Thank you so much for reading my debut book, and I really hope you enjoy it. Every rating and review you volunteer is the most important thing that a new indie author like me can have, so thank you for every word and star. I can't wait for your opinions, and I SO hope you enjoy Wen's and Godric's epic passion and journey towards a (hopefully?) HEA, in this tumultuous Afterworld with literally Hell and Heaven on Earth!

Thank you again for reading!

The mention of Zodiac Academy is what immediately grabbed my attention and made me want to read this book!

Survival has a name. And that name is Wen. She is sassy, brave, and loyal! Most importantly, she doesn’t take any crap, angel or demon. 👊 Much like Tory (my favorite Vega in ZA). I'm totally fan-girling!

The slow burn romance between Angelhole aka Godric and Wen is…slowwww. That buildup! It’s like a pressure cooker on low just simmering beneath the surface.

Y’all I giggled out loud. Afterworld is now embedded in my heart and I am invested in these characters. That ending! We need to find out what Wen is, what Sarah is, what Godric is hiding, are the Archangels going to be villains, will Wen fully remember what happened in the trials, do the Archangels know the reason students die, and what about her Unitas and their bonds?!? So many more questions and theories, but my lips are sealed…for now. I have never felt Wen more than I do now with all of my burning questions! Also, a little more history on Godric, the Archangels, and this treaty would be a treat. It makes me think of the Shadow Princess in ZA, and how I want more history.

Olivia Pharos has created an incredible world filled with mystery and adventure. This debut book marks the beginning of an EPIC journey and series! I need all the books yesterday. #PharosPhanatics

Come back to me-always.

I received an ARC for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Y'ALL. THIS BOOK IS LITERALLY IT.

Celestial Academy: Essence is the debut novel in Olivia Pharos new series Afterworld. And good lord this book is so action packed I feel like I can't even sit down and fully compress the amount of amazing things that happened within this book to lead us to such an amazing and ground breaking Epilogue... Think of this book as like ZA mixed with a slight blend of mystery and a whole lot more of greek mythology and that is this book. Honestly from the beginning I was entranced with each and every single character that we met. The more you thought you knew about any of them the more that you were proved wrong.. This book is just the right amount of everything to get you grabbing for the next in the series and hoping to god that your predictions are correct!

Alright lets break down our MCs:

Wen White:
A drug dealer, demon owned human.. the lowest of the low. From the ripe age of four she was set upon a path that only she could prove her destiny. Being demon owned a majority of her life left her finding ways to make ends meet but when a drug deal of her new substance goes wrong and she ends up in Celestial Academy, will Wen be able to put her grievances aside and work to trust or will she damn herself and everyone close to her?
Wen is a strong female lead that is a take no shit type of girl, even though she can't always defend herself she knows how to run her mouth which ends up getting her into a lot more trouble than any of us expect. I can't wait to see where her story goes to and how everything connects!

Sarah:
A lowly demon owned human, she has been friends with Wen since the beginning of time, when Wen is sentenced to her time in Celestial Academy, Sarah's left between a rock and a hard place. Will she make the right decision or will Wen be the one to save her yet again?
I think Sarah's character is absolutely great! She is more of the side kick type of friend until she isn't. Her growth with the book is freaking amazing and I know that she has so much potential!

Godric:
The entire time all I could think about was this:

I absolutely loved his character and I can't wait to see where it goes and how he progresses!

Tropes:
-Forced Proximity
-Enemies to Lovers
-Greek Mythology
-Paranormal Romance
-Antiheros

This book was everything I wanted Zodiac Academy to be, and so much more!

For the record, I never finished the first book of ZA. The bullying was too intense and unbelievable that any sane person would fall in love with man that horrific.

This book gets the enemies to lovers trope down perfectly, being both believable and arousingly infuriating at the same time. The interactions between Wen and Godric always felt genuine but never had the true feel of hatred, which I absolutely adore.

Wen was a perfect FMC for me. She didn't start out as a powerhouse, but she came into her power with proper instruction and encouragement from those around her. Nothing feels more satisfying that a character with real flaws who finds a way to overcome them. And I love absolutely everything about her automatic snark system!

