How The Heart Breaks

Rate this book
He was her secret, her sin, the heart she couldn’t love.

Emery Robert’s life is everything she wanted. Married to the love of her life, with a good job, and plans for a family in the future. But when Emery’s husband dies tragically, she is the one who stops living.

Three years later, at the age of 30, she’s still struggling to move on. Friends are encouraging her to date again, while her in-laws want to keep her in the past, trapping Emery in the middle.

Deciding to move to a new town to start fresh with a new job and house, Emery’s 17-year-old niece, Addison, moves in with her for her final year of high school, where she instantly forms a crush on the popular and mysterious, Mason James.
At 19 years old, Mason has been through far more than most. A past full of tragedy and loss. Being held back a year in school, Mason is mentally years beyond his peers. Not feeling he belongs anywhere, until he meets Addison’s very sexy aunt.

Overwhelmingly drawn to her, he can’t seem to get this older woman out of his head. And no matter how much Emery denies it, he’s the first one who has sparked life in her, making her feel things she shouldn’t.

As much as she fights her forbidden desire, the sparks between them can’t be denied. When reality crashes down, it’s not just the taboo of their age difference that will rip out their hearts. It’s what fate has in store for them that will show them how the heart breaks.

Wow, How The Heart Breaks by Stacey Marie Brown completely blew me away. This book is a fucking masterpiece. It's addictive, has a huge heart, breaks your heart, heals your heart - it's fucking passionate and all consuming and it kept me on my toes the entire time. I read it one day, I just couldn't stop reading. And even though I just finished it 5 minutes ago, I am ready to read it again and again and again. It is THAT good!

The book starts with Emery. She is happily married to Ben and loves him very much. She grew up with little security and she loves the security he provides. He just graduated from law school and they are having a party to celebrate. He goes out for a quick run. And then disaster strikes. He dies suddenly and the next three years are a big blur for Emery. Until she decides to move away. Her sister's teenage daughter is very angry and Emery suggests that Addison will move with her. So they both have a fresh start. Her sister agrees and that is where the story kickstarts.

Emery is happy she has a fresh start where she isn't just the widow. And even Addison is thriving. She joins a cheerleading squad, makes amazing new friends and quickly has a huge crush on the assistant coach. She keeps on telling Emery about Mason James and how much she adores him. When Emery goes to Addison's first cheering game she finally meets Mason. And boy, I LOVED that scene! Mason and Emery are instantly drawn to each other. Emery's body finally starts breathing again and she cannot take her eyes off of him. She flees away after the gives and decides she just needs to get out more. He is just a 'kid'. And she is a 30 year old woman.

But Mason isn't easily deterred. He keeps finding moments to talk to her. He keeps finding moments standing close to her, breathing her in, touching her. And I love how fiercely she denies him at first. How she pretends nothing is there, while her body burns.

This isn't some weird provoking cougar story. This book is a beautiful love (and HOT) story between two adults. He might turn twenty at the start of the book. But he is wise beyond his years. And we slowly find out why during the course of this book.

I just love how I felt their looks burn me. How their touch touched me. How I ached and screamed for them. How I wanted to shake Emery at times! Not in a bad or annoying way! I just wanted her to see.

And when she sees oh my heart. These two have amazing chemistry. It's all consuming and I love the quiet and sneaky moments at the start. The almost I get caught moments. The burning moments where anyone could see what was going on.
And the pain and anxiety that comes with realizing what their future entails. I loved both epilogues. I read some nasty and bad reviews about the second epilogue. But I loved it. I teared up so badly and I ached, I ached and hurt. But I realized very quickly that I knew what my outcome of the story would be.  And I will stand by that and believe in that.

My heart beats for these two characters. Stacey Marie Brown, thank you so much for writing this all consuming book. You stole my heart with who they are, the words they speak and the essence they live by. This book deserves a million burning stars! I absolutely loved and devoured it. And I'll read it many, many times!

