Murphy Brothers Story #8

Morning by Morning: A Murphy Brothers Story

“You were built for hard things.”

Two years after losing the love of his life to cancer, Connor Murphy is slowly emerging from the darkness of grief, but he wrestles with fears about how he and his twelve-year-old son Reid will manage to navigate Reid’s teenage years on their own. Connor’s single-minded prayer has become, please, no more changes, but when single mom Jade Beck arrives to take on the job Sadie Murphy had done before her death, it becomes clear God has stamped his prayer request denied.

Jade Beck’s prayers were answered when she received the offer of a job as Lakeshore Lodge’s marketing and customer relations manager. Or so she thought. After a messy divorce, she and her two children need a safe place to land and find the peace their lives have lacked, but once she meets her abrupt, brooding supervisor, Mr. Connor Murphy, her fresh start suddenly looks a bit…stale. She’s already endured fifteen years living with a condescending man, and she won’t be a doormat anymore.

As the challenges of single parenting continually push them together, Jade and Connor’s relationship gradually transforms from cold and awkward to respectful and mutually supportive…and eventually to something deeper and more tender. But navigating these changes forces them to deal with the hurts and disappointments of their pasts and confront the fears that hold them captive.

Surrendering their hopes and fears to God has never felt so daunting. Can they learn to see the goodness of God, even in their broken paths, and trust that morning by morning, God’s tender mercies are ever new?

Morning by Morning, book 8 in the Murphy Brothers Stories, is a complex, emotional story of hope after heartache, of deeply moving, tender romance after devastating loss, and God’s faithful love, even in life’s hardest place.

Jennifer Rodewald is passionate about the Word of God and the powerful vehicle of story. Four kids and her own personal superman make her home in southwestern Nebraska delightfully chaotic.

Born in Colorado, she experienced both the seclusion of rugged mountain living and the busy streets of a Denver suburb during her growing up years. Somewhere in the middle of college, she married a Husker and found her way back to the quiet lifestyle of a rural area, which suits just fine.

Blessed with a robust curiosity, Jen loves to research. Whether she’s investigating the history of a given area, the biography of a Christian icon, or how nature declares the glory of God, her daily goal is to learn something new. Aiming to live with boundless enthusiasm, her creed is vision, pursuit, and excellence.

Jen lives and writes in a lovely speck of a town where she watches with amazement while her children grow up way too fast, gardens, and marvels at God’s mighty hand in everyday life.

'How much more, exactly, did God think he could take?'

This is a stunning series. I have loved each book as it released, and eagerly awaited the next in the series. I was not disappointed ever in any of them. These Murphy brothers are an amazing bunch, raised by godly parents and taught honesty, integrity, and a powerful godliness. Jennifer Rodewald excels here, in each one.

Connor Murphy gets a second story here. We first met him in a previous book when he felt led by God to marry a woman with cancer and a little boy. What started out as a marriage of convenience quickly turned into a deep and abiding love. When his beloved wife dies, Connor is devastated and can't seem to escape the pain, even two years later. But it seems God has another plan in mind for him. Jade Beck arrives to work at the same lodge Connor does with her two children in tow. Jade carries enough hurt in her heart for more than one person.

'God, is it ever going to get better?'

Connor is an admirable, Jesus-filled man who always thinks long and hard and prays about every move he makes. He is not ready for what looks like a new direction God has sent his way, but he is willing to be obedient. Both Connor and Jade have been in hard places and known deep, heart-rending pain. Neither can see that God can do anything that will take away the pain of their hearts. But we serve a God that can make all things new, can make a road way in the wilderness and streams in the desert.

Jennifer Rodewald has a unique ability to plumb the absolute depths of human emotion in her characters. So many times I have been moved to tears reading her stories. This one ministered to a situation that I was going through in my own life while I was reading the book. Isn't that just like God? I truly could feel these characters' pain.

Come along on this journey as we discover God always had something for His children even when they think the pain is all consuming and the light will never shine again. Bravo! Oh! There is one more in the series.

My thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book. I was not expected to leave a positive review and the opinion here is entirely my own.

If you have read the Murphy Brothers series, then you will know that Morning by Morning is Connor Murphy’s second book. He had previously found his happily ever after in Everything Behind Us, book three of the series and a gripping story that was based on the truth that the heroine of the story was battling cancer. So, to find out that years later, Connor was broken over the loss of his wife and that this would be that story, I wasn’t sure I could handle it. Yet, I also knew it was going to be a deeply moving and God honoring tale that, even through the difficult parts, would be uplifting.

The author captured Connor and Reid’s grief and the life they were living day by day perfectly. She also captured the feeling of failure and helplessness that Jade Beck was weighed down with after her divorce. Jade’s kids were also a great example of the way different people handle anger and hurt.

