A Portrait of God: Stephen Charnock's Discourses upon the Existence and Attributes of God

Rate this book
Stephen Charnock (1628-1680) wrote what is considered to be the fullest treatment of the attributes of God, even though he did not live to complete the treatise. It is truly a biblical portrait of God drawn with a Puritan pen, rightly deserving its place among the best of Puritan productions and of English literature altogether. However, today's reader may find the 1146 pages a bit daunting. This summary presents the treatise in a more manageable form that maintains the theological depth and practical application of the original. Don't miss out on the riches of Charnock!
"I think if Charnock were abridged by a skillful hand, it would be a valuable work." -- David Kinghorn, in a letter to his son Joseph

This book is a shortening and distilling of Charnock’s masterful work on the attributes of God. One of the endorsements for this book said to purchase Charnock and put it on your shelf, it’s a beautiful set, but have this book down on your desk and return to it regularly. At first I was a little put off by that sentiment, but having read the book I understand. The author totally makes Charnock approachable and I will be using this book over and over again. I twice ran out of the little sticky flags I put in books because there were gems on every single page of this book. The author has also done one of Edwards’s books, I may have to go get that one too. Highest recommendation
