She writes contemporary romance as Nell Dixon and historical cozy crime set in 1930's Dartmouth as Helena Dixon. She is represented by the Kate Nash Literary Agency.
After meeting Kitty Underhay in the first book of the series, in which she helped solve the case of a missing ruby along with the handsome Captain Matthew Bryant, I've been looking forward to reading her next exploit.
Kitty lives and works with her grandmother running their family hotel, The Dolphin. Kitty's father left her and her mother when Kitty was young and her mother disappeared when she was six, so she though her grandmother and her Aunt Livy were the only family she has. However, she recently learnt that her father's sister is married to Lord Medford and lives at nearby Enderley Hall, and that she has a cousin close to her age, called Lucy. When Lady Medford invites her to visit, she packs her bag and along with Alice, one of the hotels maids, departs for what she hopes will be a restful holiday after her previous adventure.
Of course it is not to be! Not long after she arrives, some important secret government papers are stolen and a member of the household is found dead. The police inspector calls in Matthew, who is now a private investigator, to help with the investigating the large household. It was good to see Kitty and Matt back together again, although while both of them realise they have feelings for the other, Matt will have to allow Kitty to make her own choices about the risks she takes, before the relationship can develop further. This was an enjoyable cosy mystery within a stately home setting with a suspenseful chase at the end. Now Kitty has found out a bit more about her mother from Lady Medford, it will be interesting to see what happens to her next.
Having very much enjoyed #1, Murder at the Dolphin Hotel, I was keen to continue reading about Kitty and her friend Matt so I jumped at the chance to read this second book in the series.
Kitty is visiting Enderley Hall to meet her newly acquired family but she is not destined to have a nice quiet holiday. When thefts and murders begin to occur Kitty quickly pulls in Matt to assist her in discovering the culprit. I like the way the author keeps Kitty's activities in line with how things really would have been. She accepts that the men run the enquiry and she has to play a behind the scenes role.
This is not to say however that Kitty is in any way down trodden. Her almost romance with Matt will never go anywhere unless he accepts that Kitty is not a woman who is going quietly stay home and do as she is told. There is a lot of character development ahead in this regard.
I see that there is a third book already in progress with the probable title Murder at the Playhouse. I am looking forward to it already.
My thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Persuaded to visit Enderley Hall where her previously unknown aunt and cousin lived, Kitty Underhay and her maid Alice made the journey. There were house guests as well as staff, along with her new family members. It was when the elderly Nanny Thoms addressed Kitty by her mother’s name that she knew the people in this house must know more about her mother’s disappearance all those years ago.
When Lord Medford discovered his important documents were missing from the safe in his library, the events that followed were shocking. Nanny Thoms had fallen to her death at the bottom of the stairs and Kitty’s friend and fellow sleuth from the terrible times at the Dolphin, ex-army captain Matthew Bryant arrived to assist Inspector Greville with his enquiries. As Matt and Kitty did their best to find immediate answers, worse was to follow. Should Kitty return to the Dolphin in order to remain safe? She didn’t want to abandon Matt but she knew the danger was high…
Murder at Enderley Hall is the 2nd in A Miss Underhay Mystery series by Helena Dixon, and once again I thoroughly enjoyed it. Kitty and Matt are great characters and while there are plenty of clues along the way, the twists and turns make working out the murderer quite difficult. An entertaining Historical Cozy Mystery, Murder at Enderley Hall is one I recommend highly.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
In this second installment in the A Miss Underhay Mystery series, Kitty is invited to spend time with her father's family at Enderley Hall. But when she arrives with her maid Alice, they immediately sense that something is off. Everyone seems to be on edge, and Viola, one of the house guests, claims to have seen a man spying on her through a window. When important papers are stolen from her uncle's safe, she calls Matt, a former army captain who helped her solve a previous murder, to see if he can help determine who the thief is. When the family's nanny and a house guest, is murdered, Matt and Kitty become determined to catch the culprit.
I think this is a wonderful addition to the series. Set in the English countryside, this is a charming and engaging read, with a great cast of characters and a gripping mystery. The historical background is well researched and will instantly transport you back to 1930s England. Matt and Kitty complemented each other well, and I look forward to their relationship developing in future books. We also learn new details about the disappearance of Kitty's mother. This book was a page-turner and I will definitely be reading future books in this series. If you enjoy historical cozies, then I highly recommend this book.
