Repairing Our Divided Nation: How to Fix America's Broken Government, Racial Inequity, and Troubled Schools

Rate this book
David Ellison wrote Repairing Our Divided Nation because he, like so many others, is frustrated with the division he sees in our nation, particularly when it comes to race and politics. In his desire to help create a better world for all – no matter one’s color or political persuasion – Ellison studied the works of some of the world’s most respected scholars and summaries of notable Supreme Court cases that continue to negatively impact society today. With malice toward none, Repairing Our Divided Nation • History lessons that should be required reading for all Americans. • A demand that Congress stop abdicating its responsibilities. • A plan for running our elections so the best people are sent to Washington to serve We the People . • A proposal for improving our schools’ curricula and administration. • A call for guaranteeing that all Americans, no matter their color, wealth, or zip code, have a real chance at becoming economically self-reliant and living a life with dignity. This book concludes with four of the most important documents in America’s the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Amendments to the Constitution, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” Ellison believes that if every American did a deep dive into understanding each document’s message, we would have the more perfect Union our Founders envisioned.

I am a political junkie to say the least, so finding a book like this one on Goodreads was right up my alley. David Ellison gives his vision on how to solve America's broken political system. Most of his idea's are sound and common sense to the average American; however, Washington's political class has little common sense. Most are money grubbing political hacks, that care little about the common American citizen and a whole lot about their bank accounts and re-election campaigns so they could retain power and keep the cycle going.
If the politicians followed his ideas and suggestions, America would be on a much stronger platform here at home and on the world stage. His ideas on voting alone could radically change the country.
American's must wake up and see what is happening right in front of them. The politicians no longer even try to hide their contempt for the founders and the founding documents. Ellison demands the return of teaching these documents in schools to educate the population of what this country once was and could be if they truly understood them to the fullest. The founding documents are not hard to understand as the founders wanted the general population to understand them and use them to keep their representatives honest. Somewhere around the civil war the population stopped paying attention and the politicians started to take over. Now the country looks little like what the founders envisioned. We are still a young country at 246 years. At the current rate that we are dissolving, we may not make 275 unless some of Ellison's ideas or others like or similar to them are enacted by the Congress.
Anyone who cares deeply about America should read this book. IT WILL MAKE YOU THINK and hopefully wake up. It is a relatively short read and it comes with a copy of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence for the reader to read and look up the information he points out. Please give this a read. It will only take a few hours of your time. You'll be thinking about it for weeks and hopefully for months later.

Disclaimer...won this book on Goodreads Giveaway:

That said...Mr. Ellison does an excellent job in summarizing why our government is broken, and the solutions that he offers would work. However, the seems to think that somehow electing 'more centrist' Democrats or Republicans would solve our woes, but we (and he) should have learned by now that leaders of neither party are interested in solving problems, since doing so runs contrary to the divisive political environment that helps them keep their jobs. Mr. Ellison would do well to have researched the political platform of the Libertarian Party, as that platform advocates all the solutions offered by Mr. Ellison, and recommended to his readers to abandon the existing two-party duopoly.