If you haven't picked this one up and you love romance novels which contain pure fire, then read this brilliant masterpiece!! It deserves to be read by millions and millions of people!

* - * - *

Oh yes, I read it again! I just can't get enough of this brilliant book. ♥

Brace for impact! The sexual tension feels pretty intense in this book. I don't want to say insta love/lust, but I'm struggling to find other words. It's very much a... see them from a distance, lock eyes and 💥*explosions*💥moment.

They definitely had a connection. They definitely had some sort of chemistry…But with that being said...do I think this is based on more than just an intense attraction to each other. It’s a No. It didn't seem like they had a very strong emotional connection.

I mean every interaction always stemmed back to sex, which I get, but I'm struggling to see what they actually like about each other. This was beside the grief/ loss they had both experienced, which they only spoke of briefly.

It's a lot of spice, a lot of smut, a lot of very sexually charged energy. If you are looking for that, then perfect, cause it's here.

This is a Reverse age gap, between a 20 year old and 30 year old. So nothing too taboo really, except for the fact he was in high school. However, he was out of school for a while, due to specific plot twist-related reasons. Regardless the MMC apparently has an old soul and he was older than his years.

I definitely preferred him over Emery, as she was a bit of a flip-flopper. He was very much all in and I felt like she would play with his feelings slightly, and then throw his age back in his face. I didn’t love that. I understand her reluctance though, as this relationship would affect all areas of her life and others' lives.

I was at 85% and then I skipped to the ending (prior to the 1st epilogue), as it seemed like the 100th time they got back together. This is where I found out the last plot twist, which I will spoil at the bottom, cause I have opinions on it.

Overall it was a good read. I just don't love some of the decisions or directions it went in. Personal preference though, loads of people loved this book.

🚨⚠️Spoiler Alert ⚠️ 🚨

———————————————

I found the end plot twist a little cliche and it put a damper on the ending for me. If you haven't watched the movie ‘Return to Me’ (which is one of my favourite movies) or ‘The Best of Me’ or ‘Last Christmas’ maybe this won’t seem like an overused storyline to you. However, the dead love interest heart in the new love interest, or a family member or... yourself and then you fall in love with his ghost (I acknowledge this example is a little more niche) seems overdone.

Not a cougar. Thank gawd. Had me worried there.
Loved them together.…Eventually. SPOILERS
Can a man love a woman more? Swoon…
First epilogue was welcomed but the second one not.
Romance to me should have a solid HEA.
Not up-in-the air like this one.

30 year old widow h meets almost 20 year old too-mature-for-his-age H.
Commanding and strong, beautiful, self assured and dominant.
Yet, oh, so vulnerable.
Instantaneous HEAVY sexual tension between Hxh💥
It never stops at any stage of the book.💥

He’s in hs because he’s been ill and his family didn’t want him to miss out on teenage stuff.
He loves them and wants to make them happy so he attends hs for them, even though he hates being there because he’s way more mature than his peers. And he’s a moody fucker…

Her teenage niece has a crush on him.
He’s not interested in anyone but the h.

She pushes, he pulls.
She changes her damn yo-yo mind so often; irritated me no end.

Her niece finds out, tears and drama ensue.

Then the truth: unbeknownst to either of them, he’s the recipient of her deceased husband’s heart.
He pushes, she pulls.
She pushes, he pulls.
Etc etc

The end up together and have a wonderful life and beautiful family.

