Always read the fine print. Especially when you’re making a deal with the devil. Because demons are sneaky bastards. That’s how they got me. Well, and the rest of my hometown. A few hours of what I asked for and then we were all dragged to Hell. Luckily, those jokes about lawyers and Hell are pretty accurate. After a lengthy court case downstairs, I’ve been released on Hell’s very first work-release program with a time limit and a quota. All I have to do is hunt down and kill the things that go bump in the night like; Rawheads, poltergeists, bunyips, dab tsogs, and harvest gods. If I kill enough to meet my quota, the souls of the other townsfolk are set free. If I don’t, we all stay downstairs...permanently.

So, no pressure or anything. On top of that suck salad, a tribe of cannibals want to put me on the menu, a pair of murderous Pucas are taking people joy-riding, and a teenage hitchhiker with a hot-handed problem is riding shotgun. So, when I heard about a big daddy demon that was hellbent on taking me back downstairs ahead of schedule, I knew it was time for another challenge: figure out how to ice a demon. If I succeed, all the souls in my deal, including mine, go free. If I fail...well, at least I’ll go down swinging.

But, I’ve got Peeps, whiskey, and a sawed-off. What more does a gal need to do the job?

Midnight Rider is your ticket to ride shotgun in a dark urban fantasy monster hunt spanning thirteen heart-stopping, hilarious books. If you like Supernatural, Buffy, or The Dresden Files this series will be right at home on your shelf. Join the hunt!

Midnight Rider
By D.V. Wolfe
I was hooked on this book within a couple of sentences. I am so surprised this series isn't more popular. This has everything I love in a fantasy book. She is a tough female, although she has flaws. A cast of crazy characters that are so different from each other, but each are very intriguing. Lots of action, touch of humor scattered around, unpredictable situations, supernatural elements, and suspense, thrills, and different kinds of unusual creatures. Going straight to next book!

This felt like a love letter to my guilty pleasure, Supernatural, but there are so many characters introduced so quickly and the story moves at warp speed which made it difficult to keep track of what was going on.

At its core, I want to love it so I will check out book 2.

I loved it! I was tempted by online ads to get this book and I am so glad! It was fantastic. The whole gang is crazy and funny, old and young, and loyal no matter what. I have many more books to look forward to.

First of a series, this novel shows what can happen when a person really does make a deal with the devil.

A woman named Bane made such a deal, and everyone in her hometown is paying the price. The devil decides to give Bane a second chance. She has a time limit to kill a certain number of poltergeists, harvest gods and other such creatures that go bump in the night. If she is successful, everyone in her hometown, including Bane, will be released by the devil. She does not want to think of what will happen if she fails.

As if that wasn't enough, a tribe of cannibals is looking at her as lunch, and she acquires a teenage hitchhiker with strange abilities of his own. Does Bane rescue the people of her hometown? Does Bane stay out of Hell?

This is an excellent (bordering on amazing) start to a series. From the first few lines, the reader is right in the middle of the action. It's got plenty of weird stuff, lots of good writing and bits of humor included. I am very interested in reading the rest of the series.

I wasn’t sure what to expect going in, but Midnight Rider completely won me over. The premise is wild in the best way and the execution is even better. A soul-saving work-release from Hell with a sarcastic, no-nonsense heroine? Sign me up.

The voice of the main character is sharp, funny, and totally engaging. She feels real, rough around the edges in a relatable way, and somehow still endearing despite all the chaos she’s caught up in. The pacing is fast, the world is gritty and strange (but never confusing), and the monsters are just the right mix of creepy and cool.

What really impressed me was how the book balances action, dark humor, and genuine stakes. There’s a lot of absurdity, but it never loses the emotional core of the story saving her town, and maybe even herself.

If you're into urban fantasy with bite, clever banter, and nonstop monster-hunting mayhem, this is definitely worth picking up. I’ll be diving into the next book soon.

Hop in for a road trip (away) from hell

Climb into the bed of Lucy, the dirty 1949 pick-up and hang on! The synopsis cites Supernatural, Buffy, Sabrina, and Dresden Files and the similarities are there, but Wolfe's voice is unique. She writes action scenes that are taut and their aftermaths with wit and a delightfully slightly skewed made-me-laugh perspective. After reading way too many amateurish attempts at slapstick and oo-aren't-we-wacky-and-just-too-cute scenes from other "authors," Wolfe's style is refreshing. Her characters are well-drawn and the exposition is organic, part of the story-telling. The stakes are high, the need for redemption is heart-breaking, and there's no guarantee what Bane will find at the end of the road, but maybe she and her team give us all a little hope that we can keep fighting.

Really, really like this book but...

