A short collection of first hand experiences laid out not like a novel but more like a window into a brief period. You get a microcosm of all the war's memories and experiences here: Lost Cause, emancipationist, and reconciliationist. I think it would make for a great novel.
The author has done a nice job of stitching together first-hand accounts and primary source documents to create this brief (144-page) narrative, which reads like a novella.