But at age 44 he’s going into hospital for another heart transplant.
That’s where the book ends: just before he goes into theatre.
Sigh
Why

What I DO adore about how this book is written is that the Hxh actually talk/shout/hiss/scream/whisper in a way that other authors refuse to let their Hxhs communicate. I’ve been reading the most ridiculously long chapters of couples monologuing ad nauseam just so that the author can cover pages, I swear. One person will say something over 5 paragraphs and the other will reply with 2 sentences. And I’m the only one going what??? Why aren’t you addressing all the points she just made? Here’s you coming with your mere 2 lines to her 59. How do u move forward?
Slowly, is now 🙄

This couple actually SAY stuff to each other instead of blah blah bullshit paragraphs of nothingness. Of COURSE they go round and round with issues as would any new couple in the forbidden trope but at least they respond to the points each one makes.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Some excerpts I liked:
Them about ow’s crush on him:
“I’m sleeping with someone not only younger than me, but the guy my niece is obsessed with. ”…..“He strode up to me. “I don’t want to be with her. I never did, nor am I going to. Stop treating me like her crush is somehow my fault. I have no control over her. But I know how I feel. What. I. Want.”
Him to ow:
“You can’t hate her (the h) for taking something that was never yours to begin with.” I tried to keep it soft, but she still flinched at my bluntness.”
He’s not an idiot:
“But we both know this can’t go anywhere.”
“Why?”
“Why?” I sputtered. “Because…” I motioned to him. “You’re too young—”
“What a bullshit excuse. How many men date women ten years younger, and no one gives a shit?”
“It’s not that. It’s how those ten years separate us. I’ve been married, widowed… you are still in high school.”
“Actually, I dropped out. I’m getting my GED.”
“What?” My mouth opened. “Did you do that because of me?”
“Seriously?” He tilted his head, his lids narrowing. “Stop making me out like some lovesick puppy following you around. I make my own fucking decisions. ”
Gorgeousness:
“Besides his large muscular frame and sexy looks, at twenty he brimmed with confidence and dripped with sexuality. He was the kind of man who walked in, and every woman instinctively understood… he knew how to fuck.”
Jealousy:
“Have a good time on your date with Dr. Douchebag?” He perched me on the “back of the sofa, my hips widening as he settled between them.
“Daniel is a decent man.”
“Decent.” Mason scoffed, our breaths mingling as we spoke between our desperate kisses, his fingers already tugging at my outfit. “You don’t want decent.”
Wow 🥵🥵 Stacey did the thing. Her writing draws you in and keeps you in a 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥.
This is one of those books where you constantly come back to THOSE scenes because they’re just that good 🥵
Emory has it all. She’s stable, happy and married to the love of her life. Until he tragically passes away and leaves her broken and devastated. Unable to heal from her loss, She moves to a new town with her high-school niece in tow. Not expecting to have an undeniable connection to the guy her niece is crushing on. Her much younger niece.
This books is full of longing and steam. It’s absolutely perfect and I couldn’t put it down. I felt all the emotions and even started yelling out loud at one point. And did I mention it was hot? Because I’m just going to say it again for the people in the back 😍🥵❤️‍🔥
Not gonna lie here, it actually deserves one star because the amount of things I didn't like in this story was quite large, but it's so rare for me to basically binge read a romance in one day these days, so three stars for it.
I absolutely loved this heartfelt story, from new to me author. I had been a bit worried, how this story would pan out, considering the title and theme.
But I'm so glad I took a chance with this book, its such a touching and beautiful story of survival and making the most of what we have and appreciating those moments we have with loved ones. And how the world works in mysterious ways, in placing us on a certain path. Fate plays a big part in the MC's lives.
Very touching story.
Highly recommend.
Tropes:
- reverse age gap (30/20)
- forbidden/secret
Contains: death of a loved one, grief
Three years after the sudden loss of her husband, Emery finds herself inexplicably drawn to Mason--a much younger man, who also happens to be her niece's crush.