I tried so very hard to hate Jinny and the rest but Olivia makes it nearly impossible to do. They all end up with redeeming qualities that made them endearing despite their animosity.

I'm incredibly excited to see where this story goes in the future, and where it will take the characters along the way.

Zodiac Academy hangover? Don´t worry, Olivia Pharos is here to save you!

For the category books that need all the hype, we have Celestial Academy: Essence, the first book in this new, adventurous, epic, sexy, urban fantasy.

First of all thank you NetGalle and IBPA for the ALC, if it weren´t for you I would have never discovered what might be my newest obsession.

I loved how Olivia was able to put into this book so many of the vibes I love without copying any other fantasy.
Yes, we have Godric aka Godawful, the broody-powerful-possessive MMC; Wen, the sassy -apparently powerless but actually not- FMC, a deadly school, and many other tropes we all love and cherish.
But the plot, how the story evolves, and the slow burn, are so original and refreshing they immediately trapped me in.

I love all the female characters and I can´t wait for them to form the ultimate girlbosses squad and just kill everyone in their path.

If you love:
- Morally grey characters
- Slow burn
- Hidden powers
- Academy
- Angels and Demons
- Friendship
- Amazing banter
Then what are you waiting for???? RUN!

The ALC was splendidly narrated and I had a super fun time listening to it!

Also if you are lacking in fanarts for this book, here it´s my Godric

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book!

Overall, I LOVED this book! I was hooked from the first chapter, and I was slightly annoyed with myself that I finished it so quickly! This is a binge-worthy read, and I am definitely going to revisit this in the future.

It is the perfect fantasy read that is set in an Afterworld that is Heaven and Hell on Earth. This contemporary fantasy contains unforgettable characters, enemies-to-lovers trope, mystery that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat, and suspense as an apocalypse stakes.

I simply cannot wait to reread this in the future!

"The world we humans knew did end, if not in the way we thought it would. It’s now a whole new world— Afterworld—because of one tiny difference. We now have Hell— and Heaven— on earth."

Ummm, this was fantastic! Easily one of my favorite Fantasy stories I've read this year!

Olivia Pharos created a highly entertaining (After)world! Every chapter continued to develop and expand this post-apocalyptic society in a way that felt new and exciting. The mystery behind Wen's origin, and basically everything Godric related, kept me glued to my Kindle! The tension between them, and their absolute SLOW BURN chemistry ...chef's kiss🤌! And that epilogue ..... I NEED TO KNOW what happens next! Gonna need book two ASAP, k thanks.

I was gripped early, wasn't sure what to expect but I was engrossed and read it solid every chance I got for 3 days. Then I was annoyed that I'd finished it too quick!
It's so detailed, but not useless detail, it's rich detail that gives the tale texture and makes you want to know more as you get to know and care about the characters.
Upon finishing I immediately wanted to grab the next book in the series and carry on. I'm sitting on the edge of my seat needing more.
Absolutely mesmerising storytelling.

The book, Celestial Academy: Essence by Olivia Pharos is a different take on the end of time and is a very enjoyable read. The book is big but doesn’t seem one page more than needed to tell the story. I am already waiting for the next installment of the series. It is always gratifying when a new author does good in a big way and this “new” author is one I’ll be looking forward to reading more from.

This is an epic blend of dystopian, paranormal, and all the good things wrapped up in one great story that hits the ground running. The world building and characters are wonderful. I could not put it down.

This wasn't for me. I picked it up for the (let me call it heavily inspired) cover and description comparing it to Zodiac Academy and Crescent City and it started out strong enough that it made me think such comparisons did the book a disservice. I especially liked Godric's introduction. The farther in I got tho, and the more SJMisms surfaced (angelhole was especially rough) along with the expansion of the world, the more disappointed I got. The final straw was Wen herself because as it turns out there is such a thing as too much banter? Snark? Really cringy comebacks? I don't know what to call it but it exhausted me. I can see it being a fun read after a lot more editing but as it is, it's not for me.

2.5/5 stars, that needed some more time in the editing process I think

Thank you to Seventh Wonder Press for the arc through netgalley in exchange for an honest review!

