The second installment to Night of The Living Cat is just as good as the first! While there was a moment in the first book reminded me of The Mist, there’s moments in this book that remind me of World War Z. While zombies are an overwhelming force in World War Z, cats are no different here. Volume 2 also did a great job wrapping up the prologue and I’m so excited to see where our characters go now!

In the second installment to this very cute horror comedy, we see a surprisingly terrifying super power that cats have and it isn’t making our protagonist sneeze to alert them of proximity. I am really liking this story and with how wacky it is you think it would get tired but the mangaka has found a way to keep it engaging and interesting. Part of me is sad I’ll be reading the final book in the trilogy soon.

Volume 2 is a great prologue book that ends with the events that occurred in chapter 1 of volume 1.
Again, great pacing in the story and phenomenal art work that Mecha-Roots renders perfectly with Hawkman’s fast paced and comedic story.

I'm starting to get into the plot here. Also, the number of cat puns keeps growing.

Night of the Living Cat Review

4/5 stars

This will be a spoiler free review. Onto the review!

I picked up this relatively new manga series because I saw someone reading them at the library, and I was curious what they were about. The general story is this: There is a virus going around that turns people into cats. If you come into contact with a cat, you will be infected and become a cat yourself. The main characters are all workers from a cat cafe, and they’re trying to escape all the cats who keep being super cute and trying to interact with them. That’s basically the entire plot.

I can’t tell if this is meant to be a serious dystopian series or not. The threat doesn’t feel all that real most of the time, because the cats are so darn cute. Plus, there are references to all sorts of sci-fi and dystopian movies, tv shows, and books, which are hilarious if you get the joke. I only understood some of it, but it didn’t really matter. It was funny either way. Because of all the jokes and the super cute cats this almost feels like it’s supposed to be a parody.

I really liked all the cute cats and the funny moments, but I wish I had a bit more connection to the characters. We haven’t gotten much about their backstories yet. But that could be coming in later volumes. We mostly get these over the top action scenes where they’re using cat toys and catnip to avoid being touched by the infected cats. If you’re looking for a fun series where it doesn’t take itself too seriously, I definitely recommend this series.

Or if you just really like cats. This is definitely a series for cat lovers. I may be a fox fan usually, but cats are also cute. They’re the practical version of foxes. Cute as heck and actually possible to have as pets.

Have a nice day/night everyone!

More CATastrophes to cuddle with

With cats carrying a disease that will convert humans into new cats our main team of survivors narrowly escape their formally safe haven to find help and possibly security. With one of the cat loving survivors allergic to cats the sudden increase is terrible but thanks to her hyper sensitivity the group has a slightly better chance to avoid the fate of so many before them but in reality regardless of long they run how far can people run from the adorable doom coming their way.

This manga series continues to be a splendid spoof of Night of the Walking Dead with often times over dramatic characters who find themselves occasionally almost succumbing to the horde of feline overlords. Of course even with a to be continued at the end of the chapter I wonder how long this series will last. For now I will worry about that and enjoy the anarchy. :)

I loved this volume so much and once I started it thinking I would read a chapter in between breaks of my novel book, I couldn’t put it down! It was so hilarious with no one wanting to hurt these cats and loving being in their presence as well as feeling sheer panic at the same time. I enjoyed this one more than the first one and I already can’t wait to read the third volume. It gives the walking dead vibes as expected but absolutely adorable like the prime minister struggling to try and come up with methods to save humanity but yet there can be no harm done to the cats (of course!)

Honestly kind of boring. Once you get pass the novelty of a Cat apocalypse there's really no substance to the story.

THEY DID THE THING

Night of the Living Cat characters in the 'Reaction Guys' meme pose

Had to come back and re-read this as a result! Good thing I did, since I guess I missed reviewing this one first time around... oops!

The anime is so far a little less good than I had expected, mostly because the cats are computer-generated (understandably, since there ARE *hundreds* of them) and their animation is a bit stiff, but I'm not REALLY complaining since it's a pretty decent treatment otherwise. I mean, it's VERY DARK (literally—night scenes), but I'm hoping that improves when they get to more day sequences.

This volume is almost entirely covered by Episode 4, where book 1 took three episodes—I have to assume because this volume is a lot of action, which tends to go more quickly than when there's a lot of slower paced talking and exposition. It also has several shorts: one about how Tanishi started going to the cat café in the first place (this became a post-credits bonus in one of the earlier episodes) and several "four-panel" comics about quick jokes.