Unable to deny the connection between them, Emery and Mason fall into bed, but Emery knows her feelings for Mason are far more than just physical. She struggles to come to terms with her grief and guilt of moving on from her husband, and the guilt of 'taking' Mason away from her niece. The heart wants what it wants, and hers wants Mason despite everything that should keep them apart.
Holy crap, I was not expecting How the Heart Breaks to knock me in my damn feels! I figured the twist early on, but my god I was not prepared. I went in thinking this would be reverse age gap with some drama because of the Addison thing, but nope! Right smack in the feels... Lord!
Okay, I was real hesitant going in—reverse age gap? Niece’s crush? Sounded like a mess waiting to happen. But ohhh was I wrong. This book completely sucked me in.
The chemistry between the main couple? 🔥 Off. The. Charts. And the spice? Spicy and classy—like lingerie that actually fits. It was hot without being over the top, and their emotional connection made it even better.
There’s heart, and a whole lot of hurt. This story dives deep into trauma and grief in a way that feels real. If you’ve lived through that kind of pain, this one will hit you right in the chest.
And don’t even get me started on the third-act twist. I did not see that coming. It absolutely wrecked me—in a good way. I didn’t expect to love this one as much as I did, but here we are.
4.5⭐
Man, what a great story! Emotionally charged, tension, chemistry, heartbreak, healing. Such an amazing roller coaster, and a beautiful story. Emery is dealing with a loss she isn’t sure she can overcome, but in an effort to move on and forward with her life, she picks up everything and moves a few hours away to start fresh, bringing her niece, who also needs a fresh start, with for her senior year of high school. Never in a million years did Emery dream that attending a football game to support her niece’s cheerleading would lead to a connection that would be nearly impossible to deny, but nearly as impossible to succumb to. Mason is everything she feels like she needs, but something she absolutely cannot let herself take.
This story is a reverse age gap, forbidden, secret romance, with tons of steamy tension, as well as hot spice. It’s overcoming grief, learning to do things for yourself, let yourself love others, and moving forward. It’s messy and sexy, and full of angst and turmoil, as well as love and joy. A wonderful HEA, with an epilogue that had me in tears.
I got the lovely opportunity to receive an ARC of this amazing book. This is a voluntary review and I am very excited to share my thoughts.
.
Secrets. Heartbreak. Love. Loss. New. Old. This story was full of so many emotions. From chapter one, it throws you into loss. And as you come up for air that’s when you meet a young nineteen year old with a tight ass. Emery thought she could never feel certain things again until she saw Mason James. It’s forbidden. What would people say? But boy does he have a way with words. He got me questioning my life choices. This book will have you on a high. It’s hot. Coat closets. Washers. FaceTime. Car hoods. With all the feelings going around this book also got one amazing twist. You won’t even see it coming. Now let’s hear some of those lovely words…
“I enjoy fixing older, broken things.”
“I leaned back on the counter, trying not to stare at his firm, pert ass.”
“You talk like it’s going to happen again.” “Believe me.” He dipped into me, his mouth a hair from mine. “It will. Many, many times.”
“His eyes flashed as he pulled his arm away, placing his fingers in his mouth, sucking me off them. “For the road.” He winked before sauntering out of the garage.”
“So tell me? Did he take you to Jesus-land?” “Oh yeah.” I sighed. “Several times.”
.
Now go preorder this book ASAP. You won’t regret it.
TW: death of a loved one, grief,
Mentions of or conversations relating to: drug use, death due to drunk driving, among others I may have missed
I’m going to collect myself and wipe the snot/tears off my face, then hopefully provide this book the review it deserves (along with updated TW). But for now, just know that:
This was everything . Heart, taboo, reverse age gap (30/19-20), angst, spice???? Yes, yes, yes to all. I sobbed my way through the last 30% - it’s been a while since I’ve made sounds while crying and I just know the neighbour whose living room is on the other side of the wall my couch is against is questioning what the hell he was hearing through the walls.