Another detail that was captured was Connor’s wonderful role of father to Reid. And even the way he stepped in and worked to be a good role model to Jade’s kids. He doubted himself often, yet was always diligent in trying to be there for those who needed him.

I loved the work that God did on both Connor’s and Jade’s hearts as they began to fall in love. However, it wasn’t just a simple fall, there were kids to consider and worries and uncertainty that both Connor and Jade carried regarding the future. Could they risk their hearts again?

I loved this story and wished there had been an epilogue to show us a peek at their future as a family together. I was thrilled to see that there will be one more book in the series titled A Murphy Gathering, so I don’t have to leave these characters quite yet!

It's been several books since we'd last been in Connor Murphy's POV, but given his wife's precarious health, this eighth book makes for a satisfying conclusion to his story.

There's little light or breezy about this story, but it showcases what Jennifer Rodewald does so well. She's not afraid to dig into her characters' wounds and allow all the ugly stuff to surface. The near-despair, the discouragement, the selfishness. She gives voice to all of those human emotions but tempers them all with the hope we have in Christ.

The interaction between and among the Murphy brothers has always been a favorite part of this series for me, so I loved having Matt and his family as part of this novel too. No one tells it to you as straight as your siblings.

Grieving Connor and his son Reid are well-suited to Jade and her children, Lily and Kellan. Jade's story is so well-balanced, letting us see the fall-out of both her own poor decisions and a selfish, borderline abusive ex-husband and her desire to preserve some kind of positive relationship between him and their children.

I'm glad what looks to be a big Murphy family round-up is on the horizon in the final book of this series so that this big clan or faithful sons and their growing families can have a proper send-off.

Wow.

So as a background, I'm really protective of the Murphy brothers, and I love their emotional, faith-centered stories, but I've had a hard time with how poorly the women treat them in their books. Specifically, I had a really hard time with Connor's first book and the way Sadie refused to believe the best of him. It just made it hard for me to enjoy the book.
I understand that they eventually overcame that, that Connor loved her dearly, and they ended up having several happy years together. But now that she's passed away and Connor gets another chance at love, I really came into it hoping for a more satisfying story for the one who has probably always been my favorite Murphy brother.
Thankfully, Jennifer delivered, and Connor got his HEA with Jade. I do love more mature romances, and I love Connor's steady strength and dependence on God through everything he's suffered.
But most of all, I love stories about finding peace in surrender to God, the depth of the character arcs, the vulnerability and honesty, and the solid truths in Rodewald's books.
Yeah, This Life will always be my favorite, but Morning by Morning is a solid addition to the series and IMO, one of the best

What an emotional read! This has been such a fantastic, faith-stirring series. I've really fallen in love with the Murphy family. I've enjoyed getting to know them, following alongside them, and rooting for them as they've faced some tough real-life struggles.

This is Connor's second book. I didn't know how I'd feel about that. His and Sadie's story was a favorite. An emotional ride, for sure, but oh so good. This one was an emotional read too, for different reasons. My heart broke for Connor and Reid. Their loss is just so unimaginable. I had already made up my mind that I wouldn't like Jade, but she had such an endearing quality to her that I couldn't help but like her. And her kids too. They were going through some things, too. Not the same as Connor and Reid, but it sure tested them.

Jennifer Rodewald has such a talent for bringing a true sense of authenticity to her stories. I always feel like I'm reading about real people, dealing with real issues. While this story had its hard moments, it was an incredibly rewarding read. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Awesome story!

It was a little harder on the heart to read because it not only featured the hurting adults, but also their hurting children. There were a lot of Bible references and verses quoted, but action is what won out over fear.

I don't think my life was ever really a "wreck," but I can't help but agree with the line “I never imagined God would take the wreck of my life and rewrite it into this thing of wonder and beauty.” I'm glad I understand from where good things come, and who to call out to when it feels like the bad things are overwhelming me.

Rodewald has a way with words that I cannot even begin to describe. Her stories always speak straight to my heart, bring me to tears, and provide hope in circumstances that you don't always see. She is not afraid to write about gritty situations, flawed characters, and redemption to people that others may see as unworthy. This is why she is one of my favorites, because she writes realistic storylines, characters and solutions.

Morning by Morning is such a fantastic story. First of all, I was pretty much in tears from the get go. There's something about a man who is grieving over his wife and trying to be a good father to his child. I mean, I totally feel for the guy of course, but also I'm like hello lol. I think it's the way Rodewald wrote Connor's character. He was just an ordinary guy trying to do his best in honoring his late wife. His reaction to when Jade came on the scene was perfectly written - he felt guilty and almost ashamed for even looking at her basically. Some authors may not have reflected the grief in their hero at this point, and I am so thankful Rodewald kept it real. You saw his struggle, and ultimately it provided for a sweet character arc.