Initially, I picked this book up as it said that it was fans of Zodiac Academy and I've been seeing the hype everywhere, but I didn't want to buy it and be disappointed (as it really isn't my usual genre). So when I saw this book on netgalley I figured this was the perfect opportunity to test it out and see if that is something I may want to pick up at some point in the future. Unfortunately, I think there were some good aspects of this book it didn't convince me to pick up things from this genre again.

Even from the beginning, the writing style was something I didn't mesh with, and I can point out a few reasons this was the case. First of all, I adore info dumps in fantasy books usually, give me every bit of information about the world so I can absorb some fantastic worldbuilding. But this one, the entire history of the story was explained in like ten pages by the main character, and in a very bland way. I just wasn't a fan of this, as I love getting explanations, but through the rest of the world and not necessarily the main character just telling me everything that happened in the world.

The main character herself was also something that I disliked, especially how she was written and her dialogue. Even from the beginning, I could tell that she would be snarky, which can be fun especially when sarcasm bleeds into the story. But this was just, too much for me. I was constantly rolling my eyes at things she said, especially as even in serious situations she would mouth off. It got really old very fast, and I was constantly surprised that she didn't just...get killed. Especially as she was living in a world full of angels and demons who could kill her with a second glance.

If I tried to tune this writing style choice out for the main character, I think the overall concept of this book was interesting. I enjoy seeing demons vs angels, and the question if angels really are morally good creatures in this scenario. But even then, the book was kinda slow in the beginning and didn't excite me beyond belief. Urban fantasy just isn't always my preferred genre either though, so that may be my preference in taste.

Again, there were issues with other characters in the book and especially the romance. Most of the other characters beyond the main character Wen and Godric (the "angelhole" love interest) fell flat, and most of them just felt like plot devices to move the story along. And don't get me started on Godric? He seems like an interesting character with layers but he was literally causing physical harm, abusing his power, and forcing the main character to walk on a leash (& subsequently restricting her airway/dragging her when she didn't walk fast enough). I just, that's not the romance I'm in for and isn't even making me interested in the enemies to lovers. It was kind of ridiculous, and I feel that this could have been cut back to make the romance more viable but I couldn't see it.

[TW: mention of war and murder, slavery, human/child trafficking mentioned, physical abuse, whipping, drug dealing and use mentioned, arrests, and sexual abuse mentioned]

A gripping and highly entertaining page-turner. Excellently written.

I cannot say what it was that drew me to the book, but as soon as I read the book description, I was intrigued enough to pursue an ARC copy rather than wait for its release next month. By the end of page 1, I was hooked. It is rare for me to come across the book which grips me at the expense of my everyday life, where I would sooner forgo a meal, fake flu-like symptoms so that I can stay in bed and isolation for a few days, and ignore the ringing of my phone, rather than put the story down.

Olivia Pharos has a brilliant gift for storytelling and this is a fantastic debut. The character's voice draws you in and grips you. I loved the wit and humour throughout. There is plenty of it, both subtle and laugh out loud. It is Wen's one defense against the fears, the suffering and pain she endures. She has a unique voice that lingers with you long after you stop reading the book. The world itself is expertly woven. The characters were perfect, each with their own voice, and each one intriguing and interesting, and I wanted to know more about them all. The characters have a staying power long after you finish reading the book.

At the end, the book left me bereft and desperately needing book 2. I am very much looking forward to the next installment of the story.

I honestly cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you love fantasy or romance, or both in one story, this is definitely a book I would highly recommend. On my bookshelf, Celestial Academy:Essence sits comfortably and proudly beside those written by authors such as C.L.Wilson.

2.5 ⭐

Seeing this book compared to Crescent City and Zodiac Academy, I was immediately intrigued. Unfortunately, it was not nearly as emotional as the former nor as entertaining as the latter.

