Midlife Spirits #2

A Ghost of a Chance

Rate this book
Living in a haunted house is going to be the death of me…
Potentially literally.

In an attempt to cleanse whatever entity Trina and I let into my house after our bout with a Ouija board, things have only gotten worse.

When the entity begins to sap Drake’s strength, I realize I have to do something, and that something needs to be done now…

While Drake does drive me crazy with his pretentious airs, his womanizing ways, and his jealousy, the idea of coming home to an empty house leaves me feeling… well, empty. Yes, it’s true—I’m pretty fond of my ghostly Casanova.

Meanwhile, whatever this entity is, it’s getting stronger and more aggressive. It appears to be mimicking the attacks of the Axeman, a murderer who terrorized New Orleans over one hundred years earlier.

And there’s only so much Ryan can do to help me, considering he’s corporeal.

When forced to make a decision to protect Drake, I’ll face a consequence that could put my blossoming relationship with Ryan on a forever hold.

I’m a huge fan of anything paranormal and I always have been. I get super excited whenever they have those Twilight Zone Marathon days and anything ghost or vampire related will always attract my attention.

My interests are varied but aside from writing, I’m most excited about traveling. I’m extremely fortunate to have been able to live in England and Scotland, both places really having a profound effect on my books.

Thanks for checking out my books and I hope you enjoy them! Happy Haunting!

Cleansing is needed to clear Peyton's home of malevolent spirits after they are allowed in from use of a Ouija board. Peyton seeks professional help and is worried because Drake is becoming weaker. In order to help him, she has to make a sacrifice. Will it harm her growing relationship with Ryan? Peyton is growing in her self confidence since her divorce and it is a joy to read as her character blossoms.

More, more, I need more!

Some others are commenting on how the story is the same as book 1, but that was a mistake that has been corrected, at least, it must have been, because I had the right file.

I can always appreciate the use of humor, in life and in books. And that was well done. It’s well written and now I need more! Which I can, because the next installment is already out!

A Haunting, A Possession and an Exorcism. Not the settled, quiet life Peyton had hoped for.

This is book two of Midlife Spirits, a new Paranormal Women’s Fiction series of short novels from HP Mallory. The book is set in New Orleans, USA. There is some romantic interest but no descriptive scenes of a sexual nature.

The story is set in the Garden District of New Orleans and follows the life of 44 year old Peyton Clark, who recently moved to the area after divorcing her abusive ex and inheriting an old Antebellum house from her great aunt.

Following the news that her house has recently become home to a malevolent entity, Peyton employs the services of a local Witch and Warlock in an attempt to remove the intruder and close the portal that she and Ryan’s sister had unwittingly opened during a Ouija board session. Is it too late? The entity has already attacked her once and now it wants her.

Ryan can’t decide how he feels for Peyton. He likes her a lot but his feelings are still tied up in grief for his late wife and he’s struggling to get past the guilt. Meanwhile, Peyton becomes increasingly concerned about the welfare of Drake, her resident ghost; he is the only thing protecting her from the entity but his energies are being depleted by it and its not clear how much longer he can continue. Drastic measures are needed but can Peyton bring herself to go through with them and should she continue to involve Ryan?

This book has wonderful descriptions of paranormal activity, haunting, exorcism and a good dose of frustrated romantic feelings. As ever, HP Mallory’s fluent style of writing draws the reader in. There is a good mixture of fast paced and calm scenes, which help to make the reader feel like they are being taken on a journey. The character development and world building are good and I find myself quite invested in what happens to Peyton, Ryan and Drake.

The reading order for this series is as follows:
Book 1: Afraid of the Dark
Book 2: A Ghost of a Chance

intense

A Ghost of Chance continues where the previous book left off actually giving the reader a good stopping point to where the first book stopped. Although this book stops similarly the storyline came to an end with the reader wanting to know what happened next. There are scenes in which issues from the first are brought up yet here it’s just go with the flow (Ryan never mentioned his ex wife in the first book at all now he does). The book however is a thrill ride and hard to put down with more ghost action.

Fantastic

I love the humor laced throughout all the seriousness of the storyline. I look forward to reading what happens for Peyton next as well. That was on neck of an event that they went through, and H.P. Mallory has done a fantastic job with the writing, it was so easy to picture everything so clearly in my mind. I can't wait to read how everything blows up in her face when she finally spills the beans about what's going on too! So excited for more!

It's the same damn book as "are you afraid of the dark" it's supposed to be book 2

It's not book 2, it's the same story as book 1 word for word. She really plopped you into a story without any background. I was hoping book 2 would give that but I am very, very disappointed in the H.P. Mallory. I feel I could do a better and more complete story in an afternoon on my laptop. 🤢🤮💩💩💩💩💩

Cliff Hanger

I like the story and characters. However, I hate cliff hangers. I got the 1st book of the serial free. Then I did purchased the 2nd book. When I found out there were 11 parts to get the full story. I decided not to continue. Each additional part was $2.99. That was too expensive for me to pay for a complete story ebook. That is why my rating is only 3 stars.