I devoured this in a day. Every emotion happened. A beautiful, gut wrenching, and healing story.
Thank you to The Next Step PR and the author for this ARC; I am voluntarily leaving this review.
ARC REVIEW
This is a standalone, reverse age gap heartbreaking tale between two people who fate plays a hand in bringing together. The twists and turns within this story had me jaw-dropped and completely shocked at times. Pick this book up, seriously.
Stacey, Stacey, Stacey... I should have known when seeing the title of your book I'd be sobbing. What I didn't expect was so sob uncontrollably, full ugly crying at 10:30 PM on a Thursday before bed. This book had me WRECKED. It was so good, so emotionally captivating and so freaking HOT.
If you've read the Savage Lands series, you know that the spice is *chefs kiss*! Take that spice and multiply it. The spice was just next level and the chemistry between Emery and Mason was so fluid and well done. I truly got lost in their story and it felt like I was alongside them the whole way through. You really connect with Emery and Mason. Their stories individually and together are intense and so intriguing.
"I needed to do anything to stop the craving I had for the woman I could never have."
Every time I had to step away from reading, they were on my mind. I needed to know how their story would play out. In a true SMB fasion, the ending bamboozled me and was really where I sobbed.
"The most important thing is you live the happiest life you can. That is our first dream for you. For you to follow your heart no matter where it leads you."
This is one of my top reads of 2022 (Are we surprised here? It's Stacey. She's one of my auto-buy authors.) and I already know I'll be re-reading this story again because it was just so good.
"Why was the worst thing for you, the only thing you craved?"
How the Heart Breaks by Stacey Marie Brown
💫ARC Review💫
This is @staceymariebrown newest release, an emotional reverse age gap romance bringing all the feels, intense heat and a plot that left my mind racing. It was an absolute showstopper of a read!
Emery is struggling in her newest phase of life, after the heartbreak of losing her husband. Fleeing all the reminders of the town they lived and loved in together, she takes her niece Addy to start fresh some place new.
New town, new school and new cheer squad, sees Addy fit in with a new crowd including Mateo and dark mysterious bad boy/assistant football coach Mason. Mason, 19 and finishing high school a year late, becomes Addys biggest crush. Never in her wildest dreams could (Aunt) Emery imagine that it would be Mason who would kick start her heart again.
This was such a ride! The thread that weaves through the story is one based in pure love and loss. This was a such a mulitlayered read. On the surface it was about the push and pull between Emery and Mason, full of hot and tabooish secretive moments. But delving deeper it was the heart felt moments of Masons grandparents and the inner monolouge of both characters (through dual POV) that really made the character development shine. Everyone is trying to discover something new to live for and it was done sensationally!
Whilst hugely emotional the balance of funny moments, banter filled dialouge and sweet actions left me with a smile on my face. It has to be said that my jaw dropped on quite a few occasions, there were some wildly unexpected moments and tears definitely threatened to fall! I loved the whole journey!! 5🌟
If you are looking for a small town, loveable and angsty read this is absolutely for you!!
Edit: 5/14 second read, listening to the Audible! Two of my favorite authors and the story was even more amazing the second time through!
9/11: That ending…. Wow!
I seriously cannot with Stacey sometimes, she is a Legend! Her books make you feel all types of ways and let me say, this one takes the cake!
Emery and Mason are so fire it’s insane! With Emery losing her husband so young and moving to a new town she wasn’t looking for anything but a clean break from being Ben’s widow! Having a new job and making new friends she was finally making progress! But the second she saw Mason on that football field, they were both done for!
There is so much that goes on in this book, I don’t want to give anything away! Please check it out, you will not be disappointed!!
