince Among Men was fantastic!
A Prince Among Men is the 5th book in the Modern Royals series, and is apart of the Modern Aristocrats. This can be read as a stand alone, but I highly suggest reading the first four because they're all wonderful stories with characters that you'll come to love. Each book shares a little background that lets you see different sides of Princess Victoria, and Viscount Colin.
The chemistry between the two is glorious, and you're invested in the outcome from the beginning, or if you read Pitch to Palace you want to know more from their interactions there.
I loved Victoria's character devlopment and how she's so much more than what she show's the world, even her family.
Colin, oh Colin - he's a quality Aven Ellis bookboy friend, he's got the looks and the wonderful genuine personality.
These two are an amazing couple and can't wait to see them in future books down the road.
I had the pleasure of reading an ARC of A Prince Among Men. I have to be honest, it did take me a bit to get into this book. I have not really been a fan of Victoria when she was mentioned or was in scenes from previous books. I've been on team Charlie, so Victoria has not been my favorite character.
That being said, Victoria has a lot of change and growth and has become much more likeable. We start off not really knowing much about Colin, but he quickly grows to be one of my favorite of Aven's male leads.
Victoria is obviously going through a difficult time in her life with her parents. Aven does an amazing job navigating her and us through it. Victoria's relationship with Colin did seem to progress from 0 to 60, but that is pretty on par for romance novels.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading about their developing relationship and the commonalities between them and the issues they were both struggling with.
Overall, this is another fantastic additional to the Modern Royals series.
It's settled. I love this series! Finding out there will be more with all these characters in the Modern Aristocrats series makes me so happy.
Victoria and Colin are exactly what they needed for each other. I'm so happy that I finally got to their story because I knew Victoria needed someone more steady. Both Colin and Victoria had a give and take relationship. He was steadier, but she challenged him!
“We don’t have to change the world,” Colin says. “But if we can impact the part we’re in, and make a difference for some people in it, don’t you think that’s equally important?”
Colin put so much into perspective for Victoria. She was struggling with what happened to her parents and feeling inadequate compared to her sisters. Im so glad that not only did she open up to Colin, but she also spoke to a therapist.
One of my favorite things about this series is that when professional help was required, the characters went to therapy. Bella did it, and now Victoria, too. I think it's so important for authors to shine light on therapy. That it's ok to go and can actually help!
I was eagerly awaiting the next book of the Modern Royals series and this absolutely did not disappoint! Victoria and Colin's path to each other was so very real. Colin was absolutely right- the wedding wasn't the right time for them. But when the timing was right... wow! One of the things I love the most about Aven's books is her realness. I loved the emphasis given on Victoria's path to finding herself, and Colin's steadfast support to her pursuing therapy. Not pushing aside the emotional issues of her family and doing the work to figure out how to move forward was very real, and it was so great to see it in a book. It's always good to check in on the rest of the Squad. I still would love to join that group chat! And of course there's now another book to look forward to from some characters you meet in this one.
I am one of the lucky ones who got an advanced reader copy of this book for this review. I know, I know- it's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it.
A Prince Among Books! I really enjoyed Colin and Victoria's story. They are mentioned in previous books in the series and it's so nice to see Victoria getting her own happy ending after reading about her sisters and their happy endings.
Colin and Victoria were not in the right place when they first met, but after some very public issues in Victoria's life she goes away to collect herself and finds herself ready for a relationship with Colin. Both of them have family drama to deal with but will they come together or will that drama make things steamy then drive them apart? Luckily Aven Ellis knows how to tie a story together for that all so happy ending!
Romance ensues and this steamy novel is one I had a hard time putting down (but having a preschooler means that happens more than I'd like). Loved seeing the character updates from former books in the series highlighted in this one as well! Thank you Aven for another terrific book! Keep them coming!
Currently at 17% and I’m bored and struggling. There is a lot of internal/retrospective chat for Victoria and I am not loving it. So far this is flat and it’s not really grabbing me. I have started skimming long paragraphs. I don’t care about all of Colin’s favorite things, oof. The story started out alright, but by 6% it was flatlining for me. Here’s to hoping this gets better.
Update-32% I’ve set this aside for a bit to read another book or two. It has gotten only slightly better as there is now more dialogue. Albeit not great quality in info for moving story forward, but at least it isn’t long winded internal chatter. So far I’m still not connecting with these two and still don’t care about them.