Better

A little bit of closure? Still not sure all is well and honestly, not where I expected things to go. Peyton knows Drake is real and Ryan knows Peyton talks to him and that a malevolent spirit is haunting her house trying to harm her, but not all secrets have been shared. I hope the evil is vanquished for their sake.

A continued story

It took me a long time to finish this story. Although I know there is more to it my attention has been drawn elsewhere lately and that has nothing to do with how well H.P. Mallory is as a writer. I am certain I will pick up on Peyton, Ryan, and Drake's story another day. However, don't let me stop any of you from reading this series. It really is good!

It's fine

So the books are good. But they are short and cut oddly. This and the first should have been one book. If I had bought this, rather than read it through KU, I would be very upset I had to buy 2 books to get 1 story.

Peyton, Ryan and a ghost

A haunted house with a good spirit and an evil one lurking around. Peyton and contractor Ryan are attracted to each other. However, the spirit of the police officer Drake is also attracted to her.

Two of three

Its a fun, fast paced story but I really think it could have been put together with the first book. It's still a light weight read that's good for an evening's entertainment. The spiritual aspects were right on and I appreciate that attention to details.

Definitely Paranormal

A good read, A Ghost Of A Chance from the Midlife Spirits Ghost Romance Series was entertaining. Peyton, Ryan, and Drake are closer than they all imagine and I look forward to the next book in the series to find out Ryan's response to Drake.

Still going strong

The story continues to be very interesting. It’s clear that the heroine is painting herself into a corner, and I’m expecting/fearing repercussions. However, her actions are consonant with her backstory.

I really enjoyed this book. I still love the characters, and I can't wait to see what happens when Peyton fully opens up to Ryan about what happened. I just wish there had been more Trina!

I'm going to contact the author because book 2 is identical to book 1. Not sure what the problem is but I purposely re-read it to make sure there were not differences.

I listened to the audiobook for this book and I was not a fan of the narrator. Between the narrator and the writing being a little boring to me, I'm not listening to any more of this series.

Peyton, Ryan and Drake ... O' My! The "love triangle" is Delightfully Delicious... In a paranormal kind of way!

This is one of my all time favorite stories from Mallory. She gives us just enough creep factor to keep readers on their toes and just enough naughtiness to satisfy the sweet tooth cravings!

A must read from this author!

After Peyton and Trina played with the Ouija Board things start to go strange . The entity starts to drain Drake's strength. They have to find out what is going on and get the entity out of the house . The entity is taking on the characteristics of a hundred year old murderer the Axeman . Who terrorized New Orleans . Ryan is trying to help but there is only so much he can do well cause he is alive . Will everything work out or will Ryan and Peyton's relationship be on hold indefinitely.
Peyton and the gang are back and honestly funnier then ever . Peyton is trying hard to keep Drake from peeking in on her relationship with Ryan and also to keep everyone safe. She is sassy and ready for a fight You really get to see Peyton's flirty fun side when she is with Drake We also get to see her soft romantic side with Ryan . Drake is well he is still as cocky as ever and oh so sexy too . He is slowly loosing himself . Then there is Ryan the sweetest guy ever , he is tall and just sexy with a lopsided grin. We also get to meet some voodoo priests who add so much fun to the story.
Ok this is book two and I must say the authors packed a lot into this story . There is romance . voodoos . dark magic and lots of laugher . The author seems to have such fun writing this book. i read this while at the pool in an afternoon . I have never giggled so much in my life . The characters are so well written and complex . The author has created a great universe where you get sucked in by the end of chapter one . This series would be great for your summer reading list .

OMG

It just keeps going on. I hate characters that hide important things from the people they profess to love, knowing that they will upset that person. I don't honestly know how much longer this can hold my attention.

After Trina’s experiment with an Ouija board in Peyton’s newly inherited home let something sinister in, it’s time for Peyton to figure out how to remove the entity. Peyton heads to the only place she knows may be able to help – the local voodoo shop. With absolutely no experience and little assistance from the shop employee, Peyton embarks on the quest to cleanse her home. Except, Trina pops in right before Peyton and Ryan being the cleanse. Now, the entity is even more aggressive and Drake, her resident ghost, is no longer safe, and neither is she. It’s time to hit the heavies and the only thing Peyton can do to save Drake, is drastic and may hinder any potential relationship with Ryan indefinitely.

A Ghost of Chance is fun, romantic, intense, and scary. A lot goes on this book between Peyton and the entity, Peyton and Drake, and Peyton and Ryan. I love Peyton. She's fun, interesting, and her chemistry with Ryan is off the charts. Her relationship with Drake is flirty, fun, and dreamy, although a bit intense in this story. The continuation of the long-ago murder mystery and how it’s woven into book 2 is interesting. I found the book completely engaging, fast paced, and I couldn't put it down. I'm excited to read the next book.