I felt like very little happened in an otherwise long book - half the time we were stuck inside the main character's head and were forced to listen to her inner monologue for multiple pages, even in scenes that were supposed to be fast-paced and high stakes. At least 150 pages could've been edited out, the story would've stayed the same, and it probably would've kept my attention more. The pacing was weird, the first 40% of the story was incredibly slow and spanned over only a day basically, then when it finally got more interesting, and we arrived to the academy, we jumped weeks into the future and missed out on all the magical school aspect that I was looking forward to.

Characters besides our heroine and her love interest felt very one-dimensional, especially the best friend, who our main character spent half the book worrying about even though her only personality trait was being nice to everyone.

I think I would've enjoyed this a lot more had it been dual POV; Godric's one chapter in the end was more interesting than a lot of Wen's chapters combined. As it turns out, there's such a thing as a too snarky main character. Being witty should not come at the expense of me wondering how the hell this girl is still alive when she's determined to be bratty to everyone and constantly speak her every thought without even being aware of it.

I'm sad that my first read of 2023 ended up being a disappointment, but I hope the only way from here is up lol

Wow! This book was fantastic, I’ve not had a book captured my attention from the first few words in a very long time. This book did just that! I’ve had 2 very sleepless night because of it and this book is thick!!

The world building is fantastic and the plot flows so well. The characters are likeable and relatable. The banter is so witty I had many laugh out loud moments. I love the main female character- she is feisty and sassy. Love the tension between her and male protagonist. It’s super slow burn but the storytelling is phenomenal.

I can’t wait for the second book. If you enjoy fantasy romance with enemies to lovers, forced proximity and lots of tension you’ll love this book.

I came for the cover....that GORGEOUS cover....and of course, the description. I'm a sucker for mash ups of fantasy genres. But I stayed...and I mean stayed UP ALL NIGHT AND THE NEXT DAY...for the writing. I tore through the story like a starving woman at a feast. Then when I reached the end, I attacked my kindle, looking for the next book...only to remember this was an ARC...and there's no more of this incredible and ADDICTIVE story to read. Not for months maybe! My heart actually sank at the realization that I was almost sorry I read that book when there's no more of the story, of this world and those characters out there to get my hands on.

What am I going to do now? How can I wait for book two to five? The sane thing to do is to NOT read anymore before this series is complete. But I know I'll pounce on book two the moment it's available, then go through the same withdrawal. This book is THAT good, Olivia Pharos's writing, characters, world building and plot are THAT mesmerizing.

OK...I've ranted long enough. I'm now going to do the only thing I can do...re-read this book over and over...until the next book is out.

Do yourselves a favor, and wait until the book is out and you know when the next is coming, or go through my same frustration. Or...if you're like me, and you're in need of a totally fresh voice and world and a unique set of characters...grab this now...NOW!

A unique mix of urban fantasy, dystopian, paranormal romance and supernatural academy! I felt I was watching a blockbuster movie not reading a book! The characters are complex, the relationship arcs unexpected—then comes the romance.
Prepare for your new book husband, everyone! Godric is mine now. And the enemies to lovers romance is like nothing I've ever seen. You'll know what I mean when you read the book. 🙂
The slow burn is nerve-wracking!
The best part? This book got even better the second time around. I know it will keep getting better with every re-read. Good thing, too, since I’m already dying for the next installment!

This review was originally posted on Books of My Heart

Review copy was received from . This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I don’t know what is going on…recently it seems like I’ve found a few more books that have angel/demon dynamics in them.  I won’t say that Celestial Academy: Essence the first book in the Afterworld series has large religious intonations, because it definitely does not.  It is more like various teams playing on the court.   You have team Angels, they appear to be the upper crust of society now and make many of the rules in the human world.  Then there is team demons who tend to run some of the shadier happenings in this world.  There are also some fey, vampires, shifters, goblins and other supernaturals hanging out too.  Then there is the bottom of the food chain so to speak, the humans.  Most are sold into slavery to Angels, demons or others.  They have been since the world was lost in the magical war twenty-ish years ago.  This is the story of one of those Humans, Wen.