I received an ARC from Bookouture through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is the second book in the Kitty Underhay series, and another lovely story. In this episode, Kitty goes on holiday to meet her paternal Aunt and meet a cousin she had never known existed. However, coinciding with the visit is a series of unfortunate events that prompt Kitty to call her friend from book 1, Matthew Bryant, an ex-army captain who now dabbles in some private sleuthing. A murder mystery without all the graphic violence that will appeal to a broad range of readers.
This is the second in the Miss Underhay mystery series which features Kitty Underhay, a young woman living in the 1920’s. In this book Kitty has travelled to spend the week with her aunt and family. She learned of this family connection in the first book of the series when she briefly encountered her estranged father. An on-going thread for both books is Kitty’s search for what happened to her mother who disappeared at the time of the first world war. While she is interested in meeting the new-found family, Kitty is also hoping to learn more about her mother’s whereabouts just before she disappeared. There is a little progress on this thread, but it continues to be a mystery Kitty is likely to pursue in future books. Early in Kitty’s visit, some important papers belonging to her uncle are stolen. Suspicion bounces among the other houseguests, including the Austrian woman there to restore a mural, the brother and sister who are visiting Kitty’s cousin, the secretary to Kitty’s uncle as well as the gruff man who is there to help Kitty’s aunt restore her gardens. Suspicion falls on each one in tern as Kitty calls in her friend Captain Mathew Bryant to help in the investigation. Throughout the book, the author teases possible strengthening in the relationship between Kitty and Mathew. There are other subplots that lend clues and red herrings to the story, including the propaganda statements made by one guest, the relationships developing between two couples, and the secrecy of Kitty’s uncles work. All combine to create a story that is part historical fiction, part espionage, and eventually murder. None of the outcomes are particularly surprising, including the identity of the murderer, but the story is well told and is an interesting, easy read. The characters are engaging enough to hold your interest and the book is well written. A good airplane/beach/cabin read, this book can be enjoyed either by reading straight through or in a setting where the reader is occasionally interrupted. My thanks to Bookoutour Publishers and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced digital read copy in exchange for an honest review.
Murder at Enderley Hall is book two in Helena Dixon's Miss Underhay series. When Kitty Underhay realizes she has her father's family nearby, she decides to visit them at Enderley Hall to learn more about them. However, on the first night, the Nanny dies, and important papers are stolen from her Uncle's study. Kitty Underhay calls her friend, Captain Matthew Bryant, to come and help her investigate the Nanny's death. The readers of Murder at Enderley Hall will continue to follow Kitty Underhay and Captain Matthew Bryant's investigation to discover what happens.
Murder at Enderley Hall is a historical, cozy mystery and the first book I have read by Helena Dixon. I enjoyed reading this book and will read another book in this series. Reading this book, I learned about living in English high society in 1933. I laughed at how the four-legged characters interact with the human characters. I love Helena Dixon's portrayal of her characters and their interactions. Murder at Enderley Hall is well-written and researched. I like Helena Dixon's description of the settings of Murder at Enderley Hall, which complemented the book's plot.
Let’s play a drinking game: Every time Kitty says to herself or another character “I’m going to ask so and so to tell me more about my mother” and then they are conveniently interrupted, take a sip.
Actually please don’t do this. You will end up in a hospital.
I’m all for drawing out the mystery of a character’s backstory, but this has become irritatingly cartoonish. If the issue needs to remain unsolved through multiple books in a series, that’s fine, but I don’t need 50 failed attempts to solve it in each book.
There’s not much left to this particular installment once you remove that either. I rather enjoyed the first novel in this series, but this one—from the progress on the backstory to the mystery contained in this book only—was a flop.
The narrative is slow, dragging badly and bloated with filler. I don’t expect riveting action or complex procedural elements in this type of mystery, but when weighed against others of its ilk or even the first book in this series, this one lags behind badly.
*I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.*
Kitty cannot help but think of some very difficult experiences with a previous murder that happened at her hotel. Having inherited it from her grandmother, who has taken a back seat to heavier responsibilities, Kitty certainly has her hands full. Despite her new duties, Kitty proved to be quite successful at her turn with being an amateur detective. She had quite a bit of assistance from ex-army captain Matthew Bryant. Matt was hired by Kitty’s grandmother due to disturbing events at the hotel. Although things look okay for now, Kitty and Matt are sure to cross paths again - and soon.
