Andy Rash’s, Are You A Horse? is a humorous picture book that is recommended for a read aloud. The main character is a boy named Roy who receives a saddle for his birthday and being as he is a cowboy we can assume that he knows what to do with it, but instead the funny story has us discovering that Roy doesn’t know what a saddle is, what to do with it and where to find a horse. He then goes on a journey to look for a horse. The story is a lively adventure full of guesses that will have the stud

This is a laugh-out-loud-funny book with wonderful illustrations and text that builds on itself. There is also a very funny twist at the end. One of Roy's birthday gifts is a saddle which comes with two instructions: 1) Find a horse and 2) enjoy the ride. Roy sets out to find a horse. He questions everyone/thing he encounters and each time learns a new fact about a horse (this could be used as a humorous introduction to the scientific method...). For instance, he comes upon a snake asking are yo

Roy is a cowboy (adult!) without a horse, who receives a saddle for his birthday. He doesn't even know what a horse is!!
He goes off on a quest to find a horse and encounters a wagon, a cactus, a snake, a crab, a chameleon, an owl, a pig, a sloth, a man-eating lion and a zebra - asking each creature "Are you a horse?" Each responds with a difference between itself and a horse or a reason it couldn't be a horse which gives Roy clues to help him find a horse.

Part of me likes this book, part of me doesn’t. Roy gets a saddle for his birthday, but has no idea what a horse looks like. So he asks a wagon, and a cactus, and an owl. He asks animal after animal until he discovers a horse. The story is cute and the ending tongue in cheek. However, part of me doesn’t like this story because it could be seen as someone who can not learn, or maybe remember. It was an okay story, but I will not be adding it to my collection.

Storytime Theme: Horses
This was a great one that really built on what you read (view spoiler) . It was fun to ask the kids "is that a horse?" for each animal and after a couple they would start saying "that's not a horse, that's a _____" which was fun to test their animal knowledge and keep them engaged in the story. ...more

A cowboy gets a saddle for his birthday but he doesn't know what it's for. His friends tell him he has to find a horse and then they can use the saddle to go for a ride. The only problem is: the cowboy doesn't know what a horse is! So, the cowboy goes around asking all sorts of things if they are a horse. When he eventually finds one, they go for a ride with the saddle on the cowboy instead of the horse!

I liked this book because Roy the cowboy explores many different animals to find a Horse. As he meets different animals, (mostly safari) he learns what each kind of animal is and something unique about the animal.
The ending page has a cute unexpected ending, It made me give a little chuckle :)
I would use this book for a unit:
-Adjectives
-Learning about different animals

3.5 stars -- LOL! This colorful, silly book is a lot of fun--and will no doubt elicit plenty of giggles if read out loud to a classroom or library group. But it's the final page that really makes this one great and memorable.

This poor cowboy isn't sure what a horse is... he keeps narrowing it down by asking questions. It's fun to predict what he's going to guess next! A good one for introducing the concept of classifying.

I liked it. Kinders laughed when I hammed it up as a read aloud. We finished up with a round of Google's Mystery Animal: A Voice Experiment. Book prepped them nicely to formulate yes/no questions to ask Google.

Hilarious! A great read aloud for an animal ST. In eht vein of Are You My Mother?

A poor, little cowboy goes in search of a horse so that he can use his new saddle. Well, he finds one...he just doesn't use the saddle the proper way. Ha!