Wen, well what can I say I loved her from the beginning.  She has sass, an unusual talent, a really high threshold to pain, a mouth that runs away with her when it should just shut up and a propensity to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Owned by a demon she is doing everything to get out of his clutches along with her best friend and roommate Sarah.  Wen will do whatever it takes, even if that means selling Angel Essence (something only she seems able to collect) to earn the money needed to buy their freedom.  After she is busted by Godrick one of the Nephilim, whom she dubs Angelhole (see sassy),  she is swept away to the Celestial school to be trained by none other than the sexy half angel she just can’t help antagonizing.  As Godrick tries to whip her into shape, Wen just tries to stay alive in this magical school that seems to want her dead.

There are fights and challenges to move to the next level.  Wen, will have a shot to learn what she is capable of and possibly a little bit into the question of who/what she really is.  With her bff Sarah also at the school, at least she has one ally.

I hear this is like Zodiac Academy (ZA), but I haven’t read that series yet and so cannot comment on the similarities.  Still that said now I want to jump into ZA as well.  I always enjoy the magical school set up.  Wen is roommate with four other women of various background and the five of them make up one team.  They are supposed to learn how to work together to pass the tests coming at them.  A little had to do with a demoness, a fey, a paltry human, a Nephilim and whatever Wen is.   It was also nice that all the characters are around twenty so them lusting a little here and there felt slightly more mature and less icky.  The romance aspect of the story is a really slow burn.  The forced proximity wore Godrick down as Wen is likeable overall and her needling of him turned from aggravating to flirtatious.  It is a fun relationship to watch.

Come back to me - always

I’m really excited to see what is in story for the characters of this story in the next book.  The ending wasn’t a cliff hanger, but the author definitively gave us a tease and dropped a little bomb to get the reader really excited to see where the next story is going to go.

"The world humans knew did end, if not in the way we thought it would.  It’s now a whole new world – Afterworld – because of one tiny difference.  We now have Hell – and Heaven – on Earth.”

Narration:
I have listened to a few other books that Amanda Leigh Cobb has narrated.  I think she is a good pick for this series as it is through Wen's PoV and Amanda delivers Wen's humor and snark really well.   She brings out both the tough and the vulnerable sides of the main character while not diminishing the performances of the other characters.  I enjoyed her performance of the novel and believe it added to my overall enjoyment of the book.  I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.

Thank you to NetGalley and Independent Book Publishers for this audiobook.

Wen is our star in this, she's a demon owned girl in an post-apocalyptic world. Demons and angels kind of run the show now. Indentured with her best friend Sarah, she is stuck stealing angel-essence and creating a drug for demons. Stay with me...
She lands herself in trouble for selling this stuff and is shipped off to the Celestial Academy as a punishment of sorts. Her mentors are two arch-angels and she has a smidge of a love/hate with Godrick, who straps an invisible leash around her neck, tosses her around when sick of her lip and toys with her emotions...so obviously she swoons for him.

We meet other "cadets" or "trainees" and they are a fun diverse group with lots of sass.

The storyline centers around the trials Wen will endure to get through the academy and we have some mystery, like IS Wen human? Why can she do the things she does?

My only complaint is this thing is long, and often got confusing. I sometimes had to rewind and try to keep track of what happened to whom.
I think if read in book form I would follow it better.

It ends with a cliffhanger and I get the feeling it will be just the beginning of some cool world building.

All fantasy readers know that feeling when you read about a world so incredible that it seems to alter you in some way. When I finally finsihed Celestial Academy: Essence at 3 last night ( no doubt after binging it for 2 days straight) I realised this one did that to me. I picked it up because I like reading about angels and demons and the academy trope is one of my favourites but the story and plot is so unbelievingly brilliant it sucked me right in.

I adore Wen to the point of obsession, she's my baby. I love how vicious she is and can never hold her tongue even with the threat of death or 'fates worse than death' hanging over her. But what branded her character into my heart is that she came from nothing, no powers, no privilege and survived purely on grit, determination and will. And then she got conscripted into the Academy and she became something more. The cherry on top is that this wasn't any divine awakening that gave her muscles of steel overnight, she did all that on her own, with Godric at her side.