Kitty has taken a break away from the hotel to try and connect with relatives she was previously unaware of, and so she sets off to visit Enderley Hall. Kitty is extremely excited to have the chance to meet her fathers family. With a house party on the agenda, her eagerness intensifies. So, she sets off with her maid Alice. Things start off quite nicely. However, her eager visit is quickly thwarted when some very important papers were stolen.
Kitty knows she must look into the theft, and doesn’t hesitate to call on Matt for his assistance once again. The pair must work hard and fast, especially when the elderly Nanny Thoms is found lying dead at the bottom of the stairs. With Inspector Grenville also on hand taking the lead in the investigation, it is soon hoped that they can get to the bottom of things.
Murder at Enderley Hall is the second book in the delightful cozy series, A Miss Underhay Mystery. I love Kitty and Matt together. Considering the time period in which this book was written, Kitty was often forced to take a step back when investigating the murders, especially the inquiries. It was still pretty much a man’s world at that time. Yet the pair work remarkably well together. Between their obvious affection for one another, and in part displayed by excellent body language, they get the job done.
Not only do Kitty and Matt pay constant vigil to whatever it is before them, their pasts continue to converge together in such a way that I certainly hope they find a future together. This no doubt will prove quite difficult, as Matt’s war experiences - and memories- were horrible. Combined with the fact that he previously lost his wife and daughter, this gives Matt much to deal with before opening his heart again.
I thoroughly enjoyed this entry in what promises to be an excellent cozy mystery series. I love the time period and the locations, and also the snippets of Kitty's and Matt's pasts that we are sure to learn more about in future books.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
It was great that it started with an act of thievery, that then escalated into murder. Were these two related?
I didn't read the first in the series but it is evident that the main characters, Kitty and Matt, work well together and have built a strong friendship. I love how the author doesn't give us a full picture of either, the reader is still left with questions about both, although the author does reveal a little more. While the crimes take place in her aunt's home, just after Kitty's arrival. That's not why she's there though...rather she is looking to get to know more about her family. And her mother! This dimension is a lovely touch, adding depth without detracting from the main story.
The story is set in 1933, the context of the "Great War" provides depths to the characters, who they are, the choices they make and the way they respond to the changing circumstances.
I had expected Kitty to be more directly involved throughout the story, her keen insights were essential to the resolution of the case and many of her actions fly in the face of accepted behaviour for the times. (Always an element that makes a book more enjoyable for me!)
My thanks to #Netgalley, the publisher #Bookouture and the author for my advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. I am very grateful.
"Murder at Enderley Hall" is a good follow-up in the "Miss Underhay Mystery" series. At the end of book one, Kitty found out about her relatives on her father's side, and in this new story she goes off to meet them at their big country manor. Once there, a theft happens and soon several murders follow up, so Kitty enlists the help of her friend, Captain Matthew Bryant. What follows is the typical classical murder mystery that will delight all fans of the genre.
I liked how we get to learn a bit more about both main characters backstories, specially Matt, as it serves to explain some of his actions, and although I don't agree much with some of them, I gotta keep in mind that the story is set in the 1930s. I love how Kitty is becoming such a strong woman on her own, showing her nonconformity with what it could be expected of a woman at the time.
I found that the mystery aspect of the book dragged along a bit in the middle of the story, probably due to the fact that the pool of suspects was so limited. In this installment Kitty is not so involved in the investigation, but for all the insight she shows troughout the story, I couldn't understand how she could act so stupidly around the end, once the villain is about to be revealed (I'm sure you'll know what I'm talking about if you've read it).
After that final scene between both MC, I feel like knowing what will happen with both Kitty and Matt in book 3.
3,5 ⭐️
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I did want to follow up with the two main characters of this series after the first book, but this golden age cozy mystery is too long on lightness for me and will not hold my interest for further reading. In this episode Kitty is invited to Lord Medford's estate for a visit with her newfound uncle, aunt and cousin. Lady Medford is the sister of her long absent father she had reunited with in book one. Of course we get the country house murders and the same police inspector from book one and Kitty plays a key role in the deduction game.