If you were wondering How The Heart Breaks, read this book and you’ll know 💔. Oh my f¥cking God this book was EVERYTHING! It was my first by Stacey Marie Brown but it’s my mission now to read every single word she writes!
Seriously I LOVED it, it was everything I want in a forbidden love romance, the heartache was so gripping, I felt like my own heart stopped a couple times!
The ending was so freaking beautiful, I couldn’t stop my tears but my heart felt so full at the same time 😭.
Also, this book was so hot, my e-reader was in danger of catching fire 😂.
Seriously though, it’s one of these stories that you’ll be thinking about long after you finished it.
I started this book and then got a bit distracted, not because the book was bad or boring- nothing like that. But life gets in the way at the worst times. I just hadn’t gone back to it. But then I started it from the beginning again and finished in one day. This book was beautiful!! It was heartbreaking. It was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 goddamn 🔥.
Mason and Emery were amazing characters. Their story made me bawl, made me cheer, made me salivate because their chemistry was off the fucking charts. I will be back for a more thorough review later….
Title: How the Heart Breaks
Author: S. Marie
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Type: Standalone
POV: First Person - Dual
Rating:
It had been three years since Emery Campbell’s world upended and turned her into an empty shell. That was until Mason James came into the equation and reignited what she thought was lost. But their relationship could bring more pain than either anticipated.
I started this book blind and was pleasantly surprised by the relationship dynamics. The forbidden nature of their relationship added an intriguing layer to the story.
I shoved at his chest, and for one second, I felt his heartbeat against my palm. The heart which was out to break me again.
Mason was incredibly intense and sexy, drawing me in from the start. Emery had a lot of apprehension, but I’m glad she took a chance. Though their constant push and pull occasionally felt drawn-out, the intense sexual tension kept me hooked throughout.
How the Heart Breaks is a story of appreciating every moment. It would appeal to readers who enjoy scorching forbidden romance.
“When you felt dead inside, the last thing you wanted to be around was cheerful people. It reflected what you didn’t have. Happiness.”
I went into this book thinking I was going to be absolutely gutted because you read the title, you read the synopsis and then you read the first 10 chapters and you kind of have an idea as to where this may be headed. I picked up on so many foreboding clues that I was on edge. Let me just say.. this book hit on many different levels and in all the best ways possible. If you’ve read Stacey’s works before and/or are a fan of contemporary romance.. you’re going to want to pick this one up.
One thing that I was a little hesitant about reading was the reverse age gap. I haven’t had too much luck with previous books where it could be a trope I could get on board with let alone read to feel the chemistry between the characters to be believable. I should have known better with Stacey’s style of writing because in no way was this cringe nor the dialogue cheesy, if anything it’s raising the bar. I went into this a little unsure but was totally rooting for the couple by the end. This book had me like a sidelines mom where I was laughing at the banter to yelling at the characters (“You IDIOT!” to include hand gestures) and wanting to throw the kindle across the room. Without a doubt you become invested in these characters.
I finished this book pretty much in one sitting (which is rare) and then it spent the next couple of days living rent free (as did.. other.. parts) in my head which is something because I normally don’t read ‘contemporary. ROMANCE’ ya’ll guys.
“..but at the end of the day, it’s up to us how much we let our own fears dictate the rest of our lives.”
Thank you to both Next Step PR and Stacey for this ARC to read and to leave an honest review.
4.5 Stars
A new-to-me-author and an exceptionally well-written angst-filled love story of heartbreak, loss, grief and a new beginning that held me captive. At times it felt like a wrecking ball smashing my heart into pieces. Its' beautifully written and filled with heart and soul.