Speaking of Godric, that man is the epitome of perfection, I know I say that about every MMC I like but Death Jr (as dubbed by Wen herself) is something else. The sexual tension and slow burn between him and Wen was literally maddening. I haven't read a better enemies to lovers in a long time. Godric, insufferable and godawful (another of Wen's 'endearments') as he is, their interactions have never been of outright hatred. Olivia Pharos did an excellent job of building on mutual resentment that gave way to other emotions. To me, that's what makes or breaks enemies to lovers, there's a fine line to toe. You can't make the MCs be evil to eachother and then just bring them together with a badly written excuse as to why they acted that way, it doesn't work like that. Pharos, like I said, aced it.

I also really loved the Unitas, Jinny, Aela and even Cara. The one person I couldn't stand was Sarah. (SPOILER AHEAD) During the trials, she just laid in the ground and sobbed and shook because she had a phobia?? Big deal dude, your friends were dying and would've done just that to protect you. It makes me furious at her that Wen and Jinny would worship the ground she walks on if they could. I tell you, I don't like this girl one bit.

Lorcan is cute I guess but I bet there's going to be a dark twist in his story and Gideon and Tory are okay too and they'll probably have more screentime in the next book.

Pharos is a genius with her debut book. Celestial Academy is going to take you on a vivacious, wild ride of heaven and hell, apocalypse and another impending apocalypse (?). I cannot wait to read the next book in the series, Nexus which I hear is going to be available for pre-order soon.

I'm also so happy that Net Galley provided me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

5 "Come back to me -- Always" stars!!

Celestial Academy is an absolute gem of a find, I don't think I can find the words that accurately describe how I'm feeling about it right now apart from maybe Phenomenal!!!!..... but even then it doesn't quite feel enough and its this authors DEBUT!!!!😱 .......absolutely blown away!!

Not long into the book I knew i was going to love Wen her whit is fantastic and exactly what I needed , her banter with Godric and Lorcan had me laughing out loud so much it was an absolute pleasure to read. Celestial Academy is a story of many layers ,just when you think you've got something figured out a "black hole" is thrown in the works and what you thought you knew goes straight out the window ,I love a story that can keep you on your toes with unpredictability and let me tell you this book has that and more!!

With twists and turns galore, a slow burn romance, lots of LOL moments and parts I thought I'd be needing to scream how cruel the author was 🤣 all together with an amazing set of characters to fall in love with, this will no doubt become your next obsession and I'm here for it alllllll...

"I am the maddening pebble in his shoe. The scraping splinter in his eye. And everything else that will turn his life into a wonderland of aggravation. Silver linings do exist."

Pharos has a fantastically unique way of writing that sets the scene brilliantly giving the reader everything they need to be able to visualise right down to the smallest detail, which in turn leads to a very very exciting and enjoyable read, and I really didn't want it to end.

This debut author has given us a beautifully written story that has all the promise of the start of something very special , I'm so excited for more, I cant wait to see what's going to happen next for everyone and everything in the Afterworld.

"I should have known that in my world, worse always comes. And if what I remember comes true, it just got infinitely more complicated"

And after THAT ending I'm going to be needing Nexus very soon!!!

OK. What was this I just read? For two days and nights straight? What magic is this? WHO is this Olivia Pharos and where did she come from? She just can't be a debut author, as she claims. This is the work of a seasoned and major writer!

I won't go into details cause all other reviewers went into those, plus you really need to read the book, to plunge into the world she created to understand, to experience the magic! But I will say this, this is no doubt the start of a huge series and universe. And now THIS is slow-burn done right. I can see how the relationship between Wen and Godric will explode into a wildfire—later. But this first installment is ALL about piling up the tinder.

For those who wanted more from other characters, or the plot, of course, you want more. And there will be four more books, according to the author. As for those found it slow or long, I can't see how. Every word was needed, was absolutely right, ever page flew by, and as I neared the end, I kept hoping there would be more, that I can reach for the next book in the series at once and continue reading. Now I'm in serious withdrawal.

WHEN WILL THE NEXT BOOK BE OUT????

Thank you netgalley and Olivia Pharos for the audio book arc in exchange for an honest review.

Well this was an almighty surprise!
So as I started listening to this I got major zodiac academy vibes.
This was all action, all banter and all consuming slow burn from the start.