This second book in the Miss Kitty Underhay cozy mystery series continues the summer of 1933. Kitty has been invited to visit her paternal aunt and uncle at Enderley Hall where she will spend some time getting to know her father's sister and her cousin, Lucy. She hopes to find out more about what happened to her mother who seems to have visited there before vanishing many years ago. What Kitty does not plan for is murder. The first untoward event is the disappearance of some important papers, a chemical formula, from her uncle's safe. Then, beloved Nanny Thoms is found dead at the bottom of a staircase. The household is in an uproar, but fortunately, Kitty has the attentions of Captain Matthew Bryant - -a new "friend" who had helped Kitty and her grandmother at the Dolphin in the previous episode. Of course Kitty wants to be involved in the investigation as Matt and the police try to find the thief and the killer. NO SPOILERS.
This is pretty tame fare and faithful to period details. I found it a very fast read and enjoyed the chance of pace to my usual grisly thrillers. I look forward to reading more in the series though I could have done without Muffy and without the frustrated romance.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read and review.
With everything going on these very crazy times that we are living in, I was so thankful to dive back into another cozy mystery by Helena Dixon that continues with our beloved Kitty Underhay and Matthew Bryant! Now if you didn’t read Murder at the Dolphin Hotel, don’t worry! Murder at Enderley Hall can most definitely be read as a standalone, but if you have the time, I highly recommend both!
Kitty Underhay is invited to spend time with her father’s family at Enderley Hall. Following the chaos that ensued at The Dolphin Hotel previously, Kitty is ready for a change of pace. At the insistence of her aunts, Kitty brings along her chambermaid Alice and sets off for Enderley Hall.
Immediately, Kitty realizes that something is not quite right in the atmosphere. When the elderly Nanny Thoms mistakenly calls Kitty by her mother’s name, she realizes that this family may know more regarding her mother’s disappearance all those years ago.
When important documents go missing from Kitty’s uncle’s safe, she enlists the help of ex-army captain Matt Bryant to see if they can capture the thief. When Nanny Thoms is suspiciously found dead, Kitty and Matt are determined to solve the murder even though danger lurks close by.
Helena has crafted another wonderful whodunit mystery full of twists and turns (and a few red herrings) that transports you to a picturesque 1930s English countryside. I love both Kitty’s and Matt’s characters and how they two of them balance each other with Kitty’s intuition and Matt’s previous military experience.
I can’t wait to see what the next adventure awaits next for Kitty!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for providing a review copy. This did not influence my review. All opinions are my own.
In a very nice style of the Lady Julia detective series, we have Kitty with a colorful history being reconciled with an aunt and uncle who have been estranged for years. The reception is a bit strained, though her cousin Lucy is very warmly welcoming and Kitty tries to settle in for a short vacation.
Kitty has just helped to solve one murder mystery and she is just wanting a quiet time with family.
However murder seems to follow her around and when her Uncle loses some very important papers relating to national security, it is apparent that the thief is one of the house party and the investigation starts. The murder of the elderly Nanny sets off a chain of events leading to another murder and then another making it apparent that the murderer is covering all his bases and any odds that anyone knows anything.
With the help of senior detectives and Matt who helped Kitty in her earlier case, they try to flush out the murderer and the case evolves. A touch of romance all around and quite a lot of detail on how a aristocratic family operates.
Reminiscent of the age and a well told detective story.
This is the second book in the A Miss Underhay Mystery series by Helena Dixon.
I found an easy likability about the relationship between Kitty Underhay and the Army man turned private investigator, Matt Bryant. There wasn’t enough alone time between the two of them for my taste but I figure that wasn’t so kosher back then. Their budding relationship plus the mystery of Nanny Thomas’s death paired well together.
I was smitten by the whole series almost from the beginning. I definitely need to read book one, MURDER AT THE DOLPHIN HOTEL immediately. I think I may have even bought it on my Kindle around Christmas time. I will have to check.
I enjoyed the addition of the lady’s maid, Alice, although, I wonder what distress the other woman would have put on Kitty if she had brought the lady her mother wanted her to bring in the beginning. That would have been a hoot and a half.
When I think back on the scenes with a lot of characters, I am reminded of some classic Hercule Poirot moments from Agatha Christie. I guess this would be set in a similar time period, so it is no wonder I am comparing.
Just loved this whole thing.