Update-51% more of the same. Wish there would have been a scene from the breakfast with Victoria’s father and Colin. At this point in the book the couple has now participated in sexy times. Slowly onward, so slowly. I’m honestly not sure why I am continuing when I am clearly not enjoying this story.
Alright, I finally finished this and the ending was not satisfying. Totally predictable and blah. The whole story is blah. Then slap in the face I have to sign up for a “the proposal” story for these two. Just no. I hate authors do this. If you write a good and complete story maybe I would actually sign up and follow the author for future stuff, but don’t withhold material. Detest this ploy. The proposal is probably as boring and uneventful as this story anyway. I may only give this 1 star instead of 2 just for this reason. As it stands this is 1.5 stars.
Bella’s book and this one are in a tie for worst in series. I don’t think I’ll read anymore of these. The whole setup of Pippa and Hugo was so blah and predictable. I just can’t anymore. Bye Aven Ellis.
This was another great addition to the series. Like in her other books, we have good character development right away, getting some depth for Victoria. We didn’t know much about Colin before (other than he turned her down) and his character develops quickly as well. It’s not a slow burn at all. Once Victoria realizes she’s ready for a real relationship, (and Colin sees she is) they are both all in. Then it shifts to more family drama. The “third act break up” scene in this storyline was toned down compared to her other books. It wasn’t a true break up, only a fight where they just gave each other space for a few hours and resolved it very maturely. And just like in her other books, she had just enough clues about who the next book will feature couple-wise to get you looking for more.
Loved loved loved spending time in Victoria and Colin’s world. I especially appreciated seeing the world from Princess Victoria’s POV and seeing her own insecurities and challenges. While this book can absolutely be read as a stand alone, thinking about how Victoria and her sister Bella see themselves and each other really had me fascinated. Aven Ellis has really knocked their character development out of the park in both this and Pitch to Palace.
Also really enjoyed exploring Colin and his brother Hugo and their relationship. And meeting Pippa too. All the characters in this book just came alive for me.
Super thankful to Aven Ellis for an advanced review copy and for taking me away into another world as I read this truly lovely book.
Aven Ellis has woven tales of the hockey, baseball, billionaire business, and now the royal world. Victoria has been the enigma of the Modern Royals and shows the greatest depth of character of all the characters in that series.
Though Book 4 in the series, with crossovers from her other series, there is a strong stand alone quality for this book.
Every Aven Ellis book strives to bring the heat, the funny, and the love story to her books. There is depth of characters that is unmatched, especially when one considers the characters knew each other before their "meet cute" or epiphany. But, if you're waiting for the big blowup, there is not one. The grand gestures are there, but built in as a good date, and just cherishing the day to day.
Fans of Aven Ellis will rejoice with this newest book in the Modern Royals series! A Prince Among Men focuses on Princess Victoria and Viscount Colin. We love a strong female character like Victoria, the “royal rebel.” But we also love her showing her softer side in love and family matters and seeing her growth. It may be out outside but the heat isn’t subsiding with this book! I love the continuing story of characters we’ve previously met and the world that Aven creates for them. Also, it should be noted that we also love strong, female authors like Aven Ellis who is continuing to write the books we know and love while undergoing cancer treatment. You are incredible 👏🏻 A Prince Among Men is out now and available on kindle unlimited!
Aven Ellis does what she does best…tell an amazing tale. This is another book in the Modern Royals series. I have waited for Victoria’s chance of happiness. And, boy she did she get her Happy Ending. Colin recognized Victoria was his…but, she wasn’t ready. She needed to find herself to have a chance for a healthy relationship. I personally respected the acknowledgment of mental health in this book. Victoria and Colin’s chemistry and feelings went from zero to sixty. It was smokin!! Aven writes such complex characters with real emotions. Her details are what bring her stories to life. Another hit!!
Book 47 of 2023 — A Prince Among Men by Aven Ellis
I absolutely love Ms. Ellis’ books. Royal watching, beautiful old estates, and a nice romance that always ends with a proposal. It’s a wonderful way to give my brain a break from some of the heavier things I read.
