Cheers Geoff!: Tales from the Touchline

Rate this book
Geoff Shreeves has been the pitchside reporter on the biggest games of soccer for several decades. Cheers Geoff! is the funny, moving and hugely entertaining story of his career spent up close with the beautiful game.

There are just a handful of people that have been ever present for the thirty years the Premier League has existed, but only one person has been at the very epicenter of the action for the entire Geoff Shreeves. He is the most renowned and respected pitchside reporter within the media and the game itself. From helping to reshape the sport's landscape, to signalling the very first ball to be kicked on Sky’s Premier League coverage, to facing down Sir Alex Ferguson’s wrath on countless occasions, whilst also interviewing the biggest names, Geoff’s presence has given him a unique viewpoint, from the closest of quarters, into the very heart of the game.

His interviews with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham and Alan Shearer have become the stuff of legend, but it is the close personal relationships Geoff has built with Sir Alex, José Mourinho, Arsène Wenger, Steven Gerrard and many more of the game’s star names that set him apart. Beyond soccer, Geoff recalls his encounters with the likes of Sir Michael Caine, Robbie Williams and Mike Tyson, as well as the time when Mick Jagger gave him a lift home from a World Cup in his private jet. For over thirty years, Geoff has been an integral part of the sport, respected by everybody in the game while still asking the toughest questions. A natural storyteller, Geoff brings an astonishing catalogue of tales to life via his unique brand of experience, insight and humor.

This gentle and touching memoir is perhaps more reminiscent of a good after dinner speech than anything else.

While mild and uncontroversial, it feels like the ideal gift for that dad, uncle or even grandad with a love of the game, who has been glued to Sky’s coverage during the last 30 odd years.

No shortage of name dropping and insights from a man who has been up close and personal to some of the most iconic sporting moments in the modern game.

Cheers, Geoff!

Geoff Shreeves is best known for being the cheerful touchline reporter on Sky Sports for the last 30 years.
His main role was to conduct the pre and post match interviews with managers and players, as well as report on any intuitive news such as reasons for substitutions or reactions to certain events from the coaches technical areas.
Along with commentator Martin Tyler, and Soccer Saturday anchorman Jeff Stelling, Geoff is synonymous with, and will always remain a legend of, Sky Sports’ football coverage.
When it was announced that Geoff had decided to write an autobiography, it was immediately one that I was interested in reading as I felt it had the ability to be insightful and entertaining. Whilst I chose not to read it immediately upon receipt, it is a book that I have been looking forward to getting into for some time.
In his book, Geoff briefly touches on his upbringing, his career prior to joining Sky and how he came to the role. Following this he moves on to providing insight on the behind the scenes of his role, some of the tales from his matchday access all areas, and interactions with some of football’s biggest names.
I’ll be honest and say that I thought he may be able to go further in sharing more stories of what I’m sure he must have witnessed over the years from being in parts of the stadium that fans could only dream of. However, as he states a few times he has built a career out of being a familiar and trustworthy face who is never likely to “sell out” on those he has interactions with on a regular basis.
Regardless of this, I have found this a thoroughly insightful, entertaining and enjoyable read. Should Geoff decide to write a second book sharing more of the stories I’m sure he must have been privy to, I would buy and read it without a second thought.

Chummy narration, very good on mental health and music therapy (he chairs the Nordoff-Robbins charity) and plenty of name-dropping from the man with the mic.
