Heart has to find a safe haven for her beloved unicorns. With Lord Dunraven looking for them -- and Heart's friends aware that helping her will bring Dunraven's anger -- she has nowhere to turn. If only she knew where her family was -- or who they were. In a mysterious bundle of paper in Dunraven's castle Heart finds a drawing that looks like the design on her baby blanket. The paper is covered with tiny symbols. If she can find out what they mean will they unlock the secrets of the dreams that have been haunting her?
Kathleen Duey grew up in Colorado. She loved riding her horses, hiking, being in the mountains. Reading was always important to her. Writing became a fascination early in her life. In the fourth grade, Kathleen began writing stories and told everyone who would listen that she was going to be an author. Then she did nothing about it until she was 35 years old. Writing was her passion and her dream-come-true.

Kathleen died of cardiac arrest at her home in Fallbrook, California. She was 69. She had struggled with dementia in her latter years which prevented her from completing her Skin Hunger trilogy.
Slow paced but with some Heart. Literally, Heart is the main character and her namesake is well placed for the story. Tis one gives some background and a little bit more of a sense of direction then the last few.
Overall, a small series of adventures that leads the main character forward with a purpose. More than that, it gives the direction and history needed for the story to continue. This one is the best of the series so far.
Heart's journey to protect her unicorns and find traces of her family continues apace with more danger averted thanks to a chance reunion with her traveling Gypsy friends.
Poor Heart Avamir. She is constantly on the run with no real home. Traveling with the two unicorns and her dog, she has to keep and eye out for Lord Dunraven's men. But with every adventure, she unravels more about her past. She wonders what the two rearing unicorns on her baby blanket means. Now that she has a book with the same rearing unicorns on the cover, she wants to know what it says inside. If only she could read! At least she is able to find that same band of gypsies and be there for a bit. It is the only place she has ever really felt welcome.
Kathleen Duey continues the wonderful adventure of Heart in The Mountains of the Moon. This fourth book in the Unicorn's Secret Series is more about discovery than adventure. The book reveals more secrets about herself that Heart must somehow figure out how to solve. The black and white artwork by Omar Rayyan is beautiful, as it is in all the books.
Young readers both male and female should really enjoy this book. It is the perfect book for them to practice reading aloud to their parents. Overall, The Mountains of the Moon, is an excellent early chapter novel and I cannot wait to find out what happens next in The Sunset Gates. I sure hope that Heart learns how to read.
My Review: I am now halfway through this series and not a whole lot has happened, it is a bit anti-climatic and some young readers may have grown bored by now, unless they are avid unicorn fans. I did like how we finally got a little background information to start formulating ideas and we also got some previous characters back. I do hope that we start to see a little more development in the next couple of books.
In the dramatic conclusion to this fantasy quartet, Heart must get her beloved unicorns to the safety of the Mountains of the Moon, but the Mountains are guarded by Lord Dunraven's men. It takes a miracle--but an even bigger miracle awaits her there.
The series were some of the very first fantasy I read. And I still like them, even though they are for a much younger audience, the story line is good and exciting.