I won't take a star off, but there are annoyances. Maybe it's just me?

First, I don't care for more than one character speaking in a paragraph. It's confusing. So what if a paragraph or three are only one line long? This is also something I've not seen in other books so I don't think my kindle occasionally didn't format correctly.

Second, I don't understand why authors feel a need to compare their works to other authors. 'If you like (insert author names) you'll love this book! Do you love (insert tv show or movie) you're gonna lose your mind reading this author!' I've been burned too many times to count by authors that don't measure up to my favorites.

Until now lol. I already have books #2-8.

Bane is running wild, fast and furious from the demons in her life, literal as well as the figurative and there are plenty of them.

With Noah a ride along hitchhiker kid running for his life that she rescues, her friend Rosetta, and a truly ragtag group of friends that are all that stand between us and the end of the world, they battle some scary scarrrrrry demons and cannibals and other dark paranormals, who want to destroy everything and everyone she loves.

Bane won’t go down without a fight - crazzzzzy action and a wild read.
This is a Fast moving, action filled novel, a dark utopian storyline with snarky, sarcastic heroine humor and a totally worthwhile read

Action-packed, Irreverent, and Funny as Hell

This isn’t your average Urban Fantasy, that’s for sure. Midnight Rider follows Bane, a snarky heroine on hell’s work-release program. If she fulfills her end of the arrangement—kill some monsters, save some souls—and she earns a get-out-of-hell-free card. But a sinister demon tries to thwart Bane’s efforts.

I really enjoyed authentic voices of the characters and the blend of humor and carnage.

I’ll be following Bane and Noah on their subsequent adventures.

One hell of a ride!

This is easily one of the most clever, amusing books I’ve read in a long time. I was literally laughing out loud while reading this. All the characters are relatable, (Even the bad ones) and I love the main protagonist. The only critique I can offer is that the pacing could’ve been faster. I found myself needing a break, but the sarcasm and dark humor kept me coming back. The ending was satisfactory, and it definitely left me wanting more of this series. I will surely devour the rest of these books!

Midnight Rider

I saw this book on one of those Facebook ads & I was a bit leery, but I figured to hell with it, I need something new to read.

The story was never what I expected at any point & was pretty damned good. A tiny bit of Supernatural mixed with a lot of the author's own brand of uniqueness, it makes for a spicy meat-a-ball! Go ahead & give it a try, if for some reason you don't find it entertaining, then I am sure Texas Roadhouse will give you your money back! 😂🤣

I've been exploring the first books in various urban fantasy series over the past few weeks. While some were enjoyable, none captivated me quite like this one!

From the very first few pages, I was hooked. The story drew me in immediately, and I found myself deeply invested in the fate of Bane and the intriguing cast of characters surrounding her. The plot was both interesting and engaging, compelling me to dive straight into book #2.

Buckle Up!

MidnightRider1

Dark Urban, huh?

Bane knows one existence - driving down the road, in Lucy, hunting demons and denizens of nightmares. It’s the only way to save the life of the people of her town, Ashley, Kansas.

The soul exchanges rate is skewed in Hell’s favor (of course), and the clock is ticking down, on her work-release program. But, Bane is determined to save them all … or die trying.

Really fun characters and story

Non stop action and adventure, great characters, fun dialogue, and a smattering of crazy antics too. The main character and sidekick really worked in this story. The other supporting characters also helped fill it out. I am glad the ending worked out like it did as it sets up future books fairly well. I enjoyed this book and recommend it.

Need the next one

It started with one, then over time others were sucked into the cause. An easy read with some interesting twists. Once you eyes are open and you know what goes bump in the night, you just have to buckle in and take care of business. Looking forward to the next book.

Good read

Bane hunts the bad things to try and save all the people from the town she grew up in.

I like the premise, the characters and the action. This book starts off running and pretty much keeps that pace all the way through. Can't wait to read the next one in the series.

Good book!!

Pretty good book, interesting story line. The only part I don't like is trying to keep straight whom said what. There isn't a good distinction between characters and what they are saying. Other than that I enjoyed the story and thr characters a great deal.

Dark fantasy, great Halloween read!

While I enjoyed the story and the characters I didn’t like the tremendous amount of cursing. The author’s imagination is quite good and I’m sure less vulgar language is within their scope.

About 15% in I got sick of the banter. I wanted to like this, but rather than explain anything that's going on, the MC deflects with a quip. It's like reading a Martin Lawrence comedy where the script had to be extended so the movie would run 4 hours.

this is fun!

This is a very fun read. The author had great humor and self deprecation. She has really interesting characters. I have some philosophical issues with the world she has developed, but it is still a fun read.