Wen is a demons slave and her bestie sarah is also a slave together it’s a struggle to just get through every day without drawing attention to themselves.
Wen has started saving her money from selling angel essence on the side to get them out of the slavery. Until she is tracked down and arrested by Godric an archangel son.

Wen is then thrown in the celestial academy by the archangels to discover what and who she is.
Godric is forced to become her mentor and train her for the trails.

This is an extremelyyyyyyy slow burn enemies to not lovers (yet)
Not quite yet but possibly found family
Major action packed
Hogwarts meets zodiac academy with their bestie fourth wing.
It’s definitely worth a read/listen for sure.
The narrator is top she’s so good and I’ve listened to some of her narrations before and she is great.

My only gripe on this is there is a whole lot of info and action so at some points it was over whelming and I had to go back and re listen.

But 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Unfortunately, Celestial Academy: Essence just wasn't for me. Reading the book felt like an uphill battle, for the most part, it was unnecessarily wordy and repetitive without furthering the plot until around 60%. I found the main character, Wen, to be irritating with her constant questions and inner musings, and her relationship with her best friend, Sarah, was unhealthy in its co-dependency. The book did pick up towards the end and the last 20% managed to keep my attention. Characters that I did enjoy, were Jinny, Lorcan, and of course, Godric who I wish I'd read more from their PoV.

What a fantasy world she created. It was all there, good and evil, love and hate, life and death. She painted quite a picture. It took me awhile to accept the premise of heaven and hell on earth, as I don't really believe in that sort of thing, but then I remembered this was fantasy so anything goes. Once I got interested in the characters, then I just wanted to see what Wen's ability was and how she would use her new powers. It really was a love hate story of discovery from the beginning!! I can't wait to see Wen's powers and that of her "roomies" powers also developing!! And of course what is "Godawful" up to??

Amazing read! Can't believe it's a debut, and I can't wait for more. I hope this will be one of those huge, ongoing series with lots of spin-offs!

I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

"Amazing. Not even battling a horde of monstrosities, a black hole, and a void slowed down your avalanche of questions."

Celestial Academy: Essence is the first book within the Afterworld series. In this, you will meet Wen, Sarah, and Godric. Wen is a drug dealing demon owned human. She wasn't always on this path, but what can you do when you are four years old. After a deal went sideways, she ends up going to the Celestial Academy. Which, I'm sure is just going to be a piece of cake for her, right?

Wrong. She has all kinds of trust issues and will probably butt heads with mostly everyone there. She's all kinds of stubborn and won't take anyone's shit. So, I'll admit it was very interesting when she runs into Sarah and sort of builds a friendship with her. Sarah is also a demon owned human and is sentenced right along with Wen. They are definitely opposites, but I really enjoyed their friendship and growth throughout the book.

Then there's Godric. My god, I loved him and honestly after how this book ended, I'm not sure what to think. He's an angel and definitely goes by the name Angelhole. Or maybe he just tolerates that nickname? The way he banters with Wen is just amazing. I also liked the slow buildup of their romance. Even though I felt like I was dying at time because of how slow it was going.

In the end, I really liked the audiobook of this. It was easy to listen to and just work on... well, work. I'll have to see if I can get the next book as an audiobook.

Celestial Academy: Essence
Author: Olivia Pharos
Afterworld #1

Okay, this was also another interesting read! Thank you so much Netgalley and IBPA for this ALC! This was a super fun read which would be good for fans of Zodiac Academy. Our FMC is a demon owned, drug dealing human living in the Afterworld. She ends up getting arrested for selling a very high profile drug called “Angelescence”. Her punishment for this, is being carted off to Celestial Academy. Godric is a hot assasin that has been assigned to watch over her. They end up absolutely hating each other, but also being drawn to each other. Unfortunately there are explosive consequences if they end up taking the next step. This book was super fun, my only issues were that I found myself getting a little slumpy at some parts of it. Overall, it did keep me intrigued enough to finish and I would definitely listen to book 2 if they release it on audio! It was refreshing to read a light, spicy, brain candy type fantasy right now.