At first, I didn’t know if this particular 10-year age gap – female is thirty and male is nineteen – was going to work for me. A bit uncomfortable but I hunkered down and soon found myself so deeply involved in Emery and Mason’s relationship that the age difference became insignificant.
Buried deeply in the manuscript is a simple clue warning of something big on the horizon – but it doesn’t come near preparing a reader for the whole shebang. At times it stretched my ability to fall for the totality of what I was reading. But at this point, I was so engrossed in this roller coaster ride and a goner for these characters and their lives and issues that I just went with the flow and cheered them on towards what I hoped to be a happy ever after.
By the end I was in tears. The overwhelming emotions left me gasping with surprise – and maybe a little desperate and begging for a bit more.
If I had to choose one thing that Stacey Marie Brown does well in her books is bringing the angst.
In this more dark contemporary romance, Stacey explores the heartwrenching despair of loss and finding yourself again after it. Emery loses her husband out of the blue destroying any carefully made plans that would lead her into the safe, secure life she always wanted. Fleeing from her heartbreak she uproots her life and moves to a town that knows nothing of who she was before with her teenage niece. Little does she know, the dark, brooding nineteen-year-old down the block will crash any new plans she has and awaken something new in her heart.
I have to say that age gap romance is. my. thing. and of course, Stacey brings it with her amazing storytelling. I was crying, laughing, and on the edge of my seat waiting for the other shoe to drop. She has such a way of knowing just how to rip emotion out of her readers and I am hooked.
"ℐ 𝒻𝑒𝓁𝓉 𝓁𝒾𝓀𝑒 ℐ 𝓌𝒶𝓈 𝒷𝓇𝑒𝒶𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔, 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝓃𝑜𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝓌𝑜𝓊𝓁𝒹 𝒷𝑒 𝓁𝑒𝒻𝓉 𝑜𝒻 𝓂𝑒."
I don't think I was quite ready for the ride this book took me on. I turned the last page of this book completely sobbing but in the best way possible. My reaction was so...guttural...that I didn't quite know what to do with myself. But isn't that the way we know a book hit us right in our soul?
"ℋ𝒾𝓈 𝑔𝒶𝓏𝑒 𝓌𝑒𝓃𝓉 𝒷𝒶𝒸𝓀 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝒻𝑜𝓇𝓉𝒽 𝒷𝑒𝓉𝓌𝑒𝑒𝓃 𝓂𝓎 𝑒𝓎𝑒𝓈, 𝒽𝒾𝓈 𝒹𝒶𝓇𝓀 𝑔𝒶𝓏𝑒 𝒽𝓊𝓃𝑔𝓇𝓎. 𝒱𝒾𝑜𝓁𝑒𝓃𝓉. 𝒫𝓇𝑜𝓂𝒾𝓈𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝓉𝑜 𝒸𝑜𝓂𝓅𝓁𝑒𝓉𝑒𝓁𝓎 𝓌𝓇𝑒𝒸𝓀 𝓂𝓎 𝓌𝑜𝓇𝓁𝒹. 𝒜𝓃𝒹 ℐ 𝓌𝒶𝓃𝓉𝑒𝒹 𝒽𝒾𝓂 𝓉𝑜."
But besides Stacey completely destroying me and putting me back together, let's talk about the spice. Stacey brought the spice! I swear I needed a fan on high next to me through most of this book. A cold shower or two. Mason was....wow. ::still sitting here fanning myself:: Two words: Coat. Closet.
"ℋ𝑒 𝓌𝓇𝒶𝓅𝓅𝑒𝒹 𝒽𝒾𝓈 𝒽𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝒶𝓇𝑜𝓊𝓃𝒹 𝓂𝓎 𝓃𝑒𝒸𝓀 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝓈𝓆𝓊𝑒𝑒𝓏𝑒𝒹 𝒽𝒶𝓇𝒹 𝒶𝓉 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝓈𝒶𝓂𝑒 𝓉𝒾𝓂𝑒 𝒽𝑒 𝓉𝒽𝓇𝓊𝓈𝓉 𝒾𝓃𝓉𝑜 𝓂𝑒."
Did I devour this the same day I got it? Yes, yes I did. The passion and the tension between Emery and Mason…I want that. It’s so much and these two broken people coming together? I love it so much.
Of course it’s complicated because he’s 19 and her niece has a massive crush on him but he only has eyes for Emery. It reads almost forbidden but there’s just something about them and the passion and tension between them that just refuses to let go.
There’s so much that happens in this book and I refuse to spoil it for anyone but that push and pull they do, and all the heartbreak is 100% worth it. Honestly if I could give it more than 5⭐️s I would 100%
And I totally bawled my eyes out reading this book, and I really do mean big fat ugly tears but it’s so emotional and beautiful, I need a copy on my shelf!
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟5* Against All Odds Stars🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
After reading the blurb and seeing the cover I knew I had to read this story because it promised heartbreak, grief and plenty of angst especially that this was a reverse age gap where Emery was 30 years old when she met 19 year old Mason. I did not hesitate to download it as I was in the mood to board this emotional rollercoaster.