What's interesting is the back cover describes the "nyandemic" cats as a "disease vector"—it seems odd to call transformation into a cat a "disease" rather than... well... I don't know what. Let's see:
disease, any harmful deviation from the normal structural or functional state of an organism, generally associated with certain signs and symptoms and differing in nature from physical injury.
Okay, then, I guess it's a disease, in the sense of it being harmful to be a cat instead of a human. Although I don't know that any of the ex-humans really feel harmed by it. The still-humans feel more harmed than the now-cats do, by virtue of having to do without petting cats!

Hilarious read, though newcomers should honestly start with the first book.

Comedic horror describes this series well. More emphasis on the comedy rather than the horror though. Imagine a world where instead of a zombie virus spreading through the world people are being turned into cats whenever their skin comes in contact with one! The real horror for the cat loving people within the story is not being able to touch and cuddle those adorable felines! You can tell both the author, Hawkman, and the illustrator, Mecha-Roots are both really familiar with cats and I assume love them as well. I had to laugh as I recognize my own feline loving behaviors exhibited in this book. So if you're looking for something a bit ridiculous filled with cute cats with a touch of horror this is a good escapist series.

Volume 2 follows the adventures of Kunagai and his fellow humans as they attempt to find their way to the rescue zones. However, things don't happen as they like because as is all to common some days the rescuers don't have a true grasp of feline behavior. Will any of them be able to make it to the pick up zone or will all succumb to the feline transformation virus?

The cats are drifting from one densely populated area to the next and increasing their numbers. A number of cities have already been overrun. We've lost all communication with them. According to our calculations, if transmission of the virus continues to spread, this location will be swallowed up by cats in a matter of hours. There have been numerous sightings of adorable kitties making their way toward this location.

It's rare to find a story which is a ridiculous as it is sublime. Nothing about this series should work beyond the initial premise yet they manage to create a narrative which is compelling and laugh out loud funny.

A new virus is spreading across the world. Rather than the usual zombie approach, this virus turns the infected into cats! Cue exposed bellies desperate to be rubbed, kitten eyes, and other nefarious tactics to lure unexpecting humans to their doom!

Our cast of cat cafe workers are struggling to both survive and to avoid taking endless pictures of cute cats as the world around them becomes more perilous. Armed forced refuse to engage the enemy as countless cities fall to the hoards of fearsome felines.

How can humanity possibly survive?! 5 stars.

More of the same, which in this case is good. The story wraps around to the action sequence that started the first volume (though there are a few minor inconsistencies, like at that time they talked about trying to get to Tanishi's car, except hid car had been wrecked earlier in the timeline, though later in the story; and here Tanishi says he wants a replacement for his bike).

I like how there is so much effort to show cats not being harmed, like in the epic helicopter crash. However, I do really wonder where it goes from here. I suppose there is plenty of post-apocalyptic work (zombie and otherwise) that can be parodied. But the final scene of this story shows a cat riding a bear down a deserted city street, and there are few things that would better qualify as "jumping the shark", aside from literal shark jumping.

Last volume I expressed the fear that for such an entertaining premise, how long could they keep doing this one-note joke.
More & more & MORE situations keep presenting themselves where adorable housecats keep finding unsuspecting humans, and each time it's hilarious...so I had nothing to worry about!
Speaking of housecats, apparently the artist was taking requests since several cats in crowds were shouted out as being "chappy-san from the so&so household." Love that kinda minor audience participation.

The first day is over and the world has been overrun by cats.

You get a glimpse at the response from humans on how they’re handling the situation. Everyone rather protect the cats instead of hurt them. That’s a rather wholesome take on humanity. I love it.

This volume concludes the events that led up to the opening scene in the first volume. You know how they got there and who the characters are. And even introduced to a new evolution of humans turned cats along with how they differ.

I love this series, the art style, and story. I can’t wait to continue! 🐾

This was another great volume. The silliness and the ridiculousness of it all is fantastic. The art (and jump scares) are all horror. But then you realize the hordes are comprised of cats, and you can't help but go "aww" and its all just so silly. Like, I'm allergic to cats, but I can totally see where the characters are coming from. I've already requested the next volume.

Tsutsumi's cat allergies allow her to guide the team around the cats to a rescue helicopter - but it can only take one person.

This is absolute silliness and a ton of fun. I like how the creator plays with titles to the books: this one contains 'The Cat is a Harsh Mistress" and "Nocturne of Myars".

This just keeps getting better and better (by which I mean more and more ridiculous). The art style is great, the characters are mostly deadpan, and the storyline is fun

If I could just pick on manga series to ever read again it would be this one. The art is great, the action us good, and it is just wonderfully absurd.