Jade of course had her own issues to overcome. Being a divorced single mom is tough, especially when one of those children is so difficult at times. I kind of liked how her kids were polar opposites, because it showed how different children can deal with things like divorce and change. Bu what really made the story was watching Jade and Connor grow closer. Each taking delicate baby steps towards each other, not wanting to risk anything similar to their past happening. It was so sweet and so well written. It provides hope to readers who have been in similar situations. No matter the current trial, there is always something good coming down the road. You just have to get there, and allow yourself to look forward.

Contemporary romance fans who enjoy a strong faith thred will enjoy this novel. Highly recommend! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Morning By Morning by Jennifer Rodewald is a charming contemporary Christian novel. It is the eighth book in the Murphy Brothers series but can be read as a stand-alone.
The book deals with the themes of loss, adjustment and new beginnings. We see two broken families, grieving what has gone before – one family lost a mother to cancer, the other had a philandering husband. Children and spouses are hurting. They need to press into God and trust His faithfulness to see them through.
In the darkness of life, it is easy to think that God has abandoned us. “God is still with my family, isn’t He?” God walks with us in the dark. “Don’t lose eyes that look for God’s grace in the darkness.”. His grace is sufficient for my weakness. Great is His faithfulness.
God wants us to be truthful with Him. We do not need to pretend we are ok when we are not. He wants our honesty and our hearts. “I think God would rather hear my questions… than have me retreat into an angry silence.” We need to keep communication open.
Life throws us challenges and hard times. We cannot change that but “You can choose how to respond in life.” We can respond in bitterness or love. Jesus asks us to live a life of love.
There is the theme of forgiveness. We must forgive or risk living life in a prison of bitterness.
We witness the love of Jesus working through lives as they learn to trust Him and to press into Him.
Knowing our Bible is important. In the hard times we can reach for and hold on to the promises of God.
I love all the Murphy Brothers books. They always lodge in my heart.
I will leave you with my favourite, very powerful quote:
“[He] had acted ungodly. But that didn’t change who God was. God was faithful. He was kind and good.”
I received a free copy from the author. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.

Connor has been struggling in the two years since his beloved wife's death, and now it feels like his son Reid is pulling away from him. He prays desperately for some time without change - only to find that his boss has hired someone new to take his wife's old role at the lodge: a woman of about his age, with two kids respectively older and younger than Reid. Worse, he's attracted to her. Jade's marriage was pretty terrible, but she held it together as long as she could. When her husband left her for another woman and then asked her to move away, she found a job near her parents - only to meet a co-worker who evidently disapproves of her at first sight, but later turns out to have some qualities she had begun to doubt a man could ever have. Can two wounded people find healing together, or is there too much between them?

I enjoyed Connor's first story and was saddened by the mention of Sadie's cancer coming back in a subsequent book, but it was great to be able to watch him find love a second time - and to have another excuse to visit the Murphy family again! Both Connor and Jade have a lot to work through before they can really be together - and so do their kids. But I really enjoyed the (often emotional) journey. I particularly appreciated the way Connor developed, and the role siblings can play in helping each other. All in all, a touching, inspiring, thought-provoking, satisfying story. Highly recommended.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

In this book you will read about the loss of a loved one and a divorce that hardened a small boy.
Connor is trying to get on with his life with his son who is also struggling. Jade moves away from her ex husband and starts a new life for her and her kids. Jennifer Rodewald’s will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next with these wonderful inspirational people. You will feel God working throughout this wonderful story. I had the honor to review this book for the author for a honest review.

Another beautiful story

This was beautiful and sometimes hard. Watching Conner and Jade struggle, although necessary to the story, tugged at my heart. And isn't that what we want from a sweet love story with strong characters? I really enjoyed this Conner story maybe even more than his first one. Not every series can handle one hero with two separate love stories.

I never was expecting Conner to get another book. Shoot. But it was great and I really loved the children angle. I loved all of their adventures. I’m so sad this series is coming to an end but I can’t wait to see what Rodewald will come up with next!

Honestly speaking, it's worth reading!

I have a problem still in liking Jade's ex husband. Both he and Macey were callous and indifferent-- extremely oblivious to other people's feelings. He was controlling and manipulative; emotionally abusive. I can relate to that. It whittles one's self-esteem. I'm glad to know that there was healing.

I knew this would be an emotionally charged book. We read Conner and Sadie’s story earlier in the series and this continues Conner journey. I loved Conner and Sadie‘s story. It was beautiful. Poignant. Tender. That’s why I wasn’t sure the next step would do it justice, but it did.

