Pocket Dungeon #1

Pocket Dungeon

Rate this book
Wes Rhodes wasn’t prepared to wake up in a medieval-style equipment room.

He wasn’t expecting to fight his way through a deadly dungeon today, either.

But when he makes it through before the timer runs out, his entire perspective shifts.

Now, he’s the guy with a whole other dimension waiting inside the magic crystal in his pocket, and nothing will ever be the same. All he’s gotta do is make it out alive and get back to Earth each and every time.

And the payoff is worth it.

There’s monsters to slay, loot to gain, and even some sexy women to save from certain doom. But the whole “rich beyond his wildest dreams” thing would be way more awesome if people weren’t suddenly trying to stalk and murder him for his magic crystal…

This was a fun first in a new series by Vall! The concept of the story and characters are really interesting and exciting. It's definitely a series I will keep reading. This title puts me in the mood to watch movies like Krull, Beastmaster, and Conan.

No idea why I keep reading Vall. The ero is as spicy as mayo with pepper.

Actions speak louder than words, and the author asks hundreds of rhetorical questions, that have no answer, no point, add to this explanations that are unnecessary and all this filler if taken out would reduce about 20% of the size of this Book 1 of Pocket Dungeon. The fact that the paragraph is at 1.5 lines, takes about 30% more of the pages, so, the story is about 350+ pages or so, without any maps, without any inside illustrations or character summaries.
The cover illustration worries me somewhat, I feel that the girl is a little young, and the main character Wes, had a girlfriend, days before he bought the crystal that allowed him to explore the dungeons. That girlfriend, Wes dropped the moment he rescued a beast-folk fox-girl, Yasha...
Wes is a wimp, not good at any type of martial arts, and has a job selling used books. Doesn't know how to manage money, doesn't really know how to strategize in dungeons. His only strength is that he rescued Yasha and she is a great Melee fighter. When Yasha was injured Wes teamed up with another strong player that helped him defeat the Sphinx last Boss...
The action is kind of slow. Too many Harrison Ford references of Star Wars and Indiana Jones...Like if movies were "training" instead of taking real martial arts classes and real strategy and management classes...
There are a lot of plot holes in this first book and in the fantasy series in general...Wes is getting himself a harem-retinue but it is apparent that the "tastes and ethical values" are missing from the main character (and the author)... Yasha is a small Loli, then Iris was in her teens in 1977, when she was "imprisoned" in the last dungeon delved in Book 1, so, Wes could have a second sister in Yasha and a Grandmother in Iris...and just thinking about the possibility of sex scenes, makes me cringe... Wes lacks determination and is a push-over most of the time. Hasn't really done anything in his life until the day he entered this new type of "personal dungeon"...
The author left more things unexplained, than those things he did question and over explain...We still do not know the origin and point to these "pocket dungeons", why they don't have a dungeon store, where the adventurers/delvers can spend their gold...etc. We don't know how big the dungeons are, how long they last or any major details about dungeonology and this is a Dungeon fantasy novel series...The Dungeons explained and written by the author are atypical (with lots of riddles, instead of mobs) and really short (with a two hour timer)... So, why does the main character talk so much, and meet so many other delvers in so little time?? I don't think that the author has thought the story out well yet...
Apparently Book 2 has already been published or already has a publishing date of January 13th., 2023...not sure if I'll be reading the second one though...

I listened to this first part of a new series by megaproductive Eric Vall, and came away a bit disappointed. It's an easy listen, and entertaining enough (largely filled with blow by blow traversals of dungeons as per tabletop D&D). The dungeons are original enough although there was no larger backstory (yet), instead it felt like the dungeons were filled with random encounters. It's more that however fantastic this Isekei (and haremlit?) fantasy is, the protagonist remains very down to earth, focused on his mundane life, apparently without much fantasy himself (ha!). Also I felt that for all the times his female co-heroine was lauded for her combat skills she was painted as too much of a dumb sidekick stroking the male hero ego. No Bruce Sentar this Vall is. Pity.

Pop culture references. Why do you keep padding shit novels with pop culture references?
Why would iron brackets remind someone of GoT?
How stupid would someone have to be to understand what a longsword was from having watched The Witcher of all things? Why even make it a full-sized paragraph?

The novel is chock-full of idiotic pop culture references, American society references and whatever else Vall could come up with to pad the word count a bit. It's thin and similar to all the other books in the genre with nothing to stand out. Cheap copy-paste pretty much.

Fun, entertaining and definitely a thrill to read!

I'm loving these new genre of books where a character is transported to another world /Dungeon but is still able to return home.

But a pocket Dungeon through a crystal is definitely a unique and entertaining concept that is going to be fun and enjoyable to read.

With the unique, fun and quirky characters, interesting pasts and consequences of the Pocket Dungeon, the thrills are just beginning
Look forward to more!

Fun read for dungeon crawler fans.

Fun read for dungeon crawler fans. Attention to the sweaty, sore and often bloody detail of a focused crawler grind is a plus.

Rather interesting.

Book is a lot more readable if you skip the sex scenes. Not sure what the story is with the mimic.

good start

I know the rules and since there isn’t a second one waiting I am assuming people couldn’t push past a slower than normal beginning? Good story and I hope to see more