The story of Emery and Mason did not disappoint. It was such a beautiful story of finding love a second time after losing the love of your life and about getting a second chance at life. It was also so steamy and forbidden! The chemistry between them so palpable I thought my kindle would catch on fire!
I loved every word written and was sad when it ended as I was fully invested in these two characters and their journey to their HEA. A redeeming factor was that I adored the Epilogue followed by Mason’s chapter. ❤
This is my first time reading a book by this author and I look forward to reading more of her wonderful storytelling.
Disappointed in this book.
This book has insta-lust and I hate that trope. The FMC struggles with her nipples and clenching her thighs left and right because of a hot 19/20 yo. My eyes rolled so many times.
Also, it’s stated so many times that the MMC is so much more mature than his peers physically and emotionally, but the story contradicts this. Literally in one chapter the MMC goes to a party, gets drunk, attempts to let a girl suck him off, then passes out at the FMC’s house. Then literally in the next chapter the FMC is having an internal monologue about how he is mentally beyond his years. What? The previous chapter painted him as a stereotypical high school student.
Overall, I just didn’t feel anything, so therefore the book wasn’t really a satisfying read.
My goodness!! This book was incredible! So many emotions! Unbelievable! Forbidden love, grief, and suffering, yet love was powerful enough that made for an amazing ending!!
I would first like to start off by saying that I was sent this ARC to review by The Next Step PR, but my opinions and thoughts are 100% my own. That being said, holy shitake mushrooms, I loved this book! While reading this my emotions had me riding a rollercoaster, and while I am absolutely terrified of heights, this is a ride I would happily wait in line for again. I had never read a reverse age gap romance prior to this so I wasn't sure what to expect but Stacey, per usual, blew me away with her beautiful way with words (and smut).
Summary:
Three years after the death of her husband, Emery wants a fresh start in a new town, and with that she and her troubled niece pack up and move to a bordering state 4 hours away from the place they had previously called home. Soon after their move, 30 year old Emery meets 19 year old Mason, and they are immediately drawn to one another. Their individual rocky pasts and trauma bring them together in a bond that they struggle to deny. Unfortunately, Emery is not the only one who
seems to have feelings for Mason, and her niece, Addison, who she shares her home with just so happens to be borderline obsessed with the mysterious brooding bad boy that is Mason James. As both Mason and Emery attempt to deal with the sparks that
radiate between them, they find that her niece's feelings for Mason and his young age are not the only standing in the way of what could be love.
Some of my favorite quotes:
"Grieving came in stages. It jumped and skipped and dropped you back to zero in a moment. Coming out of nowhere, breaking through the walls without warning when you thought you were getting solid."
"’Tell me that you don't feel this and you don't think about me. Tell me you haven't gotten yourself off to thoughts of me. That you haven't imagined how I'd feel sinking deep inside you?'“
“'I know the difference between your fake smiles and real ones. I've seen your face when you're coming around my cock. I know when you're pretending, hiding your pain so no one else will notice. I see you, Emery. I fucking feel you. Even when I'm not near vou.’”
I looked up books on tik tok to get me out of a reading slump and I kinda ate this book UP. Some people hate an age gap but my lil brain just doesn’t mind it. Also I will admit some people will say they could’ve guessed the twist at the end but NOT ME, my jaw dropped. My critical thinking is just not a thing during a lil romancey story
4.5 ⭐️ Wow. The last age gap romance I read had me rolling my eyes with disbelief. This one hit though. Mason’s history aged him. Made his behavior believable. Then you find out what that history actually was and man… I should’ve seen it coming, but I didn’t. The chemistry between him and Emery was palpable. I felt the angst, the desire, the pain, all as if it was my own. I can’t pinpoint what exactly makes this book not a five star read for me, but it’s so close. Loved it.