The ending killed me, though. Not about the revelation of whodunit, that was indeed surprising. But how Matt handles things right before THE END, did me in. I need the next book in the series right away!
If you love a good cozy mystery, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.
I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.
Matt and Kitty were back in the summer of 1933 investigating the disappearance of important papers from a safe and a murder mystery. Were both connected, or was it connected to Kitty's parents?
My second book by author Helena Dixon, the entire setting of the Enderley Hall gave an eerie feeling to the prose. Kitty's instincts were right when she felt something nasty was afoot. The author's writing kept the pace rolling on as new details came to light. Another death added to the need to solve the mystery.
Past and present overlapped when the murdered lady called Kitty by her mother's name before her death. Though it was Matt who was the prime investigator, Kitty too ably helped him providing him various insights about the people the house. Her intelligence sparkled at the end as she did solve the mystery, quite clever were the clues weaved into the story. Kitty did take some risks but lived to narrate her tale.
This was a fun whodunit where a few red herrings added to the suspense. I would like to say I knew who was the killer, but I actually didn't as the author had hidden the perp well. Overall, a fun read.
Book 2 in this cozy mystery series and I enjoyed it very much.
I read the first book too and I liked that a lot also, but this one even topped it. I already met the two main characters Matt and Kitty and some people of their entourage and I was happy so see them connect again.
We know a bit about their backgrounds, but the author has left us partialy in the dark. To find out the rest, there is nothing left for us to do then to keep coming back to satisfy our curiosity. 🙂
Kitty is fun. She is brave, but often acts before she thinks in the heat of the moment. Matt, on the other hand, is concerned and thinks maybe a bit too much. They really complement each other, but they still need to figure out the right balance.
A very nice story that made me gamble on the wrong horse again.
Normally I prefer more modern settings, but the covers reel me in every time and the storytelling is so good that I don’t mind about the date anymore. 5 stars
Kitty only knew that her mother disappeared in 1916 and that her father is rather disreputable, so it's surprising to find out that she has other relatives living nearby. They are very welcoming, but her aunt simply doesn't discuss Kitty's mother. When some valuable scientific papers go missing Kitty calls on the man who has helped before and he arrives about the same time as the first body turns up. Let the sleuthing begin! Danger, suspicions, and other murders ensue. Great characters and a smooth plot full of misdirection and red herrings. I requested and received a free ebook copy from Bookouture via NetGalley. Thank you!
This book is perfectly fine as a stand alone but I liked it so much that I went ahead and bought the earlier book!
When Kitty Underhay receives an invitation to meet with her father's side of the family at the stately Enderley Hall, she doesn't know what to expect. Meeting her cousin, aunt, and uncle that she just found out about brings up many emotions. She's looking forward to staying with them and hopes they may be able to provide missing clues to her mother's disappearance many years ago.
As the conversations flow, Kitty senses an undercurrent of mystery at the family estate. When a beloved nanny takes a deadly fall, the police are called in to solve the case and Kitty brings in her friend Matthew to assist with the investigations. Tensions are high as the clues unfold, putting everyone at risk. Will Kitty's sleuthing bring an end to this family reunion?
Author Dixon weaves another clever whodunnit in this family reunion mystery. I enjoy the characters, plots, and settings in this cozy series. I can't wait to see what Miss Underhay is up to in the next book! A great read for cozy mystery fans, highly recommended!
I bought this series on a whim and I'm so glad that I did, the writing is great and the storyline holds your interest. What started out as a country house party ends up being the stage for murder and theft. Kitty and Matt get caught up in the investigation while meeting Kitty's long lost relatives. This is a hard to put down book.
3 1/2 stars really. I like the characters, although there are so many of them I had a hard time keeping them straight, which was complicated by the fact that sometimes they are referred to by title (Lady, Mrs., Lord, Captain, Mr. etc) and sometimes by first names. But I enjoyed it; it was a twisty mystery.
A very involved, intricate tale set around the theft of some very important papers detailing a discovery which could help save many lives should there be another war. Kitty is invited to stay with her father's family whom she hadn't heard of until recently and joins their small house party. When the theft is discovered she naturally recommends Matt to help solve it.
Enjoyed this second in an historical cozy mystery series set in 1933 England. Interesting characters and the plot moved along at a good pace. I did figure out the mystery about halfway into the book but it was still a good quick read. Can be read as a stand alone. Clean read.