If you are in search of an author who digs into the messiness of life, look no further. Jennifer Rodewald continuously delivers gut-wrenching emotions in each book she writes, and the Murphy Brothers series has held my heart through each book.

Morning by Morning is Connor Murphy’s second book. If you’re new to the series, you won’t be lost picking up this one, but you will understand so much more about the man Connor is if you read Everything Behind Us. Dubbed Constant Connor by his brothers, he is the dependable, do the right thing brother.

But Connor has suffered a devastating loss and, two years later, he’s still grieving. The last thing he wants is more change in his life. Enter Jade Beck and her daughter and son. Jade is also grieving a loss, but in a much different way than Connor is. Yet, the two are in the midst of exactly what Connor wants least—change.

I was happy to see Matt and Lauren (from book one in the series) again. And appreciated how Matt spoke truth into Connor’s life when he most needed it, helping Connor to see where his resistance to Jade was coming from. The bond the brothers have cultivated over the years through this series is one of the strengths of Rodewald’s writing.

Loved Conner and Jade's story. Conner was raising his son alone, both had been drowning in their sorrow. Jade was moving next door with her two kids. The subject matter of death, divorce and infidelity was a hard one, but this book dove into each situation and found the perfect voice for wading through to the other side. The characters in the book were your best friend, your uncle, your family. The scriptures helped lift them out of their despair and gave them peace and hope for tomorrow. I highly recommend 'Morning by Morning'. I received this book from the publisher. The thoughts and comments are my own.

Loved and enjoyed reading this book. Just like Jennifer's other Murphy Brothers books this one doesn't disappoint. It leaves you wanting to set everything aside and just read until you turn the last page of the book. The characters are real, well developed and relatable. This book touched my heart and met me where I was at in my life (struggling with pain, feelings of being unworthy, unloved, a failure and more). But the book doesn't leave you there but gives hope and encouragement to move forward even in the hurt and pain. I recommend this book and Jennifer Rodewald other books. Dive into the adventures and life of the Murphy brothers and family today.

This was a deeply emotional read, dealing with loss and death as well as finding the courage to continue living. It challenged me to be more, love deeper, and walk closer with Jesus. There were funny moments, especially Jade’s inner monologues and Lily’s perspective on many things. Ms. Rodewald always delivers worthwhile fiction that meets difficult subjects head on without leaving her reader bleeding with no hope. Rather, she excises the bad and fills you with so much hope and strength that you come away renewed. I highly recommend this book.

Truly inspirational

I've put off reading this book because, to be honest, I have stayed away from anything heavy for awhile now. But this story, like all of this author's stories, was rich, fulfilling and challenging in all the very best ways. I'm better for having read it. What a beautiful story of what love is, of what forgiveness looks like, of what following Jesus is. This is a book that will be well worth your time. Excellently written with substantial depth. Highly recommend.

I started near the end of the series...

... now I need to go back to the beginning to read the other brothers' stories.

There are some great verses in here that are woven into the story. Reminders of God's promises, His faithfulness to us, and His love. He doesn't always give us what we want, but He ways are so much greater than we could even hope for. He can heal the broken-hearted and give joy in new circumstances. Really touched my heart. Thank you, Jen.

God puts broken pieces together to make something new and beautiful

It's two years after his wife's death from cancer. He is just now feeling like he can breathe. He prays for no changes in his life but God has plans for him a future and a life without the sorrow. She comes from a broken, marriage with a cheating husband with a friend. She is broken and just wants peace. Highly recommended for all readers

Connor thought he couldn't possibly find love again after Sadie went home to Jesus. Jade had so much unforgiveness because of the jerk she was married to before. Add up the grief and other hard feelings of all the kids and you come up with a mess. Is this mess too big for God to fix? Read this and see. I was very glad for this next addition to the Murphy Brothers series. Very well done!

Rare 5 stars

Typically, I give books I enjoy 4 stars. Because this one made me think, learn, grow and even cry, it gets 5 stars. I am even inspired to write a song that wraps around the childhood Sunday school song, Jesus loves me this I know. We will see how far I get with that. No matter what your difficult circumstance is or or was, this book can help you.

Beautiful story

I loved this book. There was honesty and raw hurts that gradually healed with love, patience and God’s grace. The characters were so likeable and the story was heartwarming and enjoyable. I couldn’t stop reading it but I didn’t want it to end. I’ll need to read the next one!

Wonderful, hearttouching story with such loving characters. Two families who have weathered heartbreaking events and come out stronger than ever before. A stirring and sweet love story involving the children as well as the adults.