While I recognize this is meant to be simple, I did find this one particularly valid where HRH was concerned. She had a wealth of issues to deal with mentally and that just can’t be done in a few weeks time. I wanted a little more in the way of actually dealing with trauma, but it is a short book :)
I need a sequel. I want to see what happens in Derbyshire! I look forward to Pippa and Hugo!
Colin and Victoria met well before this book started, as they make appearances in many other books in the Avenverse. HRH Victoria, the Princess of York, has a lot going on in her life, her crazy parents being at the top of her list, along with going to uni and being a member of the royal family, and falling in love someone from an aristocratic family was not in the plans, but yet when he shows up at Balmoral, love ensues.
This book is steamy and I could not put it down. I love that so many characters from other stories that Aven had wrote, make appearances or get mentioned in her other books. Thanks again for a great read!!
*I received an advanced readers copy for my review.*
Victoria and Collin have one of my favorite Aven setups EVER. They are around each other in friend groups, and when Victoria is interested in her usual fun, Collin lays “you’re not ready for me” on her. Bam. I was hooked and it wasn’t even their book!
I was invested then and continued to be invested throughout the book. I loved Collin’s random but not random presence at Balmoral. I loved how intentional they were about self growth while also getting to know each other. And I loved the reappearance of Victoria’s favorite pizza, because Aven honored me years ago by putting my favorite, unusual, pizza in her book.
It take so much more than passion and talent to write a book this thoughtful and captivating, and Aven did it amongst some of life’s greatest trials. If you haven’t taken a deep Aven dive yet, here is your sign to do just that! You won’t regret it.
So I love the development Aven has taken as her series take off, with the steam intensifying, and I love Colin and Victoria, but something is holding me back from giving it five stars. The plot is fine, the story is steamy without being raunchy, but it feels....lacking. It just didn't hold my interest as much as Poppy's or Bella's stories did. I think it is more of a me problem, not a book problem. I cannot relate to the heroine as much as I did in previous books.
Note: I received an advanced copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.
What is there to say about Collin and Victoria other than, when you find your person timing matters. We met the idea of Collin and Victoria when he told her she wasn’t ready for him; and boy was he right. When they find themselves ready to explore the idea of each other, they are ready. But ready doesn’t always mean easy. Collin needs to learn to let Victoria know her own choices and heart and Victoria needs to trust Collin. We take on challenges in life and we succeed based on those we can rely on. Another five star book by Aven.
Another great book by Aven Ellis. I resonated so much with both Victoria and Colin and there were so many spots in the book where I just wished I had a physical copy to highlight at the clever things they said or the witty banter between the two of them. I loved that this book took more of the family drama from the last couple and expanded on it. It showed Victoria trying to heal her relationship with her parents. I can't wait to read more about the cousin's side of the family as well and see those relationships fluorish.
This story was fantastic! I have been waiting for Victoria’s story and it did not disappoint. When Collin tells Victoria she wasn’t ready for him yet, I thought these two would never get together. Of course, Aven knocks it out of the ballpark with this royal story and I could not put it down! Each book in this series gets better and better. Aven wrote this book while going through her own struggles and I am in awe of her ability to push through and write this story at the same time. If you haven’t read all of Aven’s stories yet, you definitely need to right away!
I am pleased to provide this review after receiving an advanced reader copy. Aven Ellis gives us a gorgeous glimpse of romance in the English and Scottish countrysides with this book! She brings the reader into a world of Royal and aristocratic life, and once again provides them with realistically flawed characters growing into their own maturity. Embedded within these journeys are some steamy scenes! The main theme of Aven Ellis’ books is love, and we definitely move along with these characters in their quest for love and acceptance in their lives. Bravo!
I was so eager to read this book and it greatly exceeded my expectations! Victoria is the rebel princess who falls unexpectedly for a viscount. One thing I love about Aven’s books it that the characters aren’t perfect, but have their internal struggles that they work through together as a couple, which is so realistic and admirable. I may not be a princess or an aristocrat, yet I find these characters relatable. Another wonderful story that I will definitely read over and over! Thank you, Aven Ellis for continuing to share your creative talents with us!
I read this as an advance copy. I dont know who I love more, Victoria or Colin. These are 2 characters that are modern, hard working, and knew what they wanted. Colin took on his role head-on. It's hard to do, being thrown to the wolves and come out leading the pack. Victoria is someone I would love to know. Her inspiration is so much like mine, all around her. I love this book!
